I am having problems with really rubbish signal and was looking to downgrade my radio to a different version. I understand to do this I have to downgrade the HBOOT to a version which I can do true s-off.
as the phone is already rooted and has a custom recovery, do i just need to change the version on the phone using misc_version tool and then reflash using an RUU of my choice ?

I have the same issue and have read the guides referred to in the following posts but I still have a question. I have read somewhere that you cannot HTCdev relock if you are on a custom Rom. Is this correct? If so I have a bigger problem as my backup of my original Rom will not restore possibly due to a lib partition issue.

You need to relock and flash RUU to boot the phone properly.
I make a unlook with htc dev. Then i flash The recovery and Make a nandroid Backup. After this i flash the customs. An all thinks u running.i have Nov Problems. All time. Tmo desire s

I had the same thing, I wanted to re-lock my Bootloader, downgrade it, S-OFF and upgrade to the re-engineered so that I would flash the latest radio.
I managed to get it done so I'm sharing it with you, so that you can do it too if you want.
The steps that I took are the following (I had a branded DS so I'm adding the Goldcard info too):
#0 took a full NAND backup of my currently running custom rom (FlashOne) and copied everything from the SD Card to my PC (I used it as a goldcard).
#1 Made a goldcard since I have a branded DS and afterwards put from the RUU the rom.zip file (renamed to PG88IMG.zip) in the sdcard root directory.
#2 from this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443636
went directly to step 6 and changed the misc_version.
#3 reboot in bootloader (having the Goldcard in) and let the ROM file install itself. Or if you're unbranded then you don't need neither the Goldcard, nor to reboot in bootloader, simply flash the RUU with the old Hboot/Radio (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506). I used: RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M_release_177977_signed.exe to get the rom.zip file.
#4 boot your "new" 2.3.3 android, remove the ROM file from the SD Card and proceed with revolutionary: http://revolutionary.io/
#5 I didn't want to flash CWM so I manually flashed from fastboot, 4EXT.
#6 did a full wipe of everything and copied the radio firmware on the SD card, rebooted in bootloader and flashed it
#7 used my sister's Wildfire S ( ) to access the SD card and remove the radio file and copied the new re-engineered Hboot. Rebooted in bootloader and flashed the new HBoot.
#8 that wildfire S saved me again, used it to remove the Hboot file from the SD card
#9 booted in 4ext recovery, accessed my sd card from there, formated it and copied in the SD Card the backed up contents from step #0.
#10 once done, I simply did a full wipe (again) and restored the FlashOne 2.0.4 backup that I had taken earlier.
And It's up and running!!!
Ok here are the steps I followed and gained s-off
I am assuming you are on 2.3.5 Sense 3.0 Hboot 2.0...
- Go to htc dev and unlock your bootloader
- Flash recovery (4EXT recommended)
- Flash any rom which is rooted ( I flashed Europe Stock pre rooted)
- This time you will have to flash boot.img from fastboot
- Follow steps here to downgrade http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1604255
- Run revolutionary and gain s-off your bootloader will be 6.98,,,
- Upgrade HBOOT using http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1679338
- Now you have latest hboot and s-off and you can flash any rom
since you are already rooted, you don't have to do much, just grab a misc version binary from anyone of the threads mentioned, change the misc version on your phone by simply writing 2 commands that are mentioned in any downgrading thread, relock the bootloader using «fastboot oem lock» and run any previous version ruu of your region(exe file), that should be all.
The only place where there's a scope of error is in running ruu, if so, a little search will do.

Can anyone please tell me how to install a custom ROM onto my Desire S with the bootloader unlocked via HTC Dev and S-ON?
My guess is that you install CWMR and flash it via that. But you need root access to do that, I thought unlocking the bootloader was meant to eliminate this.
Also, I've been reading that people are having issues installing ROMs this way, they are experiencing a hang at the HTC logo on boot.
Any information will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

After you flash the custom ROM using CWM, you then have to extract the boot.img file from the ROM.zip file and manually flash it in FASTBOOT mode. That is the nature of the unlocked bootloader. The boot partition is not mounted R/W in recovery mode, it is only mounted R/W when you are in bootloader FASTBOOT mode.
Ok, from reading yours and various other posts in the forum, I need to do the following to install a custom ROM with an unlocked bootloader and S-ON:
1. Unlock bootloader via HTC's website
2. Root phone (with gingerbreak apk?)
3. Install CWM via ROM manager
4. Backup existing ROM with CWM and backup files with titanium
5. Install ROM via CWM (wipe data, wipe cache, install ROM)
6. Flash boot.img (HBOOT, fastboot, and flash image)
7.Reboot into cyanogenmod
If I have anything wrong, please let me know. Thanks.

Step 2 and 3 are not necessary. After you Unlock the bootloader, you could then simply flash ClockworkMod in FASTBOOT mode.
1. Unlock bootloader.
2. Flash CWM image in FASTBOOT mode.
3. Backup existing ROM with CWM.
etc.
Successfully installed latest nightly r2 yesterday night :O

I'm in the same position as the OP with the newly unlocked bootloader via HTC.
I flashed cwm through fastboot but now I can't reflash through ROM Manager. I installed both SuperUser and BusyBox but both point the finger at eachother saying the other needs to be installed. What am I missing??

Download the latest su-3.0.x.zip file. Then boot into CWM recovery and install this zip file. This will root the current ROM you have installed and then ROM Manager and BusyBox will both be happy.

So you unlocked via HTC dev, flashed custom recovery, wiped all partitions, flashed cyanogenmod, rebooted into fastboot, flashed boot.img via fastboot (fastboot flash boot /pathtobootimg/boot.img, if i recall correctly) and then you were able to boot into cyanogen?
I did exactly these steps (only with 4ext instead of cwm, which shouldn't affect the result) and was stuck with the white bootscreen and no adb logcat output whatsoever.
Currently I am back on a prerooted official RUU (2.3.3), but it still performs really bad and I would like to have cyanogenmod.
Btw: I have a Desire S, hboot 2.00.0002, S-ON, no carrier branding.

I read many thread and i understood that the curret way to do this is:
Downgrade My ROM from 2.3.5 ( 2.10.401.8 with HBOOT 2.00.0002) to a ROM 2.3.3 with HBOOT 0.98.00000 (Ex: RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.47.401.4_Radio_20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199410_signed.exe)
To do this i need to follow the steps from 1 to 7 of this

Hello, I just want to share my experience on how i managed to S-OFF my phone. My main problem was that I had the latest ruu on 2.10.401.8 and couldnt downgrade. Even though i unlocked the bootloader using the htcdev .bin file I couldnt install the proper recovery (clockwork mod) nor a previous ruu. So here is what I did.
I first unlocked the phone using the htcdev.
Then I followed those pretty 7 steps mentioned on prev post.
and changed my version to a prev one.
I r e l o c k e d my phone using htc supertool and
clicked my 1.47 ruu exe file. That worked and it downgraded my phone.
After that it was a piece of cake to use the revolutionary tool to S-OFF.
Thanks all the xda community for the infos i got and managed to do it....

Does this hboot makes more complicated to flash roms? I've read that is not possible to format system/lib, so some roms have to be changed. How to delete system/lib then?
Is it advised to stay on that hboot or should be downgraded or s-off?
As far as i know only few latest ICS based ROMs require new HBOOT. I am on Fallout 5.0, worked fine with older HBOOT 6.98.2000 (Revolutionary root)

You can stay on that hboot and use 4EXT Recovery to format /system/lib. It will remain empty when you flash a ROM that is not supporting it so there is nothing to worry about
EDIT: I may be wrong, just saw the post in Scanob thread. But you can test it. Make a nandroid backup (and/or put a ROM on the SDcard), wipe /system/lib from recovery and reboot. If the ROM boots then it is true (/system/lib cannot be wiped). If does not boot (then /system/lib is wiped) reboot back to recovery: "adb reboot recovery" - you need USB debugging enabled in ROM and adb drivers on the PC or with the 3 key combo (hold Vol Down + Vol Up + Power) and restore the backup or flash the new ROM

well i have got cwm and backed up my rom.and flashed others no problem but with loading a rom i had to go into command promps and flash a boot.img. well no problem there as i downloaded roms with a boot.img with them.now i want to go back to my original stock rom and load it it loads ok but when i load the boot.img it dose not work.i got the boot img from the back up that i made of my stock original rom.
please help as i would love to know whar i am doing wrong cheers

Did you try to flash your boot.img in CLI with fastboot like you did when you installed your cutom ROM ?
Edit : Your question has nothing to do with the subject of this thread (Hboot 2.02.0002 ).
The RUU ICS Update installs:
hboot: 2.02.0002
radio: 3831.19.00.110
This also prevents me from updating cause i´m also afraid that rooting and installing custom roms won´t work afterwards.
Is there an opportunity to downgrade from 2.02.0002 to another hboot and install a previous RUU to root it via revolutionary for example?
I'm no expert but, I have HBoot 2.00.0002. HTC dev unlocked. And I have had no problem flashing any rom. I have tried Andromadus, Flinny, NK111, Codename android, and I'm currently using Jelly Time R15.0 as my daily use rom.
I'm not afraid of not being able to root my DS after the ICS RUU. I would be able to unlock the hboot again, flash ext4, then install SuperSu from the recovery.
I'm just afraid that the 2.02.0002 hboot will make it difficult for me to install custom ROMs in the future if this hboot restricts effectively the acess to /system/lib. But I would also like to try the new radio of the ICS RUU.
The alternate path I'm considering to follow is downgrading my hboot, S-OFF by revolutionary, flash hboot 2.00.2002, then flash stock ICS using a PG88IMG.zip where hboot and recovery would be removed.

Yes, this hboot makes it more complicated to flash ROMs because you have to flash the kernel - boot.img - separately using fastboot. But if the ROMs all share the same kernel, then you can skip this step.
The hboot has the extra system/lib partition, but that is only used by the latest stock HTC GB OTA and the HTC ICS RUU. Custom ROMs generally don't use it.
This partition can be formatted, for example using 4EXT, just like the other partitions.

I personally found that it couldn't flash custom roms without s-off due to being unable to write the /system directory. I had to downgrade the RUU so that I could get S-OFF with revolutionary in order to be able to. If you are upgrading with the ICS stock ROM you won't need to, but you will need to re-lock your hboot to flash the RUU

Yeah, I have hboot 2.02.0002 with htc dev unlock and I can write to /system without issues.

I'm totally new in the rooting/customROM business. I want to flash the Desire XS version 1.1 on my desire s, since the 2.3.5 is a little old now...

Furthermore I don't want Reaper v2.1, but Desire XS version 1.1. So I downloaded this and copied on the SD. Now, I "have to copy boot.img into the folder where I have adb and fastboot ". But where can I find boot.img within the ROM? I found it 2 times in \Kernel\b2b and \Kernel\patched. Is one of them the right one?!
Also in the Desire XS version 1.1 thread it is says "I recommend that all users be on radio 20.76.30.0835U_3831.19.00.110 before installing this rom"
But I couldn't find any information to switch to this specific radio (just others).

While flashing the rom you have a choice of 2 kernels (b2b and patched). Use the boot.img of the kernel you will be choosing.
If you want to upgrade the radio (while still s-on) you need to relock your bootloader, flash the Ics RUU, unlock your bootloader again. (some users reported camera issues on desire xs with an older radio version, you could try it first with your current radio).

Thanks. I guess I'll take the b2b kernel then, since it's the one mentioned in the description. or is the other better?!
Also when flashed is there a way back to the version I have now?! (since you didn't answer my question regarding a recovery of the current system) Can I afterwards just recover via a RUU?!

You can make a backup in recovery before flashing, just remember to flash the boot.img from your backup as well if you restore it.
The main difference is, the patched kernel supports overclocking and undervolting, the b2b doesn't.
but how can I do a recovery? My phone is not rooted yet and S-Off (it's just unlocked), is it possible to create a recovery like that?
edit: I found my exact system (2.10.166.3) on htcdev, I guess in the worst case I'll be able to get it back from there. I hope just hope for the best! =)

You have to flash the recovery.img in fastboot. (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img)
Them you can choose recovery from the bootloader.

Hey guys, so I bought a HTC Sensation XE yesterday (2nd hand), and it's my very first time owning this phone so I'm completely new here on this forum section.
Anyway, I want to get it to S-OFF and I tried following many different guides. In the end, I got really confused, and since I don't wanna risk bricking my phone, I thought I'd ask for some help. But first, here's some basic information about my phone:
1. Stock ICS v4.0.3

3. Baseband version - 11.76A.3504.00U_11.24A.3504.31_M
4. HBoot - v1.29.0000

6. CWM recovery installed and Rooted with SuperSu
Ok, so here's what I did. I followed this guide here, since the topic title says it's for any 1.2x HBoot:

But since I'm already HTCdev Unlocked, then I have to go to this guide instead (as stated in the instructions):

BUT, the topic clearly says it's for "HBOOT 1.27.0000 with 3.32 ICS Firmware".
So am I suppose to downgrade my HBoot and firmware then? But then, why would the guide (the first link) say it works for any 1.2x HBoot?
Well, I decided to attempt S-OFF anyway by skipping steps #1, #2 and #3 and jumping straight to step #4. I ran ControlBear, and I get the following error:

I searched on the net and apparently the "Secondary Backup" shows up if you're using a custom rom (which I'm not). Other than that, I can't find any other info on this.
What should I do here?

OK nvm I got it working. Apparently, I flashed the Superuser v3.07.zip file after getting my HTCdev unlock (because I needed to root it in order to attempt S-OFF), and somehow forgot I did that and then rooted it again by flashing SuperSu.
Somehow, having 2 superuser installed will cause Juopunutbear S-OFF to fail.
Anyway, I achieved S-OFF now, and at the end of the process it asked me if I want to install a modified (custom) HBoot, so I chose yes.
It said installed successfully, but it still shows I'm using HBoot v1.29.0000 in the boot menu (power off + volume down).
Is this suppose to be correct? I dunno what advantages there are for installing a custom HBoot, and apparently it's suppose to be v1.27, so I dunno if I did it correctly or not. It does say I have S-OFF in the menu so that went successfully, but not sure about my HBoot.......
get the hboot flashed. it gives you added benefit when you face any issues.
the best was to get a patched hboot flashed is by flashing revolutionary hboot (patch from hboot 1.29.0000 to 1.27.1100 i think -at the end of first post) ..from kohr-ah's firmware thread in sensation development section...flash that like a firmware (instructions in the same thread )
To delete one of the su apps go into system apps folder and delete the one you want.

Running an RUU is only simple for those who haven't been messing with their devices, and that usually isn't us. Since I just did this, I want to write down the steps because I was not able to find easy answers.
This assumes your device is rooted with a different ROM installed. If that is not the case, then you can just download and run the RUU for your device, end of instructions.
Downloading the correct RUU
The most complete list of RUUs for Ville is found on androidruu.com

There are RUU updates listed for other service providers, but I can't tell if they are JellyBean hboot 2.15 or not. If someone knows, I'll update this post.
Preparing your device
Make your device s-off if it isn't already. Why?
You will not have to relock the bootloader to perform the RUU update.
You will not have to flash the boot image separately.
If for some reason you can't or won't go s-off, you can still do this, but will have many more steps to follow.

Or you can use the HTC All-In-One Toolkit which helps you through the process.
Use the HTC All-In-One Toolkit (link above) to change the CID to match the RUU.
You needed Super CID to gain s-off, but it won't help you install RUUs. Even if you are Super CID (11111111), you must change your CID to match the RUU you are installing (mine is TMobile: T-MOB010). I know, kinda defeats the purpose of being Super CID, but the RUU won't succeed otherwise. If you are s-off, it is a one click operation using the All-In-One Toolkit.
Backup your device
Use Titanium backup to backup all your user apps so you can restore them afterwards. (No, don't restore system apps please!)
Also back up your ROM by booting into recovery mode and selecting Backup.
If you are only updating the hboot but keeping the same ROM, you can just restore the backup afterwards. Not sure why anyone would need to update the hboot without installing a new ROM, but then you also have a backup in case things go wrong.
Run the RUU
If you are s-on you will have to relock the bootloader by rebooting into the fastboot mode, connecting your device to the computer and running the command "fastboot oem lock". You will also have to follow the process again to unlock your bootloader after doing the update. Tutorials for that are found elsewhere.
1. Leave bootloader unlocked, and leave s-off as is. No need to go back to s-on or relock bootloader.
2. Run the RUU and wait while it updates the phone (Incidentally, it didn't even wipe my sd partition data!)
3. While you are still in bootloader mode (before booting up), use the All-In-One tool to install the TWRP S4 recovery. Or, if you don't want to use the tool, you'll have to download a recovery and use "fastboot flash recovery" followed by the name of the recovery img file.
4. Reboot bootloader and enter recovery mode
5. Restore from backup or Mount USB from TWRP and copy over the ROM and gapps package, flash, wipe cache, and you are up and running.
If you are s-on you will need to extract the boot.img from the zip you are flashing and flash that image separately with "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
Note that device still has the unlocked bootloader and is still s-off! :victory:
My device before: hboot 1.09, unlocked bootloader, Super CID, s-off (In layman's terms, this is a device with an unlocked bootloader so it can accept other ROMs, set to accept any service provider's RUU update via SuperCID, and has had write permission to the boot sector removed via s-off).
My device after: hboot 2.15, unlocked bootloader, T-MOB010 CID, s-off
If possible, I will answer your comments or questions by updating this post and I'll refer you back to here.

You have to change your CID back to the one for your RUU.
Can I use this tutorial to rollback to 2.15 or whatever works for ViperS rom with sense 4 after I flashed MaximusHD and firmware?
Now my phone is like this:
Hboot 2.16
Radio 1.20.50 (worst radio ever)
S-OFF
CID 11111111
The rom's with sense 5 (I tried just maximus because the others are not compatible with the new firmware, the sdcard mount point for multi user) are killing my battery more than twice faster compared with ViperS. 2h Display vs 5h on Viper.

Upgrading your hboot is a one way street, as far as I know. Can't you change the radio to something else?
I flashed Viper ROM. All the things are ok, gsm, wifi, etc just I can't see the internal memory like I should. I can browse to it file es file explorer but I need a method to default mount the new (4.2.2) location of it. Where is mounted by the internal memory in 4.1 JB? I discovered a file vold.fstab. Maybe I can change something like that somewhere to be able to use 4.1 ROM's again.

Did you run the RUU.exe when your phone was in bootloader (fastboot USB mode)?

I have the same problem. I can't go back to stock. I haven't changed my CID yet but I see that has not worked for you.

Hey I used your instructions and everything was perfect thank you. I used to upgarde and downgrade hboot even to restore the HTC one S
I got the RUU "Error: 159" again with both RUU from first post and testet with each common cid, but at the end I only got success with super cid and the TMO_US Ruu.
Now I am back on Hboot 2.15 and can flash again the newest custom-recovery, thank you very much.
I've heard about a flashabe standalone zip for the hboot 2.15 and found this:
