Well I am planning to get an android phone. Since I am a student I don't really need off the shelve and out of box multicore processor or some gimmicky stuff that adds to the price, what I am looking for is -
1. Q: Budget?
A: 15-20k INR ( ~$300-~$400)
2. Q: Preferred Form Factor(flip, bar, slider)?
A: Bar
3. Q: Preferred display type?
A: TFT / LED / AMOLED
4. Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them.
A: Sony , HTC (except One V)
5. Q: Preferred input method (Touchscreen, QWERTY, etc.)?
A: Touchscreen
6. Q: Camera required or not? If required, please specify type like front camera/flash/etc.
A: Required at least 5MP camera. Flash. With better sensors.
7. Q: Preferred operating system? (Android, Symbian, iOS, Windows Phone etc).
A: Android 2.3 minimum with upgrade to 4.0 official.
8. Q: Preferred connectivity options? (3G, Wifi, Edge etc).
A: 3G. / Wifi/ GPS/ Bluetooth
9. Q: What is your intended use for this phone(internet, camera, multimedia, mails, etc)?
A: Music, Sports - Tracker, Reading , Application development.
10. Q: Any other requirements?
A: Don't require dual sim/require dual sim/etc.
11. Q: If you have already considered a phone then please mention the model.
A: Sony Xperial Sola, Xperia Neo V .
Good looking with ample processing power.
Modding support.
More than fast web browsing.
Music and videos
Sports Tracker heavy usage
NOte - The most important thing that I want is MIUI / CM Mod support, since Xperia Sola is yet to be released by 22nd May in India, should I get the device ? or vouch for some older modle ? How well can I expect developer support specially MIUI rom ? I know its a bit to early to expect developer support but whats the developer take on SOLA ?
Those are the only primary need that I have, if the phone can render pdf that will be beneficial but i don't like sluggish rendering. I am buying the phone for learning purpose (droid ecosystem) and development of apps.
I dont have ample money in my hand nor I want a high end phone. My current phone Motorola WX260 (999 INR bucks) serves me good. have no real contrainst for screen size but it shouldn't be too big to carry.
Budget is max $400 that I can arrange. Will be good if I get some great deal online with some coupons.
Other than that I don't know what to expect. Not particularly looking for good cam and all, just more than decent music and web support with ample processing power.
That should suffice I guess , please do suggest me a decent phone.
Regards

Hey ya,
I own a Samsung Omnia for about 3 weeks and the restrictions of this OS make me more and more consider changing to Android or Symbian ^3 (my current 2nd phone Nokia 5800 is not exactly what you call technically up to date, but all in all i find it definitely much better than the Omnia!!).
This are my personal points of criticism:
1. As always I want to read some news lying in the bed at night. The large screen and the pretty fast browser makes it a pleasing experience, but my eyes nearly start hurting because of the brightness I have already set to the minimum. There isn't even a registry hack out there to fix it. I tried myself to jerk around a little with the registry but the changes had no effect....
2. I am in an unknown city and need to find a filling station ASAP so I type in "filling station [name of the city]" in bing maps > No results
Well, so I look for a filling station like in the good old days.. by serching it offline.
3. I wanna place the WLAN Wizard on the homescreen just like with my 5800. Mission Impossible.
4. I wanna assort the immensity of apps by categories in order to keep the overview. Mission Impossible.
5. I wanna use the Omnia as a WLAN hot spot just like with my dated 5800. Mission Impossible.
6. I wanna pair the Omnia with a Bluetooth Keyboard. Incompatible.
7. I wanna PAUSE the camcorder, recording a video. Impossible!!
8. I wanna skip a video or mp3 by touching the timline. Impossible.
9. I wanna open the bookmarks-menue when the browser is in landscape mode. Impossible.
10. I wanna launch some apps that promise to make the UI more flexible (like "advanced settings" or the registry editror") ~> revoked by Microsoft. Please uninstall.
I know that there are even more restrictions (not possible to set a ringtone, no BT file transfer etc.).
Regarding all these defects I feel like Microsoft wants to sh1t their customers.
WP7 is expensive and so damn unflexible.
Now the questions:
1. Do you think that there'll ever be a registry hack to change the screen brightness?
2. Might it be possible to install Android on WP7 Phones some day?
3. Will MS bring the HID-Profile with an update?
greets
1. Changing screen brightness is something I'm sure M-soft will address eventually.
2. It is highly unlikely especially on non-HTC devices. It's obvious what you want in a phone is android and you should've looked into the device much more thoroughly before making your purchase. WP7 is not the OS for everyone just like any other OS.
3. HID profile is unlikely to be fully integrated due to the fact that it typically allows too much file access and because they want it to sync strictly over zune it is unlikely that they will be fully integrating it though I would not be shocked to see microsoft exclusive Wireless devices as they have done with the Xbox.
Hello,
I am an Industrial designer and part of implementing a product is some good groundwork. Therefor i am doing research regarding functionalities of current tablets and user needs,
I am hoping to get some inside information on XDA from some veteran tableteers. I consider you guys as early adopters and that is excactly what my target group is
I am working for a client who which uses the keywords; simplify, iconic, bold, rebels. There current portfolio consists of a phone with only one function; calling. The phone is therefor cheap, but it also make a statement 'look how cool i am with this simple phone'.
I want to design the next product for that company, in my case a tablet. To fit the current product portfolio the tablet needs to be as iconic as the phone. So simplifing everything to the basic needs of users, therefor it also makes a statement.
Products which are currently 'on the market' which are some inspiration for me are;
Wacom inkling
Sorry cant post links yet..
Noteslate(not yet on the market)
Sorry cant post links yet..
Boogie board
Sorry cant post links yet..
Part of being iconic and making a statement in my POV is bringing back the blackboard feeling with the squeeky finger due to the chalk. Combining the 'paper feel' with electronics; this is also what the company prefers.
first mock-up(excuse me for the quality)
Sorry cant post links yet..
I think the main feature of this tablet will be notetaking and drawing, including a mail service and maby an agenda. You can add or subtract functions. The focus will therefor be in the business market and perhaps for in class during lectures.
One focus lays on personalizing the tablet. Like you would do know with your paper notebook, making drawings and it feels yours. Where tablets know are being handled with care you are not personally bonding with the device. I am thinking of features where you can add your own gestures for turning on the device (like your autograph) and drawing an envelop around something will automatticaly mail it.
Finally my first questions for you guys (im hoping to asking more in the future);
1. Which functions do you use most on current tablets
2. Will you buy a tablet with these limited amount of functions, and what would you pay
3. If you own an tablet, would you see yourself using it as an personal agenda and notetaker, why and why not?
4. Do you see the monochrone screen as a negative or positive, why would you prefer a colour screen (if outcome was negative)
5. How do you currently personalize a) your tablet and b) your notebook/agenda/phone etc. Outside and inside
6. what size would you prefer?
Any feedback will be welcome, also criticism (constructive) is very welcome.
I am currently just in the research stage, but chances are this product actually hitting the market.
Thanks very much in advance for your time, im hoping for some great feedback!
greets, Kars Rotteveel

I would pay around $960 for a full-fledged tablet , since I'm 15
3. If you own an tablet, would you see yourself using it as an personal agenda and notetaker, why and why not?

There is a possibility that I might use it for note-taking because of its portability

What's with the monochrome ? I'd prefer a colour screen because it makes the tablet experience more pleasant .

Greetings,
I have been on the look out for a tablet for quite some time now.
Some background information:
I am currently a University student, and I enjoy power hungry video games like Diablo3 (if you think d3 isn't power hungry, ok. It isn't the point of the thread.)
I owe a gaming pc - Nvidia 660Ti, and a Tablet / Ultrabook Hybrid - Asus Taichi 31.
I live in Malta. (A&T and T-Mobiles are not available, I have yet to contact them wheter they are willing to offer their services from abroad regarding a data plan) (to my knowledge acquired from these forums, there is currently no possible way to integrate voice calling / smsing with the mini sim. The mini sim is only used for data transfer correct?)
I understand barely nothing about android, roms and kernals, I am studying for a pharmacist. What little I know is mostly about desktops from my interest and sources are typically the internet and some local technicians I enjoy chatting with. (if any1 can point me to a good beginner guide, that would be great)
I am currently looking for something that is able to:
replace my phone - just calls and sms. My lack of education on android devices and a very narrow google search lead me to believe there are apps with this ability if you are always connected to an internet connection? which wouldnt be a problem with the LTE/4G?
good alternative for an mp3 player - main issue: buttery life - size doesn't matter because I use bluetooth headphones
use XBMC hub - i think this tablet can easily handle it
take decent quality photos
stream games from long distances (when I am at university example, from my home) - is the only limiting factor the speed of the internet connection? Is it possible to connect the internet via a cable? (ethernet to mini usb converter?)
My two main priorities are calling/texting and battery life.
I am yet to find a store who has this tablet on display so I can have a feel of the tablet, I do not know if 8'' is ridiculously large to carry around. And I think it also falls within personal preference.
What would you, if in my shoes, get? Should I look for a phablet? I personally find smart phones have a small screen, and the only use I have out of a phone is to text and call, so I would like to have the good out of both ends.
Thank you.

It can meet your needs. You can use Google Voice # and hangouts to make/receive calls. It is a beast at gaming and the nvidia game stream is great, however its huge. In my opinion WAY to big to be used as an everyday phone, and would only allow speak phone calls or through a blue tooth. The call quality is good though.
If you want a tablet I recommend it. However if you want a phone I suggest using a phone.
I would get the tablet then get a Moto G or a Moto E for free and use it as your phone.

GV is google voice? Yes I live in Malta, and thank you I didn't know that.
Is there any other way possible to have voice call / texting possibilities on this tablet?
Hello,
I am developing a Kiosk App for a client.
I need devices with the following requirements:
is currently being produced (because I need to buy up to 500 devices)
low price (under 200€ would be great)
camera should work decently under dark conditions
bootloader should be unlockable
screen size minimum 6’’
My dream device would have a custom ROM, just running my kiosk app, maybe some essential system apps. I would tweak the bootscreen and the power-button menu. In the end, the device should feel less “mobile phone-ish”.
I tested the Umidigi A9, which works, but is quite slow.
Maybe there are other possibilities. What would be your device recommendations?
Thanks in advance
