So,
I haven't really had a solid answer to this question. What, if any, are BIG downsides to flashing an internation ROM onto a TMO US phone? Are there any discrepancies as far as usage.
I'm using TMOUS TrickDroid ROM (and absolutely nothing against torxx), I just want to mess around with a couple others - not sure yet - but I want to mess around with others, including International ROMs.
Any solid answer to this? I've read about potential Data speed discrepancies.
Thanks all!
-Brian

Some perceive data issues on eu roms because you see the 3g/h go back and forth, but really the same thing is happening on tmous roms. Only difference is that tmous always keeps the 4g icon up rather its 3g or h, so it appears to be more stable but is not.

What you say about T-Mobile is true but I didn't not have a perceived data issue. Data on my Ville would straight up drop when I had an EU ROM on it. As in no data.

Im on bin droid and I havent had any data drops at all. I did upgrade to the newest radio so maybe that helped

I'm currently on leedroid and have no issues, solid signal. I reach dl speeds of around 20mbs so I'm happy

I have read some members here on XDA take both sides on this issue. Some say it does not make a difference. Others say it does.
Personally for me the connection seems to be slower and more unreliable when flashing an international Rom on a T-Mobile USA device.
Right now I am on LeeDroids Rom with the stock tmobile radio. I did some quick speed tests so you see what I mean.

I really think upgradig the radio will help some people out I upgraded mine and it really helped with data switching. I know the method in the development section is not for the faint of heart but its definitely worth it

Upgrading the radio is really important for signal etc.

Running CM7 Test 4 on the new radio. Finally got 4G to switch on and stay on but my speeds are terribly low (0-2mbps). I believe im running REV A enabled per the advice of someone in the CM7 thread.. Any idea's? I was so happy to see that 4g icon light up but its still running like its on 3g.

It would be helpful to know what area are you from. Could be network issue.
If you're in NYC the speeds should be normal.

For anyone interested it was the network. Rom works fine once its got a lock on 4g. Had it stable all day. Speeds shot back up without a reboot or anything
Hey guys, I've been modding phones since the razer days so i have some grip on what im doing here yet im a bit vexxed at the current situation.
I Carefully rooted and upgraded my sensation to onceICS rom using revoltonary tool, the appropriate firmware and an eventual radio update(just in case)
Since installing that rom i have had NO 4g connectivity. Ive been stuck in 3g dispite having 4g on the stock rom in the same location...
UPDATE i just RUU'd back to stock and i have 4G again. Is it possible that the oneICS rom is botched? Im hesitant to redo the root/custom rom process again if im going to lose 4g but i really dont see how this would affect it lol.
PS Yes, i did a speed test before and after. On th stock rom i hit about 10mps at my window and on the custom roms i was hitting 1.6mps..
Were the two speed tested in the same location?? I have flashed almost everything posted on the development section(Always bored at work), and i never had this issue.
T-Mobile 4g is still 3g, but your phone's hardware has to support a higher speed, which it does.
The 4g icon is actually lying, because its still based on 3g tech, just a faster back end. You're still getting your 4g speeds.

Lolol really? No man thats bs. I went from a nexus s (3g phone) to a 4g sensation and theres a huge difference in network speeds.

Did you miss the part where he said "but your phone's hardware has to support a higher speed"? Nexus did not have hardware support for higher speeds, Sensation does.
Get it?
It could be the Rom... Been seeing some complains about their signal strength is low when in ICS... That's why I'm still hesitant to upgrade... Try other Rom... I could be wrong though...

you missed the point completely. The nexus s doesn't support hspa+, so you'll never get any of the hspa+ speeds regardless of what you do.
The sensation, does. And the 4g/h icon is meaningless, as long as you're getting normal speeds. But the phone has to support hspa+ to get hspa+ speeds.

Great speeds. I've gotten up to 17 Mbps down. I notice you are getting really high pings like I sometimes have. Anyone know why they are so high? I never got anything close to those pings on Verizon or AT&T.
No idea.. by far the longest ping time on any of my devices. G2x, Amaze, MT4G Slide.. weird.

Think we need to wait for the kernel sources to be released, I get really ****ty speeds on CM9, and I believe it's because the kernel is only optimised for the stock ROM.

Hello
I thought this phone was called an HTC Magic, but it appears there is no section for it here. Upon searching myTouch on Google, I get a photo of it.
Here is a photo of the phone I took:

}
(Had to resize it to a width of 500px as it didn't resize automatically)
My question - Is this a myTouch4G? I always called it a Magic.
Anyway, I want to know because I plan to experiment with this phone and install different ROMs etc, see what I can do with it (I've since owned an HTC Desire HD (which has now been lent to my mother, we don't buy separate phones now, she just takes my older ones as you will see why a couple of sentences on )and now a HTC One X) but I need to be sure I don't go off installing ROMs for another phone.. It's served myself, and then my mother (who has been using traditional phones, she's not very "tech-savvy") for near 3 years!
The phone is currently on Android ver 2.2.1.
Thanks to anyone who can help me
Lol. Welcome to XDA.

I think that's a MyTouch 3G. Not 100% but most likely. Look up HTC Magic on the cyanogenmod wiki it'll give you other names of it as well.

That's a magic, all right. On TMobile it was named the MyTouch3G. On Vodaphone, it was the HTC Magic. It's almost 3 years old. You can't put any of todays roms on it. Gingerbread is slow like molasses on that thing. I don't think you can give those away now, but it brings back memories.

Thanks. It's very slow. I only wanted to see what I could do with it, without worrying about bricking it, because if I did, it wouldn't matter.
Actually, it is a htc magic. You can put roms on it and its somewhat slow, but not that slow. I had the Mytouch 3G and in order to flash roms you need to boot into bootloader and see if its PVT Board 32A or 32B. If its 32A you're gonna like the development a lot better. Also you need to know how to change the engineering bootloader I'm sure a sub-forum thread will show you how to do that.
So I ended up activating my phone on 30 4g 5gb cap and 100 min. And i only get these icons and once in a while. 3g icon. My phone just got activated like an hour ago. Sorry for so many question im a mew tmobile costumer. So how do i get "4g"

The G icon is a known problem with any TORXX ROM. Search the viper thread.
So what rom do u reccomend?
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
From what it seems like, you should have 4G. When not using data, your device switches to 3G mode (saves battery). As soon as you start to use data, it switches to 4G. US ROMs show the 4G icon at all times, but the same thing happens. EU ROMs show H instead of 4G but, again, it's all the same. Viper has a glitch where it shows G instead of H, it is annoying.
If you are still skeptical, try what someone mentioned above by typing to code into the dialer and choosing WCDMA preferred or auto modes. As for what ROM to use, it's all the same regarding data. I am on T-Mobile US and use viperOneS with full and stable 4G speeds. I also have the latest radio from the latest EU OTA; 2.31 or something like that.

As they say, opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one...I'd try them all and see what you can live with. Viper seems to be the most feature rich Sense ROM, but you have to accept that your signal indication may not be accurate. As they say in the Viper thread, just think of G as "Great" signal...try running a speed test and you'll probably see that you are getting 4G speeds when it says G
