Anyone tried a 64GB micro SD? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Anyone? Does it recognize 64GB?

Yeap, works fine. Ive got a 64gb SanDisk Mobile version which is only Class6 (instead of Class10) but it works fine.
Here is the thread that shows that it works as well as telling you how to let the phone format the card, not the SDformat tool.

You have to format it in the phone. It won't have the full 64, but something like 59gb or so.

Thats thanks to the hard drive manufacturers and marketting mis-representing the values.
Hard drive manufacturers calculate hard drive sizes using base 10, where 1000 bytes equals one kilobyte. But computers do everything in binary (base 2), where it takes 1024 bytes to store a kilobyte of data. In addition, the computer’s OS uses part of the drive for a directory to keep track of the actual data. As a result, the usable capacity of a hard drive is typically 90 to 93% of the advertised capacity.
If you want to prove this to yourself, take the 64GB as an example. By the hardware maker's definition, one GB = 1000 MB and one MB = 1000 KB and one KB = 1000 bytes. So 64 GB would be 64 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 bytes (64,000,000,000).
Now, divide 64,000,000,000 by 1,024. Divide the result by 1,024. Divide once more by 1,024 and you will get 59.6gb (rounded).

Awesome. I ordered one and waiting for it to get here.

[DEV] Raid 0

So here is an idea I have. I will be tinkering with this.
But I want to see if I can get anyone else to provide input.
Setup partition and sd partition.
Setup a soft raid 0.
This is the only way I can think of speeding up the bottlenecked disk.
Input.... I don't think its that hard...
The EVO does not have a built in RAID controller so I don't think this would work.
There is only 1 controller that I know of that can run a RAID array off 1 drive and that is the Intel matrix chipset.

He did say soft raid, which is possible...feasible, no idea - possible, yes.
Ah, not up to terms on soft raid. I always run the real deal on my rig.
Putting raid 0 on the SD card would not benefit you in any way because all the data is still traveling through the one pipe.

Not to mention the same card... so, you would be writing the same data to the same card over the same pipe, and there would be exactly 0 difference in write/read speeds.
If you want faster throughput, get a higher class SD card.
Bottleneck? EVO? Erm... The internal memory is about the equivalent of a Class 6-8 SD card. Just get a Class 10 16GB card for $30 and load as many apps on it as possible. Problem solved.
As for RAID... You're doing this all through the same bus (as stated above) AND you'll be taxing the crap out of your CPU, RAM, and NAND. There's a reason RAID controllers have dedicated processors and memory, y'know.

I think the bigger question is... will going above 15 megabytes a second help anything at all or even be noticeable. I get solid 12megabytes per second off a crap 8gb. And none really go over 20 megabytes. Another thing I noticed is that over clocking increases increases read speeds past 12mb so it might he the phone not able to keep up processor wise interpreting the data.

Nice price on 64GB micro SDXC!

I cannot post link, but search Amazon:

It Does. There are a handful (so far) of android phones that will - after reformatting the card. Look it up! The G2x happens to be one of them. I know this because I have been running this card for the last 2 days without a glitch.
Here are some pictures. You lose some memory in the reformatting.
Whoa! you loose about 20GB? that's not worth it eh?
what about that partition? that sounds like a good idea...but could the phone read more that 1 or 2 drives... 1 meaning Internal and 2 the SD...

ROFL. No it was meant to be 64 GB disk but its showing 59.xx hence 4.xx GB gone with the formatting. The available space is what left in his memory card after he filled it partially.
p.S: Still lmao.

You don't "lose" any space. That's how data works.
If you get a 320gb hd, you're only able to use about 95% of the total space.
Go to Google and ask why that happens, it explains it somewhere. Don't just jump to conclusions without first trying to solve/educate why some things are how they are.
Even on the back of some memory cards/hard drives it'll also tell you that you won't be able to use the entire space.

According to ScanDisk they are listed as a Class 10.

Computers see 1GB as 1024mb
Humans see 1GB as 1000mb
When they market their card as 64GB they do it the human version (64000mb)
When your computer sees it, it counts a GB as 1024mb, so obviously it wont end up being 64GB counting that way.
Hope that helps
You actually do get the full 64gb...if you paid attention enough. But it's a matter of the discrepancy between binary numbering and decimal numbering schemes used.
If you do a right click and hit "properties" of your hard drives (where you see the pie chart), and look under "capacity", you'll see a value that hits what you're looking for, if not close. Be it 64gb or 320gb.
My laptop drive is 120GB and shows: 119787220992 bytes (read, 119 billion, just a hair below 120), for a capacity of 111GB. You're not losing 9gb, it's just information being represented differently.

I switched from a 32GB Pny class 10 to this 64GB Sandisk card. I don't see any difference in performance or speed. I use my G2x to stream audio files to my bluetooth headphones all day at work. I have watched a full length movie, taken and watched other videos with my phone during this week. I dont see any drawbacks at all. It took a long time to transfer 29GB from my old card to the new, but this is understandable and normal
I bought this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007WTAJTO and my G2X refused to mount it. not even in recovery.

I know the system files occupy a reasonable space but at least the total storage size should stay 16....am i right.? And that happened only one hour ago.
Or may be i need some sleep!!? Lol
Unfortunately not all those gigabytes are free for us to use. The OS and associated preloaded apps eat up a substantial amount. I had about 12gigs to start. Sorry to have to be the messenger

I know that but we started with the fresh machine ( with the preloaded system files) at 14 .something with the total memory 16
Now after only one week usage i lost one third of the device memory, what do you think could be the reason?
The only thing different i did today is that i installed my new 64 G sandisk Micro SD card
Thanks for the reply any way
I think its weird that it said 16gb... but it probably never did you just thought it did and never realized. Mine also shows 11.66

That means: no email storage, no screenshots, no apps , no picture caching, nothing, just a clean virgin tablet .
And keep it also shut off then it won't consume battery...................
Maybe use it as tray to serve cold drinks ?

16GB TF300T only Reporting 12.59GB

I have a brand new TF300T that has not been rooted. We went to the Settings and looked at the Storage option. It says that my internal storage is 12.59GB, not the 16GB I was expecting.
Now, I understand that when a hard drive is formatted, it does not have all the the amount available. 16GB should come out to maybe 15.5GB available.
I returned it to Best Buy and exchanged it for another one. This one reports the same thing?
Ideas?
I have attached a screen shot.

That looks like 3.5GB not available. Whenever I format a regular HD for my computer, it NEVER loses that much space.

OK? But is it normal to lose 20+% of the hard drive when it is formatted? It seems very excessive.
I would like to see a chart somewhere that tells me how much space I should have available to me on various sized hard drives. Any ideas where I might get something like that?
The OS and pre-installed apps are using part of that 16GB. It isn't reported in the storage screen because you don't have access to it.

I'll provide one link, there are many. Take some of the info with a salt shaker full.
My understanding is one gig is 1074mb not 1024mb as memory chips and drives are sold. This is part of the loss, built in by the method used to determine reported size.
I can setup a 1074mb (not 1024mb) partition as swap and it is listed a 1gig, 1024mb is listed as 1024mb not 1gig. Swap is not formatted.
Other variables enter into the equation as well.
Maybe this will help or at least cause you to continue the search.
Good Luck!:good:

It has nothing to do with the OS. You will learn that the internal storage being advertised is not the amount of space you will get. This applies to sdcards, hard drives, anything. Even if you read on the OnePlus One box it will explain it to you in small text.
If you want to read more, see http://lifehacker.com/5950506/why-doesnt-my-new-hard-drive-show-the-right-amount-of-space
Hard Drives Are Measured One Way, But Marketed Another
Why Doesn't My New Hard Drive Show the Right Amount of Space?
Here's the bigger reason you have less space: computers are based on binary math, which means storage is counted using base 2—not base 10, which is what you see on the box. So, while we measure a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes, Windows actually refers to a kilobyte as 1,024 bytes. Similarly, a megabyte is actually 1,024 kilobytes, a gigabyte is 1,024 megabytes, and so on. That means the actual amount of space on the drive is going to be lower than what you're told, with the difference being bigger as you get to bigger drives. In general, for each gigabyte reported on the box, you'll have about 70MB less space when you plug it in—which means that your 1TB drive has closer to 900GB as measured by Windows.

Oh your OP post was just a bit misleading/confusing ...... you can minimize the space it uses, a lot of the bloatware Google Apps are in the /system/ partition so it uses a lot of space on apps that you most likely won't even be using like Google Videos, Google Books, etc.

I copy pasted a little snippet of a article on why its like that. But I agree, its crappy that its like that because you don't see the full amount. Yeah you could do the calculations and look it up on actual size but its definitely misleading.

Can you please confirm how much space is reserved for apps? Or the entire storage less android system can be used please? Thanks and regards
