[MOD] Quick Network Speed Trick - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So, you need a One XL that is rooted to do this. Pretty easy stuff.
Go to /system and mount it rw using your favorite method
Edit build.prop, probably line 8, "ro.ril.hsxpa=5" default is 4.
Reboot
Post whether this made a difference with HSPA (4G icon). Also include what value you used and the network & region tested against.

After that test I didn't go below 3000 down. Previously this device in my area seemed to max out below 3000 but I've since tested well over 4000. See if it works for you!
Also, if you feel brave, try 6. I've found that a value of 6 gets me up around 5000 down, but the connection stability is somewhat compromised. I have 3 bars where I am at, and as always with radio stuff:
YMMV

what about lte

Dunno man, I live in the northwest. They claim lte will arrive by the end of this year, but who knows? Point is, I can't test it and certainly doubt this little trick does anything for lte... While you're in the coverage area anyway ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. I tried values higher than 6 and it ruins my HSPA. Not really sure why it would affect LTE, but I am definitely getting 6 megabits per second now over HSPA... Good to know it screws up LTE.

I'm on at&t and have hspa.
Much faster now!
Thanks!

Worked great. my speeds doubled after this

I noticed some of these mods [wifi fix (delete AT&T auto connect), debrand device] require a reboot to take effect; does the same ring true here? Should I reboot between changes of build.prop?

Apologies, my op was not comprehensive. Any build.prop change will require a reboot, this one included.

nice little tweak there. went from ~3000kbps to ~4000kbps. that's a free 33% bump!! Thanks.
I tested values of 4, 5, and 6. 3k @ 4, and 4k @ 5 and 6. So, no change from 5 to 6

This didn't do me any good at all.
ETA: The first three (at the bottom) are before the change, and the second three are after.
Billy

Gained 1mbps down(3.8), and slightly quicker upload(800kbps)
On Rogers

It is important that comparison tests happen as close together as possible from a time perspective, and that the phone is in the same exact location and same exact orientation. Tests become meaningless when time difference is significant or phone location/orientation is changed.
I have observed a repeatable variation between 2 and 5 Mbit just by changing phone orientation. Be sure it's laying on a desk or something so repeated tests can be as meaningful as possible!

You should make sure it's using the same server too... Mine tried to use a different server the second time even though I was in the same location. I think it used the cell tower to fin my location one time and my GPS the second time.

I had the same exact effect. My speeds actually suffered a bit in the same exact spot as prior to making the change. What I am interested in is the capability to turn LTE off so as to save battery life for those of us who live in HSPA areas only. I somehow doubt that is possible to do in a build.prop tweak though.
One other thing I noticed, prior to the change (from 4 to 5) my upload speed test was smoooth and right around the 1.1mbps upload speed. After I made the change to 5, my speed test would start spiked at ~2mbps, then freeze, then drop to 1.4 then freeze, then drop to 1.2 and so on. It wouldn't go any lower than 1.1 but it was super chunky feeling, like it was testing one block at a time very slowly. THIS could deeply impact using voip services such as Skype or Tango, especially when using video stream.

I got a 28.94 down, 35.48 up speed test when I was in Manhattan 2 days ago
I actually would have kept the atrix if i could even get 3g speeds.
I never broke 1.5 MB down...
And I live in Phoenix AZ!!
Oh , it also sucks for coverage - I would drive 10 miles out of city limits and go from 4 bars to NOTHING.
Verizon has a fantastic network - but the Atrix is the best phone i have ever had...
I returned the atrix for the thunderbolt..
I'm a long time verizon customer.. the AT&T network was too hit or miss, the phone had bugs.
it was faster, but I don't have verizon 4g coverage here yet in milwaukee. I'm sure that'll change and I can't wait
battery life, the atrix was better, but it had a 1900mah battery.. the tbolt has 1400 and a much larger screen.. i'm scared to see how it gets when I start beating on 4g... I can barely keep it to sustain a change while on the charger using mobile hot-spot.
The consumer is the only one that loses here

Nah - the upload speed is probably wrong due to the TB's huge upload buffer. It's a known issue that upload speeds aren't going to be correct using the SpeedTest app.
But no buffer in the world can improve download speeds, and I more care about that.
the download speed is borked as well, reads too low.

4Mb/s? You can get that with a standard flip phone. Now 4MB/s is a different story.
Either way, the atrix isnt really 4g, and it has a locked bootloader. Good luck, the tbolt also has more dev support and its only been out for one week today. How bout that? Those are the things that really matter. They are both great phones.

We had some past threads about this... but they aren't active recently so I'll jump on this one. Plus T-Mobile did those changes here in the States recently. I do see a slight difference in my speed since they "doubled" the speeds in many major cities. Only problem... it's now a little slower for me. Will keep testing.
Before Speed Doubling
-------------------------
6-7 Mbps average
10 Mbps max seen
After Speed Doubling

4-5 Mbps average
7 Mbps max seen
Lame! Maybe my old 2g SIM card is finally coming into play? I'm over my 5 Gb as is my norm so maybe I'm being throttled to HSDPA (3.5 g) lol
Yeah it's possible your Sim card is playing a role in that. May want to swap it out!
I'm in north side of Chicago, max speed seems to be around 5-6Mbps at my office, although I'm getting all bars. Will do some speedtest when I go to the Starbucks right next to the t-mobile store (I suspects they would have wifi-to-cell access point there to max out the speed)!
I'm in Queens,New York and speeds are lame where i live.I never reached 3Mbps. my average speed is around 1-2.5Mbps

Show me the bars

Ok guys as this is more of a theming issue then anything else, I posted it here.
Here is what I would like.
1. A Screen shot of anyone that gets one bar on H+
Why you ask. Well with all the issues and posts popping up about "What roms will get me H+/4G" or "I only have the H but getting great speeds" threads I am on a quest to prove once and for all that the icons the end user sees dont mean squat!!!! Working on roms and themes I (and anyone else that ever made a theme/rom) noticed that the icons for the signal bars go in order of 0,2,3,4,5 For the stock ATT rom with the H+ icon. Notice something?..........Yup there is no icon for 1 bar, Now we compare this to the Icons for the HD on a stock rom. Icons order of 0,1,2,3,4 with the H icon. Now notice the proper order. The H+ icon (graphics) was changed to just an H. It was only a graphics change. Anyone want a 10G icon lmao but I hope you see the point.
So I have asked a few people to see if they could get em a SS of a single bar while connected to H+ and we all have failed to ever see it. Now I ask the threads as I just may not be in that bad of an area to ever get just one bar. Alaska go figure lol.
There is no Magic about connecting to ATT 4g (and I say this very loosely as 4G really doesnt mean alot right now with out a set standard for 4G) If you have an Inspire and the area supports the speeds then it will not matter WTH the icon says. Me personally, I am looking for a way to remove the signal icons all together as If I wanted to know how good my signal is I have an app to tell me with a handy small widget for fast look refs.
So please I ask For a SS to find this bar, and put this to rest.
Think I am wrong, Please show me.
I will post one tomorrow. I already left work. I have an area at my job where I consistently get one bar with the H+ icon. Despite the one bar, data still flies when I see this. I don't believe there is a connection with the bars and the H+ icon.

Stock rooted. No mods. I also saw this when I was stock Froyo, rooted and unrooted. Typically, the areas I see this is areas where there is some interference with the cellular signal, causing fluctuations. Data is rarely affected. In fact, I was zipping along on data when I noticed the signal and caught that screen shot.

The images are all the same in both the stock inspire and the stock DHD. Both apks contain all the signal bars needed for ATT, tmobile, CDMA techs so it is just a matter of it calling the wrong image.

At&t flex2 h950

Just picked up the flex2 from at&t at lunch today. So far its been performing great, at least when comparing to my nexus 5 on 5.1. Did not experience any lag so far like some early reviews suggest. Not sure if the 3gb ram helps here. Will report more on battery later.
Same. Battery life is my only concern. I feel like I won't be able to make it through the day anymore. It's 11:30am (I've been up 3 hours), and I'm at 62%. It's exactly what I predicted would happen in my post a few months ago (Link).
But as far as performance, this thing is rocking.

Screen ghosting: No, burnt images no longer show up like they did on the first gen.
Carrier IQ: This is new to me, however, in the list of packages there is a "LADDM 5.0.1-H95010d". I also just did some research on it. I download 3C Toolbox and it definitely has carrieriq.
No ghosting at all. And the performance has been superb. One thing I noticed though is the screen brightness range being quite limited. Its not bright enough under sunlight and not dim enough at night. Screen in most lighting condition is great and vivid though with some noticeable grainy areas. And smart screen feature is not included (the phone stays awake as the front camera detects your face). Not a deal breaker but nice to have feature.
Battery life is great for me. I started my day at 7am and ended up 65% coming home at 6pm with 1.5hr screen on time. I am a light user with occasional YouTube and play music stream, and some email checking web browsing. Connected to my moto360 all the time. No GPS no Wi-Fi just lte. I know the battery life depends much on personal usage, and for me it is great and I'm going to keep my phone (was thinking about switching to the s6 edge).
One big plus is the quick charge 2.0. Boy it does charge fast, and I think it's the one feature I can't live without moving forward.
That's good to hear. Mine should be delivered in about 12 hours from now and I am sending my nexus 6 back. I am on my 4th warranty replacement , seems moto does not do a very good job refurbishing phones. Looking forward to getting back to lg.

US Default Applications AT&T H950
Is it at all possible for someone in this thread to help me in discovering which app I have deleted on accident with the AT&T Variant H950. I am unsure as to exactly why I have no data any longer but I'm sure it is because I have deleted a specific app that is needed in order to access the ATT Data as well as do any kind of call forwarding as well. Perhaps someone here in the thread can post a list of their exact applications so I can find out exactly what it is that I am missing. I have called AT&T about the issue and they are currently investigating the matters but If it is something I can figure out without help I would be much happier without the 90 minutes of wait time. Thank YOU!!

Even though these speeds are plenty for my usage, it kind of stinks to think I might have even better speeds with a different device.

I haven't activated 5G yet but it doesn't seem to improve speed much on this phone. I think I'll save the $$ until Motorola addresses it.

Today I set my edge to prefer LTE and ran speed test then right back to 5g for test. The LTE in my area is much slower, so 5g does make a difference here. 48 vs 15 download speed as shown in screenshot

I see, in this case, I guess it's relative. It must be a location thing. The speeds I'm getting are more than enough for all my uses.
Edit: I know these were all done together but this is what I get at any time of the day or night generally.

I've never come close to 100 Mbps ever with any phone in my area, I wouldn't bother worrying about 5g either at this time.

Speeds improved today Tmobile said tower work was being done in my area...
I am in N Peoria but yesterday was 1st day driving around with this phone and it was all over the place in speed and some areas 4G was faster
So for now its really address specific.
Didnt notice mine till I watched a YouTube today and the kid said the case was super loose by the power button and sure enough I checked and its really bad.

Yeah same area but think the 114 still gives hope!
I would still DM them on twitter just to see what they say.
