[Q] Controlbear error: connect device and install drivers - General Questions and Answers

I have a htc sensation 4g with hboot 1.27.1100 I've unlocked the bootloader flashed recovery, and rooted the phone.
I'm trying to gain s-off by running controlbear, and using the paper clip trick, but after controlbear reboots the phone it gives me this message : Connect device and install drivers.
I'm assuming it's referring to the device drivers for the phone which are already installed. If it's referring to some other driver I don't know what one it's talking about.
I noticed while using adb it also would not recognize the device, though I was still able to use it to communicate with the phone. Was thinking that might have something to do with it.
Any help would be appreciated.

HTC's 4.0 update really screwed my phone up...Just bumping, don't know what proper etiquette is on this forum for bumps, if it was to early i'm sure i'll hear about it, and will reserve myself for future post.

make sure you have usb debugging on i had the same issue and i didnt have it on so give that a try good luck

[Q]S-Off failing to communicate with phone?

(I posted this in the guide to installing s-off etc etc but yeah I don't know if anyone's going to pay it any mind there :S If I was wrong to create this, I'm sorry ><)
Hi,
I keep getting a Communication interrupted error. I don't know if anyone else had this problem and can help me? I'm a n00b with this s-off thing and I triple checked with like 4 different websites to make sure I'm going the right way with this.
Doing this on Windows, I got the HTC driver, removed anything that would sync the phone to the computer, everything going well up until this point:
Zerging Root... this may take a minute or so..
Sending in Caroline...
Cleaning up...
Rebooting to fastboot...
Whien life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take back the lemons
Waiting for fastboot...
Rebooting to fastboot (again)...
Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try Again.
Press (almost) any key to exit.
What's wrong with it?
also:
I put on the USB Debugging, I turned off Fastboot, and yes, I checked - it is still S-ON *sad*
HTC Sensation 4G (pyramid-1.17.0008, Android: 2.3.3, ROM version: 1.29.531.2)
I have tried with the fastboot on as well
As for these troubleshooting methods, I've been through it over and over:
Revolutionary Hanging on "Method 3"
1. Make sure you have installed all the drivers from above.
2. Please Make Sure you have HTC Sync uninstalled and Droid Explorer uninstalled.
3. Install These Drivers HERE:
4. Basically anything and everything that will allow your phone or other phones to automatically connect or sync to your computer has to be uninstalled
5. Try another Computer or Factory Reset your device as a last resort.
I've tried 3 different computers (I have no access to anyone who has a Linux computer) I've factory resetted my phone twice + my SD card. I really don't know what else to do
I've tried it in Charge Mode, and HTC sync mode as well.
Can anyone help me? :S
you have to do it in charge mode, make sure fast boot is off, and here is the tricky part, ANY app that could sync with the fone, needs to be uninstalled.
for me Zune kept messing with the install cuz it kept trying to sync...
Also, make sure your HBOOT is compatible with the version of revo you are using
so try this:
1) uninstall itunes (and other apple device software), zune, and any htc software (plus the stock drivers)
2) reboot
3) clean the registry (regclean or something similar)
4) reboot
5) reinstall stock drivers then plug in the phone (charge only) and let the pc detect the hardware.
6) unplug the fone and reboot the pc
7) NOW try to S-OFF, should work, this is the process i had to take
Thanks, i tried everything you told me and it still won't work. I'm running out of ideas. Isn't there another method I could go through so I can just flash a custom rom. Lol...
if its unbranded, you can try the HTC method, but im not a fan of their approach to it...revo is much more user friendly in the long run...
also have you tried disconnecting all usb devices other than the keyboard, mouse and phone? also try doing a battery pull and leave it out for 10-15 seconds, and give it another shot
also, what ver of revo u using? the latest? and whats your hboot?
EDIT nm, saw your hboot etc in your first post long night at work
also, this may be a super stab in the dark, try another cable if you have one, just try to eliminate any possible issue
This exactly what I had with my Win7 tappy lappy. Its the "sucky usb stack".
Then I used a win xp 32 bit machine no problems.

yeah, apparently win7 is giving different users this problem, i used WinXP SP2 32bit with no issues
Yup. Definitely related to Win7 64 bit version for me. Although the user didn't report what version they were using.
It's also worth remembering that all USB ports aren't all the same.
I have to use the ports on the front of this particular 32 bit XP workstation for some operations and the ports on the back for other. Magldr for my HD2 never works on the front.....
Like Rev say in their FAQ... there's something about the USB stack on windows that sucks. Not surprising really when we're talking about interop between such dissimilar operating systems (Android vs MS Win). Its gonna be a headache sometimes.
I'm on Win 7 32 bit, when I tested Revolutionary my device wasn't detected at all.
Rebooted many times, installed drivers and did lots of things and still nothing.
I changed USB port, and it worked xD
Try different USB ports and another USB Cable in-case
Gd luck
Edit: Just found out that you tried 3 different computers... Sorry then, if I come up with anything I'll tell you
Edit 2: Can't he try it on Safe Mode? Maybe it would help?
safe mose wont work, the usb stack works even less at that point :/ go windows!
worst case scenario, get a liveCD of ubuntu and boot it from BIOS, thats the easiest alternative to trying on windows

Wow
Way to go Microsoft xD
I'm having the exact same problem as with the poster of this thread. I've tried a fresh install of xp sp3 via vmware on my macbook pro. I've also installed Ubuntu but can't even get the revolutionary.exe file to open. Linux is too foreign for me, can anyone help me with that?
I had to use HTC sync mode in order for it to work on Windows 7 64 bit.

listen to this, his situation was WAYYYYY worst than yours, and he got his fone working perfectly and S-OFF'd
By flashing, I assume you do mean using the revolutionary program? I will try this process a little later and will post results. Thank you
i also had this problem when i wanted to set my sensa s-off. i run the tool several times and i always got this error message. So then i plugged of the phone, plugged it on again and then the tool says my phone is already s-off.
i boot the phone into bootloader and yes, the phone was s-off, on top is the revolutionary text and the bootloader version is 1.17.1111

Need help

I relocked my bootloader and tried running a RUU but it keeps telling me that my phone is not connected. I'm using parallels for mac, I installed the drivers and I notice that when i connect the phone it doesn't say "fastboot usb" but when i push volume down is changes yet it still is unable to detect the phone. I installed the htc drivers but when I connect the phone is shows i dont have the drivers for " HTC Remote NDIS based device"
Could this be because im using parallels instead of a full windows pc?
please help, this is my very first android device and im scared I already ruined it
Yeah parallels is touchy. It works in VMware. Make sure in vm settings the usb device for the phone is set to always available to windows. If it is set to ask then it can lose connection.
Ok, Ill give a try.
I still have another problem. When I try to install the htc drivers, I get an error saying device not found. How am I able to install the drivers now?
I found the best way to get the driver installed is to install HTC sync
Thanks for the replies gunnyman, I have one last problem and hopefully theres a fix. I have a low battery and unable to flash the RUU. Is there a fix?
Is there battery actually low? Just shut down the phone and charge it up.
When I plug in the phone, it boot up on its own into fastboot and it says "fastboot ac". Is it charging?

Fastboot Not Recognized

Ok guys, sorry to start another thread on this but I have been going through thread after thread and searching endlessly for a solution and nothing has worked for me.
I was getting ready to do the S-Off procedures and my device is recognized by computer to transfer files, and adb recognizes the device as well, I was able to get the device ID. Reboot into bootloader and fastboot just hangs there and no fastboot usb. try to enter fastboot command and it just hangs at "waiting for device"
I started going crazy and uninstalled drivers. Installed HTC Sync, (never needed it before). Now when I plug in USB while in Fastboot computer recognizes device but says it is not working properly.
Under device manager > Android USB Devices > (Yellow triangle) My HTC > Device Status ( This device cannot start Code 10), (A request for the USB BOS descriptor failed). Driver version 2.0.7.14. I try to update the driver manually and it says "It appears the right driver is already installed." Tried disabling enabling. Unistalling, plugging back in. Nothing seems to work.
Running Viper 3.2.3
Windows 8 (didnt have the problem before using fastboot)
Sorry for long post. Thanks in advance.

try using this application if you think your device drivers are dirty but installed correctly for usb devices
USBDeview just uninstall whatever devices you want reinitialized especially since they can change even with rom changes so it is good to clear some old ones out by sorting them based on Last Plug/Unplug Date.
I had to use a different Micro-USB cable to get it work. Try that.
Yeah I actually have tried all those steps. Thanks for the replies guy. I check out that application.

If your on Windows 8 problems will occur but there are methods you need to look into. Windows 7 is your ally.
First Uninstalled the drivers for the device using the program in the previous post. Second, make sure your cable is working correctly. Third, make sure you have the correct drivers for you phone on the computer - - HTC Sync causes problems sometimes. Fourth, plug in the phone in while it's on and let the drivers install correctly. Fifth, place the phone in fastboot and let drivers install. Should work.
Remember sometimes you need to restart your computer and try different USB ports. Some users have said 3.0 ports cause problems.
Good luck.

Connecting via USB, cannot find device

Hello, yes this is my first post. Glad to finally be on here.
But, unfortunately it starts off with a problem.
I have the Android Revolution HD XE 7.2 ROM installed on my phone, completely rooted S-OFFed and so on.
My problem is that now I'm starting to get into developing android apps, and trying to get my computer to detect the phone has been very tricky indeed. I'm using Eclipse with the SDK installed, I've developed on other phones, I was using a Samsung one the other day so I know everything is working.
I attempted to install HTC sync which I believe is what I need to make the USB connection work, all worked fine. Only when I use "adb devices" nothing is detected.
So I'm guessing this is either down to the fact the phone is all custom and it doesn't exist to HTC sync, or because I'm running Windows 8.1 and something has screwed up down the line. In device manager my phone is listed as 'Android Device' with a yellow triangle because it can't find any driver automatically, but I'm still able to transfer files to the SD card via usb and everything works, just development doesn't (and yes, debugging mode is active).
Help appreciated, and please treat me as the newcomer I appear to be, use small words

Here is the link of the drivers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217396
You can choose the driver that meet your requirement.
I have already attempted that before actually going ahead and installing the full HTC Sync. I'm beginning to believe the problem must lie somewhere else because the drivers are there and work fine, my phone connects just fine but it's not visible to adb or anything.
EDIT: I managed to fix it by using this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2061435
whether it is the best solution I don't know because it's pretty old, however my phone now gets found by adb.
Thanks for the help guys!

[Q] Need help unlocking bootloader using windows 8.1.1 x64?

Hello everyone. New to the site but I have been reading for the last week or so before I ask for help. I'm trying to unlock the bootloader on my wife's T-Mobile HTC ONE S (S4). I have all the necessary files installed and have tried several different possible HTC drivers solutions to get the token id. In the command prompt it always gets stuck on waiting for device after I type in fastboot oem get_identifier_token. Also, when I'm in fastboot on the bootloader screen the device manager kicks back the failed to enumerate usb device error. I have tried different usb ports and sync cable as well and I still get the same error. When connected normally, device manager picks my phone up like it should under android devices as My HTC. I am on win 8.1.1 in case anyone that helps forgets that I put that in the title. Any help or guidance to a tutorial or another way to unlock the bootloader would be greatly appreciated.

I will try the usb ports on the back when I get home. I will also let you know exactly what it says in device manager as well. Yes, I did try with just leaving the drivers after installing then uninstalling sync. I even tried with the win7 drivers as well for HTC.

It could be that you're out of luck in this case. There are problems with windows 8/8.1 and USB 3.0 to recognize the phone due to the drivers. You could try on a windows 7 machine or get some drivers that works. I know of a solution but only for Intel Xtensible USB 3.0 Controller, don't know any drivers for what you have

my next idea was to create a dualboot environment with win7 or vista installed, but that was last course of action. Ok, so before I do a dual boot I am gonna start fresh. I have the sdk and jdk installed already and I have disabled driver signature enforcement just to be on the safe side as far as win8 issues go with adb. My htc is now booted normally and shows up in device manager under portable devices and says that no mtp drivers are installed for my device. the phone has not installed any drivers automatically but shows up as a disc in case I want to install HSM. should I install HSM or go with HTC sync install then uninstall it? I also have removed the universal adb drivers I had installed before so now it is only adb drivers from sdk.

Oh, I just remembered... On some ROMs, on my win 8.1 I must set MTP mode. In standard UMS mode ADB doesn't work. In MTP mode, there's a device shown as My HTC in device manager. I initially had no driver for it but I made an "update driver" and choose the driver manually from my disk. The location for the drivers was where HTC Sync package installs them. Something like "Program Files/HTC/USB driver"...

Thanks. I will try those tomorrow. I have all the drivers from winxp on up to win8 so i'm going to try each one with the corresponding compatibility mode. They were all in folders on my phone.
Unfortunately I had no luck with any of the drivers on win8.1.1. Luckily I was working on repairing a PC that had win7 on it. I have achieved my goal of unlocking bootloader, root, s-off, supercid and custom rom on my wife's htc one s. Thank you for all the speedy responses and helpful suggestions. I still plan on dual booting win7 on my PC to avoid these issues in the future. One last question; Does anyone one know if wifi calling works on liberty's sense rom v7a? As far as I know, it doesn't support it. But I'm not 100% sure since I don't use this (I think it's more specific to US). This question was asked also in Liberty thread but remained without answer. I guess that if WiFi calling was supported, at least someone would have answered affirmatively.
