Is EDGE usable for someone? - HTC One S

Already stated in another thread, I have an issue when using EDGE connectivity.
(HOME button activate on its own and loop)
Can you please feedback here if you have the same issue and also if you use EDGE with no problem?
I was planning to return the phone, but in fact I didn't find any positive feedback...
My HTC One S is running under 1.78 EU

Works fine here. No problems when connected with EDGE and pretty good data speeds for 2G.
Also running 1.78 EU stock.

Hello
I've the same issue. no problem in G, 3G, H or wifi
I'm in Martinique. Phone received from France on wednesday 9th and updated to 1.78.401.2
I don't know if it's because of the update.
I contacted HTC customer service on friday. waiting for answer...

I'm using edge right now

Yeah - same problems with the random and annoying home button activations when connected over EDGE - all OK on other radios...
"Fixed" it by setting my mobile data "Network Mode" to WCDMA only - which seems to disable the EDGE radio - I know this is limiting me to only using data where I've got a 3G signal or WiFi, but at least the phone doesn't keep returning to home...
Not ideal, but it definitely appears to be specific to when the phone is using the EDGE radio.

I've returned mine to the supplier but they didn't tell me if they solved the problem and just lost the phone when sending it back to me. I live in south of France and it was delivered near Paris. Thanks B&You for such a perf :-(
I can't get any news from them. I'm really disapointed by HTC to deliver such phones and annoyed now by the lack of respect of B&You(Bouygues Telecom)...
I'm back on my Defy that is broken(audio not working anymore...it's a PDA but not a phone anymore...)

Hi!
Right now (Subway) on EDGE and Home Button is working as it should!
My ROM is Leedroid 2.0, also
1.78 based.
Is the issue limited to Stock ROMs?
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA

I am using EDGE now it seems to be alright for the most part.

I have the same problem, I reported to HTC, I hope they fix that problem soon.
Phone is unusable for me most time I'm only in EDGE coverage in my work and home

it seems as if the phone is having trouble being a phone - all other features are great!
really, all phone related connections are very bad:
if it gets 3G it is hard for the system to switch down to 2G when necessary (used to be smooth with my desire).
System reports signal but actually I'm unavailable for long periods - didn't happen with my desire with same provider and same locations.

On EDGE it's mostly usable, but on GSM i have massive problems. Mostly if i enable Data connectivity in GSM mode. Also in phone mode in GSM i have always the homescreen toggle problem.
I contacted HTC, they say its a known error, and they are working on a fix, but have no release date.

My experience may not compatible to you.
Mine is in China mobile's EDGE network, which is using 1.54's radio.
the data connection(the "E" icon) has a big chance to be lost when switching to new cell station.
I have just upload its radio to 0.16 via RUU, and hopes it would be more robust in switching

[Q] 'R' Above Signal Strength

I live in Thailand and the Sensation just arrived here this week and I purchased mine yesterday. I upgraded from a Desire HD and everything works OK but right above my signal strength bars at the top of the screen I have an 'R'? I've never seen that before, anyone know what it means?
Roaming I believe.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e
yep, roaming
it happens to me somtimes but usually goes away quickly...if it doesnt, try putting the fone in airplane mode for 5-10 seconds, then disabling airplane mode, that fixes it most times
...unless you ARE roaming, in which case, disregard
are u living near the border of Malaysia?
No, I don't live close to the border but right after I posted the question I received the notification that a software update was available. I installed it and no more 'R' so I guess that was one of the things that they fixed.
Thanks for posting this question. I disabled the autoupdate on my sensation and because of this post it made me check for updates on my SG sensation and I'm glad the 1.35 update is indeed available for SG as well.

It looks like I spoke too soon, my roaming 'R' disappeared after I upgraded my software to the latest but today it came back. I tried airplane mode on and off, even took the battery out and put it back in but still the 'R' is there above the signal bars even though I'm not roaming. Any more suggestions? Thanks

Have you turned off roaming in the settings?
Sent From My HTC Sensation using Xda premium App
What network does it say you are logged onto? Is it the one you expect?
I have a prepaid card in an old Samsung Tocco I use to call abroad. The network is the one I'm expecting and the "R" is always there in a smartphone (iphone 3g, htc desire, samsung omnia 2, htc touch hd, samsung galaxy s, htc desire hd) but it doesn't appear on the Samsung sgh-480. Go figure. The brand is Vectone and it's using some local network.

Most Android phones display the "roaming"-sign with MVNO-carriers that are basically "reselling" another network. This is normal - some ROMs, like CyanogenMod have an option to activate "national roaming", as opposed to "international roaming" which will get rid of the "R"-sign. Samsung seems to have this as a default setting in its firmwares.
Whatever the reason the 'R' disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared. The correct carrier was shown, roaming was turned off, I always use a prepaid sim card and this phone is the first one to display roaming. I guess if this is the only problem that I have with the phone I should consider myself lucky .
This is in no way a problem with the phone, but default behaviour with stock Android - some manufacturers or custom ROMs just don't display national roaming.
If you are on a MVNO and the "R" is displayed, everything is working as intended.

[Q] Nexus S 4G - DATA DROPS

I have been having this problem with both of my Nexus S 4G ever since I got them 2 months ago.
My data drops out frequently and takes a while to get back up. If I have 4G enabled, then I have to manually reconnect it as it will not do it on it's own. This happens inside AND outside. Driving down the road or just standing in one spot.
I've tried all of the radios (basebands) and about 7 different ROMs and versions.
I've refreshed the data profile, PRL, and even tried the roaming Verizon PRL and Hybrid PRL.
Gone back to stock and tried everything from scratch. Still the same problem.
Dallas/Fort Worth Area
Network: Sprint
Baseband: D720SPRKE1
PRL Version: P:40447
I contacted Sprint and they just told me to update the profile & PRL.....
Any suggestions?
I'm not familiar with the CDMA nexus s, but are you able to change APN's? At one point I'd be able to connect to 3g (I have an I9020A), but every minute or so it would drop, so I fixed up the APN's for my carrier.
iv had a few data issues
forcing PRL and account updates has fixed it a couple of times
i'v bought used phones that iv had
to have sprint force update
im on LC1
[altho i cant tell any significant difference here]
and my prl is 61086

im currently on slim

is not set to home only
Am I the only one with this problem? As I'm typing this I lost data but still had 3 bars. I never drop calls but only data.
Help please. This is driving me nuts.

i go thru periods of it acting bizarre
try disabling wifi and reboot
this USUALLY fixes mine till wifi is re-enabled
and i drop the sprint connection a few times

it then fails to re-acquire the IP address.
look in your status and see if you still have an IP

does it do the same thing if you disable 4G?
I almost always have to use 4G (if possible) since 3G speeds are slower than dial-up.
I've tried rebooting and leaving 4G off, and still the same. Even tried going back to Gingerbread.

I have the same problems. From what I understand, its a problem with the hardware. I can confirm that's probably the case, because I've tried many different ROMs (stock, cm, etc...) and they all have the same radio issues (3g/4g and wifi)...
I have an NS4G in the DFW area and haven't seen the issues you're reporting. I'm currently on 4.0.4 with D720SPRLC1 baseband. Maybe I'm just lucky and have a good signal at work and home. It's very rare that I find an area of DFW where I don't get any data signal at all. Not sure what to suggest.
I get random drops too and i hate it. My 3g speeds are fairly good even above 1 mbps. Highest i ever got on 3g was 1.51 mbps
Mine will lose data if I'm in a coverage free area for an extended period of time, when I'm back in range 3g icon will show up just never reconnect. A reboot fixes it
Certain Areas
There are certain areas where I live that data just disappears. Although this is just a network thing I believe. It's weird though when I am driving it's like a 10 second drop and then all is good. Hope you get a solid fix!:victory:
Backup 4g Partition
REMOVED - was a bad idea.
I've actually replaced BOTH of the phones with brand new NS4Gs and they shipped with ICS.
Still the same problem.
This is driving me nuts. I was driving and trying to download Maps for the new phone from the Play Store and it took 6 tries. Kept saying RETRY.
What I've come to believe is happening is:
When 4G connects, 3G disconnects. When 4G drops (which is does frequently), 3G has to reconnect.
***Is there a way to keep 3G "on" in the background while 4G is connected?*** Maybe a way for the radio to transition back and forth?

HTC one S successor and UK price!

hi
looking to purchase HTC one S. Quite keen on it but a bit concerned with battery life and home screen issue.
However any ideas re its's successor? Is HTC likely to announce another line at MWC 2013? as its only a month away, i am thinking if its worth waiting for to see if the price drops to below £200!
ta
What home screen issue?
I use one and battery life is more than enough for day and half of hard use
Not sure what your referring to in regard to home issue. My battery life improved dramatically with the use of custom roms.
But don't count on a huge price drop just because of a newer phone launch. I have yet to see them do that big of price drops here in Canada on newer launches.

I believe you're referring to the home issue in this thread. It explains various ways to ensure you get a One S without the helicoptering problem. I think it's basically any One S with a serial number starting with >SH24 is okay and won't helicopter, don't take my word on it though.
I got a ceramic black One S from T-mobile on the beginning of last month and haven't had that problem even once.
Does anyone still have the problem of the data (cellular) signal dropping out occasionally, then returning after a couple of minutes? I'm on stock 4.0.3 in Canada on Bell. Hope the coming JB update fixes it.

that's not true. I have SH26 (S4) and I had to totally block home button to be able to use phone in 2g areas. I think every ONE S is affected by this, but it depands on your mobile provider signal strength/3g coverage, that's why not all experience this. otherwise HTC would be able to fix phones sent for repair, but they can't - problem always returns.

I also had problems with cellular data dropping on my One S. I live in finland and this is a common issue with this particular phone and a certain carrier. I have personally seen three One S's with this carrier and they all dropped data after using the connection for a while. Also many others have reported similar issues on a finnish forum.
What makes the problem more interesting is that it only happens in more populated areas (larger cities so maybe more traffic or better and newer networks or something...). Problems are not found from phones or networks and only "fix" seems to be changing carrier. That's what i did and have not had any problems since.
This problematic carrier roams in another carrier's network. Idk if this has something to do with the problem but this carrier is the only consumer carrier that roams here in finland and also the only one with this issue.

I've got an upgrade due. T-Mobile UK have pulled sales of the One S in the past week and are suggesting the 4G One SV in its place. Not exactly a successor though as except for the 4G the SV is a lower spec phone. I was offered the SV for free with a £26 3G contract.

It is definitely possible.
I'm on AT&T and have the correct APN settings and have called AT&T with my IMEI. I have significantly worse signal than with my HTC One X. I am not comparing bars to bars, but rather where the signal drops completely. In places where I had low signal but still connected I now have nothing.

T-Mobile on stock ROM i had my first signal drops.
I was fine (or at least never noticed them) from the time i got my phone (day one) without any drops here in orlando.
Drove over to Tampa/Venice Beach area this past weekend and noticed some drops. Had about 6 drops according to my battery stats in 2 days. i had good to excellent coverage the entire time except when it would drop comlpetely (outline of signal bars)
would connect in a couple seconds, but i noticed over night, it would drop for a pretty large amount of time (like 10-15 minutes at a time.)
Mmm defo seems like were all having the same issues, wonder what it could be
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I had this issue too, and here's how I fixed it:
By default LTE is enabled, meaning the phone will periodically scan for a LTE network. If you're in a big city, you're likely to find one. Your phone will attempt to connect. However, it fails, meaning it will have to rescan the HSPA bands to connect back. That results in a few seconds of no service. Why can't it connect to LTE? Because by default, the APN is not the LTE APN, for Rogers at least. I'd assume AT&T would be the same. You can test this by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, selecting phone info, and selecting LTE only. You'll see that there is no service. I tested this in an area I knew had great LTE coverage, and that led me to the conclusion that it's LTE causing the signal drops.
So how to fix? Simple, just change your APN to the LTE APN for your carried. To do that go to Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. If you're experiencing this issue on Rogers, change the APN field to ltemobile.apn. If you're on another carrier, you'll have to search for their LTE APN configuration.
After doing this your phone should start connecting to LTE again, and you won't get those annoying signal drops.

So yeah the next update will probably fix the issue. It's not so bad in the meantime, Lightflow sill notify you that your nexus has lost signal, and you still get the internet and incoming calls.
We're not alone. Supposedly Google is "aware" of the issue.
i've hcanged my setting from '4g' to '3g' to see if i notice a difference (hopefully will) then when 4g is released or i get a 4g sim, can move it back up
Yes, I'm having issues too. The real problem is the fact that I have a Wilson cell booster in my home (supposed to have up to 5000 square foot range) and my n4 had full bars most everywhere inside. With my n5 It shows 1 to 2 bars if I'm lucky and quite often drops to none! The only way to get full bars Is to stand right under the indoor antenna. Not impressed, and I sure hope this is fixable!

I hate to revive a dead thread, but I was wondering if people were still having problems. Once or twice during the day that I can see I will lose signal for a few seconds only to have it reconnect. Running 4.4.2 so the latest update did nothing to help the problem as far as I can see and I have messed with my APN settings. On AT&T. The Google thread seems to have a lot of different problems on the same thread, and it is a bit unclear if people are still having this problem. This is very annoying for such an otherwise spectacular phone. Thanks and sorry again for reviving the thread... :fingers-crossed:

Appreciate the speedy reply. Hope Google gets on this fast. I also have LTE connection issues which has plagued both this and my original device so I am pretty sure its a radio issue. The phone loves to stay on HSPA+ even when there is a decent LTE connection: it's last in the pack to connect to LTE and first to disconnect when compared to others on AT&T.

My N4 with a combo radio sticks to LTE a tad better than my N5 with stock radio. Sadly, morrislee hasn't fiddled and combo'd N5 radios, and I'm not sure they've been tested and sussed out like the N4 radios. Citing the fact some with issues have flashed all the radios so far with minimal success means we wait for Qualcomm, after Google kicks them in the you know where.

[Q] No signal strength all of a sudden

Hello,
I bought my Nexus 5 on the 11th of December 2013 and it had been working flawlessly ever since. Since last week, I started noticing the occasional signal drop and I'd be out of cell reception but would usually be back up within no time. However, yesterday, out of the blue I'm travelling on the highway and my signal strength disappears never to come back again. I've tried the following:
- Restore old backup (including EFS)
- Went back to stock from PA
- Upgraded to the latest radio
- Took back cover off to see if anything was wrong but found nothing.
- Tried another SIM card
Nothing worked. My SIM card works fine in another phone. Everything else such as WiFi and Bluetooth works flawlessly but I just don't get any reception.
This is very disappointing and I have my fingers crossed hoping someone can help me with this since I didn't plan on getting a new device for at least another year especially after paying $520 USD for my phone here in my country.
Thank you for looking.
im having a similar problem with the radio after the last few otas. im getting a lot of dropped calls on 3g aws...
im going to try to revert to an old radio as i don't think this is a hardware failing issue..

just wanted to post my fix for this issue - very disappointed with Google that i had to do this...my provider is mobilicity canada (3g aws band fyi)
flash krt01b radio from this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514095
this is *not* a carrier or hardware issue (at least in my case)
seems others are having same issue

Then it is a carrier issue....cause on Telus in Canada....never had an issue with any radio version. ?
telus would have a stronger overall signal but uses AWS band for lte which is different than mobilicitiy 3g aws...
I'm not disagreeing.... Just saying its the carrier....not Google.
See my point?

are you saying mobilicitiy is purposely weakening their cell signal cause they are almost bankrupt ?
i still blame google i had no issues with the radio before they borked it...

Just saying that unless many have the issue with the phone or radio, then its an issue.....if not, it isnt .
So in this case, it leaves hardware or carrier....assuming a stock flash didn't help.
If flashing another radio helps the OP...awesome!! But the new radio does work fine for the mass majority.
Hope it does work for him tho!
