So I noticed today that when on LTE (or even HSPA apparently) you cannot start a gtalk video chat. It pops up a warning telling you to connect to wifi. This is on the AT&T One X. Now that root has been achieved I'm assuming this is something we'll be able to rectify? Anyone have thoughts on this? Obviously my unlocked Galaxy Nexus that I'm using on AT&T has no such restrictions.... but it is HSPA only so I was hoping the performance on LTE would be much better.
**edit** Derp... Forgot to turn wifi off... a custom ROM (or maybe even a root tweak) will defiantly allow V.chat it's just at&t's "our network is overworked and stressed" excuse at work.
Hmmm... Works like a charm between my wifes Gnexus (GSM) and my OneX. I don't use video chat at all and just tested it after I saw this post, maybe its a network issue??

So you were on LTE or HSPA (NOT wifi) on your OneX for the video chat?
***To clarify I'm not an idiot xD I did not restart my phone and my wifi did not time(even after 5 min with it off) so after i restarted my phone I started getting the turn on wifi message :/ there is nothing wrong with your phone xD***
I realized right after i posted that wifi was on . Sorry

This is how all the AT&T branded phones behave. There are instructions posted on XDA here about how to change the settings for GTalk by toggle a system setting stored in internal database, IIRC. In order to do that, yes, you will need to have the root access.

Here is a hacked google talk:

I have not tested though...
you need to get an sql editor and change the permission line for talk wifi chat enable. I'm on phone so can't look it up but google or search xda for google talk video wifi only disable
EDIT: back on computer.
go download an SQL editor from the market like "sqlite"
go to com.google.android.gsf -> databases -> gservices.db -> main -> find "gtalk_vc_wifi_only" and change it from "true" to "false"

Easy fix
Here is an easy fix I can confirm works on AT&T (assuming you are rooted).
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS5pbm5vZHJvaWQuZ3RhbGtlbmFibGVyIl0.
I tested video chat on LTE and instead of the popup telling me to connect to wifi the video chat went straight through. Didn't test the performance on LTE, didn't have time but at least it now works.

I've just applied the update for 2.3.6, When tethering either wifi or USB, the 3g icon disappears and i get no connectivity.
What's interesting is that if i use an alternative APN (VPN access point for Telus) I am able to tether without a problem.
I'm suspecting that this is a pre-emptive strike for AT&T who want to charge for tethering.... any ideas anyone?
I am on ATT and lost tethering...
I just spoke with steve.garon who is using CM7 nightlies. He updated his modem to the one included in this update and is able to tether without a problem, also the search bug appears to be dead with this modem.
So for those who are tethering, might be an idea to skip this update and just apply the modem.
As for myself, since i CAN tether through VPN, I might wait it out. It only took them 3 months to fix the search bug, what's another 3 months?
damnit...I'm completely stock and am having the same issue with tethering.

Me too.
Fix for tethering issue in 2.3.6
1) Create new access point, for example “Tethering”
2) Copy all the settings from your primary APN you use for internet access
3) Set APN type to “default, dun”
When you want to tether, select your new APN and then enable hotspot function.
I actually thought I'd modify the original Access Point by adding 'dun' to the list as mentioned by north49. So now I have "default, dun, supl, mms" and it works flawlessly with the original Access Point and tethering.
Edit: I stand corrected. I had to create a complete separate Access Point for it to work.
That's good news. At least there's now a workaround.

Copy libsec-ril.so found in system/vendor/lib from 2.3.4 to the 2.3.6 ROM and tethering may work again...

So.. does anyone have a stock 2.3.4 for Canadian Nexus S that doesn't require Clockwork recovery? I can't seem to downgrade using any of the signed versions I've found. Signature failures etc etc.

Can somebody explain me the technical background, why this fix the bug?
What does ',dun' means?
DUN == Dial Up Networking.
It's a force setting for the phone to use this access point for tethering.
I've applied 2.3.6 and the tethering changes but I have a question... Does Nexus S tethering share the Wi-Fi connection or only the 3G connection?
When I enable 'Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot' it turns off the wifi on my Nexus S and jumps over to 3G.
I don't remember it doing that before... although I only tested it briefly to see if it worked so I didn't pay attention to what network it was actually using. I also don't remember having to select the specific APN for tethering either from my settings (On my Rogers Phone I have 1 APN for internet use and 1 APN for tethering)
Thanks!

Are you on Verizon? I'm surprised you're even getting voice...
If you're using a GSM carrier other than ATT, you'll need to input the correct APN settings. Google ("your carrier" apn settings) and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. Then go to Settings - Wireless and Networks - Mobile Networks - Access Point Names and create a new APN with your carrier's settings

This is strange. I'd probably suggest running the RUU to see if you get data back. This will obviously wipe the device, but will flash the exact same stock, unrooted ROM. I don't have any other good suggestions.
Gingerbread RUU
Froyo RUU
For those of you that noticed that while using google navigation you get data loss and also when you try to tether your data you get that annoying T-Mobile message about buying the service through T-Mobile I found a solution
Simply add a APN epc.tmobile.com and select it this fixes both issues
Name whatever

Leave the rest alone

This seems odd to me though; if both APN's are seemingly set to the same settings, why does the stock one route through the upsell page, but the created one doesn't? I suppose it is hiding some setting from us originally?

I read something today about T-Mobile is "going to start charging for tethering" which as far as I know is something they always have done, so I don't know if this means they will be angrily seeking out people who tether/hotspot like this, but it's not stopping me, that's for sure.
Good find. Thanks. Working Flawlessly on my tmous one s.
Works
Its amazing that they set that up like that But has anyone done this workaround and still get contacted by t-mobile after the fact? or does it just function on correctly

Nice find but i dont think it should be in the dev section, it should be moved to general.
Works great for me. I suspect the issue is with the APN type in the default APN's. The "hipri" isn't found in any other device that I've come across. Also guys, make sure in your custom APN you fill in the MMSC or your picture messaging won't work. You should use:

it should work on the One S, but after the update it doesn't seem to work for me. You cannot do the same trick with the GS3. I think the only way to tether with that phone is to root it and freeze the t-mobile tethering manager.
Im on CM10 atm on my HTC one S, tried different radios, different kernels and different roms and changing the APN doesnt let me use my psvita through hotspot, it wont connect to the youtube app or anything like that, cant play cod multiplayer either >.< I used all of these features when I had the 5gb+ tether plan, then I saw that there was a "workaround" and decided to get the unlimited plan, but I cant get it working. 5gb isnt enough for me since I am always on the move and have pandora on, maps, youtube, netflix and other stuff.

I had tethering working on Sprint via this mod:
add a new entry to the "global" table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0 in the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db file.
Just updated to 4.4.2; re-rooted (via WugFresh toolkit) tried tethering and its not working anymore. Not sure if its related to the 4.4.2 or not.

Thanks, appreciate the help. My issue is different however - the phone seems to start the tethering and I can connect to it through my tablet - but no data seems to flow... can't even run a speedtest on the tablet or load any webpage...
On the T-Mo side, I was afraid that we would lose the tethering with the latest 4.2.2 OTA - and initially, it looked that way. Speedtest would work on download side but "communications issues" on the upload side & unable to finish and show results .... Arrrrrgghhhh.
With two Nexus 5 on hand, it was easy to compare pre- and post- edits, hotspot & speed data, etc. along with comparing the entries in the above mentioned settings.db fields. First, save a coopy of the *.db just in case it is needed - then, added the tether_dun_required and value to 0 as a new entry/line, saved & exit. Reboot device for good measures, and sure enough, it connected by got re-directed to T-Mo's home page ... APN was set to IPv6
Change it to IPv4 and exit, restarted WiFi hotspot and it is good - fast speed and websites loading quickly, etc.
This may, or may not, help out those on Sprint's network - but, worth looking into ...

Hmm, wonder what happened with my config then. I'm in the same boat - stock rooted only. maybe i will try removing the new line in settings.db are re-adding... Right now I can launch hotspot and connect to it from tablet/laptop but no data flows thru the pipe....
I lost my tether after the 4.4.2 update as well. I have a Sprint Nexus 5. My laptop and tablet were able to connect to the hotspot, but no data was coming across.
I looked at the settings.db file and could still see the "tether_dun_required" entry was definitely there. So I decided to replace the settings.db file with a copy I had from before the 4.4.2 update. Rebooted the phone, and magically, tether started working again.
I was curious though to see if I put the post-4.4.2 update settings.db file back, then would I lose my tether? So, once again, I replaced the settings.db file with the post-4.4.2 version, rebooted the phone, and magically, tether still was working! WTF!
The only thing interesting that I noticed during all of this is that every time I replaced the settings.db file on the phone, the corresponding settings.db-journal file would disappear. I don't know much about SQLite, but I wonder if the journal file had some transaction state with the "tether_dun_required" hack removed or not committed.
Anyway, hope this helps.

The Default should be " default, mms"
Add ",dun" to the end of it.
And the finish product should be "default, mms, dun"
Make sure you save your modification. Hope this helps.

Do a search for "LTE"
Look for the instance "LTEFunctionality Test" "com.test.LTEFunctionality"
Once open, look for "LTE APN Settings"
There should be two which you can edit, the first is " APN2 EHRPD internet"
The second is APN2 LTE internet, this is the one you would like to edit.
Scroll down to "APN type" and add the ",dun" and done.
What if its shaded out how can we get it to work then.

Download Shortcut Master (Lite) from the playstore and perform your APN edits from the app.
Unlimited?
So this would be unlimited hotspot on my unlimited network from Sprint? and also I noticed that it wont let me open my sprint app anymore after adding ,dun
My guess this happens due to block the app from tracking your hotspot usage? I have 10GB of hot spot and I used this method then went back to normal settings again without ,dun and restarted my phone the My sprint app opened and well I be damned but it did not track my usage I still have 0 data out of 10GB used! I guess I will just have to disable it when I want to check my activity on the My sprint app, this is awesome!!! :good:
If I'm wrong please let me know

Or you could simply check your activity on the web via PC.
Personally I don't even bother, as it's unlimited. Or, reset the changes and change back whenever you get curious. Either way works

Oh yeah went thru the same thing using this method on the s7 with the unlocked firmware. I couldn't believe it wasn't registering, because I wasn't rooted. It's true though, it works. I would test it jus like you're thinking, by using the hotspot without the mod. It would count the data up while I watched. Then I made these edits, and BOOM! No more data was showing on the hotspot usage on the Sprint site. Didn't have any issues for a year. Then the phone broke [emoji28]

Not working QI5. Hotspot turns on, and I'm able to log in to hotspot, but no data. After turning off hotspot, I have to switch airplane mode on and off to get data back. Weird stuff.
