[Q] sms issues on 4.0.4 - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok I have tried this on a few different 4.0.4 roms and have all had the same problem. When I delete a thread of sms it deletes the messages but still leaves an empty thread. How can I fix this it is getting anoying. I have a bunch of unwanted sms threads.

It could be your phone. Some old phones tend to have that. Bit if its new. Back up using SMS back up and restore app than restore your phone. Restore than try it again.

Text messages deleting on their own

I don't know if this is a bug in Android or HTC Sense, but on my old Desire all my texts would randomly delete themselves randomly, no where to be found. I've been using my new Inspire for a week now and had restored my texts from my old desire with MyBackup Pro on it. When I woke up this morning again all my new text from the past week have deleted themselves. This is very annoying, I don't have the auto text delete feature on so this shouldn't be happening. I wrote to HTC on this issue, and they just responded with, this is a known issue and as of right now there is no way to get your texts back, then they recommend using a backup program, which I do. My problem is with MyBackup Pro when I restore my MMS's they do not show up in my text threads and there is no where to open them which kinda stinks. I just don't know how htc/google can't fix something as important and basic as making your texts not disappear.
i would try a 3rd party messaging application, such as handcent.
All I use is handcent. The problem is if they are deleted from the stock app they will also be deleted from handcent.
digging this up a bit, found it via googling.
anyways, I'm seeing the same thing on my Thinderbolt and so is my sister on hers. I have a very strong suspicion that this is a bug in Sense as I never had this issue on my other phones running AOSP. Can't wait for AOSP for the T-bolt to be done!

[Q] TweakStock TitaniumBackup not restoring data?

So I just installed TweakStock and I would comment on how awesome it is but I'm more concerned about the fact that Titanium won't restore the data for my Go SMS Pro/PowerAmp(so i lost all my texts and my music playlists). The weird thing is, it restored data for most apps but theres a select few that just wont restore. It's become very problematic and I'm hoping it's not just me.
I'm not familiar with Go SMS Pro, but if it's like ChompSMS and some other replacement apps, it still uses the phone's built in SMS database, and not its own. If so, SMS data is not backed up with app data. Chomp has a backup function of its own. Go may have something similar.

Still isnt explaining why PowerAmp wasnt backed up :/
Did you back up all before flashing?

Yeh, I chose the option to back up all apps with modified data. If you check the date the last backup was made it says 12/25/11 so I'm sure everything was backed up correctly but it just doesn't want to restore the data :[
Try flashing a different rom and seeing if it does the same thing. If it does, it just didn't back up your data.

ill try that...
So I tried flashing TweakStock in Odin this time(originally did it with CWM, coming from Infinity) and it didnt work, my messages/playlists still wouldnt restore... So I flashed back to the original ROM i was on, EXT4 non-TSM Infinity and alas, to no avail. I tried 3 different versions of Titanium Backup, all 3 with and without Pro just to be sure(there were problems with Pro on Infinity), i tried restoring it manually and i tried batch restoring and of course i can't get my messages back. That's the biggest loss, I had thousands of text messages that are apparently gone forever. Makes me want to throw this phone at a wall :/ oh well

Did you make a CWM backup before you flashed Tweakstock? I suspect it may be too late for the text messages. You may want to try to install Go SMS on a blank ROM, send some texts, manually create a backup with Titanium, flash a blank ROM, and try to manually restore the backup to see if it is even possible using Titanium. My standard procedure to to create a backup in CWM before change ROMs. I use version 4.0.1.4. I know there are several apps that can back up texts. I suggest trying to use one to see if it is capable of backing up texts from Go SMS if you find that Titanium is not capable of backing up the texts.
Sorry to hear about the restore issues. There have been one or two instances reported where titanium backup didnt play nice when restoring certain apps data. At this point it seems as if it's a TiBu issue - I've even had problems with restoring app data on stock ep4d. If there is app data I'm interested in keeping, I've found more success with doing a CWM backup prior to flashing and then using the advanced restore > data feature.
I have Titanium Backup pro and am unable to restore apps. It scrolls across but does not actually install any of my apps. I have had the issue across 2 different Charges and 3 different roms.
Not sure what causes it, but the only way I have been able to resolve is by going back to the old manual install option that makes you confirm each APK before installing.

This ^^
When I first switched from froyo to gingerbread (I think I didn't switch until EP3H) thats what I had to do. The batch restore would sort of work on some apps, but it would often freeze up while doing so and require a restart to the process. I have become lazy since then and tend to cwm advanced restore data, especially if Im switching around on things using the same base build.
since when does TB back up text messages? I have never seen it
For whats it's worth I had no problems restoring all data with tweakstock and tb.
I've had no problems either. I had issues with EP3, and I had issues with Infinity, but not with stock EP4 or TweakStock

Not with the stock messaging app. It MAY back up if you use a 3rd party app if messages are saved as app data.
I had this problem several times (TiBu just breezing through the restore without actually restoring). Usually, I updated SU, then restarted my phone, then trying again. Maybe you could try flashing imoseyon's kernel, installing better busybox (Terminal -> su -> install_bb), etc and trying again. I always get it to work eventually.

I don't use a 3rd party sms/mms and I always get mine back. I make sure to backup and restore [SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage and [SMS/MMS PREFS]Messaging.

I back up the Dialer Storage every time, and that takes care of my messages (both text and MMS). I haven't backed up (or noticed, for that matter) the Messaging item. I'll try backing that up as well and see what else it gets me.
One other thing I have used is a program called SMS Backup & Restore (from the market). This worked well, although it can't back up your MMS messages. If you're the kind that likes to see your call history as well, they also have a sister program that will back up your entire call log.
I would still prefer to have Titanium back up my messages, not just because of the added MMS backups, but because the backup and restore become part of your batch process.

[Q] [ICS] Wrong SMS being deleted

Hi!
On my Nexus S (i9023) I'm having the problem, that wrong SMS are deleted.
This happens on stock ROM as well as on CM9.
In example I get a message from my voice-mail telling me that s.o. called me. I read the message, then tap and hold it to delete it. And what happens? An SMS above (i.e. 2 above) is deleted instead! If I delete it again, it works.
I really have lost lots of SMS this way... Anyone else who has this bug? And how can I work around that?
..
Have just tried it on my NS [i9020a] running the latest CM9 version and haven't got any issues with deleting the wrong SMS messages. Sorry that I can't be of more help.
I didn't try to delete complete threads yet, so I can't say.
Maybe it's because I always restore my old SMS using SBS Backup + after flashing a new ROM. Perhaps it messes up the SMS database?! So for now I've simply deleted all of my SMS and will see what happens.
This has happened to me once but I actually deleted a message only once .
I usually delete by thread.

[Q] One contact's message thread won't open. Stock message app

Ever since the ICS upgrade, one contact's message thread refuses to open and is stuck on "O Loading" with that little circle revolving.
I downloaded go sms pro before and I was able to access his thread through that and the message count wasn't over the maximum limit per contact. I've since gone back to the stock app as he's out of the country and it's faster than go sms pro but he recently txted me and caused the problem to occur with other contacts (though a reset of the phone solves their issue)
Does anyone have a solution and failing that, advice? I should say right now that deleting his message thread is the last resort.

You could try to backup your messages (you can find some apps for that in the market), then delete all your contacts, and afterwards restore them again~
Though no idea if it will work :/

Aye I could try it with a contact whose messages I don't mind losing and seeing if that works, thanks for the tip!
You can also use Google Voice, and have it copy all the messages to your Gmail account.

So I started backing up and restoring and I was able to open all contacts' threads. The backup never fully restores all messages though and I have to keep hitting "restore" so that it'll restore them all up to the present day. Don't know why it's doing it this way.
Just now I've checked and that one contact won't open again. What I might do is try and restore all to the present, delete loads of messages I don't want, and backup this new message history.
I know this is most likely far too late but I was having the same problems and found this thread while trying to sort it and hope it will help anyone else in future who has the same problems. I tried backing up and restoring (Using both the default and sms back-up and restore) deleting the thread and restoring, eventually I solved it by installing handscent, deleting the messages sent/received back to when the problem started in that thread and a few before, then went in settings, apps, then all, messages cleared the cache, restarted and it is sorted!!

Yeah it never resolved itself but I love the customisation of go sms pro so much that I don't mind anymore. Pity go sms pro crashes every so often and I think it slows the phone down.
I was going to start a new thread but see that this is the same problem I have.
I have a mt4gs (Doubleshot) and the problem described in this thread has happened twice. Both times i was receiving a text message and did something else with the phone at the same moment, and it seems to have jammed up the receipt of that text. The first time, i sent a text to the person at the same moment i received one. The second time, i locked the screen at the moment one arrived. Now that thread never loads, and loading other threads or contacts takes much longer than it should. In fact, i don't think contacts would ever load if i were willing to wait forever.
The first time I backed up the texts, reset the device, and restored, and everything worked fine, but that's a really time-consuming process and it seems like a ridiculous workaround for some broken buffer or queue in Android messaging.
It seems that there must be a direct fix for this. If it's easy enough to break messaging that it has happened to me twice, it must be a fairly common problem. But a search has turned up nothing but people saying there are too many messages or to use an alternative app for messaging. That's (1) incorrect and (2) again an ugly workaround for a problem with core functionality.

VZ S3 - Liquid Smooth - cannot change TXT ringtone

I just noticed that I cannot change the txt (Messaging) ringtone. It seems to be stuck on one called Pyxis. Thus far, I've cleared cache etc on app and used Titanium to restore a previous version but I might have restored the the same version from my backup... with no success.
>>(UPDATE) I just found that if I change the phone ringtone it changes the txt ringtone to the same thing but still cannot change the txt ringtone separately.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi. I realize this thread is from a few weeks ago, so I don't know if you've figured it out already, but there's a few things that come to mind. First is, under "volumes" uncheck the link system and ringtone volumes". Then, under "system" look at the default notification sound... there you should be able to change the sound. I use liquid 2.10, and for me it works flawlessly. I've read a lot here about people having problems running 4.3 roms but I've been lucky I guess. Well, first time I ran into a problem as I used titanium to restore apps and data (caught in boot loop) and I was told that there's the problem with apps from 4.2 to 4.3. So after restoring my nandroid I used helium to selectively backup and restore app data, not a problem since. Also, the flash method is unusual to me. Supposed to wipe, rewipe everything, then flash the Rom, boot up, set up phone (everything but Google apps), then power off, boot back into recovery and flash gapps separately. I haven't run into anything not working. I have a different ringtone for calls and a separate sound for notifications. You probably know all this stuff already, but I'm only trying to describe what I did and how it works for me.
