First off, forgive me if this is in the wrong section, but I feel as though it is a dev question.
Move if necessary moderators!
I was just wondering if it is possible to somehow edit an existing Android app. The one I'm interested in editing is the TSF Shell 3d music widget. It's pretty sweet, but I find TSF Shell itself a little useless.
So, I've found that you can actually download and install the app without having TSF Shell itself. And it will open, but you can't actually put it down as a widget. And it has limited functionality.
Can the permissions just be changed so this can be installed as a regular widget?
Help would be awesome!

Development section is not meant for questions. Basics if you aren't releasing something (tutorials or "how to" go on a grey line) it shouldn't be in dev section. Moved to general.
Cheers

well, you can't really edit the source code unless you can find the, well, source code. you can get at some of the stuff in the apk like xml files and images, that is how many of the mods work, but you can't alter the actual java code. If the app is open source you could download that, edit it then rebuild it.
So long story short, no. I can't. Lol. Thanks so much for the info! I appreciate it!

Hi,
So the other day I was checking out a friend's Nexus S. When he locks it the screen turns off like an old school tv. Does anyone know how I could get that on my S4GS? Let me try and find a link on YouTube to show what I'm talking about.
Thanks
EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob4PN7s4WcY&feature=related
CM7 has that too. I believe it's in framework-res.apk, but I could be wrong. Try the UOT kitchen. Instructions are pretty easy, but be sure you pay close attention to them

Okay. Thanks. I'll look into it. :-D
EDIT: I looked into it and UOT Kitchen didn't have it. Any other suggestions?

If you look in the market for an app called "screen off and lock" it will give you different animations for you to choose that will enable it. But all the app does is to create a shortcut of the app on your home screen so you will have to tap it in order to show the animations. It doesnt work by pushing the physical lock button. I know this might not be what you're really looking for but its worth a try as a work around if you want some lock animations.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look at it. Something is better than nothing. LOL
There are applications that we can't change their shortcuts name when we create them.
I get a long name such as "shortcuts for blablabla". How can I change the long name to my favorite name?

Too this I would like to know. Yes?
Is it possible?
Can you provide a real life example? I believe I never saw anything like what you described, so you got my attention and curiosity. Lol.
I'll try to reproduce it here and see if I can find a solution.

As you can creature a widgets on the phone desktop you also can creature a shortcuts. There are applications that gave you the possibility to choose name for their shortcut (like astro file manager) and other applications set a long name like "shortcut of xda forum" (like xda application). I want to change this shortcut long name.

I use Sense and no, hold on to shortcut just let me to move the icon.
ADW Launcher lets you rename shortcuts after a long press.

I believe Sm!th figured it out. Every launcher should work differently, but for some reason I wrongly assumed you were on TW, sorry about that.

I would like to be able to put shortcuts on the home screen which correspond to different camera settings, for example one shortcut for macro mode and one for normal, OR, have different camera shortcuts which correspond to different folder locations, for example one labeled "family" and one labeled "photography". Anyone know how to do this?

Have you tried anycut
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
I just tried it, it doesnt seem to be able to do this.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I don't have anything to say on the matter, because I don't have an idea apart from the already mentioned AnyCut.
I would strongly advise you, however, to change the title to something more meaningful and descriptive-- like "Q: camera settings via shortcuts" or something similar, because a generic and utterly non-descriptive title like the one you used here will not entice the more knowledgeable forum dwellers to enter your thread to finally read what you''ve put up here. You'll have to wait for an eternity to get a more definite answer.
Just my $ 0.02.
What about where it says "make your own" I'm sure you can set defaults and values to the locations and actions you need. For that you need an experienced person, or you can always email the developer of the app.

If I am not mistaken, Camera 360 Ultimate has an option to create such shortcuts!
The goal is to be able to change small things in some apps.
For example, there is an app called SnapChat which allows you to send a picture for 3 seconds and then closes the picture. In this scenario, I would like to be able to edit the .apk file to allow to stay for 4 seconds. Would this kind of this be possible?
How so?
Um....you can do this within the app.....stock....

post this in android hacking. it is not a verizon gs3 topic. you'll find more support there.

most apps are customizable. there are threads over in android general/hacking specifically about this topic.

You can change alot of things in apps just by playing around with them. Using Apktool or another decompiling tool, you can change alot in the res/values folders Theres alot of stuff you can play around with in the various xml files

So you are saying I can't decompile or recompile apks on my phone? I have to use adb to push/pull and then use a program to decrypt the XML then I can change the values to what I want?

You're gonna have to adb push/pull unless you build your own ROM.
You can get apktool from here: https://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/

You can swap out images but you definitely can't change app settings like animations and such without the right tools and procedures.

OK. I don't want yo change animations just yet. I want to edit app icon colors widget colors. I pretty much want to theme everything.

use 7zip on your computer to swap out png's. change app's name from whatever.apk to whatever.zip then move it to your computer using 7zip open the archive. don't extract or unzip. navigate to res folder and open it. find the png files you want to change and insert your png files you want. make sure they are the correct size, in the correct format (png) and are named correctly. exactly as they are in the zip file. then close the zip transfer it back to your phone and rename back to whatever.apk i do suggest doing some more research before doing this. there are a lot of threads dedicated just for this. use the search engine at the top of the page. XDA provides it for this exact reason.
3.1 BETA OUT NOW
This is my first app, so lots of *constructive* feedback would be nice.
It's nothing special (I did it on MIT AppInventor like the noob who knows no java that I am)
Ever leave somewhere and forget how to get back?
Problem = Solved.
Simply press the button and it will remember your "Island Location" -- for you Lost fans --which you can name.
The rest is pretty self explanatory.
Screenshots in attachments
CHANGELOG
// What's new in 3.1
-- Added 2 customizeable saved locations
-- Fixed buttons getting cut off
// What's new in 2.1
-- Settings bugs hopefully fixed -- I'm currently testing it
*Changng to Lost background will apply after app is closed and reopened
// What's new in 2.0
-- Settings -- Change the look of the main screen
MORE SETTINGS TO COME -- just a trial run right now
// Planned changes for next version
-- Whatever I can think of. Any suggestions?
P.S. If you want an older version just pm me I'll get it for you
Has anyone used this app? Really looking for some feedback...
I downloaded your app, and you have a good idea and it is functional, although obviously limited in design and some functionality due to the lack of raw java. I also think it would be nice to have some settings of some sort, if it's possible to add those with the program you used to create it

I'm working on adding settings now. I plan to make the background and fonts changeable because I know I can easily do that. If you have any other settings ideas I can give them a shot.
I'm also looking to make the app able to remember multiple locations.
Thanks for the feedback.
Great idea! You should add a list of remembered places so one can chose where to go back to.

Working on adding multiple locations now. Any preference on how that works? Like pick three to save? Remember last three saved?
Does your app do something that using Google Maps w/ starred locations doesn't do?
If I go somewhere and think I might be so unfamiliar with the area that I might not be able to locate my car, I star the location I've parked at then use that when I leave wherever I went to easily find my spot.
It kind of sounds like your app does this too, but as its only feature?

Probably not. The only difference I imagine is that the app does it just by pushing buttons. It actually uses Google maps for directions. Sorry if that's disappointing for you haha
3.1 is up. This mostly a bump post haha. Would love to get some feedback
