How to unlock any phone (almost) 100% free - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I have been searching the internet extensively trying to learn how to do this... And i found it. First of all, the companies that provide "unlock codes" have only one source to go to (at least legally) to gain these unlock codes that are unique to the MID and that is the phones manufacturer. But being that they sold the phones to provider X (being whatever provider relevant) The rights to unlock them are technically theirs (in most cases) And because you OWN the phone, and its legal to unlock them, your provider (technical support) will unlock it (if you own it) ... youre welcome.
So in a nutshell, if its a Verizon phone, call Verizon and they will unlock it. This is all those rip off companies do.
Oh yeah and by the way: The reason im posting this is because i see so many threads on "how do i do it?" and people keep referring them to "theres a company..."

The only issue is that most carriers have a period of time, usually six months or so, after the release of a phone before they will provide the code to you. That is why people go the route of paying for the code from a third party or trying to figure a way out to do it by editing files on the phone itself

They may provide the code but they really don't want to. Phone providers don't want you to unlock your phone because they want you to use your phone with their network.

The codes relevant are the same codes they acquire from the manufacturer. These companies are simply "middle men" if its illegal to unlock the phone (patents, corporate contracts, etc...) then they will say no, until such a time. But they will also say no to the 3rd party.

In at least some cases, the companies selling codes do so using their own code generators. They reverse engineer the algorithms used by carriers, then calculate it themselves from your IMEI. And as said above, carriers often have limits as to when you can get your phone unlocked. It is not illegal to unlock it before this point, the carrier just won't give you the code. You can get the code from another source perfectly legally at this point. Or you can unlock by some sort of hack, depending on your phone.

General Question About IMEI Unlocking

I have always wondered, with all these services for unlocking phones via IMEI, how does this generally work. I mean, sure we know the carriers have either the codes or the specific algorithms used to obtain the codes by IMEI. However, how to all these services get their hands on either? Also, if they are so easily obtained (judging by the number of services claiming the ability to unlock phones), why is it so hard for an average person to obtain one without paying a service to do it? Are they only sold/obtained in batches of IMEI's, perhaps being prohibitively expensive for one person? If the algorithims used are known, which they must be by someone other than the carriers, then why can't someone just write software to accomplish the task? Say some opensource developers. I know there are plenty of those who would give such software away free if possible.
Some things I have always wondered about IMEI unlocking. Basically, how can all these services to it, but a person cannot?
Moving to Q&A area.
Thats the question that has me somehow frustrated the last days! Specially since I moved to Blackberry, which is like very dumb plat, I cant believe that kind of basic hacking is so much underwraps.
Hai i will help You,You cannot i mean a normal person cannot get the unlock code,It's based on the Network Database and network provider only generate the code based on Mobile Phone IMEI Number and Model...So they have code in their Data base, they can't guess by others,so you need to pay for it..Nowadays some persons have develop some calculators and programs and to generate a default code based on IMEI,But it will not work always,so payable cost is best for PDA phones for Normal Nokia DCt Phones and other old phones free code is useful...Others cannot generate the unlock code default method..It's too hard,Here Unlocking4free.com/unlock-your-phone you can get the unlock code for some mobile phones at free of cost and unlock it.

is cincinnati bell lying?

i sent cbw an email with the intent to obtain the sim unlock code for my milestone, based off a post on their facebook page. here is the email i sent to them:
while perusing your facebook page i find a gentleman named ___ that posted this:
"Does Cincinnati Bell have the unlock code for the Blaze? I may be traveling internationally soon and would like to use other carriers' SIM cards when overseas."
your response was:
"Hi ___- Email us your wireless # and IMEI to [email protected] Thanks!"
i called a few months ago for the EXACT same reason and was denied unlocking my milestone xt720. how can this be rectified? i also travel abroad and would like to have the phone THAT I PAID FOR unlocked as to be able to use other sim cards.
thanks

here is the response i recieved:
Thanks for the note. Motorola maintains the unlock profiles for the XT720 Milestone. The Cincinnati Bell Blaze is one of our OEM designs, therefore managed by Cincinnati Bell. I would contact Motorola US with your IMEI to pursue unlocking the device.

ive called motorola and they told me that the CARRIERS are the ones that have the unlock codes. who is lying (my guess - cbw) and how am i supposed to unlock this thing?
I think carriers should have it but I could be wrong. When I wanted to unlock my old phone from Wind (my carrier) I called them up and they gave the code to me.
I would try calling up CBW and speaking to a different person. The one who replied to you could just be confused.
The unlock is not part of the firmware, it is held much deeper in the phone. I would tend to believe the carrier and assume that the manufacturer would be able to unlock this phone. I really hope I am wrong though, for your sake.
Hi usually you have to be like 6 months+ and some time up 9 months into contract.
Call 611 and tell them you will be the country don't deal service tech they don't no much of anything.

One of the things that Dexter does to his ROMs that I haven't figured out yet is that he moves /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default/sim_lock_init to /system/etc/motorola/sim_lock_init. I do know that /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default is part of the baseband system and I also know that not all of Motorola's XT720 ROMs have sim_lock_init (in fact of the 9 XT720 sbf's I've collected only CBW's sbf has it, both Korean ROMs both have it). I don't have a non-CBW SIM, so I don't know if that does anything and Google hasn't really been much help to me on that. If you have a non-CBW SIM, maybe you can try using one of Dexter's ROMs and see if it is actually SIM locked or not. I honestly have no idea, though. I do know that I flashed the UK sbf once and it refused to let me use the phone unless there was a SIM present (but it accepted my CBW SIM--I have two XT720 now but only one sim). The CBW and Korean sbfs on the other hand let you use the phone without a SIM. Maybe that's what that file is about. I'm mostly clueless about the baseband and SIMs. But hey, it has "sim" and "lock" in the filename .
Do you still need an unlock code? I can get you one for this one for $14.99. They do come from Motorola and not Cincinnati Bell and the codes are not cheap like other phones.
Way to dig up a thread from 5 months ago. Not sure I want to send someone $14.99 for an unlock code in Thailand when I can go to corner store and they can unlock it face-to-face. Plus signature favors LG phones.
Seems like a Google search for "Help me unlock my phone" came up with this thread and probably many others to blanket post in them all. Dare I say.......Pimping your services?

No, not at all. Just trying to help a fellow XDA member. I offered the code at my cost with PayPal fee included. At this price I make nothing.
Also, getting your phone unlocked at a local shop is dangerous. Often these shops use special software and hardware clips that unlock your phone by patching the baseband code, which can result in a damaged or bricked device. Also when the phone is unlocked by a firmware patch such as this the phone can no longer get OTA updates as the baseband code will no longer pass a validation check (MD5) during the update process.
Unlocking remotely by IMEI is much safer. Remote unlocking servers, such as the ones we subscribe to, retrieve the unlock codes directly from the manufacturers databases that the carriers use. By entering the unlock code assigned to the phone at the factory at the time of manufacturer is the only safe way to unlock a phone. Once you enter the code the phone is unlocked permanently with no potential for damage. Plus the phone can still get OTA updates as the baseband code remains untouched.
Go ahead. Let some hack at a local shop damage your phone by patching the baseband code. Great idea, not!

[Q] HTC One X Abroad

Hey everyone,
I will be traveling to Italy this summer for several weeks and am interested in using the phone for emergency calls within the country.
I understand there are prepaid sim cards sold within Italy however the phone must be unlocked in order to use another carrier's sim card.
So to sum it up, is it possible to unlock the HTC One X to be used abroad and if so, where do you guys recommend I unlock it? Is it possible to do it on your own?
This will be my first time unlocking so yes I hate myself.
On a side note I had an At&t sales associate tell me that I won't be able to unlock the HTC One X until six months upon activation and also that international sim cards won't fit into the HTC One X. I'm guessing neither of those are true but what do you think?
Can't unlock the AT&T phone yet. You'll have to borrow/rent another phone. Sorry.
Err... I was speaking about unlocking the bootloader, which isn't even relevant to your question. I'm going to sleep.

There is currently no way to SIM unlock yourself (for the typical user). Many paid unlocking services are failing to unlock the AT&T ONe X so far, but apparently, the service on the following post can do it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25758468&postcount=2
I have no personal knowledge of this particular service, and cannot vouch for them. Read the whole thread if you want more info.
I saw something similar on another post "htcsource. com/2012/05/how-to-sim-unlock-the-att-htc-one-x-for-free " where you can get a code generated for free through At&t but I am not sure if that will totally work out.
There are also a bunch of sites that claim to provide a code as well but they don't look too reliable and have several comments claiming the codes did not work.

AT&T will not supply SIM unlock codes for any "exclusive" phones for a period of 10 months after the phone's release, and I think that includes the One X. And the article mistakenly said "you must have an account in good standing (60 days of active service with a pre-paid account)" but it should say post paid.
I think the 10-month exclusivity period is what the sales associate was attempting to refer to.
You can try to call AT&T and ask. I'm guessing they won't give it to you, but if you call, let us know the results.
Also, according to the following webpage, any European carrier that has the iPhone will also have MicroSIMs. So they should have them in Italy, but it wouldn't hurt to do a little more research on this.

[Q] Will pay for help to unlock

I'm looking for someone, who'll help to unlock two sim-locked Droid2 Global. I already tried unlock codes from unlock services - but they didn't work. Both phones have Verizon codes, not Motorola factory.
I would like to pay a person, who can call to VZW Global Support to unlock them.
First, it's impossible to unlock two devices simultaneously (you'd need the help of two different VZW users for that). You only get one unlock every 10 months, which means the person who calls for an unlock for you forfeits their unlock option for 10 months.
Second, the phone must be activated on a VZW line of service.
There are other requirements. Try getting past these two first.
i can help you, i have a real verizon contact who sells the REAL codes, $43 trough paypal, guaranteed, i tried at last 8 codes from different sellers and i found the real one!
43? That's worth half the phone
and I thought that ~$20 for an unlock code was expensive (seller claims to have new database ebay) << Tried and doesn't work, seller just refunded my money..

So do you have access to Verizon's DB? As the poster said, these phones have had their codes changed from the Motorola settings.

They don't necessarily give you one unlock code every 10 months. I got a used droid 2 global from Ebay activated it on my line they unlocked it. Less than a week later I called them and got the unlock code for my own incredible 2 also activated on same line. I only have 1 line of service. Both times I had to be kicked up to their "Unlock department" because I didn't have a foreign sim. I have had Verizon service for 3 years come dec. so maybe that had something to do with it.
Well, maybe you will agree to help me with my phone for some payment - or maybe both of them in future?

CM10 network sim lock?

I'm on the stable build of CM10 and running boot 1.09.
Currently in china and trying to use a china unicom sim card.
As soon as I install the sim card, I get popup asking for sim unlock code. Nothing seems to work and it keeps saying that my device is "network sim locked".
Does anyone have experience resolving this?

This means that the phone is locked to a different carrier. You either have to pay the network that the phone is locked to by purchasing their networks sim cards and putting the amount they want onto the account and then giving you the unlock code. Also you only have so many attempts to put in that code before you only have the phone company to go to in order to get a code. You can get an unlock code (I have been told) from a third party unlocking site.
But I haven't succeeded before with either paying the phone company or via third party. I bought a Rogers phone from a customer on a contract gave them a phone they are now still using on their contract and had them say more than once \i could do it and after paying the money they said it couldn't be done. I don't know how reliable the online sites that ask for money are either. I couldn't get the site to take my prepaid VISA, I went to a site that a member on here posted a link to.
And I generally don't trust as much when credit card numbers and identity information is asked for. In fact the only success I have ever had with unlocking a phone has been by doing it myself via the tutorials on this site. So my advice, when they do come up with a way to remove the simlock on the OneX and I am 100% sure that they will sooner or later. You can use the tutorial they provide. And as it is more and more refined the how-to's will become simpler and simpler. Take a look at all the oneclick solutions there are for devices now and then look at the older how-to's for the same ones. This site is definitely the best I have seen. And has some great people putting in a lot of work. I am grateful for it. Anyway I ramble on sometimes so bye, Good luck man
*NOTE: In some circumstances depending in country of origin there maybe no charge for the code if it is not on a contract aka pay-as-you-go, prepaid, although this is rare more than likely they will want you to pay them.

The SIM unlock code is based on the phone's unique IMEI number, and is therefore required to get the code, if that is the identity information you are talking about.
If they don't get your credit card info, do you expect them to do it for free? You can find services that use Paypal, if that makes you feel better (or is that what you are talking about?).
Many here have used cellunlocker.net with success. If they can't unlock the phone, its simply because your phone's IMEI number is not in the code database. Sometimes, because the phone is simply too new, and other times for other odd reasons. Its not the unlock service's fault, and there isn't anything they can do about that. Any reputable service will not charge you, or refund the charges, in this case.
I used cellunlocker.net and got my code in a couple of minutes.
