I use my AT&T LTE SkyRocket as my daily device which requires an LTE Sim Card (I tried the regular sim card with APN settings from xda and it didn't work). I also have a Captivate that is my backup device in case my SR dies or something. I want to switch out my Captivate for a Galaxy Nexus.
Does anyone know if the LTE Sim Card from my SkyRocket will at least work to provide data on the GSM nexus? Or will I need to have AT&T switch my account to HSPA and get a regular SIM card?
PS. I tried searching and found nothing.
Your sim will work fine in the device. You just wont have LTE. 4G isnt bad though. Your cappy is a 3G. I've always been happy with 3G....dont use alot of data
Your simcard would work fine on any phone. But if the phone doesnt support LTE it will just use 4G and if it doesn't support 4G then 3G.
Eating Kitty's in my Skyrocket fueled by CM9
Had simuliar problem
I recently went from a At&t Galaxy S2 I777 to a Galaxy S2 I727 LTE skyrocket myself found my data didn't work once I switched simcard over to the I727 LTE phone , but once I had data switched to LTE data it worked fine
When I bricked my SR, I put my LTE sim in a 3G captivate. It worked fine. I would assume that it is 'backwards' compatible. But that's just a guess. I could put the sim in my older phones to see but I'm lazy.
I was unaware that the SIM controlled the LTE data access... Wouldn't any SIM work?
Granted, they did give me a new SIM when I went from my 3GS to the Skyrocket, but that may just be since I got it in the store rather than online.
Yeah kinda surprised me when my data would't work on my skyrocket , but I used my same ole sim card in it , with standard data and it just would not work , but did learn the lte data will work on another phone and show data , but when you go from standard data to a LTE phone it won't , lol , once I changed over to LTE data and useing the same simcard , it work's fine now.
But but as far as the answer to the question (( Can you use LTE sim Card in a non_LTE device? )) answer look's like yes , but it won't work going from a standard data sim card unless you change the APN setting's..
I have tested my Skyrocket SIM in my backup phone, which is a Dell Venue and it worked fine. The Venue was purchased unlocked from Dell. I do not know if that makes any difference.
I never could get it to work in my old back flip. But that is an old outdated p.o.s.
I was able to use it on iPhone 3gs

Thanks everyone for your replies. This solidifies my decision to sell my Captivate (used as a backup device) and buy a Galaxy Nexus from Play store.
Now the only thing I will have to decide is which one I will make my primary device:
1) Skyrocket (w 8MP camera)
2) Nexus (w pure Google)
This will be a tough decision since I use my phone camera a LOT and thus the 8MP shooter is important, BUT I also really really really want to install CM9 Black Ice ROM onto the Nexus. I guess I'll find out once I can scrape together enough money for the Nexus.
Thanks again (and feel free to chime in on my SkyRocket vs Nexus dilemma if you want)
I tried using these settings with an ATT Tilt 2/Rhodium and an LTE sim From an iPhone 5. I was able to get the phone and texting to work but not data. I was at a loss until I read this post on the android central forum where the data plans are not compatible... http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-galaxy-s-iii/224898-there-difference-between-lte-sim-3g-sim.html
So now I find myself wondering if the data plan for a Tilt 2 will work in an iPhone 5...
[edit] I confirmed with AT&T that the iPhone 5 data plan is not compatible with an AT&T Tilt2. The Tilt 2 needs a regular "smartphone" plan. Not sure what the difference is.

I currently have an Atrix 4G working great where I'm from but I'm thinking about getting a skyrocket... Will it work with the same sim card my Atrix does...? Obviously it won't have the LTE speeds but I don't care... I also know I have to unlock it with cellunlockr.net that's not that big of a deal...
I did exactly the same thing. Had atrix aquired a skyrocket last week. Popd in my atrix sim could make calls but no data no text no web. So i called att . They need to know u have the lte phone u gota call and tell them or u will have no data they had to punch it in there system then i restarted my phone when she was done and i had data everything worked fine. But i do have anblte plan and wana use my lte so i went too att store this evening and they gave me and programed a lte sim card for free. But if your not uaing at&t obviously youll have to unlock the phone and in that case i dont see why it wouldnt work . Mines locked to att so they were the reason my data wasnt working
See why it wouldn't
I am one of the Atrix 4G people who have hopped on to the SGSIISR, Atrix 4G is used to work fine after unlocking in India. Just unlocked (by paying) last week the SR, I am pretty sure it will work. Will check out next time I am overseas.
You just have to make sure the GPRS/2G/3G/HSPA/LTE bands are supported by carriers wherever you want to use this phone. The phone will not support the T-Mobile 3G bands, so far as data is concerned you will get only Edge.
I have a iPhone 4 now and am eligible for an upgrade...would like get a one x but don't want to carry it to work..(firefighter)..
Would I be able to switch sims back and forth without any issues...?
Same Scenario
I am also an AT&T customer who had the iphone 4 and switched to the HTC One X. I can confirm that switching the SIM card from one phone to the other allows each device to work just fine. No worries here (I was thinking about this question as well before making the decision to upgrade). Hope this helps!

Sorry to be nit-picky, but are you switching from your HOX sim card to your iPhone? Or vice versa. Thank you.

That's exactly what I needed to know....Thanks!!!
Would you still be able to use data if you did that. You can only have one or the other right? (IPhone or smartphone data plan)
Functional data, voice, and text
Nitpicking is fine with me. I received my HOX in the mail initially and used the SIM card out of my iphone 4. With the iphone's SIM card in the HOX I was able to utilize data, voice and text on the new handset. I then went to the AT&T store and was told that my old sim (iphone 4) needed to be re-calibrated in order to take advantage of 4G and LTE network speeds. I received a new SIM card from them and, upon testing it in my iphone, found that I am still able to connect and utilize the 3G network (as well as voice and text services). So, to sum up:
Your old iphone 4 SIM card will work interchangeably in both devices but you will be limited to 3G speeds
A new SIM card will allow for 4G and LTE connectivity in the HOX but still be functional at 3G speeds in the iphone 4
Thank you very much! That's exactly what I wanted to know.
When I went to bestbuy mobile they tried to provision an iPhone microSIM and the system would not allow it. They could only provision one of the new LTE capable micro sims to work with the phone. Good to know it's backwards compatible with 3G. Only thing that sucks is all of my other phones use standard size sims.
If u put iPhone sim in one X then u won't get lte speeds, only 4g...if other way around then lte on one X and 4g on one X..unless the 4s has lte but I don't think it does..I quit iPhone when 4s came out...best decision ever...I will say that sim cards are not made to be taken in/out with the kind of frequency u are talking about...could cause issues after a while..

Hello,
I just purchased a samsung 1727 actually my Infuse quit on me so my friends over at Asurion (At&t's insurance ppl) sent me the skyrocket as my replacement phone.
My question is when I placed my personel SIM card and another sim (both have data plans btw) into the 1727 i noticed I didnt have a data network outside my wifi coverage area. This wasnt an issue with the infuse . Do I have to upgrade to an LTE sim card ? The rep at att.com said my old sim card isnt compatible with the NEW LTE network and she has to provision a new one so it will work in the 1727.. Does this make any sense , has anyone had the same issue thanks for any help .....
Think it makes some sense. I upgraded from a Tilt2 to the i727 when it was first released last year and had no data so I brought it over to local AT&T store. The clerk grabbed a new SIM, scanned it and punched in some stuff into the computer, and my i727 LTE was all set to go.
Needs a new SIM card

I think you are correct
I have the same thing on Rogers in Canada. I called them and they told me the same thing.
I haven't tried getting the new SIM yet, but I will reply back here when I do.
I hope this is the correct thread for this. I have a galaxy s3 rooted, running AOSP hurray. My question is do you guys know if the Verizon S3 is data capable in Japan? There is a service that offers a DATA sim card for 1GB. In theory I can just grab a micro sim and slip it in and data will work. Just wondering if this is correct. I only need data on my phone because I use LINE to talk to everyone I know, so voice and calls aren't important. Thanks for the help!!!
Here is the website that has the sims.

It should in theory! but i dont know if the same applies in ASOP roms, but if you let me know what rom you are running, i will install in on my phone and see if it runs with GSM services for DATA
Hey that would be great! Im running carbon 1.7 4.2.2, and the included kernel. I think it can be done you just have to use APN manager to switch some things around haha

With that Rom, you can use GSM, so you shouldnt have any problems
I bought a verizon 4g lte galaxy s3 16gb I wanted to put it on at&t's network with the straight talk bring your own phone thing. So I got it put the SIM card in activated it then I got Samsung kies and updated my android to 4.3 then I rooted it successfully. But I am only getting edge data speeds and its really slow. I have looked through these forums and googled so much but I really can't find anything. The straight talk box said I could get lte speeds and I really want to know is there a way to get them or at least 3g speeds or just anything faster than edge I think dial up is faster. I will happily donate a good sum if someone can help me with this problem

I think your best bet is sell the Verizon S3 and get an ATT S3 instead. (you could sell on Ebay and get an ATT S3 for about the same price). Unfortunately, it can't be done as Verizon uses CDMA and ATT uses GSM. Means radios are completely different. The most you can get is Edge data speed.
k
It gives me the option in mobile networks to switch to gsm. You absolutely sure there is nothing I can do to increase my data speed. I do have it rooted with supersu titanium backup lucky patched build prop editor and apn back and restore

Unless someone could hack the radio, up to now..none. So yes, the most you could get is edge.

AT&T is straight talk so shouldn't be any issue. I found a thread here you can read up on how to set APN for straight talk http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781935
BTW: Straight talk also offer a "straight talk S3" which using LTE without any modification.
