[Q] CM9 - Any way to boost speaker volume? - HTC Sensation

Simply put - I love CM9 , but the volume coming out the speaker for notifications, alarms and rings is simply not loud enough.
I know in the past (Back in the CM7 days) there were some 3rd party apps available on the market that would boost the audio output - does anyone know if there is a way to boost it in CM9 in it's present nightly form?
Thanks in advance!

Get Volume+ (Volume boost) app.

So, it DOES work with CM9? That was the app I knew worked with CM7...
I read some of the comments on the app and seems CM7 was the highest I could find that it for sure worked with.

I'm not sure, if this works, you'll have to try it out mate. (I don't use CM)
Also, I've herd a fix maybe coming up. Not sure of that either.

Ok - if I get a chance I'll download the latest CM9 nightly and try it today. I'm on OrDroid at the moment because it has no issues with volume.

Ive used Volume+ successfully with a couple Sense ICS roms (ARHD and stock), so it should work with CM9 as well. dont quote me on that tho lol

I also used volume plus when I was using vi. It worked, not like I really wanted it to but it slightly raised my volume better than it was before. Give it a try and let us know how it went ok? Hope it works for you! Good luck

NO need is not mandatory.
For those of you that have an inspire 4g and havent rooted yet, today would be good day to do that. The roms are coming starting today. Just flashed this core droid 2.5 rom, mainly cause i love having battery circle mod, and just loaded setcpu to 1.22 gighrz overclock and im now getting 45+ Mflops and 2500+ quadrant scores. Audio working without flashing stock kernel and youtube and other media streaming apps now working aswell. Today is a good day!
Just flashed this ROM..everything is working so far but the audio is tinny
Hoping anyone can post their results with the Rom and if the following is working:
WIFI
Bluetooth
HSUPA Enabled
Hotspot Capable
Audio Quality Okay
Also is an additional Kernel required to get it working on the Inspire?

WIFI - Working
Bluetooth - Working
HSUPA Enabled - Yes
Hotspot Capable - Yes
Audio Quality Okay - Small amount of static on my end but my girlfriend said everything was perfectly clear from her iphone (I haven't tried any other radios or kernals yet except the telus kernal which worked flawlessly)
EDIT: didnt see your last bit, to answer your question, no you don't need additional kernal, all set after flash

The in-call audio is definitely tinny for me. It sounds like the speaker is shot lol. I've had this problem with all the ROMS I've tried and I always end up going back to stock rooted where the audio quality is perfect.

Why did you not give any credit to LC, as i see it you took his ROM he released today, changed to the inspire in build.prop then added a new launcher and gave him ZERO credit? am i right?
Something smells fishy here...

The "Small zip" ISN'T the ROM, its the Inspiremod. I'm assuming he has yet to upload the ACTUAL ROM.

No prob. So, whats different in this ROM? What exactly is Zeam launcher? All I've ever caught wind of is Trebuchet and Nova. Also, in the LC builds, the camera is glitchy. Is that fixed with this camera?

The camera glitch can be cured 2 ways:
1. Open camera, if it shows black, lock and unlock
2. Use Camera 360.
Either method works fine.
Zeam is a simple yet mildly customizable launcher. Took me away from ADW! Trebuchet is a CM Launcher.
Just give him some slack. He's just offering some help with another option for ICS. No one said You had to download the ROM and test it, did they? Its just another OPTION for us to CHOOSE to flash on our phone. Its not mandatory.

Then dont run it. Doesn't bother me one bit.
This SHOULD NOT be a problem as this section is chopped full of people posting up their own modded MIUI's etc. I'm sure you've already messaged him. It is what it is.

Ahhh, yes. Wipe is needed. Figured it was assumed since I do out of habit lol
Did a cache/dalvick wipe + factory data reset before flashing. Overall impression - not bad for beta, needs some tweaking. Battery life fair. Used 30% in 10hrs. Bluetooth paired normally, but instead of rings got bursts of static when calls made. Camera worked okay. Had to tap button twice to get past black screen. Was told some calls had bit on an echo.

What is this fix? I tried searching but only three threads come up with "bluez"

[Solved] Increase Mic Volume Level on CM-Based ROMs!

**UPDATE 29 MAY**
CM7-RC3 and CM7 nightly 20120527 both work with the March 2012 baseband and have much higher outgoing volume! I'm not sure the issue I opened on the tracker had any part in this, but thanks to all who helped anyways! Your support was very much appreciated.
As CM7-based ROMs sync to the newer source, I am sure that they too will be fixed.
****************
I'm converting this thread into a Call to Arms! If you are frustrated with the low microphone volume on anything based on CM, please visit the thread on CM's issue tracker to leave your comments and "star" the issue. This is NOT an attempt to flood their thread with meaningless garbage. My intent is to let the CyanogenMod team know that this issue is very real and annoying. I think I can speak for most of us in saying that CM is a blessing to the Android world and that we mean no disrespect. My sole intent is to not let this issue get swept under the rug as it has in the past.
If you have a minute, please leave comments both here AND on the issue tracker to ensure this gets taken care of in due time. Please be respectful with your comments, but share your experience with the team in order to let them know that you are affected. Thank you all for your support with this issue.

This project is hereby abandoned by me. I don't have the knowledge, and I don't have the time to learn. If someone else wants to pick this up, I left a fair amount of documentation and research here in the thread and I will be available through PM if you have any questions. The best thing you can do right now is check the official bug report on CM's Issue Tracker, star it and maybe leave a comment or two. Sorry to let you guys down, but I pushed as many buttons as I'm capable of pressing at this point in time. Hopefully RC can figure this one out.
Original post and edits follow:
*Update again* I hit a wall and am not savvy enough to know where else to look. I submitted this bug to the issue tracker on CM's google code site here: http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=5190
Feel free to head over there and "star" it to get updates. I really hope they will help us out. Thanks for the support guys. Going to give them a little bit and see where it takes us.
*Update* Changed thread title for clarity. In the process of trying to unpack/edit/repack a kernel to increase the volume of the microphone. Lucky for me, it's mostly scripts.
Let me start this thread out by saying that I am not a developer, coder, github user, etc. Yes, I'm a noob when it comes to all things coding.
Alright. I searched and searched and searched some more for the commit on CyanogenMod's github. I found it.
https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andr...mmit/a042d3bba7dc7d563ef58dfd2b0811722d924f86
I *think* this is the patch that caused the low microphone volume since October of last year. It could be one of its parent patches, but it's related. This commit is also included in CM's ICS branch, which could be causing the low microphone volume issue that some of us have been experiencing for so long.
I went to edit that file so I could try to fuddle my way through a build (which I've never done before) but I couldn't find the actual file in the github. Was this file removed? Are input volumes adjusted somewhere else now? I'm spoiled by our developers and would love it if someone would try reverting this patch if it's possible. Anyone else feel the same?

Update! bassmadrigal from the CyanogenMod staff helped me locate the microphone volume values. They are in the /sys/devices/platform/star_wm8994/data file. Using an older CM7 (167) build, I was able to modify the volumes until the phone reboots. I tested the voice quality by calling my own voicemail since the volumes can be different while in a call.
Having done this, I flashed a newer CM9 build. The values at the specific registers in that file are indeed different on CM9, but I was unable to modify them. Any modifications to that file via root explorer or adb were ineffective. I even went so far as to delete the file completely, but it was regenerated within seconds. There is some kind of built-in security (either in Android 4.x itself or CM9) that prevents manipulation of this file, and others I'm sure.
Does anyone know of a way to manipulate this file?

From what I'm told, this file is actually part of the kernel. And I know nothing about any of this stuff. Is there anyone who knows how to modify and build their own kernel from source of whom I could ask some questions? I browsed around on Faux's github, but I seriously have no idea what I'm looking at.

Oh definitely, it just seemed to get shoved under the rug like it never happened a bunch of people in Baldwin guy cm7 thread stated it a bunch and it never got any attention if the OP can point someone in thebright direction after he does a bunch reading and reaching out to people then it can get resolved. It is honestly the only "bug" in cm7 that I hate. A bunch of people said they just switched ril's to fix it but I don't think so, I've done plenty of recording and what not with voicemails and I can easily tell between 2.3.3 to cm7 and found a build that was around 150ish

Almost all of the old CM7 builds are still hosted here: http://goo.im/cm/p999/nightly but for some reason the 170's are missing. Haha...
I agree with you on it being the only thing I hate about CM7/9.
Anyway, another update for you guys. I found a guide on how to unpack the kernel and ramdisk from boot.img so I can modify this file, then repack it. Downloading Ubuntu now. Going to install it in a Virtual Machine and see if I can do this. Might take me a bit though. I'm a busy guy
Well, I was able to unpack the kernel and split it into the kernel and ramdisk. The ramdisk contains the "sys" directory, but it's empty. I can't find the file that I need to modify. Maybe it's in the kernel part of the split.
I would just like to say thank you.
And I wish I could help!

Record your self on a stock based rom or leave a voice mail its very noticeable, speaker phone is almost pointless while on cm7/9 you set the phone down 2 feet from your face and they can't hear you practically it sounds like you're whispering.

You're absolutely right mt3g, speakerphone is horrible. And I'm typically kind of a "chin talker" who lets the phone drift down away from the mouth. If I pay attention to holding the phone up further in front of my mouth and speak firmly, I can usually get heard alright on the other side, but I'm used to phones in the past picking up a lot better, and sometimes I need to speak softly if my kids are napping, etc.
FYI, this is my test environment (to eliminate variables):
Always call voicemail to perform the tests, because the input volume can change from just using a voice recorder app to actually in a call.
I play the same part of the same song at the same volume with my phone in the same position every time.
Just nandroiding back and forth between stock/early CM7/late CM7/CM9, there is a major difference.

If I'm not mistaken, custom kernels designed for CM7/9 are based on the original CM7/9 kernels. Regardless, I have personally verified this issue exists with faux's and morfic's kernels.

is there any hope for outgoing call waiting notification

Dear All
Is there any hope to have outgoing call Notification as most of the samsung andriod phone have ?
I mean when you call some one and this person on call the dailer gives you notification ant the person you are trying to call is on anther phone call
I can hear a beeping sound in the speaker and the dialer shows "Waiting" on screen. But then again I'm using the CM9 build. Nonetheless this should be also present on the stock ROM.

It's showing up by default. There's no selection or activation needed. It just handles like that. I'm curios as to weather the stock ROM works this way or not; it probably should, unless HTC tempered with the dialer in some sort.

But I don't think that updating to CM9 is a good idea. I better wait a little bit more since I read the buglist.

Hello, I take no credit for this at all. Just throwing it out in the open so its not burred on the TeamChopsticks cm10 post.

Thank rpr69 for the builds then download them from his link.
I have been using the 9/4 build for a day or so and everything seams fine with it.
IF you need instructions on how to flash this then you should not be using a unofficial nightly.
And if you like these builds dont thank me thank rpr69
For Flickergs2usr figured out how to stop the flickering over on the PA thread:
Open build.Prop with any text editor of your choice, find the line that says "debug.mdpcomp.maxlayer=3"
And change it to say "debug.mdpcomp.maxlayer=2" save it then reboot, this will fix the flickering problem
I Have found that the new quick messaging causes lockups. when turned on
As of 9/12 nightly BT stereo audio is still going through the speaker. BT Stereo audio still not working.
As of 9/18 BT stereo audio is working correctly & stil most stable

I originally made them for myself, but I realized I could share them easily so I did. Camera, camcorder and YouTube have been working since I think the 08/26 build. If I know something doesn't work I note it in the file description. They are usually up by 7am EST, and are plain builds from CM10 and Team Chopsticks repository.

There is still a delay when they first light up, but work fine after the initial delay. And bln works correctly.
As an FYI, the builds finish around 6:30-7am EST, I usually flash it by 8, if there is anything obviously wrong, I will pull it, or at least add a comment to the description. I don't use BLN so I can't comment on that feature. I usually check gmail, exchange, camera, camcorder, youtube and GPS as a quick smoke test.
To see the change log, go here: http://changelog.bbqdroid.org/#skyrocket/cm10/next
Anything committed before 5am EST will be in my builds.

How's the stability? My main problem with alpha3 was it crashed about twice a day. I was going to try out AOKP then try the nightlies. Still on r4ins AOKP build. Pretty smooth but one reboot.

I had mine crash a couple times yesterday. The screen goes black and won't do anything unless you hard reboot. Meaning hold power 10 sec. I found some music and media players don't work, and stock appolo musics doubled.
Edit: Reinstalled a backup of cm9.1.0 then upgraded from there with 9/6 everything seems good so far. Will post back if I get crashes or find anything.
Update: So far I have found intermitten sound issues. Plus after 6 hours use no crash so far but I soft rebooted and there was no signal or data plus data in settings menu, the cycle changed and was no way to turn off and on to see if that would help. Toggle switch didn't help but everything came back after 2 more reboots.
Using Stock kernel with this no over or under clocking.

Is anyone with the crashing issue either overclocking and/or undervolting?
So far i have had 0 problems... im running 05/09 with instagator x and UCLF3 ( debating switching to 6 but i have rogers in canada so i think mine is recommended for signal) ... as well i have a few sound enhancements and gapps 26/7 .... i have had 0 reboots and everything runs clean as **** so far.... the only thing ive noticed is when im playing music ocassionally it cuts out for a split second.

I am in the Toronto area, and I have had very good results with UCLF6 on Rogers, so there is that. I am also using InstgatorX kernel, are you using the eXtreme sound thing that was pulled?
