[Q] non-stock microUSB cable is "touchy"? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So, I've noticed that if I use a microUSB cable other than the one that comes with the Skyrocket (it's got a glossy black plug with a weird flared shape on the end facing the rest of the cable), I am able to push down (towards the back) on the plug whilst it's connected to the phone, and the phone stops charging. After letting go of the plug, it starts charging again. If I use the cable that came with my phone, I don't have this problem. I think it may have to do with the fact that the plug that comes with the Skyrocket has a plug that's about 1/8" shorter. Has anyone noticed this happening to their phones as well, or have I already broken my barely 3-month-old phone?

Just buy a legit cord from eBay there like 6 bucks and im sorry but questions should be in Q&A not general talk
Edit: buy legit I meant OEM ha they are on eBay uber cheap the other cables sometimes only work for charging and not data transfer

Wrong section and use an OEM cord

[Q] Broken Micro USB Port

Okay so my usb port has been a bit annoying the past week - where i had to vigorously wiggle the cable to get it to charge or to sync (and even when it did decide to connect to the computer, it would chop out eventually)
But now it's no longer charging or being recognized by my comp
It's strange because the headphone adapter was working fine, and so was the usb host, but it just wont charge anymore - I effectively now have a dead TG01
Currently, i'll get the orange light, telling me it's charging, but when i try to power on, nothing happens...
So i'm thinking a new USB port which is where I need some help: I'm not sure on what part to get
But maybe This is the one? Comparing the images with the ones found on the net of the TG01 (Yep - I still haven't got mine open yet)
But yeah, just a heads up on whether you think it would work would be epic, or whether you think i should just try a different battery/charger/throw it away (Although i'm almost certain it's the port, as it was working intermitently before - it's now gone altogether)
are u using only usb to charging or an wall charger?

Wall charger, but i tried USB, and still no luck
It just wont charge at all, regardless of the orange light when plugged in now that it's off (though i wouldn't get it when the phone did still have charge left and was therefore still switched on...)
BUMP: Any ideas you clever people? Just some guidance would be nice...
I'm still without my beloved TG01, I'm having to use a **** old Samsung G600
I do have some problems of my own with my USB cable. I believe the problems are due to the cable, though. The wall charger works fine. The USB cable that I use, has to stay somehow "forced"... imagine having the cell laying face up on a desk. The USB cable gets out and is forced by a small pen that stays right near the cellphone, to have a 30% slope upwards, so pushing a bit the cable onto the upper part of the USB port. I do know that you are telling us a different issue, however, maybe this way you could check whether it's just a broken connection and not a completely dead port.
No, this sounds like the exact issue i had...
It was like this with the Charger and USB - where i had to force it to be recognised or charged, and it would still cut out after a while - and wiggling it or knocking it wouldn't actually affect it, it would be of it's own accordance...
But it was strange because the headphone adapter worked fine...
Nothing happens at all now though
Are you try: Settings- Connections- USB to PC- unmark Enable advanced network functionality
I can't turn the phone on because it wont charge, so it's not that
Battery may be defective. Try with any 5V charger, connect directly to battery pin in 10 min
Hi
It vaguely remembers me of something I read on the forum about different micro usb (explaining my different cables do not connect just the same, some easy, some bit forced); I think there also was a drawing. (but I don't have time to search for the exact thread; it was not the "solving usb port mistery one))
Maybe your earphone adaptator don't have exactly the same as your charger? And if it is not battery trouble, find a charger with the "very right" micro usb plug?
Thank you both so much for your response:
I understand why you say it could be the battery problem with the charger - but it doesn't explain the intermittent connection with my computer when using the USB cable. Which is convincing myslef more and more that it's a port problem
One solution for now would be to buy one of these cheap external battery chargers from eBay, but it would mean i still wouldn't be able to use sync using the USB cable and i'm a bit conscious on whether the charger is safe and wont fry my battery
Which is why i'm leaning towards having a stab at reparing it myself
It'd solve the issue directly and it'd be a safer and more secure solution too... (the external charger would have to be ordered in from Hong Kong eBay)
I'm having what seem to be exactly the same problems. I have used 2 x usb based chargers on it - and neither work (whereas they had been working for the past 6 months). Got a mains charger last week - was working for a while - but as of right now, no longer works.
I'm not sure what else to do. I will try later to use the other adapter I have for connection to usb keyboard. The strange thing is - this will probably work but charging won't!
So....is it the micro usb port that's broken? (strange if it is but still works for data)
OR
could it be the battery?

Infuse picky about cables.

So turns out I didn't ship this week... -_- Just what I've come to expect from the military lol. But on to my thread! Is it just me, or do any of you guys ever have issues with certain USB cables? My phone seems extremely picky about which ones work and whatnot. I've tried an LG one for a Sprint Optimus S, borrowed from my sister to charge and it wouldn't charge, tried an HTC from my girlfriend's Inspire, and I also tried an AT&T generic cable. The last two cables will charge, but no data will work, and I know there's nothing wrong with them because they all work with other people. So far I've only had luck with the Samsung official, and it seems as if mine has lost it's data abilities So on my quest to find a new one to purchase, I've wanted to avoid one that wouldn't work. If any of you guys have this problem with your phone being picky about cables, please let me know so I don't feel like I'm just crazy, lol.
Yes, i have had my share of problems with cables. I had one from my old Aria that i tried to use to charge one day and completely mest up my phone. My computer wouldn't recognize the phone, it wouldn't charge, etc. That was a headache. I just stick with the Samsung cables.

honestly ive never had issues, i just got my infuse today but its charged from several differnt cables,
Car Charger
Blackberry Charger and Cable
HTC Cable in PC (and data worked)
Ive never had issues, it seems that I have about 7 or 8 micro usb cables/chargers and from my captivate to my brand new infuse ive never experienced an issue..
I've had some issues with the orignal charging cable actually wanting to charge my phone.
Also, when plugging the phone into the computer I can't use the stock cable to do any flashing and sometimes USB doesn't work. I end up using a charging cable from my Logitech K800 keyboard and it works like a charm.
Maybe look at the cables for the K800 from Logitech, I have used it to charge via wall adapter, computer USB port, and it works for flashing. It's also longer than hell and comes with a little Velcro hoop attached to it for easy storage / transportation.
I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue, lol. I thought my phone was just crazy, haha.

I've never had a problem with any cable (BlackBerry, HTC, various Samsung) on any of my Samsung devices. Used them on Captivate, Epic and Infuse with no problems. I almost wonder if the USB port's quality is as big a factor as the cables.
My phone will charge about 55% of the time. It is the most annoying and aggravating thing I have ever encountered. Of course I can't take it back because I dropped it and shattered the screen about 2 days before my case came in the mail
Some of the AT&T cables are charging-only and won't pass data (they get lots of bad reviews for this...)
General rule:
A straight-through cable will depend on the charger to determine how the device charges. If the charger shorts D+ and D- together on its end, the phone assumes AC. If the charger uses iPad/iPhone resistors to indicate a dumb charger, the Samsung will assume USB. Not sure what happens if the charger has nothing on D+/D-.
Some of the AT&T cables short D+ and D- together in the cable - meaning they'll always charge as an AC charger but won't work for data.

If anyone is short on micro usb or in the market for one,
look for data cables instead of just a charge cable.
they're about a buck ea. on ebay
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trk...&_sticky=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=15&_sc=1
I picked up about a half-dozen Blackberry branded micro USB cables off ebay for a buck a piece, shipped; they worked like a charm.
I mistakenly thought it wouldn't matter, and on a business trip to NY took my son's cable from his LG dumb-phone. I had all kinds of problems with it, so yes, I see that behavior too. It wouldn't charge unless I fully seated the cable and then removed it halfway out of the USB connector on the phone. Even then, I occasionally had problems with it.
Had the same issues. Good cables has associated "click" event when it inserted, bad ones are loose. If you look at USB connection from Samsung made cables it has significantly larges pins on bottom (probably 2x time bigger then other brands) and that's what makes a difference. This is also important in a car with a lot of vibration. I just bought specifically Samsung OEM branded microUSB cables from eBay and never had any issues after that.
FWIW... USB cables from Monoprice work just fine on my Infuse.
And I had issues charging with a cable from another Samsung phone.
My Infuse stopped being reconized by computer and at same time I realized that it wasn't charging also. It would charge on my computer but not wall or car charger. While munchin down on some wings I dropped it and it splashed into the bleu cheese dressing. The mic and charge port were crammed with cheese. I thought I cleaned it but no. I took a tooth cleaning pick (used to get food out of your teeth, has a green brush on one end) swabbed it in alcohol, the rubbing variety and gently scrubbed the contacts. Phone now charges on all chargers, computer still won't connect.
Had all sorts of issues with cords/ports. I'm convinced it has something to do with the dual sd cards. But who knows. Anyways now using a monster data cord and it works great! well as long as I only use it on one specific USB port

The SD cards have nothing to do with it.

I used to have the Captivate and when I bought the Infuse 4G, I accidently sent the cable that came with the Infuse with the Captivate. It turned out the two cables were the exact same model but somehow my Infuse will only allow me to charge with the Captivate cable and not data.
That is why I have resorted to cloud syncing. It is the future!

[Q] Nexus S (i9020a) Charge on an angle?

Hello
I am not sure how to properly explain this but hopefully someone understands what is going on.
My Nexus S (i9020a) doesn't charge properly. The original Micro USB cable that came with my phone frayed and no longer works so I went and picked up a third party one for $20. For some reason my phone will only either charge on an angle or upside down with this charge cable.
(It isn't the cable its self it works perfectly on everything else Micro USB wise)
I do find it weird that I originally thought it was the USB port on the phone that was dying so I cracked it open and there seemed to be no sign of destruction on the board so I put it back together. I then plugged it into my Nexus 7 Asus wall charger with the Asus cable and the phone charges properly no angles or upside down.
Any suggestions besides buying a $24 charger from Google?
Things I have tried:
1: Different wall chargers
(Nexus S wall charger + 3rd party M-USB):crying:
(Original Galaxy Tab 7.0 Wall charger + 3rd party M-USB):crying:
(Asus Nexus 7 wall charger + Asus M-USB):good:
2:Cracking the phone open to check the usb port on the board.
Phone: Nexus S i9020a
Carrier: Telus
Rooted: No
Version: 4.1.1
PS: Let me know if you need anymore information.
The thumbnail below is what I mean by Charge on an angle.
I doubt opening your phone will show you if the usb port is broken, unless you opened it previously. The most likely problem is that your USB port is worn out, dirty, etc and it's having trouble making contact with the cable ('charging at an angle' is usually caused by this). My recommendation is to try to clean it. First power off your phone, then try sticking something that can scrape the little metal pads in the usb port. Be careful that you don't bend or snap anything inside or outside the phone, so be very gentle.
Another possible reason, which is a problem I've run into myself, is that the charger you're using just doesn't work with the phone. My Nexus S doesn't charge when I connect it to a generic USB charger in my car, nor does it charge with most wall chargers and the original Wall charger that came with my phone was DOA. The only way for me to charge my phone is at my computer or with some wall chargers that, I guess, output more amps (I'm noob when it comes to electrical stuff! ). If it doesn't charge in one USB port, try connecting to another one and/or switching cables.
If it doesn't charge at your computer, then it's probably dirty.

Thanks for input.
I don't think the plug is worn out since it works perfectly with my Nexus 7 charger. I did look into the bottom of the phone and it does look a little dirty so that could be a small part of the issue but that doesn't explain why it it would work perfectly with one charger and not another. It does sound like it could be just the wall chargers I am using are not as good as the Nexus 7 charger (When I use the nexus 7 cable and charger the cable seems to fit alot better and it very firm when it is plugged in where when I plug in my 3rd party cable it is loose and feels like it is going to fall out. I might just buy the extra asus charge set from google since I know its a 100% work rate. was just hoping I wouldn't have had to spend that on just a wall chargers. >...<

Charging port pins lifting

Hi I noticed a while ago that pin 30 on my charging port of my tablet was lifted some so I pushed it down with a toothpick. There wasnt an issue with the tablet before, it was just something I noticed. I ordered a cable from ebay, probably a knock off, and it worked for both charging (with the use of the p1000 adapter) and for data transfer. I was using the tablet mostly for debugging and movies. I recently had it charging for a while using the rocketfish usb hub and the p1000 adapter. I tried to plug in my tablet to the pc with and without the adapter and my pc was telling me that it had an unknown device plugged in. I looked up what exactly pin 30 was and it is a ground pin. My question is would that pin affect the ability for the pc to data transfer and recognize the device? The cable currently only works for charging and that is with or without the P1000 adapter. Other than that it gives me an unknown device when plugged into the pc. I dont have another tablet or cable to test so I may just order an official cable and charger if the ground shouldnt be an issue.
Have you installed Kies? Windows cannot recognize samsung galaxy devices without it
My cable stopped charging all together. I ordered another data cable to see if my original cable was faulty. Hopefully that was the problem all along.
I got my new cable in which btw is alot more sturdier than the last. I plugged it in anticipating an error and behold! My pc recognized my tablet and began to charge. The data part works because it instantly showed that the tablet was in debug mode. So my pins were not a problem, just my cheap chinese tablet cable. P.S. I did not have to install that software and if in the future I come across a problem then I will try out the software. Unless there is a benefit to installing the samsung software? feels like an iTunes type of software. Thanks for the suggestions and hopefully this will help others in the future.
:good:
Thank you for posting your fix for your question. It drives me crazy when people ask a question. Then later reply nvm I figured it out. (And don't explain what they did) or not even reply at all.
I think I have same issue. My stock cable won't charge anymore. Do you have a link where you bought new charger? Or what store did you go to?
I ordered one from amazon and it was a knockoff that gets a red x over battery icon :/

No I order this combo kit with wall charger, car charger and 30 pin USB cable. From amazon
Weird cause the car charger works amazing. Can watch Netflix w/ full brightness and still charge. While the wall charger will only charge if shut down
But about original charger. I was mistaken. I had a 6ft. Extention cord that I would plug it into cause original cord is way to short. And come to find out it was the extention causing the issue.
But I'm still interested in a Spare wall charger that actually works. Lol where did you get yours. Is it just as good as stock

I've experienced the same with extention cord, wonder why the amps get lost on the way into the battery?

Well technically the extention cord isn't putting out the same amount of amps as the wall outlet. Especially when the gauge of the wire is way smaller most likely. But I like to use my tablet while charger and refuse to 3ft away from wall so its kinda neccessary lol

Charger?

Ok, I've tried to search the net before posting but I can't find anything. I have no idea how to use this charger, the actual wire part on the end isn't a usb plug to go into the plug part, it's like an over sized iphone 5 type deal. What do I do as I tried to put it in the plug but didn't want to force it?
Hold charger facing 1+ logo up.
Hold USB cable with the gold-plated contacts facing up
Now push USB cable into Charger.
Is it so difficult?
You put the angled end into the base unit on the side that has the red one.

I THINK you talk about the cable not looking like your average USB cable, correct?
While it's a rather uncommon format, I've seen several USB thumb drives in this rather strange format, it fits a normal USB-port perfectly.
The only downside is that you may be able to plug it in the wrong way - resulting in no juice and no data.
Don't like the charger that comes with the OPO the uk adaptor makes it look awful and sticks out a lot. I am going to use my old HTC adaptor that has USB. Currently using my blackberry charger but it seems to be taking ages.
I know this is to do with voltage or whatever, can someone with more knowledge tell me what volts/amps the OPO charger is compaired to other USB AC chargers?

The OPO Charger has an output of 2Amps. Quick charging..
Likely your older Blackberry chargers have an output and slower charge rate because it is 0.8A or 800mAh

Haahaha, don't be worry man I had the same problem when I first got mine. I was just being too cautious, just push the little bugger into your device . In fact I was so cautious i actually put a support ticket in, when I realized i just didn't push the charger piece in all the way i felt pretty stupid.
