Stable rom/kernel? - Motorola Triumph

I'm running a rooted stock kernel/rom from VM
I wanted to ask in the dev thread but I don't have enough posts for it but I suppose this is more of a newbie question anyways.
If I put in the bkernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1322982 would I be able to use it with the stock rom?
The part about 66mhz support, Whyzor's latest touchscreen driver (don't know what they changed but my touchscreen is driving me crazy), and tethering is always useful. I just want something stable and my phone auto-reboots randomly so I'm ready to try something new.

Not certain but I think you can. Why not give it a try? Just do a nandroid backup before making the change so you can restore your phone if you don't like the result.
If you want improved performance but want to keep the original look and feel of your phone try the 'Triumph Stock Re-Imagined' ROM by chairshot215. I think it comes with a version of whyzors kernal. I am using it and it runs great, Quadrant score about 2700.
On the other hand, to my knowledge there are 2 things CM7 can't do, WiFi and Blue tooth will not operate at the same time and HDMI is broken. If you must have one of those well I guess you need the stock ROM.

That is pretty unfortunate. I don't use the HDMI out very often but it does prove useful when I want to show things off. And I am usually on wifi when I'm home >.<
I was somewhat hoping a stock rom would preserve the HDMI feature (did not see the wifi/bt issue) and I had hoped changing out the kernel would theoretically fix bugs and add features in the background while preserving the other stuff.
I really need to make a nandroid backup, I still use the stock recovery and one click root.

to my knowledge B_randon has 2 different B_kernels available, one for Stock roms and one for CM7 roms, im not 100% sure if the stock one will work on purely stock or if it has to be running a stock froyo type rom, but i cant see why it wouldnt
as for CM7, the having Wifi and BT enabled causes CPU to max and phone to crash is i bug that im pretty sure was resolved in the later builds
the rom by G60madman called CM7 G60 Style Final no longer has this issue to my knowledge, Altho it still does have the issue where leaving Wifi or BT on may cause it to not go into Deep Sleep Mode, but so far all my research has returned is that is a side effect of the workarounds needed to get wifi and bt to function properly
i currently am running the G60 Style Final on my device and i love it, im Not however running it with the b_randon kernel, due to the fact that in my case atleast the cm7 version of the kernel seems to not get battery life as good as the whyzor based kernel included in the rom

Switching to Cyanogen Mod

Hi guys I'm currenting running BAMF 2.0 and I'm having a lot of problems with charging and USB mounting and so I was wondering if I should switch to CM7. What problems have you guys been having with CM7? Also what kernel and radio should I flash when I run it? Thanks!

You need to use a Froyo radio (like the one in my signature). Also CM7 does have it's own issues: see the CM7 thread for more. I'm using leanKernel2.5.2+tun and it works great. Make sure to flash the kernel in recovery and not in ROM manager or Kernel Manager -- it can cause issues. Some of the charging issues I've seen with the GB Sense Leak seem to have something to do with the kernel, or so I've read in the leanKernel thread. May want to check that out before you switch.
Good luck!
I've been using CM7 as my daily driver since the newest build came out and have had very few problems. The most annoying issue is that in order to get 4g you have to turn 3g on first, then switch to 4g and it will connect, but won't show you how many bars you have. Aside from that everything is working pretty flawlessly for me. I think that it is way better than any of the sense based roms and it's definitely cool to have an AOSP rom since I upgraded from the OG DROID.
I wouldn't say I've been having zero problems, I don't have the updated baseband above (care to point me where I can find that/noob instructions?) but overall I have mixed feelings with the update - most of them are stock-android issues I think. The radios are a mess, I lose 3g regularly and have to restart, gps problems, and bluetooth is a complete disaster (as it was on sense). Other than that, I've had issues with exchange, issues with my contacts (may have been a backup problem), issues with some widgets. Generally it is MUCH faster than sense on bootup, but some games are laggy with nothing else running.
Also: Netflix!
Really looking forward to future updates, once the kinks are worked out I will be pretty happy. Very glad I'm off sense and all that VZ crap is gone.

[CLOSED][KERNEL][UPDATE: 05/24/2012] bKernel-v2.3 & bKernel-CM7-v2.3 - 2.6.32.59[CLOS
Thread closed because I no longer own this device. The download links no longer work. Sorry for any inconvenience.
So it's time for my dumb question of the day. Does this work on CM7?
Nah sorry it doesn't. I may try to make a CM7 version but I don't know yet. I don't use CM so I don't build for it. All my stuff will be stock ROM based unless otherwise noted!
Alrighty. I can accept that. I'm trying to find the best and most stable ROM at the moment for my girlfriend. Preferably one that has wifi tethering but By the sounds of it it is a ***** on this phone.
Hey idk if you know this or not but I was talking to purple today about my phone and one of then said well thank good the stock kernel has iptables. I asked more about it and it's what let's my phone do wireless tethering. He said it isn't to hard to add into a kernel if you have the source, another I don't know.about this phone. But if you have the source for this kernel and want to take a shot at it then you could add that into this kernel. Just my thoughts on it. Also, how is everything coming on this. If the Dev for cm leaves I can't leave my girlfriends phone on a ROM not being supported anymore.

Posted a CM7 version, based off Tickerguy's latest CM7 kernel(found in Beta 7!!)
A new stockROM version of bKernel released. It's DEV-0.23!
Added a new CM7 version with updates from my last StockROM version release. It's super fast!!
Added a EXT3 stock ROM version of bKernel-DEV-0.23 for those of you who are worried about data corruption when using EXT2.
Added CM7-DEV-0.4 version that fixes WiFi hotspot issue on Tickerguy's latest beta build of CM7
Working great so far! I flashed this within minutes after it was posted with the WiFi fix. Running @ 1.5Ghz since I flashed it with no problems. I have profiles set-up in SetCPU to knock the MAX down when the screen turns off and I'm 86% after 3.5 hours of moderate use. WiFi tether is working fine with no issues so far.
Thanks again b_randon! You saved me from the horror of stock on my Intercept and I thank you for that as well!

Ha lol yeah what was your username on SDX? I guess I developed quite a reputation when working on the intercept. I wish I had more time free because I need to release a new intercept ROM and I would like to build a kernel for it as well, but I just have to much stuff to do as it is right now lol!
As long as people continue to like my stuff, I will keep releasing more and more lol!
Same username as on here

I didn't post much on the forums unless I had a problem or a question. I am more of a lurker because I still consider myself a NOOB and don't want to ruffle peoples feathers. I'll tell you though, I was flipping back and forth between the three new phones on VM and I chose the Triumph because I saw that you were dev'ing for it. Anyway...enough of that.
I have noticed, after using it for a day or so, that the hotspot will intermittently turn off and on. The thing is that I didn't test the hotspot significantly prior to flashing your kernel so I don't know if it was just that way after the CM7 0.8 update or after flashing your kernel.
I will test it some more in the next few days and maybe re-flash CM7 0.8 without your kernel to see if the hotspot bug is still there. I'll let you know.
WiFi Tether Working Fine
I just wanted to give you an update on my WiFi testing.
Apparently, the WiFi tether issues I was having as stated in my earlier post were just anomalous. Since then I have tested it a few times and seem to have no more problems.
Thanks again for your AWESOME work and I look forward to any further work you do for this phone.
BTW...If you have the time, check out this link to my problem over on SDX and see if you can help out at all or have any ideas.

Installed this kernel and really like it, hopefully more enhancements will be added in the future. Just one minor thing I'd like is to be able to set frequency for OC/UC from within CM7's settings menu. Thanks.
UPDATE: Noticed it uses more battery just idling in airplane mode than TheOC, about 1-2%/hr vs <0.5%/hr. Going back to that one, the MT is fast enough for me, so battery life is more important.
Updated to stock rom version 0.24-DEV and CM7 version 0.5-DEV. OP updated
Updated to v1.01
I have update the FroYo kernel to v2.0!! I promise its the fastest kernel available for FroYo. I have patched the sources up to the Linux kernel 2.6.32.59 which is as high as you can go in the 2.6.32 kernel. I am still working on getting my CM7 kernel updated and I haven't got to test it yet on the new CM7 builds, but I will!!
Enjoy!!
I have just updated both kernels. The FroYo is at v2.2 and the CM7 kernel is a v1.4. They both include the same changes, and they both run very good.
I have flashed the CM7 one to g60's latest CM7 and it works fine, and it should work on any flavor of CM7.
I have flashed the FroYo kernel to bROM and the stock ROM and they both booted up fine. I have not been able to reproduce the hang at the splash screen that some of you all are experiencing on the stock ROM, but I am trying to recreate it so I can figure out what is happening. This latest kernel should flash fine, but if not, know that I am still trying to figure out what is causing it!
I changed zRam around a bit, and now it is setup by default with a disksize of around 96 mb, which I run 100 mb, but now all you should have to do is call mkswap on /dev/zram0 (on the FroYo kernel) and zRam should work fine!
Hope everyone enjoys the new kernels, and keep on the lookout for CM7 bROM edition, its in the works right now!!
im in love the the CM7 kernel =]

[Q] Most stable Gingerbread ROM

Hi i was wondering what the most stable gingerbread rom is right now for the G2x? I was using eagleblood's ics rom but I want to be able to use camera, browser and internal storage for music (I dont have an external sd card right now). but yeah tahts my question. I heard the one from lg/tmobile isnt the best
Stock or custom? Cm7 I feel is the best, but some might disagree.

My wife has EaglesBlood GB on her phone, and she says it's really stable for her. On occasion, it freezes up on AC power, but other than that, it works really well.
And, like mt3g said, CM7 also works really well. Although others complain that it's buggy for them, but that's just the nature of these phones: what works for one phone, doesn't work well for another. Trial and error is your strange bedfellow.

I was looking at the android developement section and tehre are like 10 idk what to choose lol

Ya but you have to use the new baseband zip file owain created. Its in the op oh his thread.

If you want something easy to customize, I recommend Hellfire Phoenix over EaglesBlood because its based on the newest CM7 source, which includes a lot of fixes and more tweaks.
Now if you want a stock look (along with that better stock battery life), I recommend Bionix Reloaded v1.4.1 because its heavily tweaked for better battery life, and gives you all the stock Tmo apps like Wifi Calling, DLNA Sharing, etc.
The kernel is important too, and I always used Faux's kernel without any problems. In fact, using Faux helped solve some, as people running other kernels weren't able to play games such as Draw Something.

I like CM7, but have been running Hell Fire Phoenix for a LONG time, and love it.
Specific reqs
My wife is a medical professional and is sometimes "on call". I bought our phones a year ago, and didn't switch from stock 2.2.2, because no ROM/kernel (if I'm using those terms correctly) seem to be able to fix the Black Screen Of Death. So now I wonder the same - which ROM and or kernel is the most stable? She loves the stock LG camera, doesn't use BT nor WiFi calling - she NEEDS STABILITY!!! I know I can search thru the dev forum, but there are many posts, some by zealots. I'm looking for opinions from people who have tried many. It could be that the new LG V21Y will be good for her....
She doesn't need to customize - she just wants a phone that is working every time she pulls it out of her purse.
I vote for LG's stock 2.3.4 with new baseband.
My wife has not rebooted her G2x since updating to the new V21y/2.3.4. It's been at least a month for her w/o ANY complaints. She used to ***** at least daily about needing to pull the battery or reboot. Call quality is much improved, but what really impresses me is the speed and accuracy of the GPS now (not sure how much that matters for your wife). Battery seems to be at least as good as when I run the latest CM Nightly with Morfic's Trinity ELP kernel underclocked.
I too keep a nandroid backup of the new stock rom on my G2x. I find it the most stable of anything I've tried. Recently I've been on Hellfire Phoenix w/ either Morfic's ELP or Faux's 50b6 kernel. I've also been through all the recent Cyanogenmod releases lately.
Benefits of the stock ROM...
-No black screens of death
-Great battery life
-Clear in-call sound
-Quick GPS locks
-Minimal force closes
Compared to CM-based ROM's I mostly miss the brightness controlled by sliding across the status bar, the status bar toggles, the CM themes, and the "render effect" that allows me to pick the hue of the screen. I like to run the red one (least bright) when I just can't stop using the phone at night.
I am beginning to play with the rooted 2.3.4 (Thanks kwes1020) in hopes of regaining some of that custom functionality that I miss from the CM-based builds...
Appreciative lurker, first time poster
This thread looks like the best one to get my questions answered. TIA.
Brand new G2X (got the $30 T-mobile Walmart plan), running 2.3.4 on the March 2012 BB, kernel 2.6.32.9 (if that matters)
Basically I'm looking for something stable, though I am interested in customization.
Features that are important to me:
Battery Life, speed, GPS, WiFi Calling, Bluetooth streaming (but dont care about Bluetooth calling), fast camera
Based on all my reading in these forums, I think I should be looking for a GingerBread ROM that allows some neat customization. CM7 7.2 Stable seems to be the most recommended right now. Is that right?
Also, though I have a couple years experience with Android, this will be the first time I root a phone and install a custom ROM. I was planning to use the video tutorials at theunlockr.com to start the process. Having watched all those, it looks like there are 3 steps:
1. Root: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2x/
2. Flash Custom Recovery Image: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-flash-a-custom-recovery-image-on-the-t-mobile-g2x/
3. Load Custom ROM: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-t-mobile-g2x/
However, I saw in another thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761772&page=2 ) that "There is no need to root your stock Rom if you are using NVFlash to flash CWM."
So, is this a newer method or the same thing that unlockr.com is instructing me to do?
I know that's alot, but thanks for any advice...

Well, I rooted my phone for the first time about 3 months ago and I used the unlockr method. As long as you follow step by step instructions everything should go smoothly, I screwed it up and had to reload stock rom, but that just made me understand the process better.
As for which ROM to get, I tried various ones Eaglesblood, Hellfire both ICS and GB and I found that the one I liked the best was Hellfire CM7.2 supertweaked. I couldn't do ICS because I actually want to watch videos on my phone and it was too laggy. However, Hellfire ran smoothly and the battery life is amazing compared to stock. I have had this phone on mostly standby for a whole day and it was still on 60% battery life. There are no problems with wifi and camera is good. I am not sure about bluetooth since i don't use it, but the news is that there will soon be fixes to any bluetooth issues.
An extra piece of advice, if you are going to root your phone and I recommend you get the Auto Memory Manager and FasterGPS app. The former is better than app killer, which are bad for your device and the second will immensely increase GPS lock on time.

Q Radio and SMS

Currently on cyanogenmod 10 Nov 13 stable
I haven't done anything else to it. My question is that my data pretty much completely drops in malls. Which normally doesn't happen with Verizon in my areas. Is this due to the rom? If so, does changing to a jb tw rom change that? Or stock rom only.
Second if I do move to a custom jb tw rom will I be able to install the cm sms? I don't like the stock one. Ex cleanrom
Does changing the kernel on cm10 affect anything. A Grey area for me
Thank you for any input in advance.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
That was/is a known issue with CM, data drops. Im not sure if its been fixed or not so not 100% sure if its still a issue. TW roms dont have that issue at so you should see better data with running those. Yes AOSP mms has been ported to work on TW, I use this one and it works flawlessly. As for the kernel you will see better performance and depending on the kernel you can underclock/overclock and undervolt. You can just make a nandroid of your current setup and flash a TW rom and try it out, if you dont like it just restore your backup.
I really doubt that it is the rom at this point in it's development. The SG3 has about the worst radio I have ever had in a phone. My SG3 can only make calls and send/receive SMS in two places in my house-- my old DX and friends and families other phones work in any room in my house including the basement. I restored back to the stock rom and took all the OTA's yesterday and my phones performance has not changed one bit. I had VZW replace the device once when about a month old due to this issue, the replacement they sent had absolutely no WiFi reception, they replaced that and a few months later that phone destroyed itself when I plugged in a OTG cable, I'm on my fourth now and the camera doesn’t focus, its got a giant black screen inkblot, and the reception issue is still the same. I am going to duke it out w/ Verizon again in a bit to try to get it replaced again. Supposedly some of these devices have working radios...

New SGS4G owner looking for advice

I recently acquired an sgs4g and previously owned a Vibrant. I understand that the sgs4g is specifc on roms, but can't seem to find one that is 100% working. Can someone explain to me what the common issues are and the history/likelyhood of them being fixed?
I understand the following may or not may not work:
GPS (used to this being wonky, assume there are workarounds and it can be made to work)
Notification Lights (just got mine back with Paranoid, really would miss them)
Video Recorder (I am ok with this as a causality, I never use it)
HotSpot (I love this when traveling, it's part of the core functionality of the phone for me. I could get by with a straight tether though).
I ran Paranoid Android on my Vibrant and loved it. It was the reason I chose to stick with my Galaxy and not upgrade to the newest model.
Thanks
JB is still in alpha stages, especially if you care about stability and location services.
ICS is mostly working. You will probably need to patch your build.prop for GPS unless you decide to use Ultragen.
GB is fully working.
GPS - Problematic as listed above. Not working on JB, works on ICS with build.prop line added, works on GB.
Notification Lights - Phone doesn't have a notification LED. Sorry.
Video Recorder - Not working on JB, works on ICS/GB.
HotSpot - Not working on JB, works on ICS/GB. May work on JB with third party apps like Barnacle.
The JB bugs above are likely to get fixed if we don't annoy the developers too much and provide useful logs when requested. Other bugs may or may not get fixed depending on how annoying the people requesting them happen to be and whether or not the developers want it themselves.
If your goal is just 100% stability, go with Barebones GB. It's a very nice debloated stock and about as stable as you can get.

I am currently just updating the phone with Kies to GB. I may try the debloated Gb first and maybe ICS after. I ran ICS on my Vibrant, it was great. I have a feeling a lot of the things I liked were aesthetic choices and could be duplicated on GB. (Ex: Home screen, newest gmail widget) provided they are supported in GB.
" Notification Lights - Phone doesn't have a notification LED. Sorry."
Er, I meant the keys at the bottom, they light up on missed calls etc.
Thank you for the input, that's exactly what I needed. Any suggestions on GB and ICS roms (names)? I know it's kind of up to the user ultimately and expect opinions to vary.
Thanks
Ah! What you need then is the BLN Control app for BackLight Notifications from the Play Store. And either ICS or GB and a kernel that supports it... most do, just avoid the Proton ICS kernel, as Beastmode doesn't like BLN. Proton may eventually get it, but if that's something on your "want. want. want." list, may as go with a kernel that supports it now.
Alternatively, the NoLED app will give you an on-screen notification that's configurable and works without any kernel modification needed.
GB Roms to try: Barebones. Valhalla. Valhalla Black.
Barebones is very similar to stock. Minimal skinning, everything just works, and it's a slim/sleek ROM as well. The one I generally suggest for people starting out.
Valhalla is the beautifully tweaked ROM that many GB people still love as their daily driver. It's farther off of stock, but does work very well.
Valhalla Black is a further-tweaked Valhalla. Some parts may be more difficult to see, but in general if you like the look, it's great.
For ICS: AOKP, Slim, HebMIUI, Fah-Q CM9.
AOKP is my general fav ICS ROM. It's highly configurable, and I love the laziness of weather on my security screen without needing an additional lock screen.
SlimICS is a slightly-more configurable CyanogenMod that takes less space. What's not to love?
HebMIUI is great if you're a fan of MIUI ROMs. Since it's MIUI, not CM based, you'll need to do a full wipe between installing it and any of the other 3 I suggested, but it's one of the most updated ROMs for our phone.
Fah-Q CM9 is good if you're a fan of straight CyanogenMod, put out by this month's current active development team. The caveat here is that since it uses the Protean kernel (and HebMIUI might as well), there's no BLN control.
Personally, my daily driver with GB wandered between Barebones and Valhalla Black. For ICS, it always came back to AOKP. Right now, I've been running PACman JB for the last week or so as it implements portions of Paranoid Android/AOKP/CyanogenMod, but the lack of GPS in JB continually brings the ICS AOKP siren song back to my ears. We'll see where I fall back, but...
I do hate bln but the reason I disabled bln was because when I fixed the lights issues for the capacitive keys I eliminated any bln crap lol I might work on putting it back this week but not sure for now it doesn't work but then again the kernel fixes deep sleep and battery life so...

I recommed you to Heimdall one click and then put Barebone ROM. It will already give you a debloated rooted stock.
Leave Kies aside, waste of time.
So I finally rooted this phone, and I have ODIN and I also have this HEIMDALL along with an abundant amount of other files Ive been suggested to download yet I cant seem to change the rom still. I am on 2.2.1 any ideas suggestions or guidance would be helpful.
Odin and heimdall drivers may clash. I would uninstall all drivers (&kies) and stick with the heimdall if you're already having issues. Link in post above yours is good place to start.
Pc or Mac?
Find lumin30 or bhuvden one click guides. Follow and you shouldn't have any trouble.
Thanks for all the advice. It's exactly what I was looking for.
I am going to go with AOKP for now. I have been using GB with the heimdall kernel and it's the little things I miss, (like the ICS dialer, lock screen and status bar). I have tried to use alternatives like hololock etc and it just doesn't feel the same.
Cheers! Thanks for being a great community.
Ultragen is my fav ICS rom

I have been running AOKP on both my SGS4G as well as my wife's for 3 weeks now, and my phone is the most stable it has ever been. Very snappy and not a single crash. I did, as the poster references above, tweak my GPS file in my build.prop (it has been working great, much better than stock) and I would also recommend updating the modem on your phone to the LB6 padded modem. If you want an easy way to tweak your GPS, as well as install the AMR-WB codec for HD Voice, install Pimp my Rom from the Play Store. My wife likes it, and she is the first to complain about a slow phone or constant reboots. Was like getting a brand new phone. Team Acid did a bang up job. Great work.
