Never heard of such a thing. They are just not that fragile. I've had mine over a year and have drpped it a few times (usually in some kind of lightweight case) and no sign of cracking/damage.

My cousin sat his fat ass on mine multiple times and hes easily 325. Still perfectly fine. That cat would have to be pretty darn big to crack the screen.
Sent from my Galaxy Note SGH-I717 running Seraphim Troposphere ICS ROM.
I think concerns over the screen cracking are not likely warranted, but other types of screen damage can still happen from pressure. I tripped getting out of a tent last summer and landed with my full weight down on the screen through the heel of my hand. There was definitely a small screen blemish when touching the screen (similar to how it looks when pushing hard on the screen normally), but the glass was still fine. These things are pretty versatile.
The screen is pretty tough. If dropped mine a total of 2 times, both times face flat on concrete and not a sign of damage other than the backlight a tinsy bit dimmer than before.
Oh, and my father in law, about 300lbs sat on it once.

Gorrila glass or not, that spec is a gimmic anyway.
Hardened tempered glass is what the xoom has, and almost every other capacitive touch screen device out there. It will get scratched if you are not carefull, and will break if you abuse it.
Bottom line is this: if you want a great tablet that has amazing dev support and all the ports a tablet should have in the first place (except full size usb, but we cant have everything can we), then a xoom is what you want.

omg I wanna cry.... but this is good to know.... don't drop it from ear height or perhaps shoulder height if you're a bit taller then this guy... and as long as you don't carry razor blades in your pocket, there's need for a screen protector
I hate you for making me cringe, but thanks for the post
Yeah, kinda bummed I put a screeen protector on. Prob. take it off now.
Yea I put one on and the screen didnt look as nice as when its bare. Whats the point of having these beautiful displays if u r going to cover it. I have a bare screen right now and it's amazing !!!!!

If you guys have been in the Accessories part of the Captivate forum.. you'll hear alot of people's opinions with different screen protectors.
Such as me who's currently rocking me some PhantomSkinz.. I seriously don't notice I have a screen protector on unless I try to dig my nail into the protector lol but why would I do that!? Not to mention it doesn't really have that rubbery texture.
It's really awesome. if you're not a fan of PhantomSkinz someone said SGP skin protectors are awesome. The user even said it actually made the touchscreen much more sensitive to the touch. just a heads up for those who aren't sure about screen protectors.
The video btw shows some scratches on the device .. a lot actually.. so reconsider if you value your phone's looks
Screen protectors belong on cheap plastic panels. I enjoy my phone so much more when touching glass. Just make sure to get a BlackBerry like sleeve for putting it in your pockets. Since going bare, I will never allow plastic screen guards to deface my touch devices again.

Lots of discussions on this in other forums. Some people swear the phone doesn't have gorilla glass, some do. The vague press release (dated the 24th of august i think) says that Samsung uses Gorilla glass in the galaxy S handset - but it doesn't mention which ones. Engadget ran the story and claimed that all US Galaxy S varieties have gorilla glass. Corning mentions that is part of the AMOLED manufacturing process.
It seems that Gorilla glass is in the phones - it would not make sense to make different AMOLED sandwiches when they are so expensive to start with - but I would love to see something official that says "The Captivate uses Gorilla Glass".

I would like to see the same. I have a small scratch on my screen from being in my pocket. Its one of those scratches you cant see unless the light reflects off the screen just right and the screen off. I know its there but its not noticable. Plus i dont ever keep anything in my pocket where my phone is other than my phone. thats why im iffy about the captivate having gorilla glass.
I got tired of having a screen protector and ripped mine off a week and a half ago. If the screen is not Gorilla Glass, its is still better than anything I have had on a phone a before. The plastic on the top front part of my phone has a few scratches on it, but I have yet to get a scratch on the screen. Only thing I am using now is the Bodyglove case. The screen feels so much better.
... Despite the fact that it is gorilla glass ( or not? ) my screen have two light small scratches on it... and i ' baby ' my phone too. >.>
This article gives confirmation:
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/08/2...ts-the-samsung-galaxy-s-super-amoled-screens/
[I wanted to post a link to my other post describing my experiences with Gorilla glass but I am not allowed to post a link, so I'll just repeat my message.]
Unfortunately I found out the hard way that Gorilla glass doesn't prevent scratches on the screen. The phone is only 2 months old, I am using it with a silicone skin and no screen-protector. The phone is always in my jeans-pocket, without anything else in it. And still there is a small scratch (2mm) and a dot...
I guess I have to go to screenprotectors. I cannot trust the claims of Samsung and Gorilla glass anymore. :-(
Anyone else using the sprint screen protectors for their epic? I just bought a pack and I'm really disappointed with them. They are just big enough to cover the screen it self. So there is no margin for error when putting them on. Also I think they are supposed to be anti-glare so make the beautiful screen of my epic hazy and almost pixelated. Any suggestions for decent clear screen protectors?
Does the epic really need a screen protector? I thought the screen was made from some super durable stuff?

People have been saying that the skinomi ones are too long I think... I'd recommend the phantom skinz one since I've had no problem, they have a cut out for the sensors and camera (which the skinomi does not have) and they have a lifetime guarantee.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
this is the one im talking bout i ordered one it has lifetime replacements and openings for the sensors and cam it is awesome on the htc hero so i hope it continues
Well, all I know is that at least the first batch of Skinomis didn't turn out so well. See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746037
Too long, but possibly good customer service? And like I said, no cutouts for the lights/sensor/camera. Skinomi has gotten plenty of good reviews for other phones, but for some reason the ones for the Epic haven't been well received.

Yup! I am no doubt in the minority but I have managed to scratch my screen. It was in strange circumstances having to do with hiking on a trail (and I hardly ever hike, less have my phone out...) but scratchedy it went. No 20ft heights or bouncing. Just fell face down from my pocket on a dirt path with a pebble somewhere in there. They're not invincible, people.

Also managed to put a little hairline scratch down by the menu button, but i have no clue how i did that.

Couldn't see myself doing this to my TF! It'd be like kicking my children. (if I had any) But nice to see how strong Gorilla Glass is. I haven't purchased a screen protector yet and I've had the TF since early June. Thankfully no scratches on it, even when my dog runs across the screen or jumps on it when he jumps onto my bed.
Good to know, now I feel more confident throwing it into my backpack when traveling. No more worrying about headphones, keys, pens, etc scratching it.
Yeah, Sure you can scratch it with keys, nails etc. and you'll be fine. But give it to my wife to carry it in her purse for half an hour and it's already scratched

I'm sure it does. It always pains my heart to see him blend a perfectly working electronic device.
To be honest wouldn't any other glass withstand such a test too? I expected some hammers and razors in action. I buy glasses with glass lens (not plastic ones) because I found that they just don't scratch, and they are not gorilla glass or anything, just normal glass.
Different tablet, still Gorilla glass: I made the mistake to place my Galaxy Tab on an high place the cat loves. So obviously I watched when the clawed beast jumped, partly landing on the screen, doing his best to grip, fail at not falling and look offended. Some marks on the screen, but nothing that couldn't be cleaned with a damp cloth.
That said... I sure hope Gorilla glass has some other quality: keep in mind that to cut glass they use diamonds or special tools, it's fragile but pretty scratch resistant.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk
It hurts to watch him do that. I know it's pretty scratch resistant.. but when I was watching it on my TF, I kept checking for scratches.. as if he'd induce them on my screen.

There is a YouTube video claiming to be some dude poking his hox with a steak knife. I have an XtremeGuard condom on my screen and it feel fine. I can't take good care of my stuff (e.g. Keys in same pocket as phone) so I am not taking chances.
Not that Reliable
I used my HOX without screen for more than a month but from no where came a couple of scratches. Not from Sand. May be from my keys. I have no idea and I still feel bad for not having had a screen protector. Now I have a screen protector but I can still see the rainbow effect when I see the scratch through the screen protector. Please get a good screen protector if you cannot be extra careful with your phone.
My wife's iPhone 4s has gorilla glass 1 and no screen protector and not a single scratch is yet to be seen. I was expecting Gorilla Glass 2 to be more scratch resistant but I am really disappointed.
It's the oleophobic coating that is getting scratched. I dont think this was perfected in gorilla glass 1 so they may not have included it.
I will never use a device without a screen protector. Gorilla glass or not, glass is glass and plastic is plastic; they all scratch. Even diamonds scratch so I personally won't take chances.
I have Ghost Armour installed on my devices and everything works just as good as naked. If you already have scratches, try GA anyways, they claim to be able to fill scratches.

my exact opinion, either that or u protect ur screen like a maniac so the next owner scratches it for u.. nice job keepin it safe for the next owne ;D i still use a protector cause i plan on keepin this one mint till the One X + comes out cuz i wanna get the most $ i can get out of it
Every phone I have had sinve the windows mobile days have had screen protectors and many cases and extended batteries.. I think I have wasted more money on that crap then phones. lol not to mention the countless hours rooting and flashing roms to the point where the wife thinks im crazy. anyway just got the X and so far its naked and stock.. I have told myself this time. im gonna use the phone as a phone and not worry bout the little things outside of a case etc. not gonna root it or use a screen protector.. guess after 9 years of buying crap and rooting etc.. I need a break. and the one x so far has been great all around.. and the screen rocks naked. feels so much better.. bah anyway rant over... back to work.. lol
I currently have a screen protector on my phone and I hate it. However, I was noticing micro scratches on my phone that also drive me crazy. Like others have said, it is in the coating on the glass but they are permanent. At least with a screen protector, I can swap it out every couple weeks.

You might only have experience with cheapo protectors. A good quality one (Skinomi and Bodyguardz are ones I've used) does not change the look of the screen at all. A quality protector is also difficult to scratch. I've had a Skinomi on an HTC Flyer for over a year, and had a Bodyguardz on my Desire Z for a year and a half, both with no prominent scratches, and protectors still looks close to new. Maybe some superficial scuffing visible in just the right light, but completely invisible when the screen is on. Good protectors also show fingerprints much less than the naked screen, so they actually end up looking better than no protector.
Some people on here have gotten some serious scratches on Gorilla Glass with normal use. Others have claimed no use even after significant abuse. Everyone's experience tends to be a little different.. But more than a few people have showed up on here with bad scratches, wishing they had used a protector. So that is the point of using them. And once you have a scratch on the screen, you can't undo it.
There is a slight difference in feel with a protector. For some that is a legit deal breaker, for others the difference is negligible. Using a protector or not is a very personal choice. I'm totally with you that phones are meant to be used. I don't baby my phones at all. Have never used a case. But I prefer to use a screen protector.

Drop tests aren't always accurate, as quite a lot depends on where the point of impact is after the fall. Overall though, given that the S4 did survive a few of the drops is a good thing, as it seemed the S3 is a bit less durable.
Either way though, Gorilla Glass isn't meant to offer a ton of protection for drops - It's scratch resistant, not shatterproof.

Haha I most certainly am... I'll be posting pics today. I'm just most upset that the bezel chipped apart. I think that if it were able to absorb some of the impact or if there was a simple metal bezel the device would have fared much better.
Actually, the fact the plastic bezel broke too meant that even a metal case wouldn't have saved you.
Read up about "crush zones" in cars and how if the frame (bezel in this case) is crumpled, it reduces the damage to the people inside (screen in this case).
It sounds like your phone hit the corner and hit hard enough that unless you had a TPU case, it would've been dead either way.
+1. A lot of factors go into how phone damage occurs when you drop it. Five feet without a case purely on the corner is enough to damage the best of builds but throw on a decent tpu and your phone might live to see the light. Also would like to add that as long as you can replace the screen with ease, which luckily Samsung designed the phone well enough to be disassemble, it's not that bad of a situation.
At the end of the day though you should really get phone insurance. It's the best case money can buy lol

If you're a little handy with fixing phones and what not then you might be in luck. The glass and lcd can be separated just like the s3. Lcd which is the display has the touch built into it. The glass is just for protection. Ive done it on the s3 many times. With a heat gun and a blade. The glass alone cost $30-40. Find your local repair shop at most you should pay is $150.
