Is it possible to create a nandroid backup and save it to my computer, then format my Sd card
( since I have a 16 Gb one and is getting full and Idk what I have )
then save the nandroid back up to my Sd card and
Restore my phone!!
Will my phone work normal after that?
Will I get all my apps and configuration back?

I personally keep a copy of my Nandroid Backups on my PC (just in case).
The one I didn't keep however was my stock one. Doh
Formatting your SD card won't format system partitions, so unless you mean a backup of a different ROM, there's no point in making a backup and copying it to your computer. They're two completely different storage areas.
Its also worth noting that you can backup to ypur computer, then restore your saved rom to a different Sensatiln should you need to replace yours.

Okay so I seem to be running out of space fairly quickly on my memory card and seems that my memory card has become "bloated' with some data file and folders from apps and games no longer needed.
I want to format my card to start from scratch, but what folders will I need to keep to be able to keep important backups which include origional backup from my stock Vodafone Rom before I went to ARHD 6.2.1.
Easy ones to recognise is titanium backups I've recently done. Any other advice as me trawling though my memory card root folders I don't know.what to look for?

What did you do backups with first? Cwm?
Otherwise just:
install 4ext (4ext.net or market) and make a backup from recovery, transfer it to your pc/laptop, then format sd card in 4ext.

If you're just going to start from scratch, I'd say just keep the titanium backups folder and your clockworkmod folder (That's where the Nandroid backup is).
You'll also obviously want to keep your DCIM folder, assuming you have taken any pictures or videos in there you want.
Lastly you might want to backup some of the folders used by apps with data that you have invested in (ie. games you've played for a long time, etc) onto the computer before you format your card, just in case you'll need those files later.

Hi,
Copy the whole card onto PC.
Save photos, anything that says backup, all cwm/4ext backups, titanium.
If its on your PC, you cannot lose it ..
Format the card on your PC to fat 32
Put your card back in, android will put down any files it needs, restore your valuables

Coming from a Thunderbolt I was very comfortable with ClockworkMod Recovery, I backed up and flashed often through recovery.
On this VZW S3 upon rooting and installing CWMR standard version 5.8.something my backups were only going to the internal SD card and the dates were never right, always saying 1970. The file size seemed about right (1.5 gb) and there were the normal dozen of so in the backup directory.
Out of desire to backup to my external I card I tried the new EZ Recovery app which installed CWMR 6.0.1.0 I believe, the non touch version. This version would backup to the external SD card, but still had the wrong date name for the backup folder. When I browsed that folder it was only 30mb but there was another folder called blobs that was about 1.5 to 2gb.
Is this how version 6 works? I don't have much confidence that this is a good nandroid backup and that I could restore off of it.
Looking for confirmation that this is how it is to work with version 6 and/or any tips or alternatives you can offer. I want to be able to backup and restore off of my external SD card.

That is indeed how version 6 works. As for the dats, those are sadly messed up in general I haven't seen a fix for that, but i also haven't searched for one because i know which ones are my latest and don't keep many of them anyways. As for it not backing up on 5.8 its because you have to have your SD formatted as FAT32 and exFAT (again not sure if 6.0.1.0 changes that because i formatted mine) But i did successfully backup and restore on version 6 and it worked perfectly.

I wiped the card when I first had issues backing up on 5.8. Formatted it with the phone but it still wouldn't give me the backup options. How can you check the formatting?
Wonder how multiple backups work in version 6, does it dump it together in the blobs? Or is is some more intelligent non duplication way of storing multiple backups?

I formatted mine on the computer just to make sure it worked. So no idea how to check it from the phone sorry.
As for multiple backups, i've got a few backups and it always restores fine, so im assuming its got a way of knowing what goes with what.

Are you trying too back up through rom manager? I've given up on that. I do not have an external card, am rooted, using the latest non touch cwr. I usually boot into recovery manually or through rom manager and backup from there. Have the same issues with dates and large size. But happy to report that I go back and forth between cm10, stock, and synergy rom regularly with no problems. Also remember kexec boots 3 times, it's not a bootloop.

I boot into recovery and backup there, if I do it through Rom Manager I get no choice to backup to external SD at all, but I can in version 6 thru recovery.

What flavor of CM10 are you running and can you give me a link to the one you are using? Does Google Now with the cool voice search work well on CM10? Been dragging my feet! Might be ready to take the plunge.
I can't stand the Touchwiz crappy so cm10 was the only choice for me. Apparently the sms/mms not working but it does not effect me since I use Google voice. Very smooth. Google DROID hive forum and look for it there. It's by dhacker.

I was wondering if there is somewhere or someone here in the forums that can clarify how these new back-up files work. I like to back-up my back-ups on drop-box, but now that it is creating all these files do I need to move all of these created files together or just the file with the date and time stamp? I want to flash a new rom but want to make sure my current is backed up correctly on my dropbox before doing so.

Phone formats to sd card to extFat. Fat32 must be done on PC. No recovery supports extFat. Kexec no longer supported by anyone once bootloader was unlocked. Haven't used Clockwork since TBolt days so don't know how Blob files affect Dropbox backup.
There is an option in CWM to turn off the blobs. I prefer to have backups that are stand-alone, so I personally turn this off.
In CWM Recovery 6.0.1.2:
backup and restore > choose backup format > tar
The two options are "dup (default)" and "tar". The "dup" option gives you the blobs folder. The idea is that it saves space when you have multiple backups. The "tar" option seems to work just like you are used to - one folder per backup.
Where does the sms folder goes?? I forgot to back up my sms using smsbackup and restore but then i was able to make a backup on cwm i like to restore my back up but when i hit restore it says md5 mismatch.. but since i was able to make a backup on cwm where i can find the right folder for sms.. cause i would like to copy it on my current rom folder so i can restore it

Having never gotten the rom I was using 100% working I, stupidly, did not set up a full backup. Long story short, things went sour, I can't boot into my rom and I'm hoping I can get some backup help.
What I've done:
Tried everything I can think of to get the rom working
Copied the sd card to my pc
What I would like to do:
Somehow get my installed apps (and hopefully app settings) copied back onto a clean install of the same rom.
There is not enough room to do a nandroid backup 2g free. Is there anything else I can do/can I use the copied sd card as part of a restore?

You can do a nandroid of /data in recovery. But if the problem is in that partition, restoring it will just put you back where you are now.
Does a /data backup do everything I need? I assumed android_secure was required and that's a whole 3 GBs too big.
android_secure is where the apps are stored when you move them to your sdcard. But if you can't back that up, it's academic. /data might save some of your app settings and files.

Because it partitions the storage (stupidly).
If I copy android secure, could I just put it back after a restore, or would that mess with things? Alternately, if there clear files I could delete to make room for the nandroid of android.secure I could do that. Nearly all of my apps are in there, meaning the data backup is a bandaid on a pretty huge cut.

buddy formatting will delete entire data... i wont selectively leave the cwm backup...
erase command is not to so intelligent to leave behind nandroid
Make you backup in external and then format your internal.
This will prevent your nandroid backup to be saved

It depends where you stored your backup. If you have stored the backup in the same location that you format then it's going to get deleted.
Once you have made your backup in NANDroid I highly recommend you move this backup to another location where you can always access it incase the worst happens. I usually place a copy of my backup locally on my network and in a cloud storage. This covers all bases.

Definitely become a huge fan of backing up everything! I just flashed a new ROM and last back up was a week ago.....nothing like learning through trials! :silly:

Hi all, I have a few questions regarding where you store your backup Roms, I am fairly new to this ( duh) , I am running CM on my GS3 ( 10.1.2).
I have a 16gb with another 16gb external storage. I have one backup of stock 4.1.2 JB on my phone and another backup of the Rom I am running.
Do you all usually keep several backups on your phone? And if so where do you usually keep them, on the internal storage or external? Mine are on the internal storage and take up almost 6 gb. I would love to free up space there, just not sure if it's ok to store backups elsewhere, and how I would go about it if there is. Hope this makes sense, I always keep backups but didn't realize just how much room they take up! Once a backup has already been made, can I move it via TWRP to external storage or is this not recommended? Hope this all makes sense...
I used Rom manager and I keep only one Rom backup on my internal storage and everything else is on my external sd card. I also keep a folder in Dropbox with backups.

Also use ROM Manager, I keep 6-10 Nandroid backups on my external SD card & always backup to my PC also. I'm constantly creating & destroying nandroids as I backup before I flash anything new whether a full ROM, new nightly, different kernel or a simple MOD.

I use Dropbox for backups and keep my most recent rom in the internal SD card
Speaking of backups, I just did a nandroid backup via TWRP and forgot to choose compression, so now I have a 4+ gb backup file eating up space on my internal storage. If I transfer it to PC, use windows to zip the folder, and transfer it back, I should then still be able to flash it in recovery just like if I chose compression in the first place, right?
Would be nice to have more than 3gb free space...
I do nightly backups with Titanium Backup, then I use FolderSync to copy everything to my computer before I wake.
I do periodic nandroid backups as image.zip files, rename them to include the date, and sync them with my computer using FolderSync.
I save apks separate from data, and never delete them. I only keep the last few ROM images (probably not more than five copies).

If you just did the backup, delete the backup, enable compression, and re-do it. You'll save time and uncertainty over copying to a computer and back.

Argh, I unfortunately already flashed to cm10.1 or I would have just done a new backup. I've already configured everything and so I'd hate to have to flash stock, make a new backup, then flash back to cm... Would the method I described still work as an alternative?
If you have enough storage, you could backup your current CM ROM, restore the other one, back it up with compression, delete the uncompressed ROM and restore your new CM backup.
Now that you've loaded a different ROM, just move it off the phone, zip it in windows, and leave it on your computer.
If you ever want to restore, unzip it and move it back to your phone.
It'll either work or it won't. You're not going to mess anything up with a bad zip. Just don't use any WinZip proprietary options when you zip.
