[Q] How to root a Samsung GT-S5830 on Ubuntu ? - General Questions and Answers

Hello to all
I am a noob but I do not ask for mercy since I have looked at and appreciated the Noob Video .
I have thouroughly searched the wiki and the forum but I did not find the answer.
I have looked at the topic before posting.
Is there a way to root a Samsung GT-S5830 on Ubuntu ? or on Linux anyway ? This is the only OS I have on my desktop and I do not have a Windows copy.
Thanks and regards
Ciryon

Ace stock froyo can be rooted via superoneclick, thus needs windows, mandatory. But if u already on gingerbread u can just flash a zip file via stock recovery to root it, no need pc/windows whatsoever. Look in ace's dedicated forum

So it is done, I have theorically rooted my phone but I am not sure it worked. I still cannot uninstall stock application I do not want, I am only allowed to uninstall updates but not the apps. How Can i Check I have really rooted it ?

Check if theres superuser app in app drawer. And install root checker from market to see if can request root call to su binary correctly.

Hello
There is a super user app in my app drawer.
I click on it and there is 3 menus I will translate
App, Log and settings
App and log are empty
Setting display several options
I have downloaded Rootcheck basic, it told me I am root.

In the future, if you have to flash your phone via Odin (for example) I suggest the use of a Virtual Machine like VMware or VirtualBox. In my case, i'm running MacOSX and I flashed my phone using Parallels, and it works great.

[Q] Adding third party apps

hello I have a inspire and rooted my phone with bubbys one click root (worked great!) now i want to use non market apps like pdanet I went to settings and checked the unknown sources box but .... now what? how do i download the the non market apps and install them ?
I checked the market and the app is still not there please help
Checking the "install non-market apps" box does not mean that more apps appear in the market. U find the apk file somewhere on the internet and put it on your SD card and then install it using a file manager like astro. I'd tell u how to install it through adb but I'm not proficient in adb.

[Q] How to install .apk files on your Android?

Well, users who are already using Android from a longer time, may not find this thread useful because they may already know the thing described in this thread. I'm posting this thread for new Android Users. New Android Users may not know how to install .apk files in their Android device on SD Card. Just follow the 3 simple steps given below and you'll be able to install any .apk file on your Android:
Step 1. Copy the .apk file to your SD Card.
Step 2. Get Astro File Manager from Android Market.
Step 3. Open the file in Astro File Manager.
Step 4. When the installation is finished, you'll find your app just like any other app in your device.
If you want video referrence, then you can see the video given below:

You forgot to say that you need to check install from non-market resources in app settings. That might be important for a new person to know as well.

That's strange, all stock roms I've ran on my evo, and before that my optimus s have started with it un-checked. Thought it was googles way of pushing us toward their products. Huh.

Why not root your phone?
Ok. Thanks.
what's your opinion:
I want to install a
- a downgraded system with all necessary things (libs etc.)
- one (best) app for one task (like ubuntu you have one mail-app, one browser etc.)
- a goodlooking theme
- fast and smooth
- stable and popular
what are my next steps to "root" my phone? Is there any howto or tutorial to do this in a easy way?
Thanks in advance!

Hey karbre,
in my eyes there are two possibilities:
1) root your stock ROM and uninstall apps and apply a new theme (take care that you are using the right theme version [an odexed one for stock roms])
2) use a custom ROM
Bushido
Thanks Bushido76!
you are a keen user. Can you send me some links where I can find a howto or a step by step tutorial
to root my phone?
Which apps recommends you for installing a Custom ROM
- email
- browsing
- notes/ task
- photos/ videos editing
- calendar
- music/ video player
- office
and which kernel?
Thanks.

Hey karbre,
the fastest way to root your phone is to flash a root-kernel - i.e. the CF-root kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
You just have to download the right verision for your rom and to flash via ODIN.
Most custom roms come with a special set of applications for the most important activities. Some samsung apps are really good - but noone needs all the apps which come with the stock rom.

Hey karbre,
I haven't found the SII on the SuperOneClick compatibility list. That's why it could be better to use S2root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
But I still suggest to flash a custom (root) kernel, because some kernels provide additional functions like overclocking or undervolting.

Hey kabre,
after rooting it is recommended to make a backup of your efs-folder (imei, product code). You can use the ktool from the android market to create an image backup. To be completely sure I always make a simple file backup of this folder too.
I have no experince with z4root on the SII. I think S2root is the more "up to date"-application.

Actually, it should be possible to uninstall system apps without root, but it's a bit annoying:

[TOOL] I9300/I9305 Auto Deodex & Zipalign Tool

All the work to make the Deodexed.zip of your rom is done to your Windows PC.
Open the Deodexer-Tool.zip you have just download.
Extract the Deodexer-Tool folder to your Desktop or anywhere you whant.
Open the folder Deodexer-Tool you just extract and follow option 1 or 2.
You have two option's:
1.) Connect your phone to pc and run the Deodexer_from_phone.bat whait ....... and you will see a Deodexed.zip and zipaligned ready to flash zip.
-----------------------------------
2.) If you have allready dumped odexed rom and you whant to deodex just put all the .apk's and .odex files from your dumped rom system\app to \Deodexer-Tool\Work\app and all the .jar's and the two framework apk's from your dumped rom system\framework to Deodexer-Tool\Work\framework and run the Deodexer_dumped_rom.bat whait ....... and you will see a Deodexed.zip and zipaligned ready to flash zip.
(If you whant an app like SuperSU.apk to be in your rom then add that to Work\app folder before run the Deodexer_dumped_rom.bat).
-----------------------------------

At the option 1 the script will dump and deodex every app you have at that time in your system/app phone folder.
Doesn't matter if is allready deodexed, the script just ignore deodexed .apk's but it will add to the zip at the end.
The option 2 is same but the script doesn't dump anything from your phone. It is only look what you add at the specificate folder's: Deodexer-Tool\Work\app & framework.
Try it and waiting for your news.

Is there a possibility that we can get something to to the zip-align and deodex without having to move files to and from your mobile and windows. Only cause it seems alittle messy for the everyday user loool I mean i would probably be able to do it but i just dont want to miss anything or do something wrong.
Actually I have an Idea I am going to install the Rom you made then just restore my appz what you think that would be the easiest way right?
Thanks Alot.Need this tool very much .

The only think it will be deleted and replaced is the system/app and system/framework.
Non of your app's will be deleted.
Please before do anything make a backup of your rom with CWM so if anything goes wrong you can restore that.

Great work ausdim. I've modified your script slightly since I have tools that can extract the .tar.md5 > system.img > system.ext4.img > app/framework folder.
If you need those tools, you can give me a shoutout too - so that you save your time from flashing the device and adb pull it

It's a great idea. It'll help to keep the OP leaner. You could also come up w/ a small FAQ that's posted on the OP to help cut down on answering repetitive questions. And if someone does ask a question that's already covered, just point them to the FAQ.
May also want to go into some detail about how to run this on the OP. Not everyone is a developer. You'd be amazed at how many people are mail room clerks, secretaries, managers, work in construction or food service. So, their knowledge is not at all on the same level. They just want to personalize their phone or tablet and be on their way w/o having to get a degree from ITT Tech to do it
Thank you for letting me post. I'm sure I'll have a question or 2 more in the near future. Thank you again.
Sorry, not trying to step on anyones toes here. I just came to look for an answer to a small problem I was having

You have posted question in wrong section. You should have posted in general section. Anyway, If you have root access you can manually paste the apk in /system/app directory and give manual permission(-rw-r-r-) for running to force install as system app.
Sometime apps will work this way.
another clickbait scum thing..
nonetheless pls be careful what u post and how u post .
