So we all know how great the camera is on this phone... However I recently went to a "rave" and was taking some video. I noticed that whenever a light would pass the lense the auto focus would try and do its thing and kept trying. Is there a way to turn autofocus off or adjust something to have this not happen??

Cant turn off Auto Focus, but what you can do is tap the screen in a spot you want to focus on, and it will re-focus on that spot.
But here's the trick. When its dark this is especially important. Dont tap on a spot to focus that has all dark colors, your best bet is to tab a spot where two very different colors come togeteher. For example. If somebody is wearing a striped shirt, say black and white stripes. As long as they arent running by or anything drastic like that, their shirt would be a good place to tap to focus, because the camera has the ability to focus until the connecting points (where the white meets the black) is sharp and crisp, not blurry. If you tap on a light, or on somebodies blue pants or white shirt, or tap on a wall or something where in the little box that comes up to focus, if there's no drastic range of colors, it wont focus very well. Look at the picture below:

The top right area is all black, tapping there, the camera has nothing to focus on. It needs to see the edge of something, make it blurry, then adjust until its crisp and clear. As its moving through its focus range, it will see those areas getting clearer and sharper, but once it starts getting blurry again, it knows its past the sweet spot and goes back to it.
Right in the middle of the picture is some person wearing glasses with their hands up and they are lit up like a light is shining on them. Tapping on this persons face where the glasses are is a prime spot, because there's a clear difference between the black glasses and the pink skin, in other words, there's a high contrast where as the blonde girl below her who's wearing a dark colored jacket, tapping on her chest where there's a flap of some sort hanging down, there's very low contrast, because the color of the flap and the color of the jacket are the same, its hard for a computer/phone to distinguish the difference on low contrast targets. The higher the contrast, the quicker and better the focus will be. Best spots to tap on are the lines that intersect the contrasting colors, such as the edge of the glasses where the color of the image changes from black (glasses) to pink (face).
I noticed this too. Tested out the video at a few raves and I constantly had to refocus. My Galaxy Note kept the focus without any issues. But this takes better stills and has the battery I need for 8-12 hours of raving.
Side note: Can't wait for Electric Daisy Carnival this year! 300,000 people and 118 DJs last I checked. I'll be out of control all 3 days.

I noticed it this weekend at a music festival. Every time a light hit it (or strobe lights went off) the phone lost focus and had to refocus. My Atrix was amazing at low light electronic festival videos, so it may be going with me to EDC while my One X stays at home.
Wish there was a solution.

I have read in a few place that the Sprint cam is better because ATT added some kinda film over the lense to protect it and its yellows our pics.
Here is a picture with stock settings from the Fuze.

Now if you go to the setting menu, chage the White Balance of of Auto and put it to the light bulb. Now you get a picture that looks like this.
I thought it would be cool to add some pictures from other sources I think the Cam on the Touch Pro (Fuze) is amazing.
Here is an 8.1 Megapixel Digital Cam.
Here is a pic from my Cingular 2125 (Tornado maybe?)
Here is a picture from my ATT 8525 (Hermes) 2.0MP.
I just figured this out as well. I know on my Tilt and my Vogue (with Sprint), I had to put it on the moon to get rid of that yellow tint.
I went through and tried all the settings and I think the light bulb one is the best.
EDIT: I think someone should add this to the WIKI.
Agree that the camera on the fuze is really good. I took my Kaiser to SEMA a few weeks ago and that did pretty well, but the fuze camera seems far superior.
I usually just run everything through photoshop, but I've been using photoshop for almost 10 years. I did notice the response of the Fuze camera is MUCH improved over the Tilt camera.
Yeah I got mine also on light bulb. I remember the Tilt had the same problem too.
As always, these HTC cams are not "one setting > all". The reason there are different options is because some are better for different lighting.
Auto stinks, I'll agree with you on that. For standard incandescent lighted indoor subjects, the light bulb would be the correct option (as you have stated noticed here). However, in other indoor-situations as well as larger lit areas the fluorescent (looks like a rectangle with light beams) is a better choice. I found that outdoors, the light bulb option is worse than any of the others.
In fact, my personal experience (at least with my current phone, HTC Titan 2mpix) is best results are acheived with the flourescent setting, but first aim the camera at a bright light source (sun, light bulb, etc) so it automatically lowers the auto image gain and give you more realistic color.
Here's a pic I took near Boston using this method:
Now, I know the image isn't the sharpest, but that's a function of the titan camera quality. I'm talking about the color balance. Its damned near perfect. You can probably get the same results with the fuze.
Thanks for the tip!
I'm having an issue where even the slightest movement creates a blurry picture like the camera is on nightshot (shutter open longer). Is there a way to fix that?
Phone cameras are usually horrible i never bothered with them. But my digi cam just died and i was looking for another when i decided to try the fuze cam. WOW, it is not bad at all, so much so i am deciding if i even really need to buy another digi cam.
Of course a 10mp sounds great, but without spending a dime i can have near perfect 3mp photos
Seen some samples online. Anyone on here have any opinions on night shots with this phone since flash is absent? Does the "night mode" seem to help make the pictures barable...or perphaps does that do better justice than an LED flash would?
I tried "night mode" in my den yesterday with the tv on and just sunlight coming through the shades, it was worthless. The only thing that showed up on the picture was the tv screen while the rest of the picture was black.
Whats your opinon on the camera over-all. I just wish it had flash!

Yes, I wish it had a flash too. Overall I think the camera takes solid pictures, just has to be enough light. Its still just a cellphone camera, though, so dont get rid of your regular digital camera. But in a pinch it takes usable pics. It's better than the 2MP cam on my old iphone.
From pics that I've seen I think the iphone4 camera is the best out there, it has the largest opening that allows the most light in to the sensor. The Droid X also has a great cam, but I think the Galaxy S phones are just behind that one. So its a top 3 cell cam. This, of course, is just my honest opinion.
thanks
I have the samsung mythic now (touch screen feature phone) that has flash and it sometimes helps sometimes doesn't. Of course it's an LED flash so sometimes it makes the object just a big blob of light.

I think phones with LED Flashes / Xenon flashes are overrated. More often then not they lend to washing out the picture completely with a white shade over everything. Only thing I ever used my fuze flash for is a flashlight.
i think if you had a iphone before(not saying you did) those people might be able to live but people who didnt maybe not so much

What menu do you use to find night mode? I've browsed through all the menus on the camera, and none were titled 'night mode'

The TV might have been too bright, throwing off the light ratios. I would imagine that "night mode" just auto-magically adjusts the exposure based on an average of the light recorded. Try a picture in the same settings without the TV screen in the picture and see if it improves...
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for the pics!! Night mode does seem to do pretty good!
I've noticed that when using my Skyrocket camera indoors, especially during the day, that there seems to be a slightly reddish hue around the center of the photo. This is noticeable in the display while I'm viewing the scene, and in the final photo. I am using auto white balance. I also notice that when I view a scene under incandescent lights using auto or incandescent w/b, the center has a greenish tint while the surrounding area is slightly reddish.
The following photo of the off white wall was taken in the early afternoon with ambient daylight. I was wondering if others with a Skyrocket have noticed the same thing. I just want to try to figure out if this is a normal condition with this phone before I go back to the AT&T store to demand an exchange. Thanks.

That wasn't Kool-Aid, that was wine. Lol.
After doing some experimentation, I have discovered that the light pollution from my LCD TV and my PC monitor in a room with ambient daylight seems to be the culprit here. I am somewhat of a photography buff and understand the effect of different types of light on digital photography, so I tried turning my monitor and TV off, and the reddish tint disappeared. My real cameras don't have this problem, but I guess the camera on this phone isn't quite up to the task of properly adjusting to different light sources at the same time. Anyway, I'll just have to be aware of this whenever I take photos indoors.
I'm still interested in hearing about your results, though. Thanks.
Oops, spoke too soon. I tried it again this morning and got the same red splotch. Maybe the lighting was different earlier. Anyway, I did some more searching leaving "Skyrocket" out and came up with several threads about this in the Galaxy S2, and other forums. Seems to be a common problem with the white balance in a lot of phone cameras, so I guess I'll just live with it.
reddish hue in middle of scene in camera
Sorry to bring up an old post, but I recently purchsed this S2 Skyrocket and have seen the same issues. I was about to call AT&T for an exchange, but could I be safe to say, i just need to adjust white balance?
There has been no other replies so either you and I are the only ones and need an exchange or others are just not replying.
Hope others can chime in.
Thanks!
All this time I was under the impression that it does work, I mean when you touch the screen it moves the brackets, turns them green and appears to refocus.
I did a very simple test and it seems it's not doing anything. I placed two objects, one in front of the other at different distances from the camera. The result is wherever you touch the screen, trying to focus on the object in the background, it always focuses on the foreground object.
Is this something you can confirm? Is it something rom related or is it a hardware issue?

Yes, it works. IIRC, you need a ROM that supports it to enable touch to focus.
Here's a pic I took now:
Pretty much just helps what it should focus on than focusing on the item that's in the middle. Since you have such limited control of the camera lens, you obviously won't get much control on the depth of field like what you would see with SLR's
That's great and all but in both of those shots the foreground is in focus, which is what I always get. But say I wanted to focus on the little red car in the background (2nd picture) it could never focus.
Can you take the same picture where that red car is in focus and the bottle (?) is out of focus?

It works when I am focusing on the background and not foreground like what you were asking for. However I dont have time now to search for a picture as an example.

I agree with the OP, I have placed an object about 5cm from the camera and have the background at about half a meter away. Without moving the camera, I cannot refocus on the foreground object and background object.
The above examples seem to prove otherwise but it would be more evident if each shot was taken at the EXACT angle and showing different focus.
For now, touch to focus seems to act has normal focus ...

Yeah... for me it only ever focuses on the object in front...

Can any other members confirm if Touch to Focus is working?
I've currently tested on my ROM (CM9 v3.4).
Yeah for some odd reason, my camera will not even focus..
Hello everyone,
Today i noticed that when bright light falls(like the one in the shopping mall) on my gear s3, it shows a small brown patch on the display at an angle.
I don't know if this is the design or i have got an orange.
Please guys can anyone who owns this watch confirm this? Flashing a bright light like phone camera light in a little dark(lightly lit) room and titling the watch at angles will start to show a brown color small box like rectangular patch on the screen of the watch.

I found the answer-- before answering i have tell few things :
I had given my watch before to Samsung service centre for the rattling bezel issue, they fixed the problem by changing the full watch expect the bottom panel containing the serial number which was retained, during this process i suspect they have missed some seal or packing where the bottom heart rate sensor is located.
Now when a bright light falls on the display the light passes through ( i observe there is a small transparent opening in the bottom panel causing the issue maybe) making the display show a perfect rectangular brown patch as the light is partially passing through thin display(this is similar like in MacBook pro laptop wherein if you pass a bright light from outside where apple logo is located a white apple shaped patch is produced).
Taking the watch to service centre and will see what they will say.
Also to inform you service centre people are unprofessional and have put few scratches on the back panel of the watch the first time i had given.
So many problems I am facing with this watch one after other next time i am thinking of going with apple and will change my complete ecosystem.
I have got the small brown rectangular patch on my screen as well. I did shine the bright light and it was distinct.
It's an ambient light sensor for adjusting the screen's brightness automatically. Just be glad that it's mostly hidden underneath the screen rather than in some hideous notch or flat tire near the edge.
