Persistent CM9 GPS Fix - EVO 4G Android Development

I have created a flashable zip based on galandy's Qualcomm Vision GPS Driver v1.1 that will survive a cm9 upgrade. It works the same exact way gapps does. Simply flash this once and every time you flash a new cm9 rom the gps driver will be backed up and then restored after flashing.
The actually GPS fix is not mine and all thanks goes to galandy.

Shouldn't be necessary but doesn't hurt either.

Changing my battery cover to the original made my GPS work.

I'm having quite a bit of trouble getting accurate reads on my gps. Does this need to be re-flashed after each nightly? My gps works.. but it tracks about 10 yards off of where I actually am, and cuts corners. Kind of a drag when you're using the running apps to track your distance.

After the last two nightlies I'm having GPS problems as well. I know you have been having issues for awhile now but after a clean install of jmz's latest GPS is completely inaccurate. The old fix makes it worse and this one doesn't seem to be working either. Very strange.

Poor GPS signal on any rom?

So I feel as if I've been having poor GPS on any rom, whether it be AOKP, CM or even Stock based. I've tried a few apps to know luck. Using Waze yesterday, it was dropping in and out as I was going down a highway. Currently I'm using Eclipse rom on my phone. And I've tried flashing roms with TWRP and CWM with the same results.
The only thing I'm doing differently is running a 4.2 gapps made for 4.1.2 roms, could this be causing the issue?
Or should I just go root66 and redo everything?

I experience the same issue with AOKP, CM, and stock roms. I can get a GPS lock if my phone is on the dashboard of my car, but it goes in and out if the phone is sitting on my lap. This makes it very difficult to use the S3 for turn by turn navigation. I haven't had any problems while running Eclipse though.
Try this! Worked for me. Found this somewhere on XDA
1. Download "GPS Test" from the play store
2. Turn on your GPS and open the app
3. Press the menu button and go to settings
4. Press "Clear AGPS" at the top (your phone might reboot)
5. After that go back to settings and "Update AGPS"
Or this (also worked for me - from some XDA post):
"like some of you, i too was having GPS lock issues. here's what i did which fixed it for me. can't guarantee anything, but might be worth your try.
go to application manager - click on 'mapservicesamsung' - force stop - back out then click on 'maps' - force stop - clear cache - clear data - reboot into recovery - wipe dalvik and cache - reboot.
hope this works for some of you also. my GPS has been locking within 5 secs since doing this, and it hasn't been that good since before flashing my first S3 rom back in july! =) "
Wow! The second one worked. I'm on a cm based ROM so it didn't have a the Samsung app. But I cleared the data for maps and cleared the data/cache and it worked! I even lock on inside my house.

Downgrade from CM 10.1 to 10.0?

I accidentally installed the 10.1 nightly (it was erroneously offered via auto-update)
Notifications and WiFi tether don't work, so I need to return to 10.0.
Is there any non-destructive way to do this downgrade? I'm getting really sick of wiping and re-installing everything!

Yes, re-install the rom from recovery. Wipe cache + dalvik and re-install JB 4.1.2 gapps if needed. Then fix permissions and reboot.
Don't need to wipe data/factory reset.
I checked my claims because I was curious. You will need to wipe. :/
Hmm.. yeah I suspected as much.

Something is definitely changed after NS lost support from JBQ and his boys. 4.1.2 which is based on actual sources for the NS from Google definitely still runs better than some zomgfastbatterysaving 4.2 ROMs.
Here a how I've dirty flashed ROMs without issues. Of course I make a backup first. Then, I wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and format system. Then I flash the ROM, gapps, and reboot. Learned this from the1dynasty. Hope it works.

I'm on the last version (I think) of cm10. cm-10-20121220-NIGHTLY-crespo. This had been removed from cm download. only stable remains though.
With marmite v7.2 kernel (no overclock), my nexus s is running without hiccup. Without marmite, I get sporadic ram overran problem with crappy voice calling (in and out calling not working) and sluggishness.

GPS issues

My s3 has been acting funny lately.. the GPS seems a little wonky. I noticed when flashing a 4.2 rom.. my GPS seems to want to work..then just won't get lock on its own..I have to toggle GPS on/off to force it to work..and even then its not very solid. When I flash back to a 4.1 rom.. it seems to work. It gets lock on its own..but even then..I notice a strange inaccuracy.. I use My Tracks..a free GPS app..when running side by side with my tablet..the location seems weak on the phone..while driving in a straight line..it shows me on the other side of the highway..but near..not too fat away..then sometimes it seems on track. Now on the tablet..its dead nuts accurate.. showing me driving straight..not like I had a twelve pack first..lol..could formatting the SD card of damaged something? I wonder if all the flashing I do screwed something up..

My only fix
I have had the same problem. On CM10 my GPS works flawless but when I go to CM10.1 the GPS only works for an app if I toggle it inside the app. I have only found one fix so far for it to work in CM10.1.
Here's what I used from buhohitr (post):
Download the zip, unzip it, then copy the 2 files (gps.conf and certificate) to /system/etc of your device, reboot and try out your gps. Let me know how it goes. You must be rooted to do this.

I read on XDA, someone talked to a Verizon rep and said it's a VZW bug, not ROM/phone related. This worked for me, here's the fix:
Clear Data on Maps
Clear Data on Google Services Framework
Go to Location Services and turn OFF Verizon Location Services (leave other 2 ON)
Reboot Phone
You should now have GPS lock (hopefully)

If you can get into download mode, you're still OK - you just need to odin via PC. Check the MD5 and filesize of your root66.tar, if it's failing it's most likely a corrupt download. If they match and it still fails, what is the error message that comes up? Once you flash the stock img, get superuser and a custom recovery, and from there I hope you made a nandroid or can clean flash a new ROM. Hope this all helps.

Yeah, I've heard just Odin back to stock and then a clean flash can do the trick. I still recommend getting the app called GPS Status and downloading the aGPS Fix. Good luck!

Of course I spoke too soon when I look at the 3 choices under location settings it's missing the Verizon setting it actually only has 2 settings plus 1 location setting toggle at the top which activates the 2 at the bottom it's a different layout.. It's gone back to only working what I toggle it on and off again..
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Hmmmm that sounds like the ROM had changed the menu layout. The problem could be a ROM related issue. Have you checked if its been reported in its specific thread?
Also, go to Google Now (or Google Search), hit menu and go to settings. Check that Google's location services are on.
Lastly, I've heard about and seen better GPS with Wifi turned on, even if you're not connected. Try that too.
Sent via SGS3 using Tapatalk
What worked for me 100% is the app called GPS Status & Toolbox. Worked flawless. I have zero issues and locks solid in less than 20 seconds. That is the longest, usually 5 seconds is normal for me. Program runs when outage GPS enabled and running google maps.
I have tried them..just doesnt work unless i toggle gps on/off..lol..but its strange I can go back to 4.1 and gps works fine... All 4.2 ROMs give me the same issue..the GPS works fine..just doesnt start up on its own when I start maps or something.. I have go toggle GPS..then it works..that goes for any GPS app..just like the one u are talking about..it sounds like your GPS was indeed coming on at least..just weak..my icon doesn't start unless I toggle it after starting GPS app of choice..

GPS problem cm10.2 8/7 nightly

Hi mate,
I've been using CM10.1 since beginning. I only tested 10.2 but it's not my DD cause I like Acid Audio with Noozxoide and it's not compatible with 4.3 yet.
Since July builds I'm noting strange behavior related to GPS... Maybe this apply to your case too using 10.2...
I realised that when I charge through any USB port, GPS brakes. Running Waze for a feel minutes and hangs phone completely. I have to reboot, wipe cache, dalvik and fix permissions. This procedure brings Waze back to life. I run Waze about 3hrs a day, every day, together with bluetooth audio in my car. Everything runs perfect until due to any reason I need to connect phone to a PC USB port again. It only occurs when connected to a PC USB port. With wall charger or car charger, always fine.
Despite dirty flash or clean rom install, this pattern occurs. I flashed official 09/08 CM10.1 yesterday and got the same issue. Maybe it's something with kernel Razrteam didn't passed through yet.
It took me days to perceive that, as everything was fine for 5...6 days and suddenly and without messing with anything the issue started from sudden. I realised the only different thing I've been doing before the hang was charging phone at work through PC.
Hope this experience can help you detect something there!
I tried to use the latest nightly from cm site and it didn't stuck in google maps but it still stuck the GPS in waze and i need to do a fresh boot. Im doing another tests i post in advance

NP! If nothing fix it, if you have a nandroid backup of a Motorola 4.1.2 flash it and get a GPS lock using your preferred app then do a fresh install of a CM10.1. (with a factory reset wipe). GPS will work fine. But if you do this, don't forget to backup everything as you 'll loose data.
I don´t know how to do this gps lock with nandroid, but i tried others nightlys roms, and the problems still remains!!!
I saw in the CM10.2 post thread, and other users have the same problem.
THanks again!!

Shouldn't be any reason you couldn't use TWRP. I'm pretty sure nard himself uses it. The CWM was a CM project for a long time, and still the recovery built within it. Everyone pushes their stuff.
been running M7 for about a day now. had one fc with touchdown, my work email client, but otherwise looks good. surprised i had to manually change build.prop to set the dpi. i'm not blind, so i hate the trend towards gigantic fonts even on smallish screens like this one.
i also wasn't able to use tibu to restore securid from my old phone (vzw droid4) but i suspect that app uses some system properties like imei to create its security, so it can't be moved... not a problem. just have to do clean in stall and reimport the token.
one thing i noticed even in cm11m2 on my d4 as well as on this phone in cm11m7 is that the included sms app doesn't actually have a dark theme, and that sticks out like a sore thumb. even when you check the box for dark theme in the sms app itself, it's still white. not a huge deal obviously but doesn't match the rest of cm's normal polish.

doh, you're right. my point still stands about messaging not matching the rest of cm's theming. i guess they expect people to just use chomp, go, handcent or whatever other app... i like the standard one in cm tho. except for how light it is.
What did change from the blobs for the builds after 14 /06 ?
Running 14/06 now, really good, battery charging issues are gone (i think), because a new kernel/other blobs.

which build are you on? i'm running cm11-20140608-Snapshot-M7 (which is 4.4.2, not 4.3.3) and have no issues to report so far. i haven't given it a full shakedown yet - still haven't tried BT or GPS but so far so good. watched netflix on the bus this morning and never had an issue. my wife and i text a lot and haven't had issues w/ that either. this evening i'm going to try out BT with my elm327 obd-ii adapter and if i have time, test audio over an avantree cara adapter. i started google maps a couple times and it found me quickly and accurately but i haven't run gps for more than a minute or so at a time so i don't know how it'll do. maybe i'll turn it on while on the bus this afternoon and see if it works well for the whole ride home.

First, use the most up-to-date recovery; I'm pretty sure that cwm 6.0.1.2 isn't it if I see 6.0.4.7 on other devices. I like using TWRP personally, and there's a thread in this forum for that. The outdated recovery is probably the main problem right there for the failed flash.
Second, it doesn't look like you wiped anything in your steps. No factory reset, not even wiping cache and dalvik. Most people do a clean flash (that's a factory reset in recovery) when troubleshooting a failure to install a custom ROM.
Try using the latest recovery, wiping at least cache and dalvik, and see if it helps.
Good luck

i second this. my steps were:
1- boot to download mode, install twrp
2- boot to recovery, flash CM
3- while still in recovery, flash gapps if you want them (make sure you have the correct version of gapps from the CM site)
4- still in recovery, wipe cache and dalvik
5- still in recovery, do factory reset
6- reboot normally (it's called 'system' in twrp) and start using phone
note that there is no need to copy/flash SU at any time because CM is already rooted.
using nightly 22/06 my phone slowed down to unusable slow, flashed 24/06 yesterday.
Never had this before on cm nightly's for the relay.
And the charging (usb) problems aren't over yet (sometimes it works fine for a few hours, sometimes a few minutes).
Did a clean install a week ago (didn't solve anything).

Ok. Now, find out what version of cpu you have and get some logs to help them track down your problems.
There's a search box in the corner.
I don't have any of the problems you are describing and I am betting the developers do not, either.

Right now, I'm having this issue on 11-20140608-Snapshot-M7-apexqtmo. I did wipe data and cache before I flashed. I'm not sure what is causing my issue.
I am tempted to reflash it back to factory, and take it back under my total care and get it replaced for a S5, but I really like my keyboard. :crying:
did you wipe cache and dalvik after flashing the rom? the only quirk i've noticed on m7 is that if i don't reboot every couple of days, my work email program (touchdown) likes to get slow and crashy while composing emails. going to the recent apps drawer and closing everything there usually fixes that. gps and bluetooth work fine even at the same time and battery life is great. after having tried multiple roms on my droid4 and having gps and camera issues, i am pleasently susprised how stable cm is on this relay (which i've only had a couple weeks now).

I even tried that too. My phone's about a year and a half old now. I've noticed recently if the keyboard is out, or i'm holding the phone sideways, and I get a call, the phone app crashes over and over till i rotate it upward so the display is vertical, then it stops crashing(all while the phone is still ringing so I can still answer it.)
