Does selecting "Wipe Data" from Recovery delete/erase everything on the external sd card?
If so, is there any way to recover it?
Lesson learned: everything that was on that external sd card after the reboot is now gone Won't be doing that again. Should've known better
but why did it keep the movie files that i had on there and other .zip files i had downloaded? anything info would help or at least reassure me that it is suppose to happen. thanks

So I'm about to install Tiamat's new ROM (I really want the init.d scripting functionality, plus it can't hurt to get up-to-date) but I can't remember if wiping my user data wipes out the /sdcard/ mount on my xoom. I've got 15gbs in there in all kinds of random stuff and I'd rather not wipe it if I don't have to.
What I THINK is that the Dalvik/Cache/User data wipe that I do before I install the ROM will do what it would on my phone - simply wipe everything that isn't on the /sdcard/ partition. Is this correct? I sure hope so.
Yes, that is correct. It won't touch your SD card.
Just to be certain...
Ok, but to be clear, I don't actually HAVE an sdcard, just the bigass bit of internal memory mounted AS /sdcard/. It won't mess with that right?

If you are asking about the user data wipe you will have to do I order to flash thetiamat rom,
ummm yes, it will wipe that (internal storage) but not wipe your external/removable sdcard.
Damn. Ok, well, I'll just back all of that up to the computer then. It'll take a while.
You need an sdcard to install the rom though.

Nope
Ok, so, like I thought, the "wipe data/factory reset" option in ClockWorkMod Recovery does NOT format the /sdcard/ partition, even though it is actually physically located on the internal storage.
Because of this I was also able to use the internal storage to store the tiamat*.zip rom file and flash from the internal storage mapped to /sdcard/. I'm now going to attempt to restore all of my settings and apps via Titanium Backup.
Thanks anyway guys. You did inspire me to do a full backup of my /sdcard/ partition onto my computer at least.
Sorry guys. I was way off. I was even smug about it. Well, as it turns out, you do need an SD card. Check out my post here to see what happened (a lot of dumb bad stuff): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152121
SO, i'm kinda new to flashing roms onto android, but I followed guides and might have run into a problem. I flashed clockwork recovery mod onto my internal sd, and when i try to install cyanogenmod, clockwork defaults to my internal sd. As far as I can tell, I have to wipe that to install. Is clockwork being on my internal sd a problem? And if so, how would i go about fixing that.
Thanks in advance for any feedback, and sorry if this has been posted somewhere else.
It's not ON your internal sdcard. It reads files FROM your internal sdcard. Recovery will remain on your phone no matter what you do to your sdcard. So flash away.
Ever since I first got this phone, I have been unable to detect/mount the SD card in CWM, and under "Storage" in "Settings."
Oddly, I have no issues accessing "sdcard" in the My Files folder, or in Root Explorer.
Whenever I flash a ROM, I have to select "choose zip from internal" instead of "choose zip from sd card."
I have no issues with doing this, however the reason I think that I should fix this is because I keep having problems with Market FC's and "phone is not compatible" error messages when trying to get apps from the market. Also, I am unable to use Nandroid in CWM because of this.
I have followed the instructions here except I obviously was unable to format the SD card.
Thanks for any help!
I got help in another thread and fixed my Market compatibility problems.

Thanks to Schwaxdoc for that.
So no more issues with the market anymore. I'm still interested seeing if there's anything I can do about my sd card not mounting.
I've had the same issue, ROM Manager tells me that the SD card needs to be mounted when it already shows as mounted in settings OR it says "unavailable" in the space for both internal and external.
I can fix it by removing the SD card, turning off the phone, inserting the SD card, and turning the phone back on.
It almost always reoccurs every time I flash a new ROM.
I'm having the same problem, and I've tried to use seanscreamz fix in the link you posted but that didn't work (but, like you said, since I can't mount the sd card I can't format it ).
Does anyone have another solution? Even after going back to stock, wiping data, cache, system etc. nothing seems to work. I can't use ROM Manager, can't restore nandroid backups, can't mount the damn sd card!
I've attached a picture of the Storage display if it helps (USB Storage appears to be my sd card and the sd card is 0 out of 0).
Woo hooo!!! Fixed it. I can now run Nandroid backups and presumably restore them.
I'm not sure what worked, but I think it was flashing the latest CWM from ROM Manager. The Odin-flashable cwm I had didn't have the options for "Backup to Internal SD Card", "Advanced Restore", etc.
Other things that may have helped:
--Tried seanzscreams repair here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21424179&postcount=1 (but obviously couldn't format the SD Card that I couldn't mount).
--Flashed back to stock, wiped data/cache in 3e recovery.
--Rooted, then clean install of Alien 5.5 rom using DARKSIDE SUPER WIPE first (new! found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487706)
But I'm pretty sure that flashing the latest CWM from ROM Manager was what fixed it.
Do not do a factory reset with this ROM, unless you want to lose all the data on your SD card.
Nice...
I wouldn't really go blaming them right away. Did you select the factory reset option from the rom itself or from in recovery? Its never a good idea to select factory reset or upgrade from with in the rom if you are rooted. It will just mess everything up. Most sense roms you flash will have those options, just do not use them.
Always do your wiping and resets from with in recovery before flashing a new rom.
If you lost everything on your SD card and haven't done anything else to it yet, look online for some programs that will help you recovery your lost data. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't.
"I love my Springfield XD"
Most likely this happened because that ROM recognizes the sd card as an internal storage and not as an external sd card. So a factory reset would erase the internal storage. Something to remember on those phones that have 16/32GB of storage built in.
Alrighty
Noted. Thanks Will notify my phonemates
I would like to start over and reinstall CleanROM 4.5 on my phone, and I thought it would be good to also format the SD card while I'm at it so that everything is clean. I've got a lot of junk in there from various ROMs and would just like to start fresh. What is the best way to do this?
Should I just do "Erase phone storage" from the settings menu of the ROM? Or maybe "Factory data reset"? Or should I be doing this from TWRP? What I don't want is to end up with a brick. I need to be able to transfer the CleanROM zip back over to the phone once it erases the SD card. Whats the best way to do this?
Erase phone storage does what you want. I've had bad luck with messing with phone storage in twrp. It rendered my sd card unreadable once.
Alright, that's good to know. Do you know what the difference between "erase phone storage" and "factory data reset" are? Just curious.
Erase phone storage seemed to do the trick. Thanks gunny.
Factory reset wipes the /data directory which is where user installed apps are stored. System wipe from twrp wipes /system also which is where the rom itself is stored.

Factory Reset just resets the Os like you're starting from the scratch without touching your sd card data.
Erase phone storage wipes the data from your sd card ie. Photo's, music, and anything else you've put on there.
