I was using my rogers HTC one X and was supprised to recently notice that i only have 688mb of total ram when using cpuz for android... also when i go into running apps, the sum of running and free ram space is 688mb. it should be 1gb. is mine a defective phone?
unfortunately my phone is the same, when they say 1gb, its just an estimation, you dont actually get 1000mb, you get either a bit less or a bit more i cant remember. As for how much RAM your phone is using, HTC is generally known for having very boaty software and even though sense 4.0 is supposed to be very lightweight, it doesnt seem to be :/ try getting a taskmanager app from google play, it may be able to help keep some of those pesky consuming apps closed though
Some of the 1GB is carved out for display address space and other drivers/hardware. Yes, it has 1GB, but not all of it's available to the OS for program execution, same as a desktop machine
I also have 688

A HD screen is bound to use more graphics memory than any SD screen. The missing RAM is reserved and used by GPU.
welcome to operating systems and hardware integration 101......how else did you expect to have pretty stuff drawn on the screen? magic?
ok thanks everyone. was unsure why they don't mention that there is memory allocated for the gpu in cpuz. thought total ram should say 1gb, like on a computer. makes sense though
I have this problem too
I have a ATT HTC One X

why is it every time a new device comes out we have threads like this? has anyone actually researched this before they come here and fire up a thread? im guessing not.

no. your phone physically has 1GB of RAM. end of story.
dont forget comparing an international one x and an att one x is completely retarded....they are DIFFERENT PHONES with DIFFERENT PROCESSORS AND GPUS.....

Do NOT do this! If you're going to use something to manage tasks, use a manual task killer, not an automated one. You will see a loss in performance with little to no increase in battery life. There have been lots of tests done regarding this here at XDA.
Also; Why are you people so worried about using your 1gb of ram? If it's there, why not use it? Worry about memory management when you're regularly running out.
Scooby Doo and the case of the missing RAM..... To the Mystery Machine gang!!
I do find it odd that the tegra 3 version was able to keep all 1gb though. Must be a similar design to the xbox 360 where it is dynamically shared between gpu and cpu. You would think the s4 would have the same ability...
There were a thousand posts back when the captivate came out wondering the same thing about its ram. Advertised as 512mb but only ~300mb in reality. (latest roms have 387 though) In that case a bunch of ram was reserved for the GPU and 720p video encoding/decoding. Probably the same situation here as others have said.

My HOX reports a total of 672Mb of Ram in task manager ,while it supposed to be 1Gb
I had a G SII before and i always had over 500Mb free
Now i have this phone its always below 200Mb using cleanrom 2.5
It makes me skittish because i used to have a Samsung Fascinate and when it dropped below 100Mb free it started having issues
Is there a trick to get the full advertised 1Gb like i had on the SII ???
The rest of the ram is reserved for system and gpu.
here we go again....
It's getting really old, we need to just link ahs(insert number) forums, when the HOX gets compared to then.

It is just because i did not see this problem with the Galaxy SII and this phone always runs low on memory imho
I just expected that as this has 1Gb memory like the SII it would have atleast the same memory free
forgive me for my noob question

I'm curious - how much free RAM are people typically seeing on ROMs that aren't based on Sense (CM9, AKOP, MiUi, etc.)? Also, do you have the same amount of "visible" RAM (ie, 672 MB), or do you see the full gig the phone has?
I feel like even with something relatively light like "CleanROM DE", I'm lucky if I see more than 150 MB free. Usually it's between 100 and 150, which just seems odd given that the phone theoretically has a gig of RAM, and it's hard to imagine I'm using that much. I realize it's going to take up a bit more RAM because I keep both Apex Launcher and WidgetLocker in memory, but I figured even still I would have ample RAM to play with.
Not really a big deal - just curious what other people are seeing. Thanks!

You will never see the full amount of ram the phone has. Everything that is reserved by the kernel for video and other things are subtracted from the total.

Like most Linux based OS the kernel will make use of whatever free ram is there for caching and recent apps. You will never run out of memory in theory as items in memory will be paged when the memory is needed. For this reason as long as you're not experiencing issues you shouldn't care about free memory.
That said free memory WILL impact multitasking so the more free memory the better chance things won't get killed in the background

Okay, thanks During the initial multitasking discussion, I thought I remembered people with the international One X saying they saw the full gig when they checked their task manager.
I'm using CM9. I see about 250 free RAM with all my apps installed with "everyday" usage. If I wanted I think I could get to 350ish while not using any social networking stuff and things like that. But the phone is plenty fast on CM9. Give it a shot. Multi tasking is much better than Sense, and the speed is great. Love CM9/AOKP.
I am on CleanROM SE and I usually have 250 MB free, give or take. I used autostarts to prevent stuff from running on its own which could be why I have more free RAM than you. Even the non Sense ROMs we have right now still have Sense kernels so I'd imagine they still handle memory for the most part the same as Sense ROMs.

Not for nothing but I'm stock, on ver 1.85 and rooted but not using anything to manage memory and things. I'm seeing 214MB right now. I'll see anywhere between 240MB to around 100MB depending on my usage. It was much worse on 1.73 - I'd only see 175MB or soon right after a reboot!
- Edit -
Just checked again and I see it jumping from around 220 to 250-something.

For me it really depends a lot on what launcher I use as well as what rom. On stock rom with the Sense launcher, I'd have 120-150ish free but using Apex or Launcher 7 I'd have 200MB+ free. I've been running CleanROM 3.0 with Launcher 7 and I've seen over 300MB free several times and usually stay well above 200MB free depending on usage.
Depends. I'm usually between 300 and 250 mb in terms of free ram.
I have stock ROM but heavily desensed based on my preferences. I normally have 325 mb free RAM.

I have a personal version of AOKP running and I have 372mb free at boot.
FYI, if you want to see free ram, go to adb shell and type "free"
Oh if were talking about boot I have about 370 maybe a little more as well. I checked my free ram mid day after 10 hours use and not closing anything lol.
When I first installed cleanrom 2.6 se I got 350 mbytes free. Now that I use the phone I get anywhere from 150 to 250

Should I make this trade? I was thinking about use Atrix webtop + his docks, but I already have an iPad 3 which makes kind dull have Atrix docks, cause I can perform everything better on the iPad.
So I was thinking, should I trade my LG O3D for the Atrix? Or wait and see if O3D gets ICS and so on...?
Im confused, becase O3D have the 3D features (ofc), radio FM (which I like it so much) and dual channel RAM that I though it a bit faster than Atrix.
On the other hand Atrix has their custom roms on JB already, good docks (which I dont know if im gonna buy it, its so expensive in my country) and more internal memory.
What you guys think?
Think about this 1st are you trading phones just to have JB? Or just because you're actually just tired of LG?

I don't wanna stuck forever on 2.3, because before my O3D, I was with a Moto Milestone 1 and it already have 2.3.
So Im really temped to try something new, but there so many questions on my mind, if it really worth trading.

well if i was in your situation i'd do my research (carefully) on the particular phone i want to trade my o3d for.... like read through the motorola atrix forum on here... read what others are saying by that phone, ask questions (if the question you have isn't posted) read to see how difficult it would be to root, upgrade etc. that way you'll know if that's truly the phone you want to trade to.
Hope this helps :good:
The Atrix is rather laggy even on custom roms. I had my friend's for a while, it heated up very quickly when using the Webtop and it was quite slow then. Besides, it won't be getting official ICS either.

My friend has a lot of problems with his Atrix.
Automatic reboots, ****ty signal, calls end randomly, stuff like that.
He sent it to Motorola 3 times already, and when they sent it back it never really got better.
And besides that, it won't get official ICS either.

I was going to buy the Atrix, but I chose the O3D over it because of the screen, although Atrix's is qhd, it's pentile. The colors are greyish, and O3D's is IPS, much brighter and colorful. But Atrix's battery life is way longer, while O3D's isn't even decent, But still, I still choose O3D over Atrix.
Im going to keep my optimus anyway, I only uses it for basic tasks, our phone is dual 512mb RAM ou dual 256ram?

Just a quick word: I will keep my P920 as this is a really fantastic community. Although we don't have ICS yet, we have great developers. We have true DualBoot (and I'm sure there will be a nice interface soon), we have OC-Kernel, our developers are trying to port a leaked ICS... And lots of more. Thanks to all...
Gesendet von meinem LG P920 mit Tapatalk. Rom is ThiaiZ O3D 2.8 with Promethius-Kernel 1.5
Helpful tread.. i had a same dilemma and decide to stick with O3D.. only + for Atrix is the battery and nothin else i believe..
ps. this is my first post on xda...
Well, it all depends on your needs, I think.
I just exchanged a Motorola Milestone 1 for a O3D Max. The feature I want the most is the 3D Camera, to take pics and make movies, and all I wanted was a little more RAM (now I have 1GB, that's fine for me). Ofc I miss the amazing Google apps availabe for ICS and JB, but that doesn't count that much when I think that probably a year from now there will be a new GApps pack incompatible with ICS and JB, and I would get in the same situation I was. That's not what I want. The 3D features will remain the same for more years than the GApps, I think. So it weighted more for me.
If you don't use and don't care with 3D, go for another phone, not Atrix. It is a little old already, Motorola already dropped it's support for the webtop and lapdock and no official ICS or JB. So I'd suggest you get another phone, maybe a Sony from it's newest, that are beautifully designed, decent specs and probably will get more updates.
That's only my humble opinion, ofc. Good luck on your trade.
EDIT: Well now I'm finding sites that say 1.5ghz is what it's supposed to have. I've even watched youtube videos with reviews saying it has a 1.2ghz... sheesh... oh well glad it has a 1.5...
I had an LG Thrill that just went out on me. I decided to turn in the insurance and get a new one. They actually replaced the phone with a LG Escape. After looking around for a while all the sites I went to showed the Escape as having a dual-core 1.2ghz processor. Which was nice to know.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But after rooting the phone and looking in many different benchmark and CPU apps I noticed that my phone had a dual-core 1.5ghz processor in it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I am wondering is, anyone else out there notice this on their phone? Did I just get lucky or has LG changed it's specs??? I dunno if you have an LG Escape please post here and let me know.
Don't really have a direct answer for you, but I will say it is possible. The Samsung Captivate Glide was being marketed as a 1 Ghz Dual Core but was actually 1.2 Ghz Dual Core.
Another thing is it appears there's no LED Flash but LG's site claims it has it. So yay or nay on the flash?
Also, I am looking into getting one. I love the look of the form factor and build quality. Do you reccomend it?
Edit: Now that I think about it, they did the same thing with the Pantech Burst. It was marketed as 1.2 Ghz Dual Core but was 1.5 Ghz Dual Core. I sense a pattern. lol
Sent from my MB886 using xda app-developers app
Well there is no flash on the camera which I don't like and it doesn't take the best of pictures but, it isn't the worst either imo. The phone itself is pretty snappy, I experience no lag and calls sound great. It has ICS 4.0.4 on it which also helps. There isn't a community for it right now and doesn't seem to be very popular so if you are into custom recoveries and roms it's not possible as of yet.
The backplate is VERY flimsy, you have to be careful when removing it as it is extremely thin.
In a nutshell,
Pros:
Running ICS
Nice design, and lightweight
Decent specs for the price
Call quality is great
Has 4G LTE, NFC
Good Battery
Cons:
No Flash
Mediocre Camera
No ROMS or custom recovery
No HDMI out
No Auto brightness
Flimsy Backplate
Can't complain too much about the phone for how much it costs it is a good deal.
I suppose I can live without flash (though its odd they didnt make it with flash) and the lower quality camera. Not a big picture guy. But no hdmi and no custom roms/recoveries does suck.
It just takes some time. I see it has somewhat of a root method. I say thats enough to deserve its own section. But a locked bootloader doesn't leave much room for development.
I'm an Atrix HD user and thats pretty much where we're at. Root, Locked Bootloader, Stand Still. The one good thing is we know Android 4.1 is on the way officially. If LG announced Jellybean for the Escape I'd jump ship.
Sent from my MB886 using xda app-developers app
Yeah not really sure if JB will be released for this phone or not. They left out the flash and hdmi and all that in order to give the phone the specs it has at a low price. They cut corners here and there to give better performance. Personally I would have paid the extra 5 bucks for a flash haha
You are right, as of now all we have is the v10f KDZ and download mode in case of semi brick and a generic root method that isn't confirmed to work on the updated v10f firmware.
Another point... The LG ICS isn't so bad, they didn't mess with too much like they did in Froyo and GB and it is nice and quick. So honestly, stock ROM is fine for me if nothing comes along and with root I can remove bloat, root explorer, titanium backup etc, I would say I am pacified, not happy
EDIT: OK v10f is root able just got confirmation if you go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31963526 and download wkparks root script v1.2 it will work to root.
Yeah. I don't think adding a flash would have cost em too much more. Definitely wouldn't have changed where it stands as a "mid range" smartphone.
And really? Thats great. I didnt know there was a way to fix a soft brick yet. Its hard to find the info without a designated section. Xda needs to come on with that. lol
And yeah. I agree. The new LG Optimus UI looks alot more polished than in older android builds. I was skeptical of it on the Escape at first. I love that on the Optimus G you can have 5 icons in the dock, change the clock on the lock screen, and change the transition effect on the home screens. Most reviewers didn't touch that subject but I finally found one that did and that made my decision easy.
So, with that said, I look to make the jump to the LG Escape within the week. And hopefully the one I get will be 1.5 Ghz Dual Core.
Btw, you mentioned you can remove bloat? I assume you freeze it rather than uninstall. Right? I hear the Escape and Optimus G have a new thing called LG Lockout where they lock you out of the phone if a file is missing such as uninstalling.
Sent from my MB886 using xda app-developers app
I haven't really removed much of anything yet, I will see what's up and post a list of things you can safely delete in the thread I'm making here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33752762
I post anything I find there and would encourage you and everyone else with the Escape to do the same until we get a dedicated forum.
Alright man. I appreciate all the info and hopefully more people will get passed the lack of flash and pick one up so this phone can really take off.

I believe it, I have this phone and it got a 1494 on geekbench which is higher than the SGS3 gets. I just wish there was some way to root this phone so I could remove the AT&T bloatware and get some nice tools. The camera is horrendous, just really reallly bad. I almost dont use it even though I love instagram. Hey I got it for free, it has LTE, its reasonably light, it has a replaceable battery, but only 4gb of space. It does have SD card slot, which is nice but I havent been able to install any apps to it even though I changed the default install location to 2 using adb tools, it errors out when I try to install any new apps after that.
I get the same information showing 1.5 ghz when I check my CPU with that app.
I am looking at both the HOX and the Skyrocket (aka Samsung S II LTE on Rogers). From what I've read, despite having similar specs, the HOX is superior. The obvious limitation is the lack of expandability. While for *most* users this wouldn't be much of an issue (use that Dropbox space!), I have my phones loaded with tons of medical references. Right now, I have ~7 GB of apps on my old HTC Sensation 4G. So, I'd like an opinion as to whether you think the HOX is a practical choice. I'd rather take a hit on performance than sacrifice apps!
Edit: When I say ~7 GB of apps, I do mean the apk + its data, not just apks only. Also, I'm definitely rooting whatever phone I get. I'm using AOKP on my Sensation right now and will probably do the same with the new one.
I have the skyrocket and the hoxl my skyrocket is half the phone the hoxl is if u need storage can't u get a 32gb version of hoxl?

Rogers doesn't carry the 32 GB version, and I can't afford to buy one elsewhere.
This doesn't answer my question, though. As I said, I'd rather suffer some small annoyances than be unable to keep my vital references!
It's all up to you man... If the space is really that much of a bother get the skyrocket end of story

only you know what you can/can't live without. if your medical stuff requires more space than the phone has and you can't afford the 32gb version, then your decision has been made for you. I came to the HOX from Sensation and have managed just fine, but we all have different needs I guess.....
One thing about that picture I posted, I'm pretty sure 4 gbytes is taken up by "other" in the apps partition... Its reserved so you can't use it.
