cm6 !!! - Milestone XT720 General

hi everyone!!...i want to say cm6.3.7 is the best rom i have used on my milestone xt720...its fast n stable!!..and thanks to molohov new themes are available!!!...but all i wanted to ask is does the FONT CHANGER(ROOT) app work on this rom??..i have previously bricked my phone using this in cm7 so has anyone tried it??? if so plz do tell!!

I have used it with CM6, and it works very well. I've used the ubuntu font and roboto in the past.
If you're worried about bricking, make a nandroid of /system, /data and /cache (technically /cache isn't needed if you remember to "wipe cache partition" after restore). If you press and hold the volume up key (hold until bootanim starts) while powering on, you should be able to reenter openrecovery even if you end up with a bootloop.

[MOD][RECOVERY] Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions (resize Data,System and Cache)

If you dont understand what this Modification is doing, why it needs to be done, or what possible benefits come from it, then...
PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS MOD.
***Even tho it is impossible to brick your phone when flashing this i still highly recommend you UNDERSTAND what you are attempting to do before you do it. If someone explains you are freeing up internal memory from other places not using it and you still have to ask what the benefit is, then you obvisouly dont fully understand the mod and your phone and should turn away now.***
Thank You.

Now onto the mod: Heres a quick description of what this mod is doing. Pretend your phone is a pizza cut into 3 even pieces. Each piece is memory for /cache, /system, /data. Your aneroxic sister "aka cache" doesnt eat a lot so most of her slice will always be left, your fat obese brother "/data" always eats his whole slice and is left wanting more. You are healthy "/system" and only eat what you need and never less never more.
What this mod is doing is taking that original pizza and RECUTTING the slices to better fit whos eating them, so since your aneroxic sister barely eats and your obese brother is always hungry it takes all the extra pizza "aka memory" from your sister and gives it to your brother. As for you "aka /system" you only eat exactly what you need "aka the size of the rom and files it install" so it resizes your own slice to exactly the number it needs to install the rom and its gapps/files and leaves you with just a little wiggle room.
That being said, i tried this on my buddies CDMA Hero that i rooted for him and it worked like a charm. he went from something around 170mb internal storage to around 350+mb internal storage while on CM6 - Froyo 2.2.
***One thing i noticed when using a hero CDMA is that adb is crucial. one of the steps after flashing the recovery file is to reboot back into recovery and i noticed it was impossible to do it the right way without plugging your phone in and using ADB***
Original Files and Instructions: Firerats Original G1/MT3G thread found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
After you read thru firerats original instructions just know that itll be slightly different on your hero!
1. Click on the link i posted above and download these files: FR-recovery-v1.5.3-CustomMTD_S.zip and FR-boot-v1.5.3-CustomMTD_S.zip
2. Put both those files onto your SDCard.
3. While in your SDCard, make a .txt file named "mtdpartmap.txt"
4. Open your new mtdpartmap.txt file and...
- If you are using CM6 then type
Code:
mtd 102 2
- If you are using a larger Sense Rom like Fresh or ZenHero then type
Code:
mtd 182 4
5. Once all 3 files are saved on the root of your SDCard, reboot your phone into recovery
6. Format/Wipe your system and cache.
7. Flash the file: FR-recovery-v1.5.3-CustomMTD_S.zip
8. Once the file is done flashing, itll prompt you to wipe cache, system, and dalvik again.
9. Once its wiped, plug ur phone in and pull up command to adb reboot recovery (if you try to reboot into recovery any other way itll mess up the partitions and ull get cache memory.log errors and that will mean the mod didnt work correctly) by using this
Code:
adb shell
reboot recovery
10. if you did step 9 correctly, then youll get back to your recovery menu and itll say "formatting cache..." at the bottom of your screen but your recovery menu is instantly able to be used and you dont have to wait. ***On the newest version i think it no longer says this and your just got to go***
11. Flash CM6 if you used 102 for /system or Flash your larger Sense Rom if you used 182 for /system
12. Optionally, flash any kernal you may be choosing to use
13. Flash the file: FR-boot-v1.5.3-CustomMTD_S.zip
14. Click the top option on your recovery menu to reboot your system.
15. Once your system is fully booted you can go into menu > settings > sd card and internal storage , and check all the new added internal memory you have.
FYI : anytime you flash a new rom after this mod, or flash a new kernal to a currently flashed rom, you will ONLY NEED TO FLASH THE SECONDARY FIRERAT BOOT file named "FR-boot-v1.5.3-CustomMTD_S.zip".
so say after this mod you want to try a new kernal, you flash the kernal, flash boot, and reboot the system.
or say you want to flash a new cm6 nightly update, you flash the new rom/update, flash boot, reboot.
or say u want a new nightly and a new kernal, you flash the nightly, flash the kernal, flash the boot, reboot.
its very simple, if anything u flash overwrites current kernal specifications, u need to flash the boot file to make sure it knows how to set itself up. this goes for nandroid back ups aswell.
Fine Tweaking/Trouble Shooting: To get the most space you possibly can do go into adb or terminal and type
Code:
df -h
and it'll tell you what % you are using on your system. if you are at 60% then you can go ahead and decrease your /system value in your mtdpartmap.txt to about 2mb over the value it says you are using. so if your rom uses 115mb of /system you can change your mtd to "mtd 117 2".
So if you are getting an error while trying to flash a rom after doing this modification you most likely dont have enough /system space and will want to up your value to something more then enough like "mtd 200 4" then run the above code and re-scale down back to 2mb over what the current rom is using.
Enjoy CDMA users!!!
Not sure if Ill try this personally, but thank you.

Trust me, well worth it. At first i thought it was amazing gains on the g1 and mytouch, but after being the first person in the world to try it on the Sprint Hero CDMA the benefits blow all passed expectations out of the water.
It nearly doubled my buddies internal memory.
i remember on his stock rom with a handful of his favorite apps he was at around 40mb internal memory. after i rooted his phone and flashed FRESH HERO onto his phone with apps2sd he had around 150, now with this mod-cm6-apps2sd hes got over 300.
my win7 drivers are goofy and sometimes won't do adb when its in recovery mode. if you screw up the restart part - ie: can't get into adb to reboot by typing the command and those messages appear - is the device bricked or anything? Is it a one-time? Recoverable? etc...
thank you for the info. i was down to bout 20 mbs free and now well over 100. kept running into problems until i changed the cache size to a little bigger. i had a spare hero to experiment with so alls good.
Skeptical...idk why. I don't wanna risk bricking yet another Hero I guess.

Can you please enlighten us as to how you bricked your Hero?
I've been thinking about trying this. I hate having 80+ mb free in system that I can't use. Would love to just add it to /data
This won't brick your hero. The only way you can brick it is by flashing the wrong bootloader or radio. This does none of these.
Hey has anyone tried this on a different rom..

Well.....first time was an accident. First time rooting, first time messing with a phone. I just kinda jumped right into it because when I found XDA it was pretty exciting. I always support the small guy coming from small businesses my whole life. Anyway, second time was probably due to incorrectly flashing a rom or something but regardless, I went to reboot and the phone was totally unresponsive afterwards. I trust you guys though, especially the devs. So do you think it's worth a shot?
I just did it, running cm6, and it took away that extra 80mb in system, took away all that unused space in cache, and moved it all to data. I went from 20mb free (still using apps2sd mind you) to almost 200! and so far, no issues, market works fine, everything works. Just one little note: I took somethings out of /system/app before flashing both in the rom and the gapps, things I don't use, like calculator (prefer realcalc), voice search, maps, quicksearch(all updated and installed elsewhere), and I only have 3mb free in system, so you may want to see about the customizing given in firerat's thread to increase system to say 100mb (it's 90 by default)
im trying to do this mod but every time i flash the recovery all i get the htc logo and it stays there.. i am using cm6.. any help please
You don't flash a new recovery, this patches your current one. Flash the one labeled recovery like any rom.zip in the recovery, wipe everything, flash your rom or restore, then flash the boot zip as an update.

i also was stuck on the white htc screen...
can you explan which file to us.
i couldnt get this to work with clockwork recovery, so changed my recovery first to darchs 1.7.0. you have to make the custom file first and put it on your sd card. i had to have at least 10mb of cache memory specified or i got stuck on the white htc screen.
have to read firerats thread for that.

Hell yea, glad to see people flashing this mod correctly and enjoying the results!
if you end up customizing your partitions to diff sizes let all the guys know what values they should set and/or how to set them up themselves.
I dont get to use my buddies CDMA Hero a lot so i dont know how smoothly everything has been working over the past 2 days but i havent gotten any complaints or calls to fix bugs so i assume its all working very well with firerats default values but i dont know for sure.
so far ive seen these suggestions
1. up cache to 3mb
2. up system to 100mb
@danaff37, did you set your own values or are you using defaults still?
can you us this on cyanogenmod? its 2.2.... i have tryed every way and all it gets me is the white htc screen and never does on from there... please help
i checked before i flashed to see what all i was using. i had quick system info installed already so was easy for me to see. i was already using 130mb for system, prob because of dalvic-cache, so i upped it to 150mb for future use. default setting for cache was no go, changed it to 10 mb and all is fine.
I'm using default still, but downloading the latest nightly and noticed it's about 5mb bigger than before, so I'm going to go ahead and change it to 100mb when I flash it later (after I make my mods). Anybody using it should keep in mind that most rom files, the bulk of the space it takes up is in system, so be sure to partition accordingly (including gapps on aosp roms)
I left the cache at the default, try to go to /cache afterwards and it symlinks straight to /data/cache, so I don't understand how leaving it bigger would solve anything, but I've seen stranger things occur with these damn phones. lol

A step by step guide to rooting and installation of liberated Aria/froyo/cyanogen..

So.. finally i decided, its about time.. I got sick of low disk space issue and went ahead to root my phone and decided to go with Froyo. So far, I am absolutely loving it.. Even nicer UI, smoother and faster performance..
Here is a very simple guide on the process in case anyone is interested.. ( i should mention here that although i m pretty good with Windows as an amateur, i have NO experience with Linux at all. I was using Windows 7 and i believe it should not be any different for Win XP or Win Vista. Also, i have never rooted any phone before)..
PS: please change all hxxp with http..
1. Root your phone using Unrevoked recovery installer: Follow the steps in this guide:
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7449486&postcount=1
U only have to go as far as it says "Congratulations, your phone is now rooted and has ClockworkMod recovery installed."..
Or u can use this guide here:
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788737
2. Then i made multiple backups of my phone using lookout, Astro, Gphone manager, Sprite backup and of course nandroid.. No u do not have to do all of these, probably nandroid is most important one but i just wanted to be ready as much as i could in case any thing didnt work too well!! I also copied the entire contents of my sd card to my pc..
I also noted down the names of all the apps that i was using on stock rom..
To make a nandroid backup, power off ur phone, press volume down button and keep holding it and press power on button. Use volume up/down key to go to "recovery" and use power button to select. Then go to nandroid and press power to select.. From there it is simple to make a backup..
3. Next step is to wipe data/factory reset: Again, power off ur phone, press volume down button and keep holding it and press power on button. Use volume up/down key to go to "recovery" and use power button to select. Now select "wipe data/factory reset" and confirm..
4. Download the ROM that u want to install, liberated froyo in my case, u can download it from this thread..
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819715
U can also use liberated Aria rom 2.1 (download from hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708434) or cyanogen rom (download from hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=737213])
5. Copy ur downloaded rom to ur sd card..
6. Again, power off ur phone, press volume down button and keep holding it and press power on button. Use volume up/down key to go to "recovery" and use power button to select. Select the zip file of the rom that u downloaded..
7. Sit back and relax till the phone is up n ready again.. Remember, first boot will take some time just like it did when u first started it after buying..
To Enable A2SD:
Backup your applications
Backup your sdcard
Partition your sdcard with ROM Manager with an ext partition option. (ROM manager is in Market)
This should start a special mode of clockwork recovery, which will partition the sdcard.
All credits to the work of original developers and writers. I only put it together in words..
Thank You!! Why this ROM?
First of all: Thank You for a very concise easy to understand guide!!! I am also a Linux and an Android rooting newbie, but quite good with Win7... So, my question is what made you choose the liberated instead of one of the others (including the new leaked "Gratia" ROM) i.e. which features, etc. made you choose this one??
I'm trying to decide which way to go with my Aria 2.1..... and the more I read and research, the more trouble I'm having making a choice!!
Thanks again for a concise, clear, and to the point guide - special thanks for all the work giving out the links to each step!!!
I only made it to the third paragraph before I stopped reading. I'd suggest using real words if you want to be taken seriously.

well i think Gratia is the same as froyo if i m not mistaken. Why i chose it? well as i mentioned in my post, i was sick of low disk space issue and i knew that 2.2 allows apps2sd. Also, it allows loading 3rd party apps (although this was not a big issue for me as i was using sideloading wonder machine with no problems).
I just like to try the latests version anyway..
You need to include a step that says "If upgrading to Cyanogen, Be sure to move all of your contacts data off of your SIM card and onto your phone, then sync them with Google BEFORE doing anything else!"
I lost ALL of my contacts because the current stable version and the new CM6-RC1 pre-release version do not read the SIM card, hence no contacts!

I know there are several ways to back up your apps, but what is the best way? (By best, I mean the easiest.) It's a pain to re-set up my phone after installing a new ROM.
I don't see how this is any more helpful than the threads already posted. If anything, this is the least comprehensive guide I've seen. Don't get me wrong, I do believe your intentions were good, but this may cause more confusion than help. Next time, at least post the one link that'll provide first-timers with immediate answers.

[Q] Dexter's XT720 Froyo not loading.

I have a Wind Mobile Motorola XT720 and I was following this tutorial to install Dexter's Froyo for XT720:
youtube . com / watch?v=KvU1CptOe14
I was at the 10:40 mark when it prompted to wipe all the data. I was not ready to do that yet, so I skipped that step and proceeded to Reboot the device. Now, when the phone turns on, it goes to the Dexter's XT720 Froyo loading screen and it says loading for 5 seconds and then the screen goes black for a few seconds and then the loading screen pops up again. It stays like that forever. I need a way to get out of this. I can access the Boot Loader menu but thats about it.

Hold the volume up while powering on, that should take you back to open recovery. From there you have to do a wipe data / factory reset.
I did that but it gives me a screen with a yellow Exclamation mark inside a white triangle with a picture of a phone in front
Edit: Well Open recovery popped up! Ill see if wiping the data fixes it.
EDIT 2: Thanks alot! worked like a charm!
hello, a few days ago I checked into this forum, just bought an XT720, and these days I've been reading about changing the ROM, and I need your help. I am a rookie with all this in adb and codes. Right now I have some doubts, I hope I can help and not cause inconvenience.
To change the ROM need my phone is in the following conditions
Factory Refurbished (yes or not)
Partitioned SD card (yes or not)
then do the following
1. root access
2. install OpenRecovery
3. Restart phone
4. Nandroid copy the folder to the root directory of the SD (which is the root directory?)
5. the SD mode is NOT part of Mass Storage space
6. OpenRecovery run
7. Installing a Recovery (how?)
8. Recovery Boot Press
9. Restore backup "stock22xxxx" (I guess it's a file that I have to download called Stock221v13-bugfix-1)
10. Clean factory reset
11. Restart
Doing all this, my phone already have 2.2.1 running Froyo
Another question I have is whether to funcioanr all applications, for example, gps, telephone, 3g, HDMI, cameras, sensor, etc.
my phone details are as follows:
Version S / W STR_U2_01.1E.0
Firmaware version of the 2.1-update 1
GAS_ASIA_USAS config firmware version and various numbers
Kernel version 2.6.29-omap1
be compatible with this ROM?
I have to make some modifications to ADB codes?
Thank you all and sorry for so many questions
Greetings from Guatemala
(Google Translate)
Someone can confirm me?
no need to partition the sd card
just watch the tutorial video
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943368
Factory Refurbished -Yes
Partitioned SD card - it's not necessary unless you want to use the apps2ext feature
then do the following
1. root access
2. install OpenRecovery
3. Restart phone
4. Nandroid copy the folder to the root directory of the SD (which is the root directory?) the top directory of the sdcard
5. the SD mode is NOT part of Mass Storage space
6. OpenRecovery run
7. Installing a Recovery (how?) Run the install option in the System Recovery app
8. Recovery Boot Press - Another option in the System Recovery app
9. Restore backup "stock22xxxx" (I guess it's a file that I have to download called Stock221v13-bugfix-1) - If in step 4 you if you copied the Nandroid folder to your sdcard this is the option you'll see in Nandroid >> Restore
10. Clean factory reset
11. Restart
Doing all this, my phone already have 2.2.1 running Froyo
Another question I have is whether to funcioanr all applications, for example, gps, telephone, 3g, HDMI, cameras, sensor, etc. - I believe the only two (minor) issues are that the gallery button (next to the shutter release) doesn't work & the volume buttons don't function in the FM Radio.
Thanks! will initiate the changes, I think the volume buttons on the radio does not matter, I've never used, the gallery button does not matter.
One more question, sorry for so much trouble, you can make a nandroid bacukp my original ROM 2.1 and if something fails or was not happy, I can return to the original eclair 2.1?

[Guide] *NOOB's* guide to flashing FROYO <> With the GB release

I am putting this up for new users of the Samsung Galaxy S 4g that are having issues with flashing, well, pretty much any rom right now.
1) The main issue right now is our recovery and rom manager not working together....NOT THE ROM's!
2) Here is a walk through for problem free flashing (I have officially flashed every rom posted here right now and have no issues whatsoever)
So here we go:
1) I'll start this assuming you have already rooted.
2) Download the update.zip and recovery from HERE
3) Place files on the root of your sdcard (not in any file) DO NOT UNZIP THE UPDATE.ZIP!!!
4) You must have a file system explorer with root permissions (IE...Root Explorer or equivalent)
5) Once in Root Explorer, your system MUST BE MOUNTED AS R/W, navigate to your sdcard, find the recovery file you downloaded and long press....select "copy"
6) Hit the back button until you return to the file marked "/" and make sure it is still mounted r/w, then navigate to system, then bin. Once you are in bin (this is important) hit "paste" on the bottom of your screen. It will ask if you want to overwrite the existing recovery. Select yes. DO NOT REPLACE IT, ONLY OVERWRITE IT!!!
7) Keep hitting the back button on your phone until you exit out of root explorer.
8) Power off your phone, then, after fully shut down, holding volume up AND down plus power (yes, hold all 3 of them) you will enter a blue stock recovery screen. Scroll down 1 option to "reinstall packages", press power........you should now be in the orange Clockwork Mod recovery.
9) Scroll down to "backup and restore" and hit power, then go to "Backup" and hit power. Let it do it's thing. This will create a backup on your sdcard in a file called "clockwork". Keep this so you can restore in case something goes wrong (or like me, like to change things up all the time).
10) Now, again, I will assume that you have the rom of your choice on the root of your sdcard. This is where things get screwy....so pay attention to the OP's instructions for mounts. Scroll to "mounts and storage" and hit power.
11) The first 4 things you will see are : /cache, /data, /sdcard, and /system. This is where you need to pay close attention to what you are doing.
A) For KD1 and Bionix Frost your mounts must appear like this:
/cache : unmount
/data : mount
/sdcard : mount
/system : unmount
B) For Trigger your mounts must appear like this:
/cache : unmount
/data : unmount
/sdcard : mount
/system : unmount
If they are not in this order, change them so they are, or it will flash but will not boot. YOU WILL BE IN A SOFT BRICK STATE THAT REQUIRES ODIN TO FIX!!!!
12) Install RomManager if you wish, but DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY FROM THE LIST, this will cause your phone to get stuck at wiping a file called /.android_ secure in recovery.....so once again, HELLO ODIN! Also DO NOT REBOOT RECOVERY from rom manager, this will also cause /.android_secure to not wipe.....so once again, HELLO ODIN!
Last but not least, follow instructions on the OP to the "T" and you will be fine, unless you enjoy odin that much.....personally, I hate it.
If anything here is wrong or not working for you, please let me know so I can fix/update this. Please double/triple check everything that you did and make sure it is correct before *****ing "It's still not working".......because it does work. I have flashed and flashed and flashed with only 1 soft brick, and that was my fault.....not these instructions fault.
To see if I can make this make a little more sense now, here we go: The reason for changing mounts is that, by default, /system is not mounted. To be able to flash and boot successfully, it has to be. When you are looking at them, it will say "mount", this means that it is NOT mounted. If it says "unmount", then it means it IS mounted, confused yet? Just remember it like this: It is the opposite of what it says...so make sure that system says "unmount", which actually means it's mounted. This step is absolutely CRUCIAL.

This should definitely make the sgs4g bible. Its a great tutorial on getting through the flashing issues people are having. Thank you this is ( . ) ( . )

Thanks brudda I wanted to hurry up and get ahold of you before you wasted all of your time and talent
@Mr. Clown , Any chance this could get a sticky in general until these issues disappear? I only ask so that the development threads can stop getting CLOGGED with "I can't get it to flash" and "I can't get it to boot" or "I still can't get into recovery" (making your life easier )
Great post!..quick question as for the rom..I heard that the mounts should look diffirent before and after flash..so after flash how should i order them?

Don't be concerned with how they look afterwards. I never have. Just make sure that when you flash they are set up properly
Thanks..one more question im currently running odex kd1 meaning original tmobile stock because i was actually waiting for roms...should I flash straight to bionix or trigger or go to kd1 first then flash those 2? because I"m concerned odex might mess it up

Shanks dude
Great job! I just came from the HD2 and was wondering if any of these roms helps the ****ty battery life?
They are all better than stock for sure. Also if you use the battery recalibration trick.....its much better.
sent from the pits of hell (from an sgs4g)
yes im a noob and yes i approve of these directions lol ya followed to the letter got clock work installed and bali installed ty
I got a question. I have this problem since I screwed up flashing the first Trigger, and then, with a brain fart, odining with the Vibrant .pit file. I got it fixed but now it will not let me change the /cache mount. I am running Trigger .4 with no problems but just curious why I can't change that mount. When I go into root explorer the only file in there is "lost&found"????
Let me do some research on that one, lol.

Nevermind, figured it out.

[HOWTO] install CM6 RC3 to XT720 from stock (newbie friendly)

Let's begin
1st download all the necessary files:
Motorola 5.4.0 Driver with MotoHelper http://www.motorola.com/consumers/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=bda09ec8009a0210VgnVCM1000008806b00aRCRD
stock UK XT720 sbf and RSD Lite 4.9 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953863
SuperOneClickv2.1.1 ftom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887416
OI File Manager or from Android Market
Open Recovery for XT720 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242259
CM6 RC3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197655
Then proceed to install the windows drivers for XT720,
once that is done flash your XT720 back to factory stock,
to go into ROM flashing mode Hold Power + Volume Down + Camera buttons all at once, be patient, it will take a while and a couple of reboot.
When the phone is finally done booting up, go into Settings > Applications, and check the boxes for USB debugging + Stay awake,
now you can run SuperOneClickv2.1.1 to root your XT720, for step by step rooting instructions follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887416
Next you will want to install a File Manager to your XT720, the stock XT720 doesn't include any file manager,
open a command line (in windows run CMD),
switch to the directory ..\SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse\ADB\
run the command line adb.exe install FileManager-1.1.6.apk
The next step is best done using a microSD card reader, then you can drag & drop all the files for your XT720 directly to the SD card from Windows Explorer
- OpenRecovery.apk,
- the unzipped files from OpenRecovery-XT720-01 folder,
- update-cm-6.3.0-RC3-MilestoneXT720-signed.zip,
- gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip
Using the OI File Manager install OpenRecovery.apk (it should be at the root of your SDcard),
run Open Recovery from XT720 stock launcher's app drawer,
select Install Recovery System (allow super user),
then follow the instructions to install OpenRecovery-XT720-01 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242259
Once you are done proceed to install update-cm-6.3.0-RC3-MilestoneXT720-signed.zip, and gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip using OpenRecovery-XT720 (for details follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197655),
select clear cache, dalvik, and factory reset
choose the reboot option from OpenRecovery-XT720 menu,
the first boot of CM6 will take a very long time,
when you see the launcher, let it finish loading, then reboot the phone again via power button > reboot,
after this last reboot, the phone is finally ready for normal usage.
Enjoy!
You can get the Dexter's OpenRecovery.apk here
you can use universal androot to root your phone alternatively. its super easy. just drag it onto your sd card (or download directly from your phone), install the apk, and click root. heres a link. http://www.4shared.com/file/HvHnis8C/Universal_Androot_v161.html
I actually did this to a friends xt720 yesterday and I needed to fix the APN settings, he wasn't getting data.
WARNING, about BusyBox newer than v1.17.1 and Link2SD
So i found out the hard way there's an odd bug with BusyBox 1.18.x or newer it conflicts with Link2SD, it wont mount and causes Link2SD to throw this message
Code:
Mount script error
Mount script cannot be created
mount: mounting /dev/block/vold/179:2 on /data/sdext2
failed: no such device
reverting BusyBox back to 1.17.1 fixed the problem
Help on Boot Loop
Followed all instructions here to update to the the cm 6.3.0 RC3. Everything appeared to go as stated, but after reboot i seem to be stuck in a vicious boot loop. I get the cyanogen mod droid logo but it seems to pop up every 10 seconds or so without the phone ever starting up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's cute as a paperweight, but not much good as a phone.
Disregard....after rebooting for nearly nine hours....the phone finally started up and appears to be working....Thanxxxx
I too now am unable to access data....i am not skilled enough to work with the APN settings. Could you please help me out on what i need to do to get my data working again...no internet access sux....

Awesome Instructions bud, much needed for the first timers. Just thought I would add that stock 2.1 always came with quickoffice for me and that's what I normally use at first to install Open Recovery but always end up needing a better File Manager anyway. So either way, I hate to be a stickler just might be one less step lol. Good job AllGamer dude!
Ps.. I should have just said good job dude your way is better lol.

Install APN manager from the market and find your carrier there.
You could always just input them manually, doesn't require any skill bud, you just have to google the correct APN configuration details.
nice App

this is an Excellent recommendation.
I didn't even know such APP existed
it's so easy to enter APN data... pick and choose, done!
Don't think you should be flashing ROMS if you're hesistant about manually entering an APN, my 2 cents lol.
I would still rather recommend singapore rom, with the tv out and everything. Don't know of any cons with this atm.
Hi,
i installed cm6 rc 3 as described above. And it runs very smooth and stable.
Although i have one big problem: If i insert my sd-card (3gb fat + 1 gb ext4, with app folder on ext partition) in my phone, app2sd works as it should and the phone boots as usual. But when the phone shuts off the display and goes into sleep mode, i am no more able to wake it up again. When I push the power button only the leds switch on. I have to pull the battery and restart the phone.
If sdcard is not inserted, everthing works great. with no problems since three days now.
But i would like to have my sdcard back...
Perhaps some can help me.

I'm not certain but I think this means that Android thinks your battery has more charge than the hardware does. I would first try to redo battery calibration (there are threads in the XT720 general section about how to do this) if you can convince yourself that your battery is actually full. It can be a little tricky.

if you are already on stock, then yes you can flash CM6
but make sure you are rooted first
and use the Open Recovery XT720 listed in the OP topic

Just installed! Working nice...
Camera and camcorder are working, it was a bug with stock Rom.
Is there a Overcloking kernel for XT720 CM6 rom?
Or is there a way to overclock it with the current one?
Regards et thanks for your help!
