[Q] [ANDROID] ROOT HELP: Motorola Backflip with MAC OSX

Hello All:
I have had lots of fun learning from you guys and lurking. I have modified my homescreen and love running Go Launcher EX on my backflip. But now, I need more!
I have tried, without success, to root my Motorola Backflip on Mac. So I've come to the experts. I know its not the best android phone, but it's what I have until I am eligible for upgrade.
I have searched and found similar threads with no answers. Perhaps they were overlooked. I cannot use unrevoked because I own a Backflip.
Is there anyone here who has done it and can help? I would like to root, overclock and perhaps whatever the most stable Cyanogen rom is?
It is currently running the Motorola provided 2.1 upgrade with a few apps.
I am on Mac OSX 10.5
MB300
BLUR Version: 3.0.1390
Firmware. 2.1 -update1
Kernel: 2.6.29
Build number ERD70
I have downloaded ADB / SDK for Mac as well.
Thank you all, Any help is appreciated.
Surely one of the XDA geniuses has a solution to this...right?
Hey, I have neither the phone or a Mac but since I'm prepping to upgrade my friend's backflip from 1.5(!) to whatever the most stable rom is, this caught my attention.
I don't have any direct experience to offer you, but I have thought of a workaround to at least get you on a similar page as everyone else.
Your issue is that you have a Mac combined with a very unpopular phone so you really can't find simple easy solution to rooting and Rom(ing) your phone so I'm thinking that if you can switch your platform to something with universal instructions you can then go to the basics of using ADB to root your phone as I'm sure that there are guides for that.
So I'm thinking that you would use Ubuntu or an Ubuntu deriviative (as there are a few guides about achieving root and ADB through Ubuntu) and then find instructions for rooting your phone through ADB. It's a little bit of a workaround, but it's not as complicated as it sounds.
Best thing about this method is that you don't have to change anything to your computer as you can use a live CD or a Live USB to run Ubuntu from and then when you're done remove the disc or USB and reboot your computer and you're right back to your normal Mac experience.
First thing you'll need is to find an Ubuntu version that you want to use. I'd recommend 10.10 as 11.04 has some bugs from what I hear and instead of using Vanilla Ubuntu, use one of the skinned versions that come with lots of the visual and effective tasks already implemented (Sort of like HTC Sense over stock Android 1.6) I use Pinguy OS, click here for the review or a really popular version is Linux Mint.
Once that's done, look up instructions for using a Live CD on a Mac. Here's a Set
(You only need to do Step 2 & 3 once you download Linux Mint or Pinguy OS)
Now once you finally have Ubuntu/Pinguy/Linux Mint running,
review this Thread here on getting ADB set up for Ubuntu.
After that, you should be able to find instructions for rooting the Backflip using ADB and then you can play with Rom's to your hearts content.
Okay, I know this looks complicated but it's really pretty simple, it's more reading than actual work.
Read and learn about Ubuntu/Pinguy OS/Linux Mint
Download Version of your choice to a USB or a DVD
Boot into a Live version
Follow ADB in Ubuntu instructions to install it
Find out how to root your phone
Root Phone
Download Rom to root of card and install, enjoy and have fun.
Just remember that do all of your reading before you start, don't get confused about the different versions of Ubuntu because Ubuntu is just the basic not quite as pretty while Pinguy OS and Linux Mint are Ubuntu with some nice gloss and etc...and finally remember that nothing gets saved on your Live USB or Live CD so once you restart the computer, it's all gone so make sure you are rooted and satisfied before you exit the Session.
Once you get all the reading done and comprehended, it's probably not more than 15 minutes of work, if I wasn't in the process of moving, I'd follow the directions as best as I could to see how it works, but I probably won't be stable until next weekend at the earliest.
Good luck.
I thought about doind somethign like that but its just seemed like a REALLY roundabout way of doing something that looks so simple.
I will hold out for a more simple solution but if nothing comes up I guess that may be my only option...
Thanks
Sorry I couldn't come up with something that was more direct, but that was the only way I could think of to help you.
Why don't you try here? This Site is much more active for the Backflip and maybe you can get some better assistance.
i have a moto backflip rooted and running cyanogenMod 6 and it was a pain in the ass to root and have the rom put on. if you google "update motorola backflip 2.2" you should see something with the name "tech geek guy". he gives u step by step procedure to loading the rom. since we have a moto backflip, we cant use the z4root since the backflip doesnt allow outside market apps to be installed. but once u have this rom on your device, u can install outside apps. anyways. u have to use the one click method or watever its called. i used a pc and not a mac so this is as much info as i can give u. sorry.
GOOGLE DOES WONDERS PEOPLE. USE IT. : )

[Q] OS X-related root question

I've gone through these forums and searched Google to figure out how to root the MT4GS using OS X, and I'm coming up empty.
I've read about the route using HTC Sync, but that seems to be Windows specific.
People see to point to using revolutionary.io, but it only has a Windows and Linux install. The only suggestion I've come across is installing Ubuntu (or Windows, but usually Ubuntu) inside of Virtual Box and doing it from there.
So I'm wondering if this is the route I need to take or if I'm missing something in the tutorials that makes this easier than I think. I've gotten S-OFF and root on my last phone (G2), so I'm familiar with the process. I just seem to be having some difficulty with this phone.
Again, my apologies for posting yet another rooting question / thread. I just haven't found anything specifically calling out OS X and figured (read: hoped) this might be helpful to others.

Yes, you'll need to find a linux or windows machine to attain S-OFF on your doubleshot. As a big Mac guy myself, I found the easiest thing to do is to just partition your hard drive and use rEFit to manage a dual-boot environment with a widely-used distro like Ubuntu.
Alternatively, should you have a legitimate license for Windows, you can use the Boot Camp Assistant app in your Utilities folder to partition your hard drive and install Windows.
But right now there is just no [easy/clear-cut/simple/realistic] way to attain S-OFF using *only* OS X.

[Q] Remove Windows on Netbook and Run Android

I know you can use different virtual applications that will allow a person to run Android on a Windows device. For example:
http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-install-and-run-android-4.0-on-mac-windows-pc-or-linux-tutorial/
What I'm wondering is . . . is it possible to remove the Windows OS on a netbook and run Android 4.0 instead? If so, does someone have a link they can point me to?
*BUMP* Anyone?
Yes, it's possible. Just burn an ISO with Android-x86 (ICS RC1), delete all the partitions you have on your netbook and then create two - one ext3 for Android (4-8GB should be ok) and one fat32 for your data. Then boot Android installer and install on ext3 partition. And yes, it can boot as a normal system.
Teoretically it should work. Don't know if there are any more things to do.
Thanks for the info, so you're saying it's possible to dual boot, windows or Android, just as long as I have the partitions set up correctly? Has anyone else done this? If so, do you have a link to a tutorial or thread? I appreciate the help!
I might try to do this when my I disconnect service to my netbook. Is the android version that is installed rootable?

For what I see, Android x86 comes with the SU command, so it's already rooted.
Hell yea. Since there isnt a boot loader there is no need for unlockig either.

You probably want your data partition something other than FAT32, because it has problems with larger files...
Android-x86.org
There i got 4.0 fully ru.ning on pc

It is indeed possible, I have done it. If you have the partitions setup right the installation is pretty straight forward, it asks if you have Windows so it's dualboot capable, it will install GRUB and add the Android and Windows items to it for you.
Format your hard drive to ext, then install the Android-x86 project.

You really don't even have to do this, you can install it to a FAT32 partition (I think even an NTFS. But by doing so you can't have root.

not sure the point of this , I **** canned WIN7 on my netbook and put Kubuntu on it and it flies now , Windows slowed it down, but Android I dont think would do anything for me, its like running Windows 8 on a desktop (which I am doing right now because I dont have an ARM available)

Windows 8 consumer preview is not that bad on a desktop but Android is indeed not that useful on a desktop at all. Although on a laptop of any kind, it's pretty nice as an instant on.

Well if thats the case just download the app Bluestacks, then you can keep Windows and run all your android apps in a second! Personally speaking , on the netbook ,windows uses too many resources for it to be useful , Kubuntu only uses what you want and therefore is far superior (on this platform)

The unofficial galaxy s3 linux support thread

I just wanted to start this thread for anyone who needs help with the s3 on linux whether its mounting sd/mtp or help with heimdall. I use Arch linux and let me tell you mtp is a pain in the butt, I ended up having to use a ftp server, and for my sd card I use a root ap called SG USB MASS STORAGE ENABLER by Mohhamad Abu-Garbeyyeh.

I'm using Ubuntu but there's no way I'm playing with my phone on it - I have a Windows partition just for that sort of thing. Maybe if it weren't my daily driver, I'd be willing to give it a shot but, while I use Linux for just about everything, it's just easier to have a Windows partition for some things. This being one of them.
Hats off to you though - takes guts (& knowledge) I don't have!

A couple of things I have found:
1. While MTP did not work with my Mint 15 system and stock android 4.1.2 on my phone, once I rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and installed cyanogenmod, it worked like a charm.
Before, when I plugged in my phone, I would get multiple error windows saying the MTP system wasn't available. I had to use windows (yuck!) and odin to get root and unlock the bootloader (although I did not try the virtualbox windows until after I had done this). I installed the most recent version of cyanogenmod and now the Mint system recognizes the MTP just fine. No error windows or anything.
2. I was able to get a virtualbox windows machine to recognize the phone, although it required different usb filters for download mode and for typical mtp.
This required going into download mode, selecting the appropriate filter in virtualbox, unplugging the phone, booting up the virtual machine and then replugging the phone. After this, odin recognized the phone. I did not attempt to flash anything further, though, since I had already done so from a windows system.
I think Ubuntu ships with mtp and its libraries now
I used to use arch Linux. Such a fun distro. Then work started using a TS gateway and it started become too much a hassle. Installed Windows 8, no longer fighting the system :screwy:

What do you mean you have a windows partition? I have a laptop that's quad booted with Windows 7, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Pear OS 8. I want to take Windows out of the picture but I need it for things like this. Could you give me more details on this like does it act like a windows system? It'd be much appreciated.

[Q] How do I get started with Linux ?

So guys I am new to Linux and the OpenSource ideology. Is there a ' - for Dummies' kind of guide which you people know of so that I can get started. I have questions in mind like - "How is Linux different from Windows ?". So, to cut a long story short, how and from where do I get started ?
(By the way, I am running Ubuntu Linux in a virtual machine via vmware player. So until I am comfortable enough with Linux, I can't even think of installing it directly onto my hard drive.)

You can look at the Ubuntu wiki, which is very well made and self-explanatory.
I think the Ubuntu wiki is a good place to start for those high-level questions. I'd also highly recommend at least getting comfortable with using the command line. You don't need to learn every command, but it's a very useful tool.
Try using www.linuxsurvival.com
I'm sure it will help you.

I would recommend you install Gentoo or Arch to learn the fastest. Installing ubuntu is too "easy"
