Ok. Overclocking has never really affected my phone noticeably in terms of heat.
The sensation has an inbuilt fuse ( it doesn't really it is just to explain it ) so when the temperature gets too high and dangerous enough to damage the phone or cause serious damage to the user the phone will power off automatically.
If you want to reduce the temperature of the phone try:
-turning down the brightness
-turning of auto sync
-using leedroid tweaks or it may be part of other tweaks by now as well to turn off the lights of the four UI buttons.
By doing these my temperature remmains very low

What temperatures are acceptable for overclocking?

My sensation is currently overclocked at 1.73ghz, and according to a temperature widget I have it seems to hover between 25-45 degrees. I can only find the one temperature reading, so I think this will be the battery temp. I've set setCPU up to run at 1.73ghz below 35 degrees, then come down to 1.5ghz above it. If it gets to 50 degrees, it's then set to drop to absolute minimum and play a warning sound. I've also set it to drop to minimum when the screen is off to save power if the phone doesn't sleep, and to not exceed 1.2ghz when on charge or during a call. None of them are fixed, they're set to intellidemand or whatever it's called.
Do these settings sound reasonable? What sort of temps would be deemed as normal? I don't want to shorten the life of the phone if I can help it.
Also, if this temperature reading is just for the battery, what would I need to monitor CPU temperature too? Is there an app available so I can actually log the temps to see what happens when playing games, etc?

Anyone?

System tuner pro shows CPU temperature and does logs.

Cheers, I'll give it a try.
What sort of temperatures are acceptable before I risk the CPU's lifespan?

Why do you need these over clock speeds? They will only ultimately increase temp, burn excessive battery and reduce the life span of your device.
Use common sense, these speeds are only worth using for bench mark tests
Personally anything above 43 is to hot for my device, although not same as yours, you can use set CPU to throttle down at this temp

I mainly wanted to overclock since the normal sensation was underclocked in the first place, the sensation xe runs at 1.5ghz and the CPU is the same. So I wanted at least that. What I'm wanting to do now is find how quick it can be before it starts running too hot. Just wondering what's considered too hot in the first place.

My web browsing is much better (faster and smoother) at higher clockspeeds and performance governor. So that's why I run higher speeds. I use my phone for internet stuff more than anything else.
matt
Mine seemed smoother too, for normal use and for my emulators. I found a problem though, setCPU wouldn't let the phone sleep so my battery went from 85% to dead overnight! It also seemed a little unstable even when turned back down to 1.53ghz, so I've uninstalled it and it's now running 1.53ghz just from the kernel. Runs perfectly now and battery life is back to normal. No noticeable difference in performance going from 1.73ghz down to 1.53ghz either, but now the battery temp seems to top out at 35-40 degrees or so, so about 5-10 degrees less than when it was set higher. I'll still give that app a go though so it can monitor and log temps while I'm playing games, etc.

[Q] bottom part of phone getting hot during normal use ?

So the bottom part of the phone, that said where the USB incable goes connected, gets really hot, you can tell a big difference of temps between the top of the screen and the bottom.... Any ideas? I'm oc to 1.5 on virtuous inquisition, just to get it out of the way, the battery is not getting hot.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using
I would say that's normal unless it gets so hot it's difficult to hold..otherwise, the lower half of the device usually gets a little warm during moderate/heavy usage.
Note* Keep in mind if you're flashing different kernels, that that to, can create a lot of heat if you're using the wrong kernels...also overclocking too high can also cause heat issues..
I have the same problem with my phone and I think it's a hardware issue that most HTC phones have.Just go with it.

Well the bottom part is where the SoC is located.
1.5 isn't really an overclock because our SoC is the same and that is the native clock.

I really hope it doesn't damages the hardware and I will try going to the stock kernel and see what happens with the temps down there.

Mine is getting hot sometimes - from hands, from lack of ventilation in silicon case, it's OK if it's not 60 degrees Celsium...Sometimes I check battery temperature to get some relative understanding of normal temperature.
I have owned multiple HTCs and this is the first one that gets relatively hot during 10 minutes of screen on time. I feel like its a hardware fault but HTC is keeping quiet about it. Many other super phones, even more powerful ones lack this issue.
Yeah I noticed mine get's a little hot during use but nothing major to the point I can't even hold it. The hottest it seems to get is when I'm charging it and using it at the same time.

My Sensation XE gets a tiny bit hot?!?

Ok, ill just tell you where I'm up to here... I bought the XE, about a week ago after upgrading from my DHD. And ever since I started the phone up, I realised compared to DHD it is mega hot.. now before you point out, I do know XE has dual core .. I play games, browse websites, facebook etc.. and I find the phone getting extremely hot to the point I've been monitoring it all the time..
Browsing websites, I've seen temps of around 57 Celsius
Playing games, I've seen temps at 69 Celsius
Normal idle is usually hovers between 30-45 Celsius
I don't know if these are normal for a phone, but in a cold room my mobile acts as a radiator.. sometimes its that hot I feel I shouldn't be touching it..
I had my first one last week and I got the exact same result.. rooted and stock.. Sebastian kernal and stock.. ICS/GB.. and everytime the result is the same.. so I took the phone back to carphone and they replaced it with a new one..
This is what is confusing me about whether this is normal, because the outcome is exactly the same... I've underclocked, it did nothing.. it is also nothing to do with my battery as it usually sits at a comfortable 25-37 Celcius and only rises due to my CPU heating my entire phone and also my entire home..
Could someone please help me with a little info on whether this is normal.. or whether I'm entitled to a complete different handset as carphone as the overall experience with this overheating is making me a little edgy as to keeping the phone incase it explodes..
Right now my CPU temp is 59 Celcius, and that's just typing this message "/..
It happens on both XE's and I'm using system tuner to record CPU temp
Thanks guys
69 celcius? Mother of Heat (yea... A meme)
My Sensation also gets hot, but not that much. Maybe 43 Celsius the max temp It has reached. The problem its because of HTC's cheap battery mainly. Though you shouldn't expect your phone to be cool when it's having a load of charge (process) to deal with
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using Tapatalk 2 Beta-2
you can definitely expect your sensation to get hot every now an then. especially while charging and doing anything mildly intensive. usually while playing games like dungeon defenders my phone gets super hot even through the TPU case. it's nothing out of the ordinary though so don't worry. it won't explode in your pants
This is the HOTTEST phone in the market

To check your CPU temp just use system tuner from the market.. and for your battery temp, just search for a battery monitoring app I forgot which one I used as when I found it wasn't my battery I uninstalled
My sensation also gets hot all the time on heavy use.

Open phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
You can remember the "4636" part by seeing that it stands for "info"
This will only show the battery temp tho, but you don't need any 3rd party software
i been gettin same readings on my sensation xe im scared to play games for to long in case it causes a problem with the cpu / gpu... usualy playing games like real racer 2 i get temps up to 70c, i use system tuner to monitor temps..
Look like I had worse temp compare to everyone here.and I wasn't even playing a game.because sensation was too hot to touch.
Here are some pictures and what you said about underclocked is true. It doesn't make any difference and the phone still get very hot.
A new battery may bring your temps down...

i have the same problem, but not that bad. it maybe goes up to 50-60 degrees.
i tested many different roms and kernels.
i have to confirm: underclocking does nothing it still gets hot. i cant say if its the battery from htc, but i can test that soon. i order an anker from amzon. have heard that one is better in other posts here.
i also noticed one thing today. it gets terrible hot while charging and doing stuff. so i tried to charg it from my pc and it does not get that hot anymore. maybe its the charger itself, but i can not confirm that, because it gets hot when not charging to.
what i also saw is that its not that bad anymore after i got a new rom an new kernel. im on vipers and bricked kernel with default settings. no setcpu or system tuner installed.
maybe that hepls

About battery

Hi guys
Does using the device during charging weakens battery
Sent from my GT-S7562 using xda app-developers app
The crucial thing you want to avoid is high temperatures. If you're charging while an app is drawing a lot of current from the battery it may cause the device to become really hot.
But for regular usage as long as the phone stays at normal operating temperatures it shouldn't cause any real damage that would every be noticeable.
Usually if you have your device rooted and have learned about proper rom and kernel setup and kernel configurations you should be able to adjust things to keep temps at a decent level.
sent from my ATM machine I bought Saturday like a boss
Most of the rooted phone will try to run faster with CPU overclocking, so we can't say rooted phone will operate cool.
Best thing is to avoid phone while charging.

Overheating!

Hi,
My explorer has some kind of heating problem.Well its summer now and weather is very hot in asia okay...... But usually when browsing(opera mini) video playback or gaming(medium) the temp remains in 40s C.Its okay it remain below 45C.But when I make a hotspot and use my phone internet on pc with wifi. The temp goes up to 52C! which is really hot.So i guesd I should not use it like that cuz such a temp can damage the battery? multi-tasking also rise the temp.So does the explorer really has such problems? or its just me?

re
So I guess HTC phones usually heat too much.......
Everybody have this, but here question is: Battery getting hot, or the phone, if it's battery, it's not a biggie, if it's the phone, there may be something wrong with yours. When I use it like you, back metal thingy is getting hot but that's not so scary.
re
Well, if the temp goes above 50C, battery stops charging. The dangerous temp for battery is 60C(written on battery). While my one went up to 52C yet.
However, I noticed that the front part of phone also becomes hot.Even the screen becomes hot.It is then when battery is @50C+.
Well, sharing my experience....after listening songs and playing games i.e. continuously using explorer for 2-3 hrs..my temperature reaches to 44-46 deg F. dats max. screen doesn't burn, only the backcover feels hot.
-using stock rom.
overheating
as in my case i when i swiched over to a class 10 memory card my problem was solved
but when i installed sd boost app the problem started again .. unistalled  no much difference in performance ..
Temp. of 52 C is normal for phone,
HTC's Innovation Wins again by providing a Heat Sink at the back panel of our Little pico which really looks premium and maintains the temp. of Internal hardware...
Don't worry, just try to keep it cool in this hot season by sacrificing the overload on processor (Dont multitask !!!)
Do you have overclocked CPU? That may cause the heating. Anywhere near 40 degrees is normal in summers, where the air temperature itself is around 40 degrees. I take my phone to bed, and it usually goes very hot when it goes below the pillow, so hot that i remove the battery and keep it aside for a few minutes.
And yes, the metal on the back cover tends to get heated, nothing to worry.
I would probably quit multitasking, and get a battery saver app that will switch off components like wifi when not in use.

Even if it's overclocked,
most of the time it's working on lower speed.
I overclocked mine to 800 Mhz but it almost never run at 800, only in some games.
