Not to be a smartass, but it just sounds like you're describing scratches. There is no clear coat paint job. They buffed the edge to a gloss, the color is all the way through.
If you could post some pics though it'd be great.
PICTURE
i took multiple pictures and the camera i have at any angle cannot capture the cracking, they are very small in length but there is about 10 of them in parallel to each other and they are not scratches the phone has been in a case i can tell they are cracking i was referencing a cars paint job, when they spray clear coating on the car sometimes you can see cracking it looks like that. the picture is of one side of the phone the other side has a few cracks as well i cannot tell if the cracking is throught the entire thickness of the unibody or not.... you have to look very hard to see them with your eye but once you see them they are unmistakeable. to see the cracking you have to turn the phone to catch the right light. do you think it is worth it to return the phone? i just dont know how the polycarbonate works, if it all a uni body or do they spray something on top of it that could be cracking
That picture sucks.

I have this problem as well. There was a thread earlier in the week where someone had the same problem but its so small and I barely see it in pitch blackness that I could really care less. Also, I have light leakage at the top of my screen and again, not a huge deal. Some people just expect perfect manufacturing, as is normal for the obscene amount this phone is worth retail.

Your post was far more pollutive than OP's. He has a genuine concern and is sharing it with the community, which is exactly what the general forum is for. Why don't you take your bull**** back to the Galaxy Note forums, it's not needed here.
@OP- That sucks, I would definitely take it back and get a replacement. I refuse to settle for anything less than a perfect device and you shouldn't either. It is a brand new phone and will only get worse over time. These things are expensive as hell and manufacturing defects are not acceptable at all.
I hear ya bro I'm particular about my phone I'll prolly return it I expect flaws on refurbish but not new phones. but my concern was it was going eventually chip u just can't get a picture of them they are so small. Thanks for all your replies it's much appreciated and I'll be sure not to pollute the internet too much I know liberals might want to save the DNS servers.
Sorry, but I see nothing. The polycarbonate on top shouldn't have anything on top that can crack. If it's serious to you, just try to return it, no harm in asking.
But if that's your only issue, stick with it, you may end up with a real problem.
Haha I think I just Pee'd a little. Really? Nothing that duct tape wont solve.
Ok... what I posted earlier was meant to be sarcasm. Sorry if I offeneded anyone.
Looking at my wifes One X I just noticed something simmilar near the sim card bay. Looks like a deep scratch.

so I'm beginning to accept the fact that there's not much I can really do about my loose hinge. the truth is, it doesn't really hinder me in during regular use at all. however, its frustrating that I know it could have been better.
I might be satisfied if there was some case or something that secured the screen when open a bit more. maybe something involving magnets. anybody heard of anything like this? anybody wanna brainstorm on how to improvise it?

Dude... forget about it. If its really that bad... return it. Magnets will ruin the built in compass and god knows what other parts. Bad idea. Its supposed to be floatly. Trust me... its a welcom addition compared to the mytouch slide keyboard. The g2 is pretty smooth and as long as it doesn't fall when you hold it in a normal position, who cares...
This is my first post, hehe
bought my G2 on the 6th from Tmo store, mine is pretty solid, not loose at all, upside down, 45 degree angle, the screen doesnt go nowhere, closed or open, if i dont push it, it doesnt move, not even if i forcefully flick it!
im sure you could get a new one from tmobile/htc if it really bothers u, but looking at videos on youtube of the faulty screen, it would sure as hell bother me! good luck!
I'm in the same boat as j.books here. I'm LOVING the phone and while the wiggly hinge isn't an issue in how I use my phone it is just annoying knowing that it could/should have been better. I don't think I'm going to go through the hassle of returning the phone; it runs so well, I'm really afraid to spit in it's eye. :S
I'd contact whoever you got the phone from. If it is terribly loose and wiggly it's either a factory defect, packing fault. Possibly also fault of carrier. Either way if it's that much of an issue you may as well take the time to get to the bottom of it and figure out who to contact for a replacement or where to send your back to get it fixed. It's inconvenient for the user so make that clear when you contact them and demand some compensation.
I called t-mo last week and went to a t-mo store. it wasn't a 'known issue' at that point, and the t-mo store was absolutely worthless in terms of advice. one person was rude, one was nice, but both told me to call customer support, even though I already had.
the more I use the phone, the less of an issue it is. but it still bothers me. esp now that I know some people don't have the loose hinge. my 2 weeks is up on monday so I'm gonna call today and see if I am able to exchange it. problem is, I really don't want to go the whole weekend without it :\

Take it apart, find the springs, and replace them with stronger ones. Other than that, your choices are replace it or live with it. Personally I'd replace the springs since I like to take things apart
Tell me how it goes don't see a G2 dis-assembly vid anywhere around

If you wanted to do this you need self adhesive magnet tape, thinest available less than 1mm or I don't think this mod will help.
Disclaimer. I haven't tried this but am sure it will work.
Cut tape to 2 1/4" x 1/2"
Cut 1/8" wide notch @ 1" to the right of left/rear edge.
Depth of notch [email protected] 1/4" ( the notch is for the small microswitch that senses the phone is closed, this switch also creates the limiting factor of magnet thickness. Bend the hoop upward you say? )
Test fit before you remove the backing ( magnet tape is placed between ribbon cable on left and 3rd hinge on right with notch around the microswitch. )
Good Luck!
PS this mod will hold the screen open and closed with no effect in between. I don't think it'll effect the compass because there is already tons of EMI in these devices, also you can recalibrate the compass and since the magnet is static it should compensate. Again good luck! And post pics if anyone is brave enough to attempt.

thanks dude. I was thinking of something like that, but I wasn't sure any magnetic tape would be thin enough. I looked it up and they never seem to specify the thickness, but there are products described as 'extra thin,' such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Extra-Flexible-Adhesive-Magnetic-Dispenser/dp/B000NNQ1CK ...think it would work?

Umm.... yep that looks like it'll do. When you get it stick some on wax paper, flip upside down, get one of those 6" metal "machinist rulers" , do your layout with a sharp pencil, and cut with exacto knife or new utility blade, test fit before removing wax paper(also compass, gps, etc function). Maybe use some cardboard pieces to hold the hinge open, getting the magnet into position will be the hardest part. Good luck and post pics/review.

Do It!!! I would do it myself but I'm actually happy with my hinge and have to many other projects in the pipeline at the moment.
Apart from magnetic tape, we can also consider velcro/hook & loop
just stick a little at the back of the screen and the upper part of the keyboard
not too much to avoid noise/falling hair/forceful push
just the amount that keeps the screen in position anytime will do
There are replacements on Ebay but none come with instructions. Does anyone know how to take it apart and replace the screen?
Look it up on YouTube. I did it on my first EVO, and I must say, it was quite easy. It might be a little different for your device, but if you have even a little technical expertise, it shouldn't be a problem. WORD OF CAUTION, though. There is adhesive under the digitizer/top screen, so use a heat gun, or hair dryer, to loosen it first. It is like a box shape all the way around under the digitizer/top screen in a thin strip.

I haven't found any teardowns online, but it shouldn't be too hard as long as you have patience and be extremely careful. It looks like once the battery cover is off, there are 4 or 5 screws that you'll need to remove. Once that panel is off you should be halfway there. Just be careful because you're now in the belly of the beast. It would also help to take pictures along the way in case you need to know what goes where when re-assembling the phone.

Anything on this Earth can be shattered by different frequencies and impact. Gorilla Glass doesnt break if its from YOU pushing it in and stuff..Not from drops.
Try cnn.cn if they sell the part they'll have a guide.

Gorilla glass is scratch resistant and shatterproof; however it's still glass. Same principal as "Water Resistant" phones or items, you can't submerse them, but you can get them wet.

Slipped out of my hand while getting up off a chair, fell about 2 feet, landed flat on the glass side onto some tile. Heard a pop sound on impact. It shattered the bottom corner.
I've owned several HTC phones with gorilla glass and this is the first time something like this has happened. I think the fact it has a aluminum housing has something to do with it. Plastic housings can flex a little on impact. Aluminum doesn't flex as much and since glass can, it caused the screen to shatter since the energy had nowhere to go.
Definitely getting a Casemate or Otterbox (if they release it) once I get the digitizer replaced.
I've been looking all over for a tear down but no luck yet. I might just have to wing it and try doing it myself with one of the kits on Ebay. I really hate having to go in blind.
Can you not get it replaced on insurance? I feel for you buddy!
Cnn.cn does have them, probably more reliable than ebay. great opportunity to makes the first guide!
I would buy from cnn.cn here.
Unfortunately they do not have a video up yet but seen as they sell the part, and if you buy it from them, you may be able to request it from them. Worth a try.
i know it can break. its just supposed to be harder than normal. i just wanted to know if it was from a "normal" situation or something out of the ordinary.
will definitely get an otterbox as well. if they ever come out with one..
2 feet drop on tile is how i broke my iphone 3g :/
I know it's not the same as our phone but the steps should be close enough. Here's a teardown video that engadget re-posted today of the EVO 3D http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/01/htc-evo-3d-torn-down-three-dimensional-magic-revealed-video/
I know this thread might be dead but the cracking of the screen happened to me too. I was wondering if anyone knew of a guide or could give me some tips on how to replace the digitizer since I will be attempting to do it myself.
Can you post a pic. Of your broken phone? I would like to see what kind of damage a 2 foot fall made

I dropped my phone yesterday and scratched the chrome bezel that goes around the from of the phone. Where can I get a replacement part or is there any way to repair it?
your best bet is to just put a cover on it, its not easy to change, this cover is good, it covers the bezel

or get an otterbox which is more expensive

o man. that would be awesome. im going to search for it now. lol
This sounds like a CRAZY idea, but I build plastic models, so this might actually work.
Maybe you can try masking off everything on your phone except for the bezel then sand it down til all the chrome is gone (low grit to higher grit for a smooth finish). After cleaning all of it up, use any color spray paint you want to repaint the bezel. You might need primer for it, depending on what kind of paint you use. Maybe topcoat it as well to protect the paint. Just make sure you spray in very light coats and it shouldn't run underneath the masking tape.
Obviously, this will take a lot of work, but that's the only thing I can think of if you can't find spare parts.
Also, the person mbernusg mentioned in his post might've done something similar. Just a random guess though.
Hi,
this is the only thing I could find about bezel replacing:

OHAI,
Well, I have got that phone scratched already somewhere more, somewhere less.
I am interested to paint it originally black, because I see no need spending 30+$ on new case.
Have anybody tried to paint that metal case black? Any tips of colour and lack? I'd go to local paint shop, but at first I am loooking forward of hearing any ideas.
Thank you.
Hey there,
I'd not advise you to paint it. From my understanding the case is coatet like eloxal.. but i don't know what excactly it is.
If you go for paint I'd guess that the paint will wear off quite fast. Another problem with paint is that its not lasting on aluminium (is it alu? at least its not normal steel)..
In the end it might be easier to buy a new case if you get that
hard work but here's an interesting thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293207
I would use anodizing! It is pretty simple process to do in home but need some time. Might be more durable coating than the original and you can use what colour you want
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4TAeCjVEhs&feature=related
I have done that couple times and it's pretty easy thing to do.
I got one tiny tiny dot on mine, which shows the bare casing, by the headphone Jack I got really upset when I saw it I always look after all my devices with great care, and was distraught to see the small cuff.
I tried using a black permanent marker to cover it up. It doesn't work well, as the ink is too dark, making a deep contrast.
It also rubbed off over time, so I thought, just forget about it

This is not actually the case. People who come in to read about problems in these forums, also notice that others have similar problems as they have and THAT is what develops the trend into what are the weaknesses of the phone. All phones will have weaknesses, and realistically everyone who buys one expects it. However we have to set a bar as to what is acceptable and what isnt. I think most of you will agree with me that it is unacceptable with normal everyday use(and i am not a carpenter, a metalurgist, a skyscraper window cleaner, just your average worker that goes to the office),is unacceptable to see scratches, chips, discolorations and things that you should eventually see at least after a year or more of use, especially in a phone that claims that is much more durable with it's either ceramic or anodising methods of development. It is also unacceptable to have a nokia N95 have it's rear plastic painted camera buttom discolor after a year at least chip away and HTC One S to have this done within a month.
Being reasonable, the phone itself, disregarding bugs that can easily be mended with an update, is brilliant. BUT it should deliver as advertised and since it doesnt, that is pure mislead of potential customers, which is a serious fault in advertising.
So back in the topic, discoloration of the rear camera ring color is only going to be saved with a case unfortunately and HTC would only be able to fix it for you, by sending it in for repair for cosmetic damage that you will pay.
I wouldnt try to remove the paint, as aluminium is very soft and even trying to remove it with a sharp object or a blade will make it worse. The best bet would be very high grit sandpaper to get an even surface, after you cover the plastic lens of the camera so as not to scratch that.

You're right, in that they see a pattern developing, but what I was pointing out is that typically of the few having the issue, a larger percentage will post about it than of the many not having the issue. It makes it seem larger than it really is.
And yes, I also agree that the MAO coating issue is much larger than should be acceptable. I'm honestly not surprised, though. But this thread was about the camera ring, so I was speaking to that.
Just think about the MAO process. They're "burning" the outer layer of the aluminum (which try as they might isn't going to always be perfectly clean), which just puts a thin coat of carbon dust on it. But they're doing it with such great amounts of energy, the dust is fusing to its self creating a coating, that appears not to be fused to the aluminum body (not surprising) kind of like Teflon in a frying pan (it's held in by the lip of the frying pan and grooves in the pan, it's not attached to the pan in any significant manner). Carbon, especially super thin carbon, is very brittle, so the coating resists scratches like a champ, but impacts not so much. And any tiny little separation or imperfection between the coating and the body will only make it that much less impact resistant.
I don't know how this escaped a highly educated team of engineers over at HTC, but it hasn't escaped me and it's why I gladly snapped up the grey version without complaining the MAO wasn't available in the US.

i will agree to that. I would assume a thread of one or two people having a problem will easily burn out, while one that has over 75 pages will probably show something more, even if it is similar people reposting.
i too knew that the ceramics tend to respond that way. Ceramic coating is widely used in automotive industry to improve performance in exhaust manifolds keeping the heat inside, but are very prone to chipping which is why they are very careful when assembling them.
I was amazed that this tech. was used on a phone and i trusted HTC with their tests. I was wrong, which is why i didnt go for the grey either,as i didnt like the color+ as an alloy itself being anodised means absolutely nothing when it comes to resistance in scratces. Sure it will not chip, as it doesnt have any coating, but anodising is merely to avoid corrosion, not for any other purposes. So the grey one will scratch easily(and we know that alloy is very soft), and it will loose it's color for it.
So instead of this fancy bodies, i went for a plastic phone!
