Finally for sale for a sensible price in UK - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus. Wifi only version. EU sourced. Decent price though. Expansys in the UK have them for £194.99 .

Checking out this forum because I spotted that and just ordered one. I know it's on the list of devices to get ICS, but I've already read enough of this forum not to ask when. :/

Samsung definitely have form when it comes to not delivering firmware. I just assume whichever Samsung device I buy will not receive any updates. I was burnt by the i8910HD, which really needed updates but never got them. I also have a original (XEU) Tab stuck on Froyo. However in this case, Froyo is fine IMO.

ICS handsets "Coming Soon"

*Apologies if I have raised this in the incorrect location*
I am UK based and am very close to upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus on ICS as my contract is due to end (Vodafone). I am aware of some of the early issues with the Nexus but I am confident the majority will be ironed out quickly and 'currently' they are not putting me off purchasing what looks like a very competent phone.
However, I was wondering which other new, pure ICS phones are in the pipe line as I would consider holding off if the right phone was due to be released in the near future. I would also consider 'None pure' ICS phones but I would ideally stay away from other operators bloat-ware
To clarify, i am looking for a high spec phone with a large screen such as that found on the GN.
Any assistance is appreciated.

There haven't been any big announcements regarding this yet. But the advantage you have is being in the UK. It is fairly easy to find an unbranded, unlocked phone running vanilla android. I would go and get the nexus though, unless you want to wait for the Galaxy S3 which could show up Q2 next year.

I agree with your point about being based in the UK. We do seem to be quite lucky when it comes to getting unbranded, unlocked handsets.
I am definitely leaning towards the GN.
I am also considering getting a SGII with a custom ICS ROM when that is available on a 12 month contract and then picking up the new SIII or something similar mid way through 2012. The 12 month contacts on the GN don't look great - if I can even get one on Vodafone.
Thank you for your reply

[Q] No Firmware in Kies? Flashing Euro ROM?

Hi all.
I bought a refurbed Tab 7.0 Plus off of eBay, and when I plug it into Kies I get a blank firmware version field.
This means I can't update to a new firmware version via Kies; I am wondering if flashing the device to the EU version of the firmware will help (it currently has the US firmware, and keeps offering US services and downloads whilst locking me out of the UK equivalents, which is super annoying!).
Current firmware is as follows:
> Kernel Ver. - 2.6.36-P6210UEKJC-CL567728
> Build No. - HTJ85B.UEKJC P6210UEKJC
I am planning to use Odin to flash P6210XXKL2_16G (a Euro ROM) onto the device (which I located on both this forum and Samsdroid).
My question is: will flashing this version onto the tab be safe (I know there is always a chance of bricking but I *should* be okay here, right)? And will changing the ROM fix the Kies issue?
If KIES is showing blank firmware field it is a sign it was flashed wrongly before. as long as you do a clean flash with the official version KIES sometimes will see it as an official device.
Sorry edit. Just seen the refurbed bit.. Kies doesnt support refurbished items

Gah, sucks that Kies doesn't support refurbished items. Wish the merchant had warned me before I payed!!
In that case I may simply try flashing with a clean ROM (as the build on the tab doesn't seem to tie up with other official releases) and see if that helps solve the issue. Is the firmware I've downloaded the correct (official) firmware?
Edit: I've chickened out and have contacted the merchant for a refund. It wasn't so bad when I flashed my Moto Flipout, as that was only £50 at stake vs £250, plus when I unziped the new firmware zip file, there were 3 different .tar files to choose from. I didn't want to risk it. Hopefully I am still covered under distance selling regs and also the fact the refurb is unsupported by Kies and is locked to US (neither of which are mentioned in the description) will work in my favour. Will go and invest in an English tab instead methinks!!! xD

Smart move. If the seller never mentioned those things he has miss sold it. The galaxy tab is a nice device. But with refurbed items Samsung will not give warranty (past experience). For an expensive device you want all the support you can get; warranty, updates etc.

Yep, got in touch with the seller last night and he has agreed to a refund, so I'm not complaining. It's such a shame, as £200 was a great price for that Tab. Well, I guess you get what you pay for, eh?
Seems I'm going to have to pay around £320+ for a new 7.0 Plus, although for about £20 or so more I might as well invest in the 7.7...

Well if a price seems to good to be true, then there is something wrong.
I personally prefer the 7.7; more feel of a tab. 7.0 is small imo for a tab; may aswell go for an oversized phone like the note if looking a 7.0 tab..

This was the seller I purchased my tab from: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/hugosaleshop/
The merchant was very good with handling my request. I'm now on the hunt for a 7.7.

Galaxy S3 USA Release!?

Tittle says it all. I am using a Samsung SGH-T639 (flip phone) and i cant do use it much longer, but at the same time, i need to play my next move smart.
Its either the HTC one S, or wait for the Galaxy S 3. which leads to the question, How much longer after May 3rd will US carrier most likely get the S3?
Please shed some light on this topic, i have not heard of or seen any news or info about the US release.
Remains to be seen, but there is speculation that Samsung might try for a closer release, at least in terms of it following the EU release. Only speculation and, unless something happened today, there isn't really any info on the matter. Would be nice to see them closer in terms of regional releases, as well as seeing the various carriers get them at reasonable time between them.
More information is sure to follow after the official announcement.
nop,its not...........
If it does not release in america at the same time, then you can always get yours off ebay.
I'm in australia got my Gs2 off ebay (UK model)
im here with latest update..
http://www.mobilenapps.com/articles/1891/20120428/galaxy-s3-release-date-specs-exynos-4.htm
Galaxy S3 is releasing May 3 ....
They are announcing the phone on May 3rd not releasing it.
latest rumors have the US version being a dual core. I would bet on this myself.
You could always buy internationally.
Now the Americans know how it feels to have to wait for something. Normally you guys get everything first lol

i got some necessary information here....thanks gys
Samsung sucks!
Im upset the Galaxy S3 wont get the Exynos quad core chip!! I really think this will be a huge blunder for Samsung like how they released the S2 in North America 6 months after its initial release. This sucks! I used to be a fan of Samsung and if T-mobile gets the htc one x I will get that instead!

[Q] Hello! New member with an advice q

Hello,
Let me first start off by introducing myself. I'm Dan and I am in the military currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan. I leave this October to head to Italy as well. I have been following this site for quite a while now as a lurker and finally decided to step out into the open after many late-nights reading posts and articles. (Boy there is a wealth of information on here!) I am not really a developer myself although I do dabble in poking around my devices in terms of software and taking them apart and fixing myself instead of using tech support when it comes to hardware.
ANYway, the reason I am posting here is in regards to wanting to upgrade from my cheap $60 COBY 7" tablet I got during Black Friday sales on Amazon that i use as an e-reader and nothing else since the battery, processor and wi-fi are crap. Since I am in Japan, I can easily get the new Tab 7.7 Plus (SC-01E) for around $230 new. AFAIK, the only difference is that it has an extendable antennae for 1SEG TV, standard 32GB storage, ICS pre-loaded, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 APQ8060 (and therefore unable to make voice calls). I can also have the SIM unlocked at Docomo for around $30.
I am torn though; to get the above model, or wait until I pass through the States and get the Verizon model, or pay a rather large amount of money for the P6800 international model.
Then, the matter of should I even buy the 7.7 at all or just wait until a new 7-8" tablet appears. My needs are basically an excellent screen, expandable memory card slot, a good enough CPU/GPU to watch 1080p HD video (to include .mkv files with subtitles and FLAC audio) as well as output it to a TV, and minor gaming (aka angry birds and bejeweled) and web-browsing use.
Any and all opinions (good or bad) are welcome. Thanks!
**edit* is there any development for the SC-01E as I would like to be rooted in order to enjoy some of the 'better' apps on the play store
Since it doesn't seem to be an urgent purchase wait for new ones to arrive as you won't be switching anytime soon
IMHO... there is no device can match the Super-Amoled screen on Tab 7.7 and for your needs... it can do those without a problem... at least i use my device that way and got no problem with it... but just get the international p6800... our device got less love from developer since it was banned by court [email protected]
Thanks for the replies. Edan, wasn't the p6800 the one banned in Europe and Japan? I.E. the international version?
yup... the one bear the mark GT-P6800= international version...
No tablet can match the 7.7 yet. The screen (despite its low resolution) is simply stunning. This is the reason why most of us have no plans to get a "better" (faster, more modern) tablet.
I have no idea about the development for the 7.7 Plus, but since it's S4-based you'll probably get something (if the bootloader is unlocked at least). The Verizon model has some development here, although it will probably never see an official Jelly Bean release.
Now, what to buy would depend on where you'll use it. The P6800 will work with pretty much any HSPA operator on the planet. The Verizon model will be CDMA and 700MHz-LTE only, so you won't have as much mobile data coverage outside the US. No idea of the bands used on the 7.7 Plus, but it will probably work great on the Japanese network (and possibly not as well on other networks).
Get the 7.7 plus, god its only 230 usd, then go. You cant get cheaper verizon
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't say the 7.7 has a low resolution.
7.7 has a resolution of 1280 x 800 with a ppi of 196
iCrap mini has a resolution of 1024 x 768 with a ppi of 163
And the 7.7 is over a year older! Nothing can touch the 7.7 at the moment. The Docomo tab seems like a great buy. Both the Docomo and the Verizon version cannot make calls or send text.
I thought about getting the Docomo just for the heck of it, but the no phone calls thing is holding me back.
Thanks for all the food for thought.
The phone call thing is slightly holding me back as well but more-so the stagnant (lack of) development for that particular model. I am assuming it cannot be rooted and flashed with CM since the roots were developed for the Exynos processor sets and not the Qualcomm APQ8060? I would like to have JB on it after reading how much better the tabs seem to be but at the most, JB may only be officially released for the p6800 and eventually the LTE model which means there may not even be a ROM for me to flash this model with.
With that said, (if I do get the tab) even though I am not a developer, I am willing to help the cause (with some help for me as well) and see what can be done since I hear CM plays more nice with Qualcom than Exynos. ^_^
JB ver 4.1.2 is already released for P6800 but the current development of CM10.1 for P6800 and P6810 is also quite wonderful....
Well I ended up getting the SC-01E. It was nice since it came with a desk dock, and 16GB mini-SD card to boot. Even got a case and amazing screen protector all for about 245US.
Once I get some time I'll post up some benchmark scores in the thread in general as well as start playing around with it attempting a root possibly. (Still a little too new to risk bricking it yet, lol!)

Looking for Help and suggestions.

Hello,
First a litttle background (skip to the 2nd paragraph for the question): My first experience with Android and XDA came with the Galaxy S5... On AT&T. As you know, its not the most friendly phone when it comes to the development community but thanks to Safestrap, I was at least able to do some tweaking. But, shortly after I bought it, the Note 4 was released and I immediately wanted it... it became my dream phone. But, of course, on AT&T, its locked down just like the S5 (maybe even more so?). I then bought a Tab S 8.4 and had a much better experience with being able to customize the tablet how I wanted. When it came time to upgrade, I was going to buy the Nexus 6 so I could have complete freedom and once my upgrade date came, both AT&T and Best Buy both promptly stopped selling the Nexus 6. So, I decided to just say screw it, and bought the Note 5. While its a fast phone and Touchwiz is night and day better on it than it was on my S5, I really miss my root.
So, here's my question: I have been monitoring the forums and have seen that AT&T users with the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge and the LG G4 have been able to successfully root. Ironically, I almost bought the G$, but bought the Note b/c of my desire for the Note 4. Anyway, if I were to buy a S6 Edge or G4 at Best Buy today, would it come with the stock firmware that is rootable (with Pingpong for the Samsung or flashing with the LG) or will they have been updated to one of the newer un-rootable firmwares? I'm not trying to get into an OEM debate here, I just want the best Android experience possible in my current situation and, unfortunately, that means buying an AT&T phone. I don't know if it matters, but If I buy the G4, it would be the silver H810 as I'd buy the leather back anyway and if I buy the S6Edge, it would be gold version with model number of SM-G925AZDAATT.
Thanks for reading and for any advice you can give!
PS.. There may be other rootable AT&T phones I don't know about and I'm open to them as well but at this point, I'm restricted to buying an AT&T phone through Best Buy. Thanks again!
Go with G4 I might be a little subjective but just start with the removable battery and micro sd card...
There's a thread for this.
