Is it worth it to spend $150 to get the keyboard dock and why?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
For me: yes. I'm a sysadmin which means I sometimes need some specific app, or really need a mouse and keyboard combo. I've got ASUS' included rebranded Splashtop remote HD installed on my home PC, and with the dock it's just like I'm at home.
The dock (for me) really takes the tablet from a neat toy/time waster to a productive tool, it really replaced my laptop.
^this works for me as well
What I like about the dock
Keyboard is much easier to use for typing than the "virtual one".
Keyboard Shortcuts and specialized function keys (e.g. Home, Menu, Media Controls)
Looks/Feels like a netbook computer.
Battery boost
Extra SD Card Slot
It closes to protect the screen.
Very glad I bought it.

Yes but it still works even if the battery is depleted. Yes it has a usb and you can use a usb hub to connect more than one peripheral.
yes, it adds a whole new dimension to your tablet. plus the extra battery life, full size USB port, and full size SD card slot. it can't be beat.
The only thing I don't like is how top heavy it is.

Yes. I usually just connect the tablet to the dock and plug it in. Both pieces get charged at the same time.
There's a USB connector on the side too.

Instead of connecting the charger cable to the tablet you connect it to the dock when the tablet is docked. Nothing special.

I waited about a week to get the dock only because I was broke lol. Went to gamestop today and traded in a bunch of stuff to get the dock and a case.
I am very happy and impressed. I need a laptop at all times for work and to log into my home pc, and this just cut inches and weight from me carrying my laptop in its bag on my back while driving my scooter lol.
With the usb port I can either connect my external HDD or controller, then you have another sd card slot on top of that. Went from 32gb to 80gb lol.
All the tablet specific buttons and everything make it totally worth the $150. Now it just looks like a netbook but better.
I found one online for $131 but i might go trade stuff at game stop and get it for $150
Actually $160 with taxes :/

Hi all guys,
Yesterday I bought a Atrix 4G lapdock very cheap , but when I tried to connect my phone (Motorola Atrix 2), it didn't work and I turn the connectors (HDMI, USB) for my atrix 2, when I did this I could connect the phone to the lapdock but when I opened the lapdock appears the Desktop for 5 seconds and suddenly it freeze and on the phone appears a message "UNSUPPORTED DEVICE This device is not optimized to work with this lapdock model".
- Is there something that I can do ??
Please any solution... Thanks
Thanks I found the solution

Okay but what I don't understand is, if you have a laptop, why would you connect the phone in webtop mode to that? Your laptop should be capable of more than your phone. Or maybe I'm missing something? Not being sarcastic or anything I just seriously do not understand the point of it

One of the things that would entice me to use my phone as opposed to my laptop would be the easy ability to keep your computer's and phone's files in sync, and multitasking on your phone's view as well as a full laptop.

Literally the most unhelpful thing you could say here. It's like saying "Everyone! I have cancer! " and then for your next post saying "I found a cure! "
What -was- the solution?
This should be in the Atrix 2 accessories forum.
Full reboot is the easy solution in my experience

I've mod'ed three of those OG Atrix Lapdocks (2 for atrix 2's and one for a droid razr). It's a simple mod just swapping the connectors, and any problems I had getting the webtop to come up properly were resolved by simply completely rebooting the phone. Once I did the full reboot and everything loaded back up I dropped it into the Lapdock and had no issues with functionality. My phone constantly shows the unsupported device note on 2.3.6 rooted, but it has no effect on the use of the Lapdock.
I'm hoping to try the full Ubuntu mod eventually, but haven't come up with the time to tackle it yet.

It's smaller than most laptops. Don't get me wrong, I'd much prefer a MacBook Air (pretty much incomparably better in fact) but this is $60 instead of $999. I have lots of devices but the one thing I don't have at the moment is an ultraportable laptop (my laptop is powerful but it's pretty big, more of a desktop replacement), so this fills the gap nicely.
They started out at $500 and I'd agree with your logic at that price. They should be ashamed at that one actually, considering most of the computing power is in the phone.

I'm lost. Aren't you supposed to plug it into a laptop to get webtop mode? Please explain it to me, I know with the hack I have used webtop mode on my TV. Is the lapdock a small monitor or just a cradle that enables webtop mode and you still need a medium to connect to?

Hey bud,
I have a similair goal in mind and have begun gathering gear for my desktop replacement system lol. I have a monitor already. I just picked up the iHome bluetooth keyboard from my local store here. Dude, paired and connected in a snap. No extra work needed. All i do is turn bt on on the phone, turn the keyboard on and it immediattely defaults to the keyboard for text inpuut. I am in the process of researching how to remap the keys for optimized android functionality as this model is mapped out for iphone. but the media keys work well. volume up and down. pressing the play key automatically starts the media player and plays music. I am actually typing out this post on it right now in my car with my phone docked to my windshield lol. i love it. the arrow keys work in most apps to scroll through and select stuff. Now all i need is a mouse and mhl adapter. I gave up my pc when the hardrive croaked because my adroid phone does alll i need.
I started using android phones as a desktop replacement since i had my G2x. this phone is much easier to accomplish the task with. and with cloud storage we dont even need to use usbhost to latch on an external hardrive. Best of luck dude.

As far as I'm aware you need a Samsung tablet cable or connector. I don't believe the Note 10.1 has any sort of wireless charging capabilities built-in, and even if it did you'd need a proper wireless charger.

Just buy a USB to Mini-B cable and you can connect/charge it with your pc. Make sure your pc installs the correct usb driver for it because it needs to communicate before getting the correct current/voltage.
You would need the cable anyway to reprogram with SixaxisPairTool.

For charging on pc, all 4 leds will flash while charging. They will switch off when done.
I presume you'd want to use it wirelessly using bluetooth. For bluetooth connection take a look at Sixaxis

Install procedure including how to pair etc.

You need to be rooted. If not rooted you can use a wired controller.

The controller doesnt blink any lights or anything. When i just plug the controller to my pc it blinks all 4 lights for a little bit then stops (assuming its charged) not sure what im doing wrong or if my controller just isnt working. Just got the controller in the mail today. I admit tho, when i first got it i was stupid and excited and plugged it into the wall. The first thing is try with Dead Trigger. It has native support. Go to options etc. The mapping is very small and hard to see.
Go to Preferences->Gamepad Settings->Enable Gamepad. Make sure it's ticked.
Go to Keyboard Emulation->Bypass IME->untick.
Report back your results.
p.s. this might be silly but don't substitute letter o with zero for address.

Yes. With the right mhl adaptor it is entirely possible.
As far as controlling them with the lapdocks.... No. We dont have the software needed. You should still be able to display to them though.

I think the mouse and keyboard on the lapdock is just usb. So as long as i can get it all wired right I think it should work. Any idea what the right MHL adapter is?
I wouldn't risk it tbh. You would have to splice and dice. If i remember correctly, the laptops are made for a dual connection, ie. HDMI and USB at the same time. I'm not sure that this phone is capable of that, seeing as the USB and mhl have to go into the same place.
I think I remember seeing someone trying this before and it failed.
Just about and HDMI adapter on amazon should work. The one I got years ago cost me maybe $8 with shipping.

sorry thought this was on the g2 q&a my bad
Using a Samsung micro USB - HDMI worked fine for me using the GPE rom. I was able to have my screen display on my TV with no issues. I was hoping to use this to stream FIOS Mobile to a Hotel TV. Unfortunately, when FIOS Mobile sees an HDMI connection, it won't stream
You do need to power this connection. If not, you'll get nothing. This is the cable I used...
So maybe my original post wasnt clear? I know we can get hdmi out of the usb port. What i wanted to know is if there is an adapter that allows you do hdmi out AND connect a usb mouse or keyboard at the same time. On the samsung s4 or s5 or one of them, there was a media dock that allowed this. Not sure if the hardware is here on the m8 to do something similar.
EDIT: This thing: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EDD-S20JWEGSTA
I think samsung uses a proprietary 11pin mhl to do what im talking about. Pretty sure the m8 just has the normal mhl, 5 pin or whatever so this isnt possible. If anyone knows different let me know. I sure wish this phone had a dedicated micro hdmi port.
