[Q] Multitask screen - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any way to use xoom's screen as a multitask screen like we usualy do in a desktop pc. I mean, reading a pdf opened in half screen while another app is open in another part.
So we can have two or more app insight on screen at the same time?

Root, and EOS cornerstone rom... it comes wiht a couple bugs, but it can do it.

Lilly Pad
Overskreen
AirCalc
Stickit
these are floating apps which lets you multi task with them

Thanks. But nothing I'm looking for.
I wanna split screen, or something like this, in a way i can read a pdf text and also have a notepad to write in the same screen. Without having to change everytime.

The Cornerstone rom from TeamEOS works. From using it, I was able to work with 3 apps at once. It may be a bit buggy, but it is getting better with every nightly that comes along. The only apps that don't play too nice with Cornerstone are mostly games, but that's understandable.
Hope that helps

[Q] Dumb Q: how to get "home" on stock browser?

This is gonna sound dumb but is there a "home" button that I don't see on the stock browser???
How do i get "home" after surfing a bunch of pages?
The only one I know of is on the top right of the Bookmarks screen
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
Can't you open a new tab, and that is your homepage? Thats what I do.
thank you both for those suggestions, they will work for me.
alternatively, from from the quick menu via the sides, hit the bookmark and it'll be on the upper right of the bookmark screen

yes, enable the quick access menu from the Settings of the stock browser. That will give you buttons like: forward&back&reload, bookmarks, new tab, etc. Basically if you open a new tab that will have your home page.

Why? The stock browser is as good as (as bad as?) any other browser.

That is true enough, but I have found that no matter what browser I try, I always go back to the stock one.
Just my 2 cents,

I just wish there was an ad-blockling plug-in for it.
For all firefox mobile's problems with flash support and appalling image quality the ability to surf without annoying ads everywhere is tempting...

Yea, especially from this site, I guess that is what the xda premium app is for. I have a hell of a time trying to close the ads that pop up on my transformer when browsing this site through the browser.

Dolphin browser shortcuts?

Hi all,
I'm using Dolphin HD NOT Dolphin for Pad as HD offers more features at the moment. However I am missing the back and forward butons so I'm just wondering if there are any keyboard shortcuts to 'mimmick' the back and forward buttons?
Thanks

Well that was kind of a 'None Answer' given the question was about keyboard shortcuts.
I have the same question. I'm using a Microsoft Wedge Keyboard on a Xoom. Fantastic Keyboard by the way.
Since I got the keyboard, i will often place my tablet on the stand an arms lengths awy. Reaching over to the tablet to go to the next or back page is a pain.

I didn't see anywhere in the OP about a keyboard.
At the time Dolphin HD lack the onscreen back and forward button hence my suggestion for him to use "gesture".

Can I open two broswers at once with split screen?

Hi,
With the Note 10.1, can I open up two browsers at once with the split screen function? My best buy doesnt have a demo unit, and would like to know. Thanks in advance.

Just tried it. Looks like the answer is no.
Nope, You can only have one browser and one other selected app i. e. polaris office, video player, email,S-note or gallery. You may be able to use a pop up browser avaiable on google Play and use this as a second browser.
Edit:
l have just tried my suggestion above and can confirm that it is possible by installing a third party pop up browser. The one I am using is called "Onskreen Browser", I have attached a screenshot that shows two browsers and the S-pen app loaded side by side.
Thanks. That will be a good work around.
This is interesting and can be very useful!

Here is a question regarding this?
Does one of the browsers have to be the stock browser to get it to split screen?
Also if you have a the note app open and some other app that supports split, then you open chrome and firefox in separate windows, can you make one of those windows go on one side of the screen and the other window on the other side?
I am work and my note is waiting for me at home, so after work I will have it.

The split screen will only work with the Samsung apps that have been designed to work in split screen mode, the stock browser is the one that Samsung have enabled which means the chrome browser unfortunately will not work in this way. The pop up browser works similar to the pop up video player where it runs on top of all other apps.
I hope the dev team will have a work around with this.
The split screen will be very powerful will two browsers opened at once, and trading tool platform.

ya i know that it works only with samsung apps, but I am still unclear about the 2nd question I asked. Let's I say have the note app and the stock browser open one on each split screen. Can I then open up another browser on top of it via a window on each side of the split?

Unless its how I have demonstrated it on my screenshot then at present the answer is no, a developer or Samsung's developers may incorporate it in the future.

Cool so technically you could have 2 different browser open on different sides of the split screen as long as you have 2 apps that support split screen open

Split Browser
Great discussion!
Both Note 10.1 tablet and Note 2 phone, which support split screen don't allow you to open the same browser app on either sides. You can open the stock browser in one side and Chrome on the other side. However you won't be able to open links from one app into the other half or share bookmarks... etc. They will function as two separate apps.
At Appestry we developed Split Browser to overcome these issues. Here are some of its unique features:
Open links and bookmarks from one half into the other half and/or in a new tab.
Resize the two browser halves by dragging the yellow divider line (just like in Note)
Watch videos in full view within each half.
Start new tabs and switch them between the two halves.
Copy the current page over to the other half.
Press and hold back/forward arrows to view history and jump to a page in the list.
... and a whole lot more.
Search for "Split Browser" in Google Play. There is a 5 minute trial version and a paid full version.
Hope y'all find it useful. Please contact us if you have any questions or feedback for improvements!

Thank you for trying it out. I agree, 5 minutes fly fast. However, you can reopen the app as many times you as want and continue to evaluate other features. We want users to make sure all the features work in their device before they upgrade. Please let us know if there is a particular feature you'd like to see in the app. We're working on adding more new features so stay tuned.
I love my Samsung Note II, way faster than my Note 1. Can't wait to test on the new S4. We're working to add Split Browser to the suite of Samsung's split screen apps.
Cheers!

Agree, project butter is by far the best thing about JB! You can really tell the difference when sliding between home screens and even though it's not the end of the world if there's a microsecond delay I'm kind of allergic to lag.
Then new SNote however, is something that makes the upgrade not as much now brainer as it should be because it's kind of worthless (as I have started a thread about in the app's section here) so if note taking by SNote is a big deal for you I suggest you wait until they got that sorted out.

Also not impressed with JB. Out of box JB on my Note 2 is much better.
Of course that this updated brought much needed features, like Project Butter and performance enhancements that Jelly Bean 4.1 introduces over ICS. The Premium Suite is worth as well, the hover function and the multi-window updates were a nice addition to my (our) already awesome Note 10.1
If you didn't notice much difference with Project Butter, that means that in 4.0, this tablet was already a beast. So why complain (kind of), it's more stuff for free, and it makes a device even more complete/bug-free.

[Q] Worth Rooting for this One Reason?

I want to use the S-Note and Lecture Notes apps for school and they both work quite well, however, I'm having one major problem--the MENU and BACK buttons are driving me nuts (especially the MENU/SETTINGS seeing as how LN has the option to stop the BACK button without being a root user). Every time I lift my hand even a little the menu button pop up (I'm right-handed and the menu is on the right-hand side).
I would be willing to just move that bottom taskbar to the top of my device--can't be done unless you're rooter; I'd be willing to disable them while using certain programs--can't be done unless you're rooted (LN actually has that option but you have to be rooted).
I will not use ANYTHING else--I'm am not a tablet power-user and will never be one--I have a custom-built gaming rig and every imaginable console/multimedia device at home--I don't care to use my tablet for anything except taking notes and reading my PDF's (for which I use eZPDF with no issues whatsoever).
I'm on Android 4.1.2 BTW--any ideas? Thanks in advance.
It's the very same reason I rooted mine. The difference it makes to lecture notes is fantastic.

That's a good question as well. Also, if rooted does that mean that I can no longer update using official channels (Samsung)?
Also, is it realistically possible to mess up the rooting if I don't plan on putting many apps on/removing apps when I'm done. It's my understanding that the rooting process is not what people usually have issues with but rather removal/addition of apps AFTER the rooting is complete.
Any links to an accurate guide (I have 4.1.2 Jelly Bean BTW) would be appreciated.

I use Rotation Lock Adaptive (Free) in reverse portrait mode, to turn my display upside down and that puts the buttons at the top of the Note 2 and thus out of the way. BTW I am not rooted but I do use Nova. Rotation Lock Adaptive (Free) works with TouchWiz also.

Thanks for the advice--maybe I'm missing something but the app still opens upside down...?
I'm quite surprised that they didn't think of either offering the option of disabling the menu presses in a writing app or moving the taskbar to the top.
I just decided to root--went fine--the only thing is whenever I use Lecture Notes with the SU access (blocking the menu taskbar) it takes my wallpaper away. The tablet has it as long as I don't use LN with the block taskbar option enabled.
I rooted for the explicit purpose of using multiwindow on every app.
@ZenTheShogun:
I've used that option several times, but it has never happened to me. Maybe try asking in the Lecture Notes thread if anyone else has that issue?
Thanks--I will.
I was always able to use multi-screen on all programs--maybe because the day I purchased it I updated the OS to JB 4.1.2. The only app I was unable to use in multi-screen (and still can't) is Jotter (I don't care LN is far superior IMO).

GMD Gesture Control?
Or so I was told. Haven't tried it yet because the Lecture Notes option to gray out the taskbar works well (and it's literally all I wanted).
I am still having a problem with my Lecture Notes app removing my wallpaper every time I use it--really weird.

That's a normal glitch according to the developer (see the lecture notes app thread in the note 10.1 themes and apps section). Apparently after JB 4.0 anytime, you disable/hide the task bar it removes your wallpaper. This goes for all apps that disable the task bar. It's just a bug in JB. If you use a live wallpaper, your wallpaper will survive the hiding task bar. It's only an issue with non-live still wallpapers.
Do live wallpapers waste battery at a faster rate?
Also, is there a faster alternative to eZPDF? I'm finding the page turning a little slow--I only use it for PDF's (textbooks)--I'm not big on annotating (engineering doesn't require much) so I just want a solid PDF app that is quick to respond to page-turns.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah a live wallpaper will use a bit more battery life. However with the Note 10.1's already very lengthy battery life, I haven't noticed much of a decrease at all. It's really minimal, at least with the ASUS wallpaper I'm using. I haven't been able to tell the difference between live and still wallpapers. On my nexus 4 with it's more limited battery life, the difference is a bit more noticeable but even then it's only decreased by about 1 hour overall. I honestly can't tell any difference though on the Note but I haven't done any very deliberate/defined tests to measure.
You could try Moon Reader. That's what I use when I don't plan on annotating much. Lecture Notes is really good in case you do decide to annotate. Both will do pdfs but moon reader also does a bunch of other formats.
Yeah--I don't think I can use LN for both though--I keep my problem sets open in a PDF reader and do the actual problems on LN--I was leaning towards Mantano--many have said it's quite good for just reading PDF's (and I'm assuming since I'm a root user I will be able to use it in multi-screen).

you should try the other guys software GMD SPen Control. It has an option to turn off all touch sensors so in this way no matter what you need to do on the screen it requires the pen. great for long handwriting sessions. he has a trial version which is free. the creator is 'StupidIdea' you can look him up here.
