[Q] Emulator for running android apps on wp7!!! - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I heard sometwhere that there is an emulator that can run android apps on WP7.
I have a samsung omnia w.And due to lack of many functionalities in it I was hoping if there was an emulator for it.
I have also searched internet to full unlock it but couldnt find.
And also there is no seperate thread for samsung omnia w on xda.
Plz reply
thanks in advance

It is my understanding that the only way to currently obtain a full unlock is to use a custom ROM. Since the Omnia W (aka: Focus Flash) does not have its own thread. It's likely that there's nothing for it yet.
It is also my understanding that the way WP7 is set up (all apps are sandboxed), that you'd be better off getting an android device if you want to run android apps.
What you need is a dev who has his/her hands on the device and who wants to try to get up into it.
Good luck!

No such thing

Would be interesting to know exactly where you heard that. No, there isn't such an emulator to run Android apps on top of WP7. Maybe you confuse this with certain attempts of RIM to run Android apps on their PlayBook tablet, after a "repackaging".

A few questions about devices

Before I start, yes I did look around, and the best I found were unanswered questions, but if someone can link me to some answers I would much appreciate it.
Anyway my questions mostly deal with unlocking. Now I've heard about ChevronWP7, but, as far as I can tell, it's only for a jailbreak type of 'unlock' rather than the traditional carrier unlocking, is that correct?
If so, is there a free way to unlock phones to use on different carriers?
Also, if a phone is already carrier unlocked, will the lock return when syncing with a computer?
Finally, if I were to get a phone just for development, would I need to use it as a phone at all (meaning have a SIM card inserted), or could I just treat it like an iPhone's iPod Touch?
Thanks in advanced
ChevronWP7 unlocks a phone, so you can install applications from other sources than marketplace. For example, develop your own application, and install it on phone.
Official way: Pay 99$ for MS, to be able to do that.

Thanks, that's what I figured. But as a student, I get it free anyway. Do you know the answers to my other questions?
Also, if I were to get an HD2 and install Windows Phone 7 on that, would I be able to use the marketplace and develop applications on that?
To develop apps you dont need the phone just the SDK and the emulator.

I know, I actually have a few apps up already. But the emulator only goes so far, you don't get to see how your apps look in the marketplace and you don't get to try out competing apps. The main reason I want a device now is because I'm working on a game and the emulator doesn't have multi-touch capabilities and in general it can be sluggish

If you're saying the game performs sluggishly in the emulator, it's much more likely that you have a memory leak or performance problem with your game, assuming your computer isn't slow.
If you want the apps on the phone you're going to either need to use ChevronWP7 (which will stop working after this next patch although apparently Microsoft will release or allow some sort of homerbrew solution after that patch) or get the dev unlock. Unfortunately, if you're in the App Hub through DreamSpark, they don't check your ID (which is required to get an unlock) until you try to submit your first app. This means you either have to upload a dummy app (which counts against your 5 free submissions) or you have to build an app entirely based on the emulator.
In terms of carrier unlock, I don't believe there is a free solution, but I'm entirely unsure about that.

It runs okay, but not as smooth as when I run it natively in Windows. This one is just a board game, I ran a more complex game I was working on in the past and it also ran fullspeed in Windows but was quite sluggish in the emulator. I know there are differences in the way the platforms handle memory, but I'm a pretty careful coder, I'm pretty sure it's more to do with the fact that the whole Windows Phone 7 dev kit is still quite new.
Anyway, I'm still thinking of going with the HD2 option. Would I be able to register that as a dev phone? If not how about ChevronWP7?
i think it was suggested earlier but you register your windows live account as a dev account (to activiate requires you to submit an app). once that's done, the phone automatically unlocks and works as a dev phone. i still don't agree on using HD2 as the basis of your dev phone, but i understand your lack of finances.

I like the idea of getting an HD2 just because of it's versatility, I could put Android on it if I wanted to try developing for that platform, the only thing stopping me is the fact that WP7 for HD2 will probably hit a snag when 7.1 comes out and I'd be stuck on the emulator again.
Actually I could get a proper Windows Phone, I just don't like paying for data. I just want to run it on WiFi and use it like an iPod touch. That's why I wanted to know if the device works fine without a SIM card or will it not let you do anything until you insert one? Surely owners of a device could answer this question.

yes it can be used wifi only.
Now I'm reading from some places that you need to be on 3G to install Apps from the marketplace, true?
Never had a data plan as we have city wide wifi and i have all the apps I want

Out of curiosity, what phones are you guys using?
Edit: Doh, just saw the Venue in your signature. Has T-Mobile ever bothered you about not having data?
Not once, they can't tell... I have an HD7, a venue pro, 2 focus' one quantum, and one surround. I'm a major fan

[Q] Collaboration to Port android to wm8650

Good Day Everyone,
I have been searching the forums for a few days and installed a number of apk's all of which don't seem to work.
There seems to be so many posts on Chinese tablets and getting Android Market to work. And a number of work arounds that I have tried have so far been unsuccessful. Many of us have bought the WM8650 models (VIA8650,High-performance 800MHZ CPU+300MHZ).
So my question is can't we collaborate as a group who own these tablets to donate an amount (say $10 or $20 each) to the developer that ports an Android version which runs all the Google apps and Market?
That way we won't have to look for workarounds, and those who purchase after us will have a much easier upgrade path.

I have the wm8650 and can't access to the android market, even though there is an icon for it. I get an error that says, "Authentication error. Please check your account/password". Have you figured out the problem yet?
Not yet
Hi guytimes.
The Android Market apk that I loaded won't open, however it seems the pre-loaded Market app on the device only shows applications from China(did not return any results when I searched for Angry Birds). The icons look similar but I'm not sure if the pre-loaded app goes to the Official Android Market place.(If someone knows, please could you correct me?).
In the interim, to at least to get some apps loaded, I managed to get the application from Slideme ( an Android application website) which works well. It does not have all the apps on the official Market but it will let you download and install. I am still trying to find a way to get the Google apps and Market place working or to Port a different ROM to this type of device.

Wow, that stinks. I had no idea the marketplace was blocked on these devices. Please let me know if you find a real work around and I'll do the same.
Hi everyone,
I too opt-in for a possible collaboration.
I'm still waiting my baby to arrive.
Thanks
Thank you boshkop,
Let's hope we can get enough people to agree. And then a technical person to port Android for us.
By the way I found another nice app market at Androidpit
What do you mean by "porting the Android"?! The device already runs Android 2.2!! Am I missing something here?

As far as I understood, he meant that Android market doesn't work and no apps can be installed even via .APK files, am I correct?
I just found a possible solution for the AndroidMarket (using the application Applanet).
Check here (the last post):
androidpit.com/en/android/forum/thread/420722/Table-7-wm8650-VIA-926-REVIEW
I have this tablet and I can tell you, it run 90% of the apk aplications
No need to have an android market. You can install the applanet market and get all free without registration and any complicated steps.
Now the only thing I'm searching is to know how to root the tablet.
I can access all the system files directly and edit any archive but need some special permisions.
Hopefully soon we can find soemthing for this awesome tablet.
rom
Hi everyone, I will have a ROM posted for the Eken m009s with the via 8650 cpu within the next few days, so far I removed the chinese apk's, a different lockscreen (froyo default), and launcher pro as the default home screen, also, Slide Me marketplace works perfectly on this, and Applanet does as well, the market I tried also fails to open.

Unfortunately there are at least 3-4 models with same tech specs.
The only difference is their LED color or if they vibrate on startup or not...
So far, the only way with the custom ROMs for these tablets is trial-and-error.
I tried on last night and it is stuck on a loading screen tried the install again and nothing... mine has green led and does vibrate on startup

[Q] Control my Android Device via second Android Device?

Hello Folks,
i have a simple question, but haven´t found anything on google.
I have a HTC OneX and many other older and smaller Android Devices. Now I´m started to ask myself it is possible to control my "big" Onex with a little Device like the Wildfire S. Is there an App for pairing two Android Devices and get notifications and Messages from one to another? I don´t want to use a Browser-based App.
Thx so far for your comments

You could try Droid VNC server. Check it out on Google Play. I havent tried it from Android to Android but I think it should work.

A question on the possibility of using desktop applications with rooted phones?

Hello guys,
So I have rooted my tablet and enjoyed the perks of rooting. I haven't rooted my phone yet because I am planning on buying another one but before I do that I want to ask something about rooting. I know that several people used LinuxDeploy and rooting to get Linux distro up and running. Just wondering if this would allow us to use desktop applications on an android device? I was thinking that since I do alot of analysis work for my engineering research projects that if I can use my phone to run some programming codes, matlab, CAD and maybe even OpenFoam? So I am wondering if rooting and using linux would allow me to fully utilize the SOC and maybe run desktop grade software when I am on the go or in a meeting showing something? Most vanilla andriod apps aren't robust enough to allow me to open and edit script files or 3d models/analysis data?
I want to attempt to try this on my nexus 7 (first generation) as a proof of concept?
Also if I use it for this purpose, can I still run my paid applications and google play services on a rooted device normally?
Thanks

While you can run a Linux distro on an android device and even run some desktop applications anything heavy will generally not run or run very poorly so it depends on what applications you want to run and the power of your android device.

Is rooting and/or modifying my tablet worths the trouble?

Hello everyone i have a question for you that will make a choice for me to root/modify/upgrade (or whatever you guys doing) my tablet or just leave it alone.
First of all i have a Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition tablet running Android 4.0.4. I have software and hardware experience on pc windows and linux but not so much on android.
My main problem with my tablet is its running Android 4.0.4 and when i tried to install apps (especially multimedia apps like netflix , bein connect and youtube) it says my device is not compatible. And in general my tablet feels slower to when i bought it first time about 5 years ago.
My questions are;
1-Would i be able to upgrade android to newer editions at least android 5.0.0? I am asking this because my phone has android 5.0.0 and i have no problems with apps as of now.
2-If i root/modify android can i run apps like netflix and youtube or there are more problems waiting?
3-Would modifying help the speed of tablet or would it slow it down even more? Like trying to install windows 8 on a windows xp level of pc.
I'm asking these because i dont want to spend days just to find out it was not the answer i was looking for.
I hope i made myself clear please add any suggestion or roadmaps for a newbie like me. Thanks in advance.
Technically rooting doesn't allow you to upgrade your version of Android, it's the custom recovery you install that does. If there's a custom ROM out there that supports your old tablet it will work. Youtube is unaffected by root and I don't think Netflix is either. Finally, rooting technically could help the speed of your tablet if you change things like disabling fsync or running TRIM, but rooting itself doesn't change performance. Just be warned that there might not be a Lollipop or newer custom rom for your tablet!
