I've been having some problems with my battery temperature...
Usually when I'm not using my phone the temperature stays around 27C. But when I use a small app like messaging for a minute or so it shoots up to about 35C or more.
Another thing is that when I keep my phone for charging it's temperature rises upto 55C or more. Once it went to 60C.
Is this normal or is my battery faulty?
Btw for the battery stats I use Minimalist Text.
I'm on the MIUI ROM by TheFrankenstain. Overclocked to 1.2ghz.
Any input will be helpful. Thanks.

My battery goes up to 55 degrees during charge .. That and the other temperature's are fine.. But touching 60 is abnormal..
Heavy usage during charge is not recommended, and specially with overclock will screw up ur device..

Dont set phone freq to 1.2 ghz always. While charging keep max freq to 800 mhz & min 300 mhz.
Charge, overclock & play an online game over wifi all at the same time and you'll fry your phone dude...

When your phone is not in use and not charging: around 33C and below is completely normal.
When your phone is in charge but not in use: around 40C and below is normal.
When your phone is in use but not charging: then 40C and below is normal depending on what you're running. it may go up to 45C depending on your kernel and max CPU frequency and also how heavily an app consumes resources e.g high graphic games (it also depends on the weather ).
In Summary: 35C and below is completely normal when NOT in use, 45C and below is normal when in use, 50C+ is quiet dangerous in any condition especially when not in use, 60C + Immediately stop using your phone and you'll wanna head to the freezer fast and change your battery or phone.
Always remember: NEVER use you phone while charging.

Actually it got automatically Overclocked when I flashed the MIUI ROM. Any Overclocking app was not installed, so I installed setcpu to make profiles for charging. But problems started to occur after that. So I uninstalled it and those problems disappeared. Well I checked with an app. It remains on 1.2ghz only 14%.
Maybe the temperature is due to the summer. 33C outside.
Anyways I've come up with my own way to keep my phone cool. I place it on a wet cloth. And that does help.

just go easy on the overclocking thing, it might fry your phone you can also try opening the back cover while it charge it's what i do sometimes when my s2 goes reeeally warm -.-

only 33c temp??? In my city solapur its 42c temp but my phone temp remains cool

Ok. But i don't keep the cloth that much wet. Anyways it was due to the overclocking. I flashed the stock rom back and everything was back to normal. Except one little thing. Well that thing needs another thread. I'll not discuss it here.
I'm having the same problem. Just this morning, I was charging my phone and left it under my pillow. I wasn't even using it and when I came back to check my emails it was hella hot! My phone usually gets hot when I'm using it heavily and even more when I'm charging + playing games but this morning was different. I almost thought it's dead lol. I was running cm7. now I'm using miui GB based, phone still overheats but not like before.

Custom rom/kernel is main reason of overheating and others misunderstoods. Keep that in mind :thumbup:

So guys, its a fact we have a small battery for our phone but I was wondering, how do you get the best battery life?
Just post anything! What ROM your using, what kernel, your kernel settings or maybe a tweak you found.
I want this to become a help center for people who suffer from bad battery
EDIT: Also, have you guys expierenced a difference with unfervolting?

Try Greenify in the Play Store. It seems to help for me.
I use a Tasker profile that will disable mobile data when my screen is off and when it's not being used. Don't know if it helps or not I don't worry about battery because I have a a portable battery pack charger thing

I wholeheartedly believe in Greenify! I have it on my tablet and phone. I've seen a jump in battery life by about 30% since installing it. Not sure if you will have the same type of luck or not.
There's many factors that can be affecting your battery. More importantly it depends on the type of rom you are using, assuming it's sense based... Try using elementalx 6.6 kernel, it'll help your battery; tweaked with the right settings. Power saver also seems to help a bit.
This probably isn't what you had in mind but my best tip is to keep my old iPhone with me and use it for media consumption. That way my android always has a full battery for actual getting work done.

I've noticed on CleanRom that maps uses a lot of battery %. I've never looked into it, but I'm guessing you've found the same problem.

Why not just Greenify maps as suggested by others. Did wonders for my battery life, used to go to 15% in the evening, now regularly above 60%. I also use autostarts to kill some other processes that are launched by default
I'm using the stock Android 4.1.1 ROM unrooted. With my normal usage, I can get through two full days. I make sure to toggle off WiFi and mobile data when not in use, as well as toggle on the "battery saver" built into Sense. I also turn off sync for everything (Facebook, Twitter, etc) except for two Gmail accounts which only check for email. It's about on par with my old Nexus One that I moved from. Keep in mind, however, that I just got the phone and these might change, but this is what I've noticed thus far.
A combination of 2xBattery (toggles data connections when screen off) Tasker (toggle data in different times/locations) and Greenify.

When it comes to battery life, the basics really are the most important.
here's a couple:
1. Don't use auto brightness. It tends to keep the display super bright even when it's not needed. The display may very well be the component that draws the most power in the entire phone! Look for widgets that let you select manually (I use "Brightness widget - backlight" from Google Play and even manually, I set the brightest it can go to 79%) or apps that still let you have auto brightness but more controlled (Try "Yet another auto brightness" from Play Store).
2. Use a setup as stock as possible. I know some people are going to disagree with me , but having your phone as close to stock as possible will have the best proven battery life. I think some of the developers here do amazing work on custom roms and kernels, but when people report good battery life you should keep in mind that are so many factors involved that it's hard to replicate it if you want to. Carriers test their phones extensively to ensure good battery life, and while I am NOT saying custom roms and kernels is a bad idea, I AM saying that I believe a stock experience is a more proven option.
3. It also has been proven that undervolting does NOT help with battery life because not only the difference in millivolts is negligible, it may cause instability and finally a reboot, which just happens to be the biggest software-related power drainer.

im running clearrom 6.5 but i havnt been able to get greenify to work really. when i install it, it only shows a couple apps that i dont really use to begin with. correct me if i am mistaken, but greenify will hibernate/shut off running apps and the apps that the greenify app shows are apps that are currently running?
Correct. If the app you want to hibernate isnt running you would have to run it to add it to the hibernate list.

I don't know if I agree 100% on that one. Undervolting can reduce the amount of heat discharge caused by too much voltage being provided. A hot battery affects battery life both in the short term, and the long term.
Yes, not all phones can handle undervolting (because they're already receiving a good amount of voltage out of the box), and will glitch and reboot, which drains battery.
But, for phones like mine (which I can generally UV by about -75mv without adverse effects), the reduction in heat can only be a good thing for my battery life.

Heat itself should not cause your battery to drain quicker. Heat is moreso an effect from the cause of something causing the battery to drain rather than heat causing the battery to drain faster. Heat can damage the battery which would cause it to drain faster... so what I mean to say is heat will often accompany the battery draining quickly but not be the cause of it. Hopefully this post makes sense.

Yeah it's the damage caused by heat that I was talking about. I've heard a hot battery will discharge quicker though. But heat is also a side-effect of the battery providing the CPU with too much voltage, that extra voltage being provided has nowhere to go so that energy ends being dispersed in the form of heat. Which in turn damages the battery.

That is mostly incorrect. The voltage options we can tweak are not enough to make such a big difference, so you can and will still experience heat even with an undervolted cpu, provided the load is the same. And that's my point, that the difference in undervolting in millivolts is negligible yet one reboot can wipe out an entire day's worth of battery life "savings" from an undervolted CPU.
Ok well all I can say is UV'ing definitely decreases heat for me, particularly when playing games (which is when it heats up the most), and I can safely operate without reboots. Before you say it's a placebo effect, I check my temp regularly to verify it.

I am running cm9(beast mode wifi calling one ) atm but I have a heat issue with my phone around the camera and speaker area where the phone is really hot but by the battery n bottom half it is much cooler.
is this normal for you guys? N gals? And even if I turn of the phone n it cools to 91 is shoot back up again

i think that the reason why it heat up is because you overclocking it?
when i set it max it really heat up quickly.
Install betterbatterystats and see how much CPU you are using and on what.

Sometimes I have this problem while charging my phone, it actually will not charge at all through the night. I think this happens when it is warm, because in the summer, the phone overheats in my pocket and dies out

That's a 'feature' of the ICS+ kernels. While 100MHZ is the minimum, if it's actually set to that, the kernel is set to go back to 200MHZ anytime it gets the chance. You can watch this happen if your scheduler/governor app actually updates on current min/max speeds. ROM Toolbox PRO, SetCPU, ROM Control, and CM's Performance controls all display this shifting, though with luck you can sometimes get it to stick at 100MHZ. It just takes some persistence.
The modem on the phone isn't very good.
It even happens on stock where if you go in and out of dead zones, it will "SEARCH" for network and become burning hot, so it's a common problem that happens year round. It's a great way to kill battery. That's also why if you leave you phone in a sock drawer, it's going to last longer than if it's in your pocket walking around.

well i left i think it was kj2 and flashed lb6 and i started using greenify hasn't really happened now

I never got my phone to go into deep sleep when I selected ondemand (or maybe it was ondemandx). I would try a couple of the other governors & see if that would help.

OndemandX gives me good sleep, but forces the phone to minimum speeds when the screen is off. That tends to cause issues if I'm trying to use GPS or music without the screen burning.
As to what will work best... that depends on unique your phone, its apps, any tweaks that have been made, and your specific combination of scheduler/governor settings. I'm a fan of SIO, but sometimes the tweaks make that (and deadline) stick at max MHZ, in which case noop is great. At various times, I go with any of the SA2-based 'intelligent' options (SavagedZen, brazilianwax, SmoothAss, or SmartAssv2) or the OndemandX/Conservative basic sets. The others have gotten stuck more often and tended to allocate more processor than I think it needs.
I've always had the best luck with smartassv2. I think it's a good tradeoff between good battery life and quick processor speedups in order to prevent lag, plus I haven't had the issue of the processor locking up while the screen is off.

That's usually the one I always fall back on too despite new ones all the time and everything, it's my default now on any ROM.
My tablet has been getting really hot lately. So far I can't tell if it's a specific app running in the background making it hot or if it's from continued use but it has never felt this hot before until recently. Does our tablet have that feature that tells you if it's too hot and turns it off if it's at a dangerous temperature? I read that 85°F is average for a different tablet but I don't know if it's different for different devices and how hot is considered to be a dangerous temperature? I've been thinking if it was getting too hot it would notify me like my phone did before, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't depend on that.

It's(P6200) been getting hot for me too but only when using intense graphic processing apps like heavy gameloft game's, sometimes extended use of certain apps also does that but the heat will be very low.(as opposed to HC I didn't have any heating issues at all in any situation)

Well, actually no.
1. Turning down frequency won't help because cpu1 is always governed by userspace. This is due to mpdecision.
2. What, seriously? When an object does work, it loses equivalent work as to validate law of conservation of energy (heat in this case).
All android devices heat. It all boils down to chipset and device chassis. Thankfully, L's chipset is 28nm. This provides space to fit more transistors in a particularly same die size. Thus, more performance and less heat.
Similarly, poorly engineered device cabinet can obstruct air inflow.
3. maybe. I don't have WiFi router at home.
Battery life is infact affected by:
1. User's common sense
2. irregular charging periods
3. Kernel
4. No of apps causing wakelocks
5. Instruction set, chipset
6. Stupid OEM's Tweaks
7. Talking about apple

I know a fix. Just install a fan on to the phone. Seriously dude, phone heating up ocassionally is okay.

The phone is heating up insanely after I upgrade it to 4.2.2 firmware! I guess we have to wait till Sony release source to create customs kernels & Roms!
I don't have that problem at 4.2.2. It's still the same as it was before update. Maybe phone heats up a bit quicker then before on 3G but I don't use it a lot.
