I just started receiving this error on my GSM Samsung GNex when attempting to update the hosts file. "Hit Fatal Error, this copy of Adfree is too old." In searching older xda threads, a workaround was found back then by setting the device's date back to 2010. Tried this method and now AF updates normally. Set back to 2012... broken again. Mid last year, a fix was released by the developers and the problem seemed to be addressed. Although this phone is only a week old (and the app), I uninstalled and re-installed via Market. Thought it might be related to su, but no issues with other programs requiring root, ie. TB, RE, etc. Is this likely a problem with my configuration, or the app? Thanks.
I got the same problem which is started from 20May2012.
Use Adaway instead, it's a better app anyway
I'll give Adaway a whirl. Thanks for the tip.
Same problem with adfree so i installed adaway. Looks good, thank you for the tip.

The ad blocking lists in rom toolbox are not updated as regularly as the ones in adaway...something to consider...I still use it for it's other features but also run adaway.

There is an update today.
And after, Addfree works fine.

I switch to AdAway a couple weeks back. I think its better. It lists which hosts files it uses and allows you to add your own hosts file. AdFree is anyone's guess what source it uses for its hosts file.

Figured it out...There is a new version of Adfree with a new market link. You have to uninstall v.0.8.44 and install this one (v.0.8.45). Don't know why this was done, but it works for me.
I got it to work by doing the following:
1. Go to settings and change your year to 2009
2. Open the app and boot normally
3. It should work now
4. After updated the host file, change the year back to 2012!

Hi folks,
I'm just wondering of there's a reason why I can't access some apps I was able to find before in the market?
Quick Settings, Launcherpro beta, Adw launcher, Zeam, etc, are nowhere to be find now...
I've got some of them on my download page on the market app and I also wonder if I can still access the updates.

Thanks for the reply. Ill try to find out.
Maybe your market access keys are incorrect because you have installed a custom rom? For example, test versions from Huawei have test keys installed that will not list all applications. You need to use proper release keys provided by carrier.
Thanks speckles, you point a different possible problem. Even if I don't have a custom rom: just a Milestone 2.1 rooted.

Well, I think that I have the proper one for I didn't changed it. Can you tell me how can I check this? (I've got still a lot to learn.)
I have been reading a little on old and similar problems, often related issues with protected app, like paid/protected app on rooted phones - and regardless to the models, countries, carriers, and maybe even to the versions.
I am not sure to be concerned, I mean it's a bit different in my case. For instance, I have Tapatalk pro installed and which is protected but I can still find it on the market (I mean outside of the download tab).
So far, my problem only concerns some free apps.
There were from long time app that I wasn't able to find on the market (like TV.com), by example when using appbrain. But now, that's the first time I can't find apps I had already downloaded and that I've got installed. (I spotted the problem while recommending apps to a friend who's got a Desire since a few days. He was himself unable to find them, like Quick settings.)
Edit --
Scanning a barcode pointing on the apps in the market do not work as well.
Some solutions points to the build.prop:
Root your phone and modify your /system/build.prop with the fingerprint of a build that actually works. Then clear all data and cache from the market and google apps, reboot, set your clock to 23:59 and wait 5 minutes to force a refresh of the data before starting the Market app. You'll have to supply your Google account details again but this should work around the problem.

Useful as well:
From MasDroid, on XDA -14th April 2010, 08:59 PM
I've read about this issue which was recently explained by a developer of XDA (nprussell).
Apparently everyone is in the same boat so to speak. He states that many "protected" apps are missing from the market. There are generally two reasons why apps will be missing from the market:
When a new ROM or handset is released, the manufacturer (i.e. HTC), sends the build to Google for verification, which includes a 'Fingerprint' (a unique line of text which governs its market access) in one of the build files. Generally, it states the name of the phone and Android version in the fingerprint. With Root & System write access, this fingerprint can be changed, but although it's been claimed that the Desire has recently been Rooted, we still don't have confirmation from any developer of it being able to gain System write access.
Only until Google approve the build, then fingerprint will be added to their allowed database to view these protected apps on the market.
The other cause for apps missing from the market in builds is because of permissions of certain apps. For example, the barcode scanner app requires permissions to use the camera/auto focus. They are NOT protected apps. If the XML permission files are missing from system/etc/permissions, then Google Market will simply block these apps from showing.
HTC need to chase Google up on this and Google need to activate the Fingerprint.

Edit 2 --
I have tried to replace my build.prop (using one from a Telus Milestone) but nothing has changed. Maybe I need to erase the market's data as told in the second quote but I'm not sure to know how to do it.
I have the same problem. (Htc desire Vodafone/the Netherlands/original ROM) There was an OTA update few days a go. After that most of the installed apps couldn't be found. It seems that this affected a lot of people...check the comments on launcherpro an adw launcher websites

If you have edited your build.props, then it can take upto 24 hours for them to be published to the market. So wait a few days.
If it still doesn't work, try Eris Market Fix after doing a nandroid backup. Again, you may have to wait about 24 hours before noticing any changes.
I think i have same problem here. Finland/HTC Desire/Stock ROM.
There should be LauncherPro in market right? Had to dl new one from LP's site.
I have got everything back and I'm still using the same build.prop. So I believe that the market had been fixed.
Hope it's the same for you!
So on my dad's droid 1, rooted, he had Adfree installed and working just fine. He was using an application the was ad supported then set his phone down and 2 mins later picked it up opened the same applies and there were ads on his screen. He didn't disable anything in that time. Adfree says there's a hosts update but will not longer download or block ads. Prior to this he had installed autokiller memory optimizer. We thought it was that, so we uninstalled it and adfree is still not working. Cleared cache and data for adfree, tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still no go. I'm at a loss. Any help is appreciated.

Adfree works by blocking known advertisement addresses via the HOSTS file. If an app is simply pulling advertisements from somewhere not specifically listed to be blocked in the HOSTS file, the advertisements will be shown as usual. It is somewhat of a cat and mouse game to constantly keep up to date on where advertisements are coming from, to then block them. Nothing is awry with the phone, it is completely normal.
As for Adfree not downloading the latest HOSTS file update (I believe that's what you said), could be numerous things. Check and make sure it is still being allowed Superuser permission.

I'm jkbhs03's dad and it's my phone that's having the problem. Maybe I can explain a little clearer than my son did. Anyway, I've had Adfree working on my Droid 1 for months. This afternoon I downloaded Autokiller Memory Optimizer on my phone to see if it would speed it up a little. That's when I noticed my ads returned. I opened Adfree and it said an update was available for new hostnames. After selecting "download & install hosts", Adfree stays stuck on "connecting...". I assumed Autokiller Memory Optimizer had something to do with it, so I uninstalled it from my phone. I still had the same problem with Adfree. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adfree, but I still have the same problem. Superuser has granted Adfree permission and I can't figure out what went wrong or how to fix it. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try Uninstalling Ad Free, then re-installing it?
I had this same problem, but a little toggle on Adfree made it work for me.
On mine this is what it looks like..
After you open your app, I should check the 2nd option (Use 127.0.0.1) and at the end the symlink from data/data/hosts check that as well.
thats whats been working for me, if it doesn't work i'll try to help you out more.
Tried both of those and still no luck.

Seems to be fixed just now.
It was looping like 10 minutes yesterday, now it takes 3 minutes on that screen and it shows "Update Successful".
Tried it again this morning, and Adfree updated in about a minute or so. Ads are gone again. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Same, back working again as well.
Should add that the 'Droid Overclock' app provides a minimal ad-blocking ability as well which can work in a pinch while waiting on Adfree to update. It isn't nearly as flexible and the app does have a minimal cost, but thought I would mention it.
Thanks all!

Can anyone help me get this working please?
i have installed ..granted superuser..checked 2nd option and checked symlink option ......it says connecting and please wait while your hosts file is updated......this just says connecting and i give up after leaving it for 10 minutes each time
if i just check the box - 127.0.0.1
i just get this
failed to replace your hosts file error message
any help appreciated
tried to add some screen shots from my phone but wont allow me as im a new member
im having adfree problems also. im running the salvage 9.5 rom and adfree was working til it recently updated. it says there are new host but when i update i get this error "java.io.EOFException". anyone know what to do?
I reposted this from the "General" forum
Every since I upgraded to AdFree 0.8.41, it is not working. I tried rebooting my phone (as the app states after upgrade), uninstalled, reinstalled AdFree, and rebooted, no help. Updated again after re installation, then tried rebooting again and no help.
This app worked after I initially installed it.
The host file (\system\etc\host) looked the same throughout the process. I thought about deleting my host file, then uninstalling and reinstalling AdFree, but wasn't sure if that was a good idea.
Is there something I need to do after the update to get it to work?
I have a rooted Bionic with stock ROM.
Thank you,
Tony
Try Ad Away. It's better, in my opinion.
There are rumors that AdFree or whatever it's called is removing certain sites from the hosts file it creates. The sites that are removed of course have something to do with getting paid, if you know what I mean.
Of course this is purely rumor, but trying a different app might be worth a shot.
For apps that only use internet access for ads, like games, use Droidwall to block them from connecting completely.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
I'll vouch for Ad Away, haven't tried DroidWall yet though...probably give it a try now ^^
Any one know if any of the previous ad blockers will eventually work on 4.4. Just tried the latest version of adaway and I'm receiving an error. Just wondering if these apps will be supported any more. I read somewhere Google was cracking down on adblockers. But God knows I hate seeing ads in apps that don't offer a paid version that's ad free. Thanks.
Don't know if this is supposed to be in Q&A. Thought if there was an apk out there that worked it could be placed here.

Adblock plus. No problem.
Not working here
Adblock also not working on my Nexus 5. So far I've tried adaway and adfree and I can still see ads in chrome. Gained root using cf-auto-root.
Just succeeded in applying the host file.
Have tried before and failed, so I had given up.
But gave it a try more, and now it works.
Here's how you get it working:
1. Start the app and give root access, download and apply hosts file, this will fail.
2. Exit the app, force close it, erase data.
3. Open the app and run it again.
4. Profit.

I'm seeing ads on this page too so i guess Adblock Plus isn't working either. Perhaps the apps just need updates to work with Kitkat or maybe Google have found a way to stop the blockers from working somehow? I've only tried on Chrome so far as it seems to be the only Browser that's working properly on our phones.
Adaway works for me, sometimes doesn't enable hosts on the first try but just keep trying

For anyone seeing ads on Chrome, that's because you are using Google's Data Compression Proxy.
You can disable it by going to "Settings -> Bandwidth management -> Reduce data usage" and turning it off.
This is probably a stupid question but...
I've been trying for the past 3 days to download this app from the Google play store, but it says it's incompatible with my device (Xperia SP).
I've used Market Helper and it didn't work.
I've tried editing my build.prop and it bricked my phone (lol) I recovered it but lost all my contacts
Anyway, I've resorted to sideloading it. The problem is, since I've installed it I'm getting push ad notifications and popups on my home screen, browser etc.
So, is there anything I can download to stop the adware or somehow remove the adware without uninstalling said app?
Thanks

That makes no sense. What do you mean by removing that without uninstalling ? Your statement is self contradictory.
If you are rooted you can freeze that app using Titanium Backup.
Why don't you try AdAway ?

You are welcome.AdWare is supposed to block and remove ads and notifications on your phone. If you are still getting ads or the app itself is putting ads and notifications then it's not serving the purpose either it's not working or malfunctioning (broken codes).
Is that an Ad-supported app ?If it is,then that's not an issue.AdAway will block those ads.
