[Q] Version of Android and battery consumption. - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
in my Galaxy 3, I have updated software to AOKP build 2 (4.0.3), but I noticed a huge consumption of the battery. Not yet tested this phone in the other versions of Android, so I'd like to know if such a large consumption of the battery, it may be the fault of Android 4.x.x?
If I update my software to Andorid 2.3.7 or 2.2, the battery should work longer? However, I would stick with 4.xx, because the most I like this version.
PS: Is it true that to be released tomorrow AOKP build 3 (4.0.4)?

Oh men! You are my guru! I tested several versions, based on the CM7, but each time, after a few hours, I was updating a different ROM.
I also tested three versions, based on 4.x.x (two, based on CM9), but they were too many unnecessary applications.
Finally, I updated your ROM, it is brilliant! Zero garbage! The only thing that worries me is battery life . It even take pictures, unlike other editions 4.x.x.
I look forward to build 3 (based on Android 4.0.4?).
Regards!

Camera doesn't work in build 3 anymore , it looks like it doesnt work on every 4.0.4 rom, but it does on every 4.0.3.
But whatever, build 3 is released!

According to numbers, Android 4.0 should be better with dealing memory and battery. But because it has many bugs, it still has the memory problems. I think Froyo is the best with battery but for memory, CM7 is a beast!!!

[Q] Differences - Prime and Revolver

What is the difference between the 2 ROMS?
When I do a search all I see are comments like "I'm using X and it's great!"
If there's a list of ROMS with notes about what makes one so great over the other that would be appreciative.
I would like to know this as well.

I think an even better question is "What is the difference between STOCK, Revolver and Prime?"
Revolver 2.5's changelog contains "Improved battery life". Compared to what? Stock 3.2 (8.6.5.9)? Prior Stock 3.2? Prime? Revolver 2.1?
Similarly, PRIME 1.8.2 changelog shows "Choice of Touchpad Circles or Mouse Arrow" and "Lots of bugs fixed (Rotate, Compass, Wifi disconnects)", etc. Are these not in the STOCK 8.6.5.9 as well? (yes, they are)
Disclosure: I've run all versions and don't see much difference between any of them, but I'm currently on PRIME 1.8.4
jhanford,
Good point. That's what I do not understand about these "custom" roms. Seems like they offer the same functions/features as the stock rom so I do not know what exactly is the advantage of using them.
Install them and test them yourself, the proof of wether or not they are better can only be judged by your own user experience and not by what others proclaim.
I noticed a significant performance improvement after flashing Revolver compared to stock.
My browser also no longer randomly locks up and quits when going to sites with flash advertisements. YMMV, of course.
There's not really much difference between the three of them since the source code isn't released and not a lot can be changes. The latter two "custom" roms just have a few tweaks included that make it slightly faster and they usually include special kernel modules such as tunneling, governors, and sound improvements/fixes.
I've ran all three and the difference is minimal as of the current firmware since a lot of stuff is now fixed. Before 3.2 Prime and Clemsyn/Revolver were a lot more useful since IMO they were a lot faster than the official version of 3.1.
I am currently on latest version of Prime but very tempted to give Revoler a try. The only thing stopping is that I do not want to waste the countless hours that I put in to create the "Hubs"
I don't think you'll see significant customizations until Ice Cream Sandwich and the next generation of tablets come out. If you look at the overall history of custom ROMs on Android, they've basically fallen into two camps:
1. Taking something from a newer device that's not officially available for given older device and porting it. That can be new versions of the OS itself, or it could be vendor customizations like newer versions of Sense in the HTC world. Right now, all Honeycomb tablets are getting fast updates to the latest version. As for vendor customizations, there aren't heavy customizations to begin with. Vendors are mostly competing on hardware design right now, throwing in a few widgets and apps that may or may not be useful. But usually customization ports stay within a brand (i.e., an older HTC Sense device gets a newer HTC Sense version). That can be for both technical and legal reasons (even within vendors it might be a legal gray area, but it's generally tolerated). But we're still in the first generation of Honeycomb tablets for all vendors, so even the small customizations that vendors are doing are already on the devices in question.
2. Building a customized ROM from the OS source, aka Cyanogen. Since Honeycomb isn't open source, no dice there. ICS is supposed to return to an open source license.
I don't mean to trivialize what the authors of the custom ROMs that do exist have accomplished. I haven't even tried them yet. There even may be significant improvements they have been able to do within the limits of what they have. But overall, it's going to be nothing like what exists on the phone side, where vendors are improving their custom skins from one generation to the next, there are 3+ major generations to work with, and the source is available. Tablets will get there in a generation or two.
Also remembr that the custom roms are deodexed. The hulu flash mod only plays well with the deodexed roms. But really there isnt much differences bc there is no source so that limits the dev capabilities for now

Back to topic: I took the plunge and installed latest Revolver. So far, I have not found any difference between Revolver and Prime or maybe I just haven't tested it enough yet.

Not really. Then again, I haven't used it much since I flashed revolver.

Was android 4.0 (ICS) a big mistake?

Just wondering why android 4.0 (ICS) had these notable bugs as a major release? like VPN connection issues, text corruption (jumbles up and looks like hieroglyphics) and maybe more (add any you know and I'll update this post)
I mean what did they do on Google before releasing a milestone android version?
P.s: I remember one of the most significant features announced at the press event on October 2011 in Hong Kong was 'unlock by face recognition'. But where is it now? I couldn't find it on any ICS AOSP ROM or Jelly Bean ROM installed on my phone. Was it only for galaxy nexus was shown at the Honh Kong event?
I have that feature on my EVO 3d

It could be faked by a photo and also it didn't work well for older devices where the front camera had a low resolution, hence most rom's removed it.

Does Google keep it on Jelly Bean yet? Or Google removed it on later ICS updates too itself?
All my devices which have been 5 have all been on Ice Cream Sandwich and I had no problems whatsoever by far the best version of Android before jelly bean I have facial recognition on all of them if it was removed it was because the custom ROM that you were on remove it it's a standard feature and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Jelly bean actually enhanced the face recognition feature. You have to blink to unlock the phone. Obviously you can't do that with a picture of your face.

I suppose Face unlock has still to evolve a lot, i mean there could be numerous scenarios / lightning conditions etc. But like NIMBAH mentioned blink to unlock is a good addition
Never had problems in lighting

Depends on what your phone is. Face recognition requries front camera mate.
Anyway, I believe the 4.x series is a massive success. It solves the defragmental issue, improves UI in terms of look and feels and smoothness significantly, while maintains Android's strength of openess and growth.
The VPN thing is minor, and it is ignorant to consider this as a Android's fiasco. Meanwhile, text corruption is caused by your phone's kernel, hence you can't blame it on Google. I sense that you use some legacy phone like Galaxy Y and have bad impression on ICS.
In my opinion Android 4.0 was the best move Google has made yet. Jellybean is nice and all, but ICS made the big changes. Fully HWA ui, deeper account integration with most services and just beautiful to work with. Android has never been this tweakable before. As far as bugs are concerned, I've never encountered any of the problems the OP names.
ICS is beautiful for me.
I'd compare it to Windows 7 whereas Gingerbread was like Vista to me.
Anyways, the launch of ICS really shows the true versatility and strength of Android. It's smoother, easier to use, and more minimalistic than any other version of Android out there. As for the facial recognition feature, it works perfectly fine on CM10 for me. I've used it on CM9 as well.
VPN is definitely an issue, but seeing as I don't use it, it didn't matter to me.
ICS isn't always perfectly functioning on older devices though. So i'd assume that you're running an older device with legacy hardware that just doesn't function properly with ICS (probably an issue porting code and software to the device). I remember trying ICS on my Dad's G2x and it was a nightmare! So I can understand where you're coming from.

Dammit why can't I just remember those days I was on gingerbread (2.3) and its functionality to compare with ICS as a big Change? Should I flash a 2.3 version again and stay 1week or more on it? Is it the only remained way to realize smoothness improvements?

Your main issue was that fact you were using a ported version of the OS with hacked up drivers and files. There will always be issues when you use these types of OS distros. I also used the same device as you but recently switched and let me tell you the desire HD doesn't do it justice. The devs do great work but there is only so much they can do without the proper files.

That's true zelendel, but as far as I know text corruption was as AOSP issue that was present in stock ICS on the Galaxy Nexus too. Haven't seen it since JellyBean so I think it has been fixed in AOSP. Also, development for the DHD has come a long way since you left especially since the release of 3.0.xx kernel by Virtuous Team. The forum has really come back to life. The codefireX 4.2.1 ROM and its 3.0.xx KangBang kernel are pretty awesome, and the phone has never performed better.

CM 10.1 (JB 4.2) on my Cappy = awesome

Hi,
I've had my SGH-I897 Captivate (AT&T) for about a year now, and began reading about rooting and ROMs and personalizing it about five or six months later. I got tired of the AT&T bloatware, the Tethering Manager FC after upgrading from Froyo to Gingerbread via Kies Mini, and the general overall disappointing performance of the phone. I flashed my first ROM back in late April, IIRC, which was CyanogenMod 7.1. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me, although my first attempt at flashing was not very good and I ultimately had to go back to stock. But I learned a lot, and since then went from there to CM 7.2, 9.1, Andromeda, and finally CM 10. When I began running Jelly Bean on my Cappy, I was awestruck at the cleanliness of the OS - the Roboto font made everything pop, and everything just seemed smoother (although I wasn't running the Project Butter version - this was CM).
Last week I decided to go bleeding edge and flashed the pre-nightly version of CM 10.1 (JB 4.2). As with my first attempt at flashing, this one didn't go well, either because of the pre-nightly state of the ROM or whatever. So I restored my CWM backup and went back to CM 10. Later that week, I checked in CM Updater and lo and behold, there was a 10.1 nightly staring me in the face. So I updated (even though the official instructions said "don't update through CM Updater", but oh well), and my Cappy runs like a new phone. I honestly cannot find any issues with the OS at all. Everything works. (I updated the gapps version to the 1212 version which runs with 4.2.) I feel like CM 10.1 has breathed new life into my old hardware (and no, I'm not on CM's payroll :laugh.
Mind you, this is with the baked-in kernel. I have tried the Semaphore 2.8c kernel, but for some reason it just didn't seem as snappy. I haven't tried any of the other JB kernels for fear I'll brick the thing.
Thanks to pawitp and the entire CM and AOSP teams for putting out such a high-quality ROM. You guys rock!
I'd post this in the developers forum but I'm not up to 10 posts yet.
Did you have to factory reset? You make me want to try it. I'm on CM10 right now.
Btw. I find kernels have typical been the biggest player in performance for my phone. I always upgrade to semaphone not sure why you had problems with it.

Several days ago I did the upgrade to 10.1 from 10 without the factory reset - no problems, but wipe the caches). You need to clear the clock data first and do the upgrade from the boot screen (not the update screen in about phone). Do a backup just in case you have problems.

I tried the stable version of CM10, and it seemed to work great except for one thing. I could connect to my employer's Exchange server at all. I tried all kinds of things and it just couldn't connect. I took it to the IT guys and they fiddled with it for a while and couldn't get it to work either. A little quality time with Google told me that JB has a bug that sometimes makes it impossible to connect to corporate exchange accounts. I ended up switching to CM9. Do you know whether CM10.1 fixes that? If so I think I'll give it a try.

with my last (first) android phone, i came to the conclusion that carriers muck up android with their lockdowns, bloatware, and refusal to update non-flagship devices. i've been through a couple of ROMs (AOKP, PA, and now on CM 10.1 until PA releases their 4.2 build). i may get a new phone eventually, but, for now, my Cappy is kickin' it. it's always funny seeing someone with a newer phone running gingerbread and thinking "ah, i remember that boggy, unhelpful, but full of potential mess of a phone." good luck!

I gave my Captivate to my daughter a while back when I changed to the Note 2. I initially set it up with AOKP milestone 6 (ICS 4.0.4). My son has my wife's old Captivate and I updated it recently to the final Cyanogenmod 10.0 release. My daughter's phone has been having battery problems due to wakelock issues. I have considered updating it to the latest CM 10.0 like my son has but it seems SLOW - maybe all the games he has loaded.
Anyway, neither of them care about running the "latest and greatest". They just want a stable fast phone. I know the typical answer is "personal preference" but they don't try other ROMs. I have wondered if JB 4.2.x would work well on old hardware like the Captivate with limited RAM, etc. Neither of them need a lot of fancy options and don't use bluetooth, etc.
Opinions on solid fast ROMs to try?
CM10.1 is still on nightlies and from what I am reading, there are still some probs with power management and wifi.
CM10.0 stable is smooth with no noticable lag on my cappy. I don't overclock.
overall passmark benchmark performance is slightly better than it was on GB KK4.
the slowness on your son's phone is probably due to something running, perhaps games.

So for a stable fast ROM, you would suggest CM 10.0 over AOCP or some of the other 4.1.2 "final" version ROMs like SlimBean?
depends on your personal preference I suppose. you need to get to CM9 at least, preferably 10.0, to flash slim bean, right? So, if it runs well on 10.0, then you could go slim bean
you wrote that you just want the basics, nothing fancy. so, yes, CM10.

Yes, I did. And I didn't really have any problems with Semaphore, it just seemed a little laggy.

I would highly recommend Sephhi's [ROM][4.2.1]Captivating (Xperia Themed)
It is CM10 based and is stripped down to run smooth.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057574
Set today [ROM] [4.2.1] Captivating (Xperia Themed) [9.2] (Lagless bugfixes), Beautiful, smart, but that does not remove the video camera in any resolution, the error does not take off, but simply does not respond to the record button, the camera photographs. What to do?during the call audio output to the speaker, the button to switch to the internal - external speaker does not work. What to do?

Try hellybean 4.2. Hellybean came a long way from when i used it a while back! It's a much smaller and light weight package as compared to the xperia one. Barely any issues. Boot times and first boot are quick. Over clocking is fun again too. I thought it was oc'd at first for being smooth. It's so smooth and stable. One or two things, but nothing compared to others. I like the xperia one but it's heavier with more to be worked. It's running better then aokp 4.1 with semaphore.

3g Problem
I just flashed 4.2.1 AoCP 5 and lost my 3G. Anyone know what's up?

rom suggestion guyzzz

sup guys! I was out of this dev section from a while (got a one x and now a one, HTC FTW) and now my GF got a sensation...
I need a suggestion for a stable bugless rom with sweep2wake and toggles...the fastest you have...or she will leave me, because of the bugs I put in her phone..."you ruined my phone! I want my galaxy w back!! this phone has bugs!!!!" and throws things...
I was looking for albino's cm10.1 (since 10.2 is not so smooth and drains too much battery and cm11 is too buggy now), is there any other ROM I should look for?
hope I made you laugh with this post lol, I was joking about the leaving thing, but she's really pissed off because of my modding addiction...XD and I really need help, I don't know how roms are.
thank you all guys

Sense 3.6 is the last one that looks like a real Sense, everything later lost it's point.
Outdated-maybe, best working-definitely. You said you need something bugless. If you want something newer go with MIUI, it's 4.2.2, you have patched sultan kernel with ION for it (and it also works perfectly with the stock kernel).
I would go for Viper 3.1.4 cos it have full tweaks.

After using CM for a long time I got tired of the battery barely holding a day and decided to go back to the legendary ARHD and it's still the best rom for this phone in my opinion! If you're looking for stability, performance and good battery life, ARHD is definitely the way to go.
I don't really care about the Sense version. I use Apex Launcher and it pretty much looks almost the same like the CM roms I used except for the way the notification bar looks like which is fine with me.
In addition to flashing the rom I also flashed the Battery Percentage Fix / No Recent Apps / Extended Quick Settings, one of the Battery Percentage Mods, the Advanced Power Menu and the HQ Camera which takes much better pics than CM does by the way.
All current apps are working great and I'm glad I'm back using this rom. There's definitely no need to have the latest and newest software on your phone.

ARHD already has HQ camera. I think it's the standard since 6.7 version or so?

I'm actually not sure. If the camera app buttons are green when pressed than it's not. If they're blue than it is the HQ camera.

It actually depends on skin, HTC gives green and Blue sky gives blue.

On my sensation I'm happy with [ROM][Android 4.4.2][Camera works] CM11 with ION [...]
If you prefer JB [ROM][Android 4.3.1][Camera works] CM10.2 with ION [...]
Cm 10 is really stable
ViperS 3.1.4: very good Sense JB ROM with tweaks and so on. I got only a little bug with headphones. If you use headphones without mic, and so need to talk into the phone's mic, then sometimes you are not able to send your speech...you receive very well, but you're not able to talk.(Before someone asks, I use very high quality headphones but unfortunately they are without mic. Listening a lot of music by my mobile during the day, this to talk into the phone's mic is the only way to continue my habits.)
Elegancia: very good Sense ICS ROM with some tweaks (less than ViperS). No bugs found by me, good battery life, but glitches with Maps 7.0, due to hacks in adreno libs. You must downgrade app to Maps 6 (anyway, link is provided in the thread).
CM 10.1 & 10.2 (albinoman, a1-7, etc.): no-Sense ROM, good performance, a lot of available modifications and personalizations, but camera quality is not as Sense ROM, no way to obtain same quality. In some cases, camera app FC, and that's could be a very annoying thing when you want to capture that exact moment!
Actually I use ViperS 5, a Sense 5 JB ROM. No bugs (neither the one with the headphones), good quality pictures, no tweaks (at least, for the moment). IMHO Sense 5 is not so great because of a sort of "relaxing" in design (someone likes that, mine is only an opinion), but this ROM is the one able to give me what I desire at the moment, even if not at all. I'm waiting for a stable CM11 (albinoman's, dominos', a1-7's, no matter whose) with a no bug camera: I tried some version: speed is terrific (it seems like to have a brand 2014 new phone in your hand), and available tweaks/personalizations will be enough to let me forgive the bad quality of the camera.
Everything I wrote, obviously, is from my experience, so someone could be not agree with me.
Which cm11 to choose
Hi - Which CM11 version do you recommend guys? I saw that there are two which are frequently updated:
- [ROM] CyanogenMod 11.0 | Android 4.4.2 KitKat [KANG] [Jan-15]
- [ROM][Android 4.4.2][Camera works] CM11 with ION [Jan 9, 2014]
I am going to install it to one of my friends phone who is not going to tinker it so I would like to install the better one. Currently he has cm10.1 on it from albinoman, which runs fast but it frequently has bugs during calls so that one needs to be replaced by a better room.

IMHO don't install CM11 ROMs, then... They are not completely stable (camera doesn't work properly, and there are some bugs to be fixed).
Try a CM10.2 from albinoman or from a1-7 (sense-less), or a ViperS5 (Sense 5). No or few bugs at all, stability and speed... CM11 has to be improved a little to be considered a good daily driver.
Thanks for the tip. I will go for cm10.2 then. Android1-7's rom seems to be updated more frequtently so I chose that one.

As I always say when I address these kind of threads, your best option is always to test the ROMs for yourself and decide based on your findings.
This is always the most ideal option because only you will know what you truly want out of a ROM and everyone is simply giving opinions, which honestly have no impact on what you choose anyway.
What's ideal for you may be complete rubbish for someone else + there could be an amazing ROM which you miss out on due to the fact that no one suggested it.
As these threads generally lead to fanboy arguments, however, these kind of threads are against the rules.
Therefore, Thread Closed.

What's the most stable Saga ROM Android 4.1+?

Hello
I'm looking for the most stable ROM there is for Desire S that's 4.1 or higher. I've been using some of the ROMs couple of years back but I always came back to 4.0 because it was the most stable. Now, since the 4.0 isn't getting any support from my daily apps I want a change. What would you suggest as a daily user of XDA?
CM11 opendesireproject.org i think (mine runs well with that)

Are you using the latest snapshot build or the newest nightly? I'm on the snapshot build and the battery drain is pretty significant, the google maps are not always launching, snapchat doesn't launch the camera sometimes and there are some rendering bugs. Other than that it's really good. I've quickly gotten used to Google Now and it's great. I can live with it until I get my next phone.
Nightly i used the one before the last one 20160903
