[Q] flash clockworkmod recovery only, please - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Can someone please tell me how to just flash the clockworkmod recovery on my galaxy s 4g? Ive been researching and reading for days and have tried several different methods from several different posts on several different forums and still cant get it to work. I just want to flash the recovery and then worry about a rom and other stuff later. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

You'll need to flash a custom kernel on your phone, are you on froyo (2.2.x) or gb (2.3.x)? You can check by going to Settings > about phone

I have gb 2.3.6

Look at the guide in the first link of my signature where it talks about SGS Kernel Flasher and custom kernels. You need to be rooted.

I got from your post. Thank you very much. Much appreciated.
Now im trying to download the Valhalla Black FB Edition (Build 3) .zip file but i cant get it to download. Ive tried several different links but it just wont download. Can u post a known working link please? Im sure its probably something with my computer, but i dont know what.

If it is your computer - a different link will not help. Try restarting, clearing caches and/or another browser. I just tried the link and it worked.

OK. When I get a chance I will try that. Thanks.

U were right. It was my computer. Got it now though. Thanks again for all your help.

why are you posting this in the development section?
there is a Q&A for this type of stuff.
ask a mod to move it.
now... that being said...
whats the problem.
the instructions can be a bit wierd but if you just follow them step by step and do exactly what it says then you will be fine.
but i too have had issues with installing CWM via rom manager and i do not suggest using it unless you have several hours to keep trying over and over until it works.
you would be better off flashing a rom via Odin3 that already has clockwork installed like the stock roms with CWM and then doing what ever you need to from there.
so... whats the problem?
i will do what i can where i can to help.

[Q] Need CWM for sgs4g 2.3.6 official.

Has anybody got a version of CWM that will work on the sgs4g? I accidentally flashed the galaxy s CWM from rom manager before finding this forum. Nothing has changed on the phone, except if i boot into CWM recovery i always get verification errors.
Also, are there any ROMs for the sgs4g that is running 2.3.6?
Thanks to anybody who can help.
Get rid of ROM Manager. I've read it doesn't work well on this phone. Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380331 for a 2.3.6 ROM with the latest CWM/root/voodoo lagfix.

You should try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422824
When it is time to choose a package pick the one that includes the beta 2d kernel from the Kj6 collection. Learning the one click method will also give you every thing you need should you make a mistake and need to recover from a soft brick

It's Heimdall installable, too, which is how I did it. I'm trying to leverage Heimdall more these days in an attempt to learn it better.

This may just be a noob question and I hope I'm posting in the right place. I'm running 2.3.6 as well and want to flash Valhalla Final onto my device. The instructions say you must have pre-installed kernel with clockwork recovery. Do I need to use Heimdall and load a kernel with clockwork recovery or is there another way to get the CWM? I am still learning the basics of all this stuff. Forgive my ignorance.

Since you're already on GB (2.3.6) you can do this, if you're not rooted follow:

Once you're rooted:

Thanks to everyone for their insight. My sgs4g is no more now. Luckily, I learned a lot about flashing with it before it died. Including unbricking. Still haven't gotten heimdall to work. But I think I have been trying to run the regular exe instead of the front end. We'll see. Hopefully I get paid this week to cut on the internet again. Killing me here.

Phone might be soft bricked. HELP PLEASE.

To start off I have a samsung galaxy s 4g for t-mobile obviously. I was on the 2.3.7 AOSPSTYLE X rom but being the dumbass I am I flashed RaverX3X's Kj6-Rom-CWM-Offical-GB-2.3.6.
Here is the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351783
Well I flashed it in the cwm recovery and afterwards I rebooted and I ended up with the phone stuck on the galaxy s 4g 'exclusively from T-Mobile' splash screen. I also ended up with the stock recovery because I did not read the description of this 'Rom'. Is there any way I could fix this? Please help.
as always.....odin is your friend....
also you could try to reflash it alot of times that works.... the problem i see is no one reads any more and so the forums keep gettin cluttered up with help me i dont feel like searching....tell me what to do.

I have heard of this odin but what is it? I've never used it in my life and I don't know how to even flash it. Can you give me details? Thanks!
Go to the second link in my signature and follow the guide and you will be good to go.

Please help! Sph-d710bst need root support

I want to start by saying i am very new to rooting, kernels, roms etc. so if someone could help me with some detailed steps i would greatly appreciate it. I recently purchased my sph d710bst (i know is pretty old) and have it currently rooted with AGATS fi27 kernel v0.6.8. Everything works great but I'm getting a little tired of the ROM. I've tried flashing new kernels through odin (pc) so i can get CM, AOKP or really any new kernel and ROM lol. But i haven't been able to successfully flash anything. After the kernel flash and loading the ROM through recovery i always get (status 7). On top of all that, nothing seems to be compatible with my device as I've found after purchasing the pro versions of everything ( mobile Odin, ROM manager, etc). Again any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

Im having the same problem, ive looked everwhere and can not find any roms or kernel for the SPH-d710bst epic 4g gs2. I have read that all kernels for the SPH-d710 should work how ever ive tryed a bunch and it bricks it. I did get a nightly cyanomod to work but it took a big of work and i didnt use a gapp so i didnt have the google stuff nor did i have data. I am waiting for a stable one to come out and ill use that, the gapp and jp's modems and it will work. You can try that with the nightly cyanomod, but make sure u get the gapp and jp modems for data, also u must have bussybox and it says cmm but agat worked for the flash then after the flash do a factorywipe wipchetch and dev and then reflash cmod then gapp the modem then boom u should be good. Ps if phone gets bricked just use jp's stock one click "wit data".Psps: If anyone has any other known mods kernel or roms please list them for us.
