[Fixed] GPS data loss, free WiFi tether - HTC One S

For those of you that noticed that while using google navigation you get data loss and also when you try to tether your data you get that annoying T-Mobile message about buying the service through T-Mobile I found a solution
Simply add a APN epc.tmobile.com and select it this fixes both issues
Name whatever
APN epc.tmobile.com
Leave the rest alone
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium

Tested it out and it works for me. The wifi that is; I hadn't noticed issues with nav.
This seems odd to me though; if both APN's are seemingly set to the same settings, why does the stock one route through the upsell page, but the created one doesn't? I suppose it is hiding some setting from us originally?

Interesting. This is the same APN already listed and selected by default on my phone. Do I add it again and select as described above to fix the inability to Tether WIFI problem?

Yeah, you just add it again and select it and everything goes fine.
I read something today about T-Mobile is "going to start charging for tethering" which as far as I know is something they always have done, so I don't know if this means they will be angrily seeking out people who tether/hotspot like this, but it's not stopping me, that's for sure.

Good find. Thanks. Working Flawlessly on my tmous one s.

Works
Its amazing that they set that up like that But has anyone done this workaround and still get contacted by t-mobile after the fact? or does it just function on correctly

I tried the workaround and using Chrome and IE browser I get the tmobile page.
When I try firefox it works and NO tmobile page.

I have used this work around to tether to my Touchpad and it works flawlessly. Thanks for finding this.

Nice find but i dont think it should be in the dev section, it should be moved to general.

Works great for me. I suspect the issue is with the APN type in the default APN's. The "hipri" isn't found in any other device that I've come across. Also guys, make sure in your custom APN you fill in the MMSC or your picture messaging won't work. You should use:
http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc

Best Workaround. EVER.

Just tested the APN thing again on my One S and don't work for me and also tried on Galaxy S 3 and it would not let me leave the apn type blank.
When reopened would automatically put in default mms admin

it should work on the One S, but after the update it doesn't seem to work for me. You cannot do the same trick with the GS3. I think the only way to tether with that phone is to root it and freeze the t-mobile tethering manager.

Im on CM10 atm on my HTC one S, tried different radios, different kernels and different roms and changing the APN doesnt let me use my psvita through hotspot, it wont connect to the youtube app or anything like that, cant play cod multiplayer either >.< I used all of these features when I had the 5gb+ tether plan, then I saw that there was a "workaround" and decided to get the unlimited plan, but I cant get it working. 5gb isnt enough for me since I am always on the move and have pandora on, maps, youtube, netflix and other stuff.

[Q] URL access blocked?

I'm new to android and had a friend help me root my inspire 4g, flash a new rom and a new radio. everything works well except for surfing the web on the data network. Apps that pull data work over the network work, I can access my email and the browsers work on wifi. But when I'm on the data network alone, i get an error saying "Access to this URL has been blocked". What could cause this? is it a setting?
I've tried different browsers and many different websites and i get the same thing.
help please...thanks
Just to clarify, he is running Coredroid v3.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=965207) with the recommended radio 26.04.02.17_M2
He also is using a SIM card that used to be in an iPhone, if that effects anything.
If he is using the stock APN, he will need to get on the HSPA+ data plan for it work correctly.
flashing coredroid does nothing with the APN correct? Howcome it worked before the root/rom then?

Actually, it very well may. APN's are stored in the ROM. It also could be that coredroid has a hosts file that is causing the problem, redirecting to localhost. I haven't tried it so I can't say either way.
What APN is listed in the settings?
it seems to be wap.cingular. does that sound right?
That is not the stock Inspire one, that is for non hspa + devices. It shouldn't cause any issues but it may. Search for a thread I started asking for the default stock apn.

wont let me copy them to here cause i havent posted enough
I seem to have fixed it. i found the stock apn settings for the inspire and made a new apn with them and it's working. it's slow cause im on the EDGE network up here in erie pa but whatever...it works! thanks guys

[Q] Help, (Galaxy R) Apps don't work with WiFi, but work fine on 3G/GPRS

Hello,
I was in a different city for a few days.
During the time, I used 3G / Edge for apps / mail.
When I got back, I realised that none of my apps were working with Wifi.
Market was showing "No Connection - Retry"
Mail app showed "connot connect to server"
Tapa talk showed "connection error"
Youtube showed "connection error"
And so on with some other apps (Tunein radio etc)
However, only Web Brower works fine with WiFi
Also, all apps work flawlessly with 3G.
I also noticed, that once I started a download using 3G, & switched to Wifi afterwards, the download completed perfectly with WiFi.
I have a Micromax A70 (Android 2.2.1) & a Galaxy Tab P1000 (android 2.2).
They work fine with the same WiFi connection, so I guess its not a WiFi/Router/ISP issue.
So can any one help with this issue ?
I searched several forums/googled, but got no definite solutions
I tried stopping & clearing cache /data of market app, as well as google framework, but this did not work.
Other Info:
My phone is rooted, CWM installed, using steps found in this forum.
Thanks!!
Use Static IP ?
Ace-ing all tests.
Hi,
1. How to use static IP?
2. Why is a static IP needed. I didn't need it until I left town. My other devices work fine without static IP. Also, I use my phone's Wifi in 4 different locations so a static IP may not be wise. Now it does not work with any Wifi location. Again I repeat Web browser works fine with WiFi.
Friends, please read the question completely, before replying ... no offence meant ... I appreciate your replies.
Thanks!

You could try reflashing the latest stock ROM available for your country, it is probably because of some software bug in the system/system app's settings.
Do update here on the progress.
Hello,
I am using the stock ROM that came with my phone.
I had rooted the phone as described earlier.
I had installed GO launcher.
Anyways I backed up all my apps n data and reinstalled the CWM backed up ROM.
Now all is well again.

Nice to know your R is working again.
It was probably a software bug which was removed when you restored from the backup.
I think you might have set up proxy
From the strange behavior, i can only think of one reason:
Since proxy works only for browsers on android and that too only for WIFI networks, I suppose that is the case. If accessing your wifi network requires a proxy, then you cannot do much about the problem AFAIK. Otherwise, you can go to wifi setting ->tap menu ->click Advanced and clear the proxy and the port.

No GTalk Video chat on LTE

So I noticed today that when on LTE (or even HSPA apparently) you cannot start a gtalk video chat. It pops up a warning telling you to connect to wifi. This is on the AT&T One X. Now that root has been achieved I'm assuming this is something we'll be able to rectify? Anyone have thoughts on this? Obviously my unlocked Galaxy Nexus that I'm using on AT&T has no such restrictions.... but it is HSPA only so I was hoping the performance on LTE would be much better.
**edit** Derp... Forgot to turn wifi off... a custom ROM (or maybe even a root tweak) will defiantly allow V.chat it's just at&t's "our network is overworked and stressed" excuse at work.
Hmmm... Works like a charm between my wifes Gnexus (GSM) and my OneX. I don't use video chat at all and just tested it after I saw this post, maybe its a network issue??

This is how all the AT&T branded phones behave. There are instructions posted on XDA here about how to change the settings for GTalk by toggle a system setting stored in internal database, IIRC. In order to do that, yes, you will need to have the root access.

Here is a hacked google talk:

you need to get an sql editor and change the permission line for talk wifi chat enable. I'm on phone so can't look it up but google or search xda for google talk video wifi only disable
EDIT: back on computer.
go download an SQL editor from the market like "sqlite"
go to com.google.android.gsf -> databases -> gservices.db -> main -> find "gtalk_vc_wifi_only" and change it from "true" to "false"

Easy fix
Here is an easy fix I can confirm works on AT&T (assuming you are rooted).
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS5pbm5vZHJvaWQuZ3RhbGtlbmFibGVyIl0.
I tested video chat on LTE and instead of the popup telling me to connect to wifi the video chat went straight through. Didn't test the performance on LTE, didn't have time but at least it now works.

- work around for tmobile tethering upsell -

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529083
Above is my original post when I first encountered the upsell popup. After contacting T-Mobile, they really had no answer for me as they said I was the first to approach them about it. The rep. checked through his notes and found nothing. He agreed to follow up with me to see if any changes and when he called I suggested my theory. I found that if you have "View desktop pages" checked (in the stock browser app press the menu key and you should see this option), you will recieve this popup. By un-checking that option, you will not receive the popup BUT, now you will more than likely end up on a mobile site rather than the desktop site. I still have found out how to work around having the option selected but not receiving the popup. Any ideas??? Please share!!

that would make sense since t-mobile detects your browser's user agent string to determine if you are wifi tethering. we just have to wait for either chrome to change their UA string or for t-mobile to stop detect wifi tethering like that

If they start blocking people from full web pages then they may have to re-think their approach to charging for tethering!

That would be a deal breaker!!!
Oh for sure! Would those of us at tmo who are on custom rooms still be blocked from full web sites? This is taking it too far! Ridiculous! Come on what else will they do? 2. Delete all of the information from the APN type
3. Reboot Phone

Good suggestion, one caveat, you should be advising folks to back up or at the least, write down the APN info in case they have problems.

Yeah backing up is always a smart thing to do just in case. However there is an option to revert back to default settings when you press the menu so there shouldn't be too much to worry about. Good suggestion nevertheless!

I had tethering working on Sprint via this mod:
add a new entry to the "global" table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0 in the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db file.
Just updated to 4.4.2; re-rooted (via WugFresh toolkit) tried tethering and its not working anymore. Not sure if its related to the 4.4.2 or not.

Thanks, appreciate the help. My issue is different however - the phone seems to start the tethering and I can connect to it through my tablet - but no data seems to flow... can't even run a speedtest on the tablet or load any webpage...
On the T-Mo side, I was afraid that we would lose the tethering with the latest 4.2.2 OTA - and initially, it looked that way. Speedtest would work on download side but "communications issues" on the upload side & unable to finish and show results .... Arrrrrgghhhh.
With two Nexus 5 on hand, it was easy to compare pre- and post- edits, hotspot & speed data, etc. along with comparing the entries in the above mentioned settings.db fields. First, save a coopy of the *.db just in case it is needed - then, added the tether_dun_required and value to 0 as a new entry/line, saved & exit. Reboot device for good measures, and sure enough, it connected by got re-directed to T-Mo's home page ... APN was set to IPv6
Change it to IPv4 and exit, restarted WiFi hotspot and it is good - fast speed and websites loading quickly, etc.
This may, or may not, help out those on Sprint's network - but, worth looking into ...

Hmm, wonder what happened with my config then. I'm in the same boat - stock rooted only. maybe i will try removing the new line in settings.db are re-adding... Right now I can launch hotspot and connect to it from tablet/laptop but no data flows thru the pipe....
I lost my tether after the 4.4.2 update as well. I have a Sprint Nexus 5. My laptop and tablet were able to connect to the hotspot, but no data was coming across.
I looked at the settings.db file and could still see the "tether_dun_required" entry was definitely there. So I decided to replace the settings.db file with a copy I had from before the 4.4.2 update. Rebooted the phone, and magically, tether started working again.
I was curious though to see if I put the post-4.4.2 update settings.db file back, then would I lose my tether? So, once again, I replaced the settings.db file with the post-4.4.2 version, rebooted the phone, and magically, tether still was working! WTF!
The only thing interesting that I noticed during all of this is that every time I replaced the settings.db file on the phone, the corresponding settings.db-journal file would disappear. I don't know much about SQLite, but I wonder if the journal file had some transaction state with the "tether_dun_required" hack removed or not committed.
Anyway, hope this helps.
