[Q] Tether Application Without Internet Connection - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have minecraft pe on my tablet. Usually, I need to play multi player with other people in places without wifi. On honeycomb, I solved this using the tethering setting. However, on ics this setting does not work. I have downloaded lots of wifi tethering applications ( like FoxFi) but they all required an active internet connection. My question if there is a tethering app that does not require an active internet question in order to be used.
(Btw, I'm on AOKP milestone 5)

Bluetooth or WIFI direct works pretty well to setup a LAN connection. Or search for a LAN app in the market.

[Q] Connect Xoom to Xoom

How do I connect two Xoom WiFi together without needing a WiFi connection? I am thinking about file transfers between them and video phone. I understand the range limitations if it were Bluetooth.
I would also like to connect over a WiFi connection as well.
Thanx, Galen
Easiest way is with bluetooth and a bluetooth file transfer app available in the market (there are many). I use "BlueTooth File Transfer".
Wifi...not sure if you can setup the internal storage as a network share, launch a wifi tether app, then connect to the share from the other one - that would seem like a lot of effort.
ya I'd agree, bluetooth is the way to go. If you went wifi it would have to be some kind of adhoc type setup and I think i read somewhere that the XOOM cant/wont do adhoc

I don't understand...you are basically using your Blackberry/laptop configuration to make a mobile hotspot, right? If the Xoom can access the wifi signal for one app it should be able to for any app. Maybe I'm missing something. Can you give more explanation?

I connected my blackberry bold which has 3g to my laptop which broadcasts the connection via wifi. The chrome browser and android market and other goodies apps connect but installed apps don't connect. Plus I recently bought a huawei e5 mobile 3g wireless router. I got my xoom connected to the network but right now only the browser goes online,. The other apps just do not. I don't know what other piece of detail I can give other than the fact that my Xoom wifi is not connecting to 3g networks broadcast via wifi. Any ideas?
This is really very strange... I switched my 3G-Xoom into flight mode and then activated WiFi (so it basically behaves like a WiFi-only Version) and connected it to my mobile (Samsung Galaxy S) and all apps are able to access the internet. Connecting ist to a UMTS-Router (Option GlobeSurf) also worked like a charm...
Did you try to connect your Xoom to a WiFi-Router at home (= Internet access via cable not UMTS)? Does this work or do you encounter the same probs?

[Q] Internet Pass-Through for non Sense ROMs?

Any developers out there know if it it possible to port the Internet Pass-Through feature [aka Reverse Tethering] of Sense ROMs to AOSP ROMs?
There is a thread here which talks about in length but it is not a simple or trouble-free process.
If HTC can do it, surely it can't be that hard! I would love to be able to move to an AOSP ROM on my One S but cannot go without the Pass-through feature.
I'm curious about how you got pass through to work? Hasn't worked for me yet because the drivers never install when I plug my phone in. And, if it did actually work, does your phone use it like WiFi so WiFi calling works? That'd be what I need it for most.

We don't have Wifi calling on the EU phone, but then we are rarely out of range of a cell.
To get Pass-through to work, it is just a matter of connecting the phone via usb to a computer and selecting Internet pass-through from the pop-up dialogue box
BUT:
There are issues with certain firewalls. When I got the phone I was using Bullguard Internet Security on my laptop and I could not get internet pass-through to work via the firewall (it worked fine if I disabled Bullguard). I spent about 3 hours online with a Bullguard technician who was unable to solve the problem.
I have since removed Bullguard and installed Microsoft Internet Security Essentials. There are no firewall problems with MISE.
You must have the latest version of HTC sync installed for Pass-through to work.
Internet Pass-through allows the phone to connect to the internet via your PC's internet connection. I use it a lot because I spend a lot of time in hotels all around Europe. When I am out of the UK I do not use roaming data (too expensive) but I always have internet in my hotel room. This is either a wired connection, or (more often) it is a WiFi connection for a single device only. I use the hotel connection for my laptop and the pass-through connection for my phone.
I am not sure if this setup would give you WiFi calling as I am not really sure how that works (does the phone differentiate between a WiFi connection and a wired connection)? It would allow you to use Skype or another VOIP service to make calls.

I agree that it would be cool if devs could port this to other roms.
Just on the off chance someone might get some use from it, here's what I do. If you're travelling with a laptop and your hotel has Ethernet, it's really easy to set your laptop to broadcast an adhoc network to share with your phone.
I know it doesn't help with hotels that only have WiFi for one device, but with places that have Ethernet and WiFi, I find that tethering to my own laptop gets me a much better connection, and it means I don't have to lug around my router.
Sorry for the OT, back to the discussion

Android to Hotspot using BT Wifi

Hi all,
I'm looking for a way of turning my droid device into a portable Hotspot but using my existing BT Connection.
Essentially, I connect to BT OpenZone to access the internet. I have other devices I want to connect to the internet but they don't have browser options to login to BT Openzone.
So is there anyway I can use my droid as a hotspot without using mobile data.
Many thanks.

You could try:
- installing BTWifi app to auto-login to BTWifi hotspots
- setting up Android wifi hotspot on your android device
- turning off mobile data on your 2G/3G/4G connection
- setting up your other devices to connect to the Android wifi hotspot on your device
- keep your device plugged in to the mains for as long as possible
If you are rooted and running a custom rom like CM11, firewalls like AFWall+ give you even more options

Screensharing / AirDroid similar apps

Hi!
I'm wondering if there are any apps like AirDroid out there where I don't have to connect to the same wifi network to screencast my android device. It's in another room on a dock, charging and giving me all the wifi tethering I could want.
Since it does wifi tether, I cannot connect to the same local network from the device... so I have to do remote access.
Anyone out there?
