What do you guys do to maximize your battery life? I just can't seem to get decent life. Average is probably 5 hours with heavy usage.
Any recommendations?

The usual - brightness as low as you can stand, radios not in use turned off, screen timeout 15 seconds, 200-1400 conservative governor in SetCPU.
Search AutoKiller in the market -- choose "optimal" profile, so far has given me an extra two hours today over what I got yesterday.
5h of heavy use is good already.
You can tweak your idle batt life, 2g-only, undervolted kernel, avoiding power hungry rom.
Idle battery life is just amazing with stock... just test it over night, 6hrs get 2/3% for me.
I can get 30hrs with 4hrs with screen on, the screen is the key here, i can get 5hrs with 4hrs with screen on too. ;o)

Try a kernel that is made to optimise batt life with display active, like the XTEUV92 Trinity kernel.

I tried almost every single combination of rom + kernel. And for me, pure stock has the best battery life, by far.
But i'm getting bored and should flash something... )
Ps: afaik trinity doesnt work with stock. Did it change?

How would you define "heavy" usage?
Also, what does your "battery use" stats say? (Settings - About Phone - Battery Use)
5 hours of truly heavy usage (online gaming, for instance) is actually to be expected.

i'm using the same stock 2.3.4 as your signature and tried the morfic kernel from yours, but got no lock at all, freezes and reboots...
that's a little strange for me, first time i see it in my device... =o\\

You can create a custom prl setting. Turn wifi to never sleep when you're at home... Have the prl to auto *CDMA or GSM* Which ever your network is on. (This goes to all Nexus S. users). So you have wifi on with a signal and 3g off. The phone stays in 2g for calls and uses wifi for data. Turn off google location services while your at home, turn off roaming, turn all of that off. I get about 13 hours of battery life with heavy usage. People think wifi drains your battery but it doesn't if you have mobile data turned off. When you have 3g turned on it's constantly searching for a better connection. If you have wifi on and a strong connection it isn't constantly polling.
are there any charging habits that would help prolong battery life? I usually just charge my phone every night cause, if I remember correctly, these batteries don't have a memory or anything. anyone know if that is the smartest thing to do?

I hope you don't mean overnight. I don't know if phones have auto-cutoff feature (a la laptops), but it's safer just not to charge overnight.
I personally use an extension that has a timer built-in. Nifty. Set the timer, plug the phone in, it will automatically start and stop the charging at the predetermined times. I usually time the charging to end right before I wake up, so the battery doesn't stay fully charged for too long. I heard batteries corrode faster when they're fully charged.
When my battery life starts getting shorter than usual, I let them drain until the phone turns off automatically (well I actually try not to get to that point, but seldom succeeded ), and as soon as possible charge it until full.
Usually the battery holds longer then. It has something to do with teaching the battery about the true empty and true full.. or something.....

doesn't the nexus s have a built in cut-off feature so it will only charge to 95% though? I figure that would take care of the full charge issue. i'm also not sure if lithium ion batteries have a memory, but you could always reset the battery stats if you're on root to compensate for the whole draining and fully charging thing.

Battery stats! That's the word I was looking for No I wasn't referring to the memory effect
I don't know what would happen when the cut-off feature kicks up. My Nexus S still shows a charging icon even a while after full, so I don't wanna risk it.
The best way is by touching the charger unit after a while and see if it's warm/hot. If it is, it's still charging. But you gotta give it time to cool down first (after it's finished charging) Haven't gotten around to it, though. Always forgot to check the charger

lol, I know that my phone for sure won't charge to 100% from watching it, so even after a night of charging it's still at 95%. I've read a few explanations on this forum about the whole not fully charging thing too, so i'm pretty sure that it's like that on purpose.
High 300ma - 1000+ ma battery drain on idle. Bought pre-used 1 week. Faulty good or?
Info: already did factory reset using stock motor recovery and cache.
Also did factory reset through android.
Also tested ma drain without any installed apps - still high 600-1000ma drain on standby.
Also when I use battery monitor app, it says my battery is li-on 1500mah.. Is this a fake razr hd? Razr hd meant to read 2530mah?
I'll attach screen shots, please give your opinions people.

I am also experiencing what I feel is significantly less battery life than I should be getting from my new RAZR MAXX HD.
I have only gone through one charge cycle, so I'm hoping it is just a symptom of unconditioned battery.
Last night I went to bed with the phone on 35% and when I woke up 7 hours later it was dead despite being idle with the screen off.
Now after fully charging, battery monitor is giving me an estimate of only 10 hours (after I manually entered 3300 mAh capacity). I expect to get close to 30 hours mixed use out of this phone.
What is the best way for me to determine if there is some problem with my phone?

Are you in a area with poor cell or lte coverage? Searching for signal will murder a battery quickly. I thought my S3 was faulty before I realized that poor lte coverage was eating my batt.

I've been experiencing short battery life as well. I bought a Telstra branded but unlocked RAZR HD from JB Hi Fi and am using it on the Optus network. Could this be keeping the radios awake trying to find a Telstra network or something? Wakelock features prominantly in my battery stats, second only to screen, and the Better Battery Stats app estimates I have around 10 hrs from a full charge. I have 4g off, wifi off, bluetooth off, gps on.
So far its used 5% in 30 mins with very minimal use (one text message and on 2 or 3 times to check Better Battery Stats) and says it's only achieved deep sleep for 4mins 9s.

What does the BBS say the wakelock is? If it isn't under the word wakelock try looking at the biggest partial wakelock. Also if it is signal related it is probably under cell standby in the android battery reporter. Also I hope that isn't whats going on and it is unlikely or no one would use noncarrier specific phones. I am wanting to buy a canadian hd maxx so I can use it here on at&t.

As a reference, here are screenshots of my battery monitor widget history. My drain is typically well under 200 mA when screen is off and idling with radios only. In the first screen shot, RAZR HD was unplugged at 1240, then used GPS, and maps over LTE at 1312, did some texting too. Then it was thrown into the side pocket of my car for awhile explaining the drop in temperature. Third screen is when I charged it up earlier.

OK, after I left home and went to work, phone only drained 10% in 3.5 hours, so thought all might be good, got home, drain started going up again. While at work the phone was achieving deep sleep, at home it stopped again. After looking at BBS and doing some digging, the issue seems to be Fast Dormancy. FDComlpeteTime is the largest partial wakelock by far. Whirlpool website says some optus towers support fast dormancy but not all, so maybe while i was at work i was connected to one of those that has it.
So the next big question is how do I disable fast dormancy on the RAZR HD.
Battery issues
I too have been having battery issues.
My last few phones have been iPhones and I have been extremely disappointed with the Motorola Razr HD's battery.
First, it takes forever to charge up... like over three hours. Is that a common experience for others? My old iphones with charge up from low to full in an hour-ish.
Second, the battery seems to drain at an alarming rate. I have not been using my Razr HD for gaming or videos and I'm not still not getting anything near a full day out of the phone.
I have a drainage shot from Battery Monitor but apparently I can't posted as I'm a noob. But essentially it shows -150 to -350 most of the time (ie. lock screen off or when doing minimal tasks) and then -450 to -750 for anything real (web browsing, maps etc.)... no idea if these are acceptable numbers.
I have been trying to extend my battery life using SetCPU, but frankly this should be necessary.
With 65% battery my estimated time remaining is about 5 hours... I'm not feeling the "all day" battery promised.
Any suggestions welcome!

Ok, so while at my friends place last night the problem persisted. Ended up downloading Titanium Backup and freezing Modem Fast Dormancy Monitor Service. fdCompleteTime disappered from my Partial wakelocks. Battery drain went down quite a lot, after 2-3 hours of monitoring was geting reports of approx 3%-4% an hour =25-30Hrs on battery, very usable.
Came home, put it on charge, went to sleep. Pulled it off charge this morning, didn't touch it for 3-4 hrs, turned it on to see only 66% battery left. thats a drain of approx 10% an hour with no use. After checking BBS there was no significant partial wakelocks at all, but kernel wakelocks have now gone up with smdcntl0, smdcntl1 and bam_dmux_wakelock and radio interface being the big killers.
As this wasn't happening at my friends place, am I just living in a hole that can't get a good lock on reception, or is there some inherent problem with using this phone on the Optus network rather than the network that it was release under (Telstra)?
So after four hours of work and minimal use (checked a couple emails and Twitter) I'm at 75% battery life.
Meanwhile, in the same period and with maybe a bit less usage on an iPhone 4s is sitting at 97%.
I think I've just about had it with the RAZR HD.... it's worst feature is the one it bragged about (battery life).
The battery problem also exists in the maxx hd? It seems there is a big problem, because it occurs many people
Or maybe after a few charge cycle the battery life will be normalized? Pls tell me what happens at you!
Guys i was having this same issue and i uninstalled lightflow app and all is well now. The app wasnt letting my phone go into deep sleep it was always awake even with screen off. Now that i uninstalled the app i only get 2% drain in 6 hours of screen off. I suggest if you have this app to uninstall immediately. Let me know if this helps anyone.

reason: telstra supports fastdormancy (saves battery), but if ur like me and use optus (doesnt support fastdormancy), it will drain your battery because, the razr hd telstra branded was configured like this. uninstall modemfastdormancy using titaniummbackup.

I've already frozen modemfastdormancy monitor in titanium back up.
I'm in Melbourne and in some areas i get ok battery drain, others i get about the same as if i had fast dormancy still on. I think some optus towers are configured to use fast dormancy as before i froze the service i was getting really good battery stats in some areas. (10% over 4 hours).
At the moment I'm just getting round it by switching 3g off when i don't need it.

i have the same issue.. i get something around 12 hours in use, and 1.5 hours display on- time.. ist the seccond charge and discharge process.. if you look at the Images, you can see, that all the time the display was off, the phone doesnt switch in to the deep sleep mode.. i read here in this poste, somebody are talking about wakelocks, could you explain what is mean with that? is there a way to figure out what is prevent the phone to go in to deep sleep mode? i downloaded the battery monitor widget app, but not sure that im right with it..

since some days my battery drives me crazy...
Last week i flashed CM10 by nk111. Nice ROM, but my battery lasted only for some hours with normal usage. So I went back to MIUI...problem stayed.
Yesterday I flashed Jellytime and replaced the battery. The problem stayed as well. At 6 pm battery was full, I restored my apps with Titanium, used it a bit and when I was going to bed at 10 p.m. battery was 81%. Getting up at 5:30 this morning --> battery was 41%.
After the battery was full yesterday night I used display for maybe 10 minutes, why there are 36% battery usage by th display?
WTF happened to my system by flashing CM10 by nk111???
Any help is appreciated!

First, do you have Google now on. It really drains the battery. If that doesn't help install better battery stats and let it go through a couple of cycles, it will help you pinpoint if any apps or wakelocks are draining your battery.

Find the app and del it.

app called carat could also help you find the battery sucking thing. It's a bit more simple than battery stats, you'll like it if you're not an expert.
it doesn't need to be a new app that is sucking power, it could be the poorly made update of some app that you're using for a long time.

Bbs needs to run for at least a full battery cycle to give you a clear picture, if recommend running it for at least a day

I get max 24 hours battery life , sometimes 12 hours , so it's not something to worry. If you speak 2-3 hours and WiFi on another 2-3 hours that is the battery în my case 12 hours max.

IT IS something to worry, cause battery behaviour changed dramatically while I didn't change my usage of the phone.
40% battery loss over night should be a clear indication of abnormal behaviour.

you must run carot a day or two, than it will display some apps on the first page and the approximate battery life you get if you kill them. read the manual also..
Yesterday in the evening I realized a 96% entry in the Partial Wavelocks section - AndroidMediaScanner. I freezed it (I know where my pictures and music is located...), did a full load on the battery and for 4 hours the battery remained at 100%. I really thought the problem is solved...but in the morning...31%
But - the 'Media' entry in the android accu stats is gone, I think this is a partial success.
In the BBS app, there is no remarkable value - the biggest is 3,8%.
When I watch the graphs - WiFi and Awake is nearly completetly blue over the whole night (unfortunately, I can't take screenshots right now for any reason).
I'm a bit helpless right now, will charge the phone now and keep an eye on BBS the next hours/days.
androidmediascanner shouldn't be the bad guy, it's a system app that we all have. maybe your battery is the problem...

I inserted a new battery last week without any change. Don't think both batteries are broken.
The common way to solve this is to do a fresh install. Leave it for a day without any apps yo see if it is ROM related. See if the battery life improve. Install one app per day and monitor your phone awake period with screen on, it should be almost same.

In the morning --> 67%.
Very odd, normally this would probably indicating a defect battery, but it is new!
Maybe a hardware defect?

I have a similar problem here. I was using the desire s for a long timne with stock rom (2.x android), a full battery was enough for ~2 days. Then I rooted the device and installed CM10 (NK111 alpha build).
2 things changed:
The battery is empty after 24h or less.
The wireless network is worse than before. This is my subjective impression but there are places at home or in the office where wifi worked before and stopped working.
I'm starting excessive tests (disabling everything, removing apps, running carat) during xmas holidays to find the reason.
My guess what it might be: to root the device I did a downgrade, including a radio downgrade. Now I run baseband 20.23.30.0802U_38.02.01.11 which is known as "Saga Test RUU" and has the lowest version number of the RRUs listed in the forum. I did not found anything about this in the forum or with google but maybe this is the reason.
My average battery stats with normal use (whole day, used the phone a few minutes):
~30% Display
~25% Wifi
~17% Mobile Standby
~5% Android Os
For comparison, my Motorola Defy has in a similar scenario ~5% Wifi and ~3% Mobile Standby

Today after a fresh charge it has a good signal and Android OS is at 40% battery consumption and continuing to climb. I have done a reset of the phone since I didn't have much on it and it's back to the same behavior again. What is going on here?
I'm having serious doubts about keeping this phone and buying a Moto X
I'm now attempting to put the phone in airplane mode and using GrooveIP while at home (maybe 3 bars is to low for it for a signal before it kills the battery?) That's not normal. I have to decide quickly if I'm going to keep this phone or opt for a Moto X

You should first troubleshoot the problem instead of thinking of buying other phones. I would suggest factory restoring and monitoring things. Use betterbatterystats and see what exactly is slurping battery.

I've reset it and even with nothing else installed it does the same. It's always the Android OS using it.
Get Wakelock Detector from Play and set the option to monitor the OS. Check it after a few hours and see if suspend_backoff is the culprit under kernel wakelocks.
If so, it is disturbing Google hasn't fixed this in 4.4. It has been an issue for quite some time.

I don't know how everyone else is getting 3-5 hours of on screen time. When my screen is on, I lose about 1 percent every 2 minutes it seems like. When I look at the app usage, the kernel and media are sucking the life out of the battery. I am really discouraged about this battery because my G2 would easily get 3.5+ hours of on screen time. So far, I am going to be lucky to get about an hour.

Something is wrong with ur phone or u have some jacked up apps. I have got over 6 hours screen time with this phone and got over 5 with my DNA. You need to download GSAM or BEtter battery stats.

I have Gsam installed but sometimes it doesn't accurately record on screen time as it resets to 0. Also, today I unplugged my phone and the phone was thinking that the charger was still connected. As I said, Gsam reports that the Kernel is taking battery power.

Something is way wrong with your phone then.
Mine has terrible battery life
I am very much on the same page with you. I am on my 4th cycle.
Mine only last 14 hours with 3 hours of screen time. I don't understand how all these people are getting 5 to 6 hours of screen time.
I have both Better Battery Stat and GSam monitor and it shows Kernel is taking 50% and system is taking 6.2%
Just try with different kernals,good kernals would give exellent battery life
I would gladly take the battery problems to get rid of this brand new beast. It's too Frickin big.. I had g2 but sold it. Paid 700 for this att note 3...lol. straight talk on att towers to save on bills. But this thing may be the fastest latest greatest next to the new releases of '14 but I should have kept the g2...This is a tank. I'd swap for smaller phone in heartbeat. Might post cl ad

Are you in the right forum? This makes no sense.
I think it highly depends on what you're doing when screen is on. If you're playing games or using a lot of data, it can drain very quickly. If you're watching local videos or something, your battery would last a lot longer.

if you are rooted, install better battery stats (free on xda from the dev) to see the culprit.
clearly something is keeping the phone awake and hogging the cpu
So far today with only 10 minutes of screen on time and 45 minutes of playing a podcast through Bluetooth in my car the battery is down to 92%. This podcast was already downloaded and just playing from Dogcatcher. When I left I rebooted the phone right after pulling it off the charger. The phone is rooted and all Verizon apps are disabled. I see the android system at 40% and Google Services at 15% usage. Yesterday with only about 2 hours of screen on time I was down to 18% after 10 hours off the charger. I do not see any one app drawing power, it is always the android system it seems.
Edit: Using BetterbatteryStats I noticed that my phone has basically been awake the entire time it has been off the charger. Out of 2.5 hours it was in deep sleep for 10 minutes.
I don't get great battery life either. Nor do I get good game performance. Battery has went down 9% in less than 2 hours of idle. Just downloaded gsam the kernel use is the highest at 26+ percentage

Turning off Location Reporting made a HUGE difference to my battery life. I accidentally left my phone laying in bed next to me last night instead of plugged in, and it dropped maybe 5% over 6 hours.

I will try disabling location reporting. But I know with my Galaxy S3 I had this enabled and did not have battery issues.
I turned off location reporting and location history and am seeing better battery life today. 5hrs 47 min and 89% battery left.
My battery is confusing me. First 2 days.. 15hrs 3hrs screen on time.. 3 days after that 24+hrs with 5hrs screen on time... The past couple of days I'm back down to 14-15hrs with 1-3hrs screen on time. This is running it down to 10%
My usage isn't much different from day to day.
Power saving is now enabled and I turned off location settings. Let's see...
M8, nuff said.
What I do not understand is why my old GS3 and my co-workers HTC One M7 with location services on, do not have this battery drain problem. This should not be an issue.
Yeah, it seems to be an on and off issue. On my GNex sometimes after flashing a ROM I had to turn location reporting off to get through the day, and then after the next ROM flash I didn't.
