[Q]Do I need an LTE data plan? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Just bought the One X off ebay and would like to keep my current plan. Cellular data is not connecting though and says there is a problem with the APN. Tried adding a different APN but it won't let me select it.
Does this have to do with me not switching to an LTE data plan? Any fixes?
Thanks!!!!

Yes. The APN on the One X is setup to use an "LTE" data plan so, in a sense (no pun intended), you will need an "LTE plan". They are the same price as the other data plans so it's not a big deal, just dial "611" and have them switch the plan.
I think this even goes if you don't live in an "LTE area" yet too, it's just the way they provision the phones/APNs/data plans.

You can (and should) get an LTE plan. It doesn't cost anything more, and doesn't "really" change your existing plan. They "technically" have to change the plan, but they have versions of the old plans (for those that are grandfathered in), but with LTE added. That sounds a bit confusing. But for instance, I still had unlimited data with 200 text messages. It took them a few minutes. But they "changed" my plan to unlimited data with LTE and 200 texts.
They have to do this in order to properly provision your account for LTE. Plus, if you are on unlimited data, it will increase your limit (before throttling data speed) from 3 GB (per month) to 5 GB. So its win-win all around.
Just go into the store, and they should be able to fix you up. If you are on unlimited data, just be sure they do it right, as its hard to fix after the fact if they accidentally remove unlimited and put you on a tiered plan. If they can't do it, don't change anything, walk out, and go somewhere else.

Thanks for the replies! Was worried I'd have to upgrade to the new 300mb plan.

Email from AT&T Suggesting "4G Plan"?

I recently purchased an Inspire 4G off of Craigslist, and simply put in my iPhone 4 SIM card. Now - I still have the original $30/month unlimited data plan from my first iPhone 3G.
Tonight I received a text/email combo from AT&T letting me know that I should come in and upgrade my plan to a 4G plan. There was no threat of auto-updating my plan, but both the email and text said I needed to come in.
Has anyone else gotten this email? Will they upgrade/change my plan? Thanks!

There is an unlimited "4G" data plan available. You need to find the right rep that knows what they are doing in order to give you the proper unlimited plan for 4G. I had the 3GS with the unlimited data plan and it took a few tries till the got it right to put me under a 4G plan.
Well - I'm not even in a 4G area, so even if I had it - I wouldn't see any better speeds, correct? Also - how much more per month is it?

There really is no difference in speeds at the moment. As soon as att decides to complete the backhaul you will (hopefully) see a difference. Price is still the same. And stress it enough to them that you don't want to lose your unlimited plan. If they say that you have no other choice, then call back and speak to someone else. I had a few tell me that I will lose it, but i kept calling back and they did it without me losing the unlimited.
If its better for you, go to a corporate store and speak to an english speaking human lol.

Over data limit every month

I have an HTC Inspire and I have the 2gb plan from AT&T. It seems like every month I go over my data limit when most of the time I either don't have signal or I run my task killer to shut down background data. I live in the country so there's no WiFi that I could ease my usage. I've gotta do something to get unlimited data. I have 2 questions:
1. Will AT&T ever come out with a 4G unlimited data plan? (like maybe after the T-mobile merge)
And 2. Is there any way I can use a loophole to get unlimited data?
2...
Why yes, yes there is.

Come join the club of those who got the unlimited data plan that ATT "no longer sells."
They can have my unlimited data when they pry it fromy cold, dead hands.

The goofy thing is that my mother and brother have unlimited on their iPhones and barely use it :/

1. I doubt they will ever create an brand new official marketed truly unlimited data plan for new or existing customers.
2. I actually bought the truly unlimited data plan back when it existed like 5 years ago, and have never let go of it since, so I'm happily grandfathered in. When I changed from my last 3G phone and switched to the Inspire 4G, they "upgraded" my unlimited 3G data plan to 4G unlimited data plan, same price. So for $40 I get truly unlimited no data cap 4G data and unlimited texts. Oh except it's more like $35 a month for that after my Premier discount. I'm never changing my plan again. I'm keeping my unlimited data. Unless of course they offer to upgrade my 4G unlimited to 5G unlimited in a few years time
EDIT: Oh and I never have an Iphone at any point, ever, nor claimed/told ATT that I had one. All WinMo all the time until this Inspire, with hassle free unlimited the entire time.
Didn't the loophole close at the end of April? I was gonna try it with an iPhone 2g but they said something about iTunes agreement changing to close it up or something like that
Can anybody confirm that trick still working?

1. There is/was... you had to be grandfathered in on an unlimited 3G plan to get unlimited 4G data which basically is nothing special. just uses the same "phone" apn that the iphone data plan uses instead of wap.cingular. The 4G unlimited data plan code is: HSDPPB but good luck getting it added if you don't have unlimited data already.
2. there is the itunes/iphone 2g trick which does work for some people if you start with a new fresh itunes account. i hear if the phone isnt kept active for a month or two they can go and change it manually to a 2gb plan if you switch to a different phone immediately... could be wrong but this is what i have heard.
Can you not set up a wifi router in your home to ease your usage load some?

If you had an Unlimited 2g plan, then you can go to a 3 or 4g smartphone and keep your unlimited data plan with no drama at all....well until August 31st when 2g customers get cancelled.
If you didnt have a 2G unlimited smartphone plan, youre screwed. Buy a router.

I dont know if any info is available on the net.
It may only apply to people who were signed up before the Cingular buyout.

That's another problem, I have dial up at the house so I can't use a wireless router to ease the usage. I'm pretty well s.o.l. on that part
Get your hands on a 1st gen iPhail, hard reset it, put your sim in, sync to iTunes, purchase $20 unlimited data package, wait till your acct show that as your device and plan, go to att store and tell them you'd like to have your unlimited data grandfathered to your Inspire, they'll change it while you wait(about a 5minute process), leave store smiling.
Enjoy unlimited data.
This is what I did and now no more worries of going over. In fact, I was consuming 4-5 gigs a month prior but most was on wifi wherever it was available.
I have unlimited data right now.

Will ATT charge more for data on skyrocket?

I already have the old data plan 15$ unlimited (grandfathered) + unlimited family messaging. If I pop my sim into an ATT skyrocket, will they charge me more for the data plan? I would buy the phone off ebay.
I don't think you can pop your sim card in. Lte sim is different I believe.

its the same kind of sim, just lte enabled. My sim would only get me 3G speeds, just want to know if ATT will charge me more for data.
NO. when you get it. Call them and tell them to put your number on you the LTE Sim Card and then your data plan will just transfer. if you have the $30 unlimited grandfathered, it'll carry over. Same price as before. 2GB is still $25
I know it's the same type lol. Just saying you wont get lte without contacting at&t. But no, you shouldn't get charged more or lose you grandfathered plan. But not 100% sure.

That sounds like the MediaNET plan, which AT&T won't grandfather you in unlimited if it is.
If it's from the iPhone 2G or 3G, or you had unlimited data on a smartphone before AT&T got rid of it, they'll put you on LTE unlimited.
I have my phone on an ex-girlfriend's plan. We both have unlimited AT&T data but different plans because she uses an iPhone. She initiated the process for me to take over my piece of the account. Will my unlimited data stay with me if I complete the process?

The only way you will find out is go to a store or call.
If you have the medianet data package tell them to show you where in the terms of service it says they can't grandfather you into unlimited smartphone data. If the can't show you then it just says they will grandfather unlimited data. Push the issue and you'll get it. I know I did it. Went from iPhone unlimited to medianet and then upgraded to an android phone. Used the argument above and I'm on unlimited data again.

Can I use my hox without signing LTE

So Im coming from an iphone4s that was grandfathered into unlimited Internet. Is there anyway for me to use my hox without losing my unlimited plan? I've tried to add different APNs but they aren't able to be selected. I remembered when I had my lg nitro I was using hspa just fine but for some reason it won't register here and I'm having issues texting as well.

Unless you change your plan, you should carry over your Unlimited. I did and so have many others. I now have Unlimited 4g LTE as my data plan.
They will usually ask you if you want to keep your unlimited data (they laugh too because who in their right mind would give it up?).

I Called AT&T and they said there is no way for me to keep unlimited and have lte capabilities
Dont go through AT&T then, go through best buy or radio shack. I'm fairly sure they aren't as restricted as the employees directly under AT&T (meaning they arent forced to make you switch to a different data plan).
I switched to an LTE phone this year and they let me keep my data plan, although it is not unlimited

Here's the key, make sure you contact tech support not customer service. If they don't know the answer they give you the wrong one instead of helping you find the right one.

[Q] Any way around AT&T data throttle?

I just got an unlimited data plan for att from a friend. I did not realize that data gets throttled after 5GB. Any real way around this? I have tried changling apn to wap.cingular but data does not work on that apn. Thanks in advance.

no
Upgrade to an unlimited plan.
buy a Verizon grandfathered (truly) unlimited data account from someone (eg ebay)
move to t-mobile (truly) unlimited data plan
move to at&t mobile share where you don't have a throttle, but pay per GB
the thing is, 3, 4, 5 years ago, it was easy to ditch the throttling. but the carriers got wise to it. all the companies have updated their software, improved their software. now, you can change whatever you want on their phone, but when your phone connects to their network, they get information from it that we dont have access to. they know exactly who you are if you are connected to their network nowadays, no matter what you change.
