Let's begin
1st download all the necessary files:
Motorola 5.4.0 Driver with MotoHelper http://www.motorola.com/consumers/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=bda09ec8009a0210VgnVCM1000008806b00aRCRD
stock UK XT720 sbf and RSD Lite 4.9 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953863
SuperOneClickv2.1.1 ftom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887416
OI File Manager or from Android Market
Open Recovery for XT720 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242259
CM6 RC3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197655
Then proceed to install the windows drivers for XT720,
once that is done flash your XT720 back to factory stock,
to go into ROM flashing mode Hold Power + Volume Down + Camera buttons all at once, be patient, it will take a while and a couple of reboot.
When the phone is finally done booting up, go into Settings > Applications, and check the boxes for USB debugging + Stay awake,
now you can run SuperOneClickv2.1.1 to root your XT720, for step by step rooting instructions follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887416
Next you will want to install a File Manager to your XT720, the stock XT720 doesn't include any file manager,
open a command line (in windows run CMD),
switch to the directory ..\SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse\ADB\
run the command line adb.exe install FileManager-1.1.6.apk
The next step is best done using a microSD card reader, then you can drag & drop all the files for your XT720 directly to the SD card from Windows Explorer
- OpenRecovery.apk,
- the unzipped files from OpenRecovery-XT720-01 folder,
- update-cm-6.3.0-RC3-MilestoneXT720-signed.zip,
- gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip
Using the OI File Manager install OpenRecovery.apk (it should be at the root of your SDcard),
run Open Recovery from XT720 stock launcher's app drawer,
select Install Recovery System (allow super user),
then follow the instructions to install OpenRecovery-XT720-01 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242259
Once you are done proceed to install update-cm-6.3.0-RC3-MilestoneXT720-signed.zip, and gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip using OpenRecovery-XT720 (for details follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197655),
select clear cache, dalvik, and factory reset
choose the reboot option from OpenRecovery-XT720 menu,
the first boot of CM6 will take a very long time,
when you see the launcher, let it finish loading, then reboot the phone again via power button > reboot,
after this last reboot, the phone is finally ready for normal usage.
Enjoy!
You can get the Dexter's OpenRecovery.apk here
you can use universal androot to root your phone alternatively. its super easy. just drag it onto your sd card (or download directly from your phone), install the apk, and click root. heres a link. http://www.4shared.com/file/HvHnis8C/Universal_Androot_v161.html
I actually did this to a friends xt720 yesterday and I needed to fix the APN settings, he wasn't getting data.
WARNING, about BusyBox newer than v1.17.1 and Link2SD
So i found out the hard way there's an odd bug with BusyBox 1.18.x or newer it conflicts with Link2SD, it wont mount and causes Link2SD to throw this message
Code:
Mount script error
Mount script cannot be created
mount: mounting /dev/block/vold/179:2 on /data/sdext2
failed: no such device
reverting BusyBox back to 1.17.1 fixed the problem
Help on Boot Loop
Followed all instructions here to update to the the cm 6.3.0 RC3. Everything appeared to go as stated, but after reboot i seem to be stuck in a vicious boot loop. I get the cyanogen mod droid logo but it seems to pop up every 10 seconds or so without the phone ever starting up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's cute as a paperweight, but not much good as a phone.
Disregard....after rebooting for nearly nine hours....the phone finally started up and appears to be working....Thanxxxx
I too now am unable to access data....i am not skilled enough to work with the APN settings. Could you please help me out on what i need to do to get my data working again...no internet access sux....

Awesome Instructions bud, much needed for the first timers. Just thought I would add that stock 2.1 always came with quickoffice for me and that's what I normally use at first to install Open Recovery but always end up needing a better File Manager anyway. So either way, I hate to be a stickler just might be one less step lol. Good job AllGamer dude!
Ps.. I should have just said good job dude your way is better lol.

Install APN manager from the market and find your carrier there.
You could always just input them manually, doesn't require any skill bud, you just have to google the correct APN configuration details.
nice App

this is an Excellent recommendation.
I didn't even know such APP existed
it's so easy to enter APN data... pick and choose, done!
Don't think you should be flashing ROMS if you're hesistant about manually entering an APN, my 2 cents lol.
I would still rather recommend singapore rom, with the tv out and everything. Don't know of any cons with this atm.
Hi,
i installed cm6 rc 3 as described above. And it runs very smooth and stable.
Although i have one big problem: If i insert my sd-card (3gb fat + 1 gb ext4, with app folder on ext partition) in my phone, app2sd works as it should and the phone boots as usual. But when the phone shuts off the display and goes into sleep mode, i am no more able to wake it up again. When I push the power button only the leds switch on. I have to pull the battery and restart the phone.
If sdcard is not inserted, everthing works great. with no problems since three days now.
But i would like to have my sdcard back...
Perhaps some can help me.

I'm not certain but I think this means that Android thinks your battery has more charge than the hardware does. I would first try to redo battery calibration (there are threads in the XT720 general section about how to do this) if you can convince yourself that your battery is actually full. It can be a little tricky.

Camera and camcorder are working, it was a bug with stock Rom.
Is there a Overcloking kernel for XT720 CM6 rom?
Or is there a way to overclock it with the current one?

BACK UP YOUR FILES
Before doing ANY mods you should ALWAYS backup your important files.
Connect phone to pc via USB
On the phone: pull down the notification bar & press ->USB Connected->Mount
On the pc: copy any & all files/folders you want to keep.
On the pc: Close the SD card folder on your pc.
On the phone: pull down the notification bar & press ->USB Connected->Un-mount/Turn off USB storage. Once this is done remove USB cable.
(NOTE: By the end of this guide EVERYTHING on your card will be GONE so don't skip this step!)
FORMAT SD CARD
From the home screen press Menu->Settings->SD card & phone storage->Un-mount SD card.
Once it is un-mounted press ->Format SD card.
Once it is formatted & has re-mounted go back to the home screen and press Menu->Settings->Applications->make sure 'Unknown sources' is checked.
(NOTE: if your phone is already ROOTED & running a Custom/Cooked ROM you can likely skip the SETUP section just check Amon_RA's thread for alternate install options)
SETUP
Find out what version of Android your phone has installed. From the home screen Press Menu->Settings->About phone-> scroll to Firmware Version.
(this is your Android Version)
If you're on Android 1.5 proceed to INSTALL section.
If you're on Android 1.6 re-connect phone to pc.
Copy the sappimg.nbh & place it on your SD card, then close everything & disconnect USB. (I am told this MUST be the only file on your SDcard or the validation will fail)
Turn off phone.
Boot into 'Fast Boot' like this: Press-&-Hold END/Power AND Pres-&-Hold Volume Down until the Fast Boot screen appears.
Press the trackball (action button) and wait for it to flash the sappimg.nbh
Once fully complete reboot phone & proceed to INSTALL section.
INSTALL
Connect phone to pc via USB
On the phone: pull down the notification bar & press ->USB Connected->Mount
On the pc: copy the FlashRec.apk & the Amon RA recovery.img onto your SD card.
If you don’t have a ‘file manager’ or ‘app manager’ go to the market & download one such as: ASTRO, LINDA, AppManager or the like. Then browse to your SD card & open/run the flashrec.apk to install it. (if asked what to open with choose Package Installer)
Open RecoveryFlash (flashrec) & make a backup of your current recovery.img. Flashrec just made "recovery-backup.img" on the root of your SDcard, so now rename Amon Ra's recovery to "recovery-backup.img" (choose replace when the dulpicate file name message appears) then open flashrec again & choose restore recovery. (Credit for this step goes to deb82swearingen Much easier then the orig method I was shone for using flashrec)
Once the flash is complete turn the phone off.
Boot into 'Recovery' like this: Press-&-Hold END/Power AND Pres-&-Hold Home. (this will be a black background with green text options)
Scroll down to ‘partition’ (press trackball to select)->partition SD->follow onscreen steps (HOME=confirm, VOL +/- changes partition size, any other key=cancel).
Once partitioning is complete press BACK to get to partition menu & scroll down to 'SD:ext2 to ext3’ press trackball to select (if you have a class 4 or 6 SD card you can then go for 'SD:ext3 to ext4' but don't try it on class2 cards it will cause system instability & likely FRY your SD card... if you don't know your class stop @ ext3).
go BACK until top says "Android system recovery" ->Connect phone to pc & scroll to 'USB-MS toggle'->HOME to confirm.
Copy the HTC 1.6 BASE & CyanogenMod ROM & Contacts.apk files onto your SD card then close the SD card folder on your PC & toggle USB-MS again, then disconnect from the pc.
Scroll to & select ‘wipe'->wipe data partition->CONFIRM
Scroll to & select ‘Flash update image->Apply sdcard:choose zip & select the HTC BASE file & let it complete (this will take a few min be patient). DO NOT REBOOT!
Scroll to & select ‘Flash update image->Apply sdcard:choose zip & select the CyanogenMod file & let it complete (this will take a few min be patient).
Once the flash is complete reboot phone (this will take up words of 5-10min+ be patient).
Once up & running on latest CyanogenMod connect to pc again & unzip the audio-resources.zip directly onto your SD card.

Fixed Contacts.apk
Now that you have 4.2.13 installed it's time to fix the bug listed in Cyan's change-log. We will do this by replacing the broken Contacts app with the fixed Contacts.apk that you downloaded. If you get a pop-up asking about giving super user rights just hit the check mark to remember this answer & press 'yes'. This is UNIX & UNIX is unforgiving so pay attention to all punctuation, symbols, UPPER CASE & lower case. They are different & if you don't do it exactly it won't work. (UNIX assumes that you know what you want it to do so it will do whatever you tell it to, even if what you tell it to do breaks it.) So long as you are able to type what you see this is easy
Open Terminal Emulator & type these lines (hitting enter at the [E])
su [E]
mount -o rw,remount /system [E]
cp /sdcard/Contacts.apk /system/app/Contacts.apk [E]
mount -o ro,remount /system [E]
reboot [E]
(The reboot is precautionary but generally a good idea anytime you replace /system files.)

P.S. THANKS fhaines !!!!
fhaines spent days sifting through the forums to pick all these tidbits out of the masses of G1 ROM flashing posts & forwarded it to me so I could flash my MT3G, I want to say thank you to fhaines for his hard work. I just worked out the formatting & simplified the verbiage to as plain English as I could. Hope this helps those who are a bit timid to test the CM Rom waters (as I was).
Is it required to partition the sdcard, or is that just for Apps2SD & swap?

Cyanogenmods newest roms run fastest with a swap and ext3 partition on the sd card. If you run it with just a fat32 and or ext2 you will most likely be running the rom a lot slower than was designed.

If I am not wrong the has to be rooted to apply cm? In which step of this tutorial does the phone gets root?
Nicely done!
A few days too late for me, unfortunately, but it's nice to know that I ended up with essentially the same procedure. My notes are quite a bit more disjointed than your instructions, however.
It'll be a good refresher once it's time to root my wife's phone, however.
Great Resource for noobs and advanced alike
I believe this should be stickied.
Damn you beat me to it. I have been looking for WEEKS on a sure fire way to root my MyTouch 3G. I tried the Relentless Rooter, the Gold Card method and everything else I could find to throw at this thing.
The steps outlined here are slightly different from what I did, but all in all, this is what worked for me, was nice, easy and worked great. The first time you Root a phone it takes a bit to get the process down, but it's not as hard as you think.
If this hasn't been stickied, it needs to be!
Looks good but I have a few questions.
I am currently running on CM 4.1.999 (1.6) and my phone is running very smoothly. I tried 4.1.9999 but it started to bog down and seriously slowed down. I've got quite a few apps and I've got the phone set up as I like it (including changing some of the icons with bettercut and that kind of stuff) I'm getting to the point where I'm a bit loathe to go through all that again, so my question is; what are the real world advantages I might enjoy if I "upgraded" to 4.2?

OK, thanks, I thought it had been switched off so to speak after the Google episode.
My main question remains though, are there any benefits? I know, I know, go and look at the thread in the Dream section but still, CM4.1.999 really does work very well on my Magic and I think it deserves representation here.
Allied to a good theme it is by far and away the best ROM for the Magic IMHO.
Im running it now and have no issues. It is very fast and reliable. I think its worth the upgrade.

You do need to be rooted to apply a CM ROM (or any other 'cooked ROM' I think), HERE is where you are officially Rooted as I understand the process.

Hey,
Couple of things to check and make sure of. You have to be on factory 1.5 before doing the upgrade to the Rooted HTC rom and Cyanogens rom, cannot do this from 1.6. Also, there is a wipe involved in the process, and if its skipped it may account for the FC's. Also there is a fix permission file you can run after installation and initial boot that may help with the FC's, its located in CM's thread in the Dream section where the rom is.

Yes, it is on the factory cupcake build when i start to try and install CM. The weird thing is i have had Cyanogenmod for a long time and have been doing upgrades and everything worked untill now. I upgraded to CM 4.2.1 and after that CM stopped working on my phone. I can confirm that 'other' rooted roms do work..so it seems like its just CM. Thanks

Quick update for anyone with any ideas. I finally got it to boot up and it runs great except for two things I've notices so far. When i try to add widgets nothing pops up and when i go to settings the window comes up for half a second then goes away and back to home screen. Now what I did to fix it was partition the sd card which i was told is NOT necessary. Then after i got it to work i tried again with a sdcard that was NOT partitioned and it did the same thing again, black screen no-go. So it seems like if you don't partition the sdcard on some phones the phone freezes at a black screen. Keywords being "some phones". So for anybody who knows how to fix the widget and settings problems not opening, please help me....Thanks

How to install:Important!
You will need to download Koush's bootstrap application and bootstrap your recovery. Then you can boot into recovery via the same app or you can install via ROM Manager(by rebooting into recovery, not via install rom from sdcard). Once you boot into recovery do a FULL nandroid backup and then you go to mounts and storage and mount /system manually to avoid more issues. Install zip from sdcard and toggle signature verification to disable. Now you can install the zip from the sdcard. Once this is done, reboot.
Now after reading all that here is your download!

Thanks for using Epic the first DROID 2 rom! Say thanks if you like it
I am trying to buy a domain name to host my files. All I need is $15 dollars. You do not have to do this if you do not want to. It is just to help me out a little bit Please donate as little as $1 to my PayPal [email protected]. Thanks if you do!
NOTE: Updated September 7th, 2010. Added additional steps to the process. Reread to reapply the Epic Unleashed 1.1!
Please READ each direction CAREFULLY and BEFORE executing each step. I can not stress how many mistakes are made because someone did not READ the directions carefully. So... yeah, once again, READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!
How to Apply EpicUnleashed 1.1
Credits: The ROM was created by Matt4542. Tutorial was written by me with some simple directions from Matt. You'll need to be rooted in order to run the Droid 2 Bootstrapper.
The fine print: Matt4542 and/or I (DarkOnion) can not be held responsible if you mess up. If you mess up, you mess up. That's why I wrote the .sbf recovery tutorial. Matt has also written one. More simple, but requires Linux.
Here we go.
1. Download Koush Bootstrap here.
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//motorola/droid2/Droid2Bootstrap.apk
2. Download Epic Unleashed 1.1!
http://www.epic.grrmode.com/Epic-Unleashed11Deodexed.zip
3. Move both files to the base of the SD Card. Best way to do this is to plug your phone into your computer and move it like that. Make sure you phone is in USB mass storage mode. To change it, pull down the notification blind, choose USB connection, and choose USB Mass storage. Now copy and paste the two files to the new removable drive that showed up in your My Computer. The Epic-Unleashed11Deodexed.zip needs to be at the base of the SD card, and not in any folders. After moving all the files over to the phone, change the connection type back to Charge Only. Notfication blind -> USB Connection -> Charge only.
4. Install Koush Droid 2 Bootstrapper. Using an app installer, Astro File Manager, or equivalent, navigate to your SD card. The folder in Astro File Manager will be called sdcard. Choose Droid2Bootstrap.apk and install it. Follow the directions.
5. Now that it is installed, open Droid 2 Bootstrapper located in your applications section menu. It'll probably ask you for Super User access, say yes.
6. Press Bootstrap Recovery. It'll probably ask you for Super User access, say yes.
7. Next, we want to back your system file up by making a system image. In the Droid2 Bootstrapper, which you are already in, choose Reboot Recovery. Your phone should restart and load up into the bootloader. You should see some green text with various options, and a little lower than the middle of the screen, it says ClockworkMod Recovery.
Notes for navigating through the system. You need to use the keyboard to navigate. "Enter" will select. "Del" will cancel/go back. and the arrows are movement.
8. Using your slide out keyboard, scroll down to backup and restore and press the enter key. It should take you to another window. Choose Backup. Let it runs it's course. After it is all said and done. Reboot your phone by choosing reboot system now. (I don't think the rebooting is necessary, but I am just going to do it be safe.)
9. After you are done rebooting, if you did this, go back to the Droid 2 Bootstrapper, and choose Reboot Recovery. It'll reboot, and you'll eventually be back at the screen with the green text.
10. Using your keyboard buttons, choose mount and storage. And then choose mount /system. After that, press del to go back to the main menu.
11. Using your keyboard buttons, choose install zip from sdcard.
12. You need to make sure signature verification is off. Choose toggle signature verification and make sure it is off. At the bottom, under ClockworkMod Recovery, it'll say whether or not signature verification is enabled or disabled. You want it to say that it is disabled.
13. Then choose install zip from sdcard. Choose Epic-Unleashed11Deodexed.zip. It'll ask to confirm. Scroll down to Yes, and press enter. You'll see some commands going and eventually say it is complete.
14. Now navigate back to the main menu by pressing "Del" on the keyboard. And restart your phone by choosing reboot system now. It'll reboot and that's it! You've added EpicUnleashed 1.1.
Note: Your first boot will take a little while, up to 10 minutes. PLEASE BE PATIENT. You know that you corrected updated if your start-up animation is different.
If you need to undo this thing, boot back up into bootloader using Droid 2 Bootstrapper -> Reboot Recovery -> Back Up and Restore (after the reboot) -> Restore.

I have v1.0 installed now. When I go into bootstrap and try to install 1.1 my phone still reads rom v1.0...?
Sent from my DROID2 using Tapatalk
Same for me, I came from stock and it appears I am still stock (no weather widget, etc). I notice I did not move the .zip from my /downloads/ to the base sd card, I will try that when I have some time.

Maybe you can put the launcher2.apk for 2.2 as the main homescreen. I downloaded it from the droid incredible forum on my phone and everything is working alot snappier on my end. Still using stock just looking and waiting until everything is figured on this rom.

As a test for now just try to install your recovery from ROM Manager and boot into recovery that way. It is untested but it is worth a shot.

Actually all of the bugs have been ironed out. It is a problem with the recovery. It may affect you, may not. I would put the stock Froyo launcher but I am not going to risk screwing with blur and causing more problems now. I will do it in a later release.
ya i installed it, but i did it from my downloads folder, it took like 3 seconds and nothing is new lol, i will have to try from the root i guess.

Yes and no. It'll is suppose to help clean up some of the junk that is on the phone. Have you rooted yet, because if you haven't... you need to do that before you flash a fixed version.
Yep I have already rooted it but I am in the stage where it says to make sure that my signature check is disable mine is enable how do I get it disabled sorry for being such a noob lol i got 5th in the state of Minnesota for computer repair but I I haven't done this kinda of stuff before

Hello My Friends I've Heard You Are Having Troubler Installing The New Upgrade Or Understanding What Is Needed To Be Done.
Note: THIS IS A WINDOWS BASED HOW TO AND WILL WORK ON WINDOWS ONLY

Well Here Is the quick Easy Guide In How To Do This
-Fist we Need To Get The Tools To Perform This Operation
pulled From This Tread we need
1. Motorola Drivers For Either 32 or 64 Bits
2. RSD Lite, witch is a tool for flashing your phone.
3. The GOT Open Recovery ToolUpdate: Added Latest version from G.O.T.'S Blog
4.The Firmware Files From Got

EDIT: G.O.T. Has Added the burnerable open recovery to these sfb files so no need to flash it latter
-Now That We Have The Stuff We Need We are going to do it, fist i must say that unlike other roms that are applied by a backup restore (corect me if im whrong) this is a full flash and its going to reset everything so no apps will remain no setting will remain and is highly recommended that you uninstall every app you have, don't back them up(except for apps some apps that have a create backup file, those seem to work) just uninstall them, and when we are done have them installed again, Here Is A Tool That Will Help You Get There Faster
1.ok you have everything uninstalled right? now time for some action
2.install the proper divers (32 or 64)
3.install the RSD Lite tool
4.unzip the 2.2.1 FIRMWARE FILES you downloaded and you will find a ".sbf" file
5.now connect your phone to USB cable and turn it off
6.boot it in boot-loader mode (press the D-PAD UP key while pressing the power button), some night need you to release the button after a minute, a black screen will be shown on your phone and you will see the divers being installed on your computer.
7.when drivers are done open the RSD Lite tool and your device should appear you can click on it to see details.
8.now click on the "..." buttons that are close to the start button and look for the ".sbf" file, after a couple of seconds it should be ready to start
9.press the start button and do not unplug the cable or let your computer show the screen saver or go to sleep, the posses must not be stopped while it has started .
10.when the posses is done the devise will restart and voala, you have 2.2
-As GOT stands there are some bugs on the firmware and they have developed a fix to them and get root and overclock, here is what you have to do.
1. unzip the got open recovery tool into the root of your SD card
2.check this quote
NOTE: On some devices, we have encountered that rooting directly after flashing without rebooting after the initial flash can bring some issues with RootExplorer not asking for root permissions. To be safe, reboot after flash so that the “welcome to milestone” menu comes up, set up the device in general, then reboot to recovery and root the device as well as apply our 2.2.1 tweaks with Launcher, Services.jar fix and Wireless Tethering app.
Click to collapse
this means if the fist time your milestone got restarted and you saw "Welcome to Milestone" Message You are good an you can root.
but if you didn't then restart you phone and see if the message comes out, if not , a factory reset should have that scree message shown.
3. open the open recovery by pressing camera and power button at the same time while the device id off. you should see a scree with a "!" symbol on it then press fist volume rocker up button a leave it pressed then press camera button, some letter will pop out.
4. using the pad scroll down to "apply update.zip", after a couple of seconds the GOT menu should pop out (everything from now on uses the pad)
5.root your phone (why not)
6.go down to "Launch 2.2.1 Menu" Option.
7.Here you will see the "Fix Bugs They Are Talking About
One of the first things you should do is use the “Fix 2.2.1 bugs” selection in the new OR 2.2.1 menu after you flash the sbf file.
This tweak will fix some of the issues with the generic sbf build such as dual USB notifications, replacing some stock Motorola applications such as the old launcher/mediagallery and adding the Wireless Tethering application.
Click to collapse
8. there is the overclock too.
Now your device should have all the things you need to start playing with it,I encourage you to check on some tweaks the GOT team might have, and you might want.
I Hope This Was Helpful enjoy ^_^

something i don't get
I updated the firmware with RSD Lite, and used the one click tool, because:
whenever i try to hit update.zip i will get an errormessage, stating that these blocks couldn't be found -> ergo, the card not be mounted.
The HTC stuff i always managed, but this one is a mistery to me. Also, i did format fat32, pushed the stuff and then straight on bootup trying to hit the update.zip, without success.
I've read about how other people solved that problem, none of those approaches helped me.
Any hint is more than welcome.
2 bugs i've discovered so far: Battery drain like almost to be declared useless, some market apps "vanish" after installing them. I suppose those fixes would have done the job. I might attempt to use root explorer and execute the scripts like that, still I'd like to know why I'm unable to get the update.zip, resp. the G.O.T or any other "intelligent" boot menu installed.
Edit2: Even when installing the vulnerable sbf, i still get the error: E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 ....

I'd like to add something for Linux users:
Using a virtual machine (virtualizing WinXP) that has USB support (eg Oracle VM VirtuaBox, since VirtualBox OSE does not support USB forwarding) can do this pretty easy. So no worries when trying this via a VM.

I have a Wind Mobile Motorola XT720 and I was following this tutorial to install Dexter's Froyo for XT720:
youtube . com / watch?v=KvU1CptOe14
I was at the 10:40 mark when it prompted to wipe all the data. I was not ready to do that yet, so I skipped that step and proceeded to Reboot the device. Now, when the phone turns on, it goes to the Dexter's XT720 Froyo loading screen and it says loading for 5 seconds and then the screen goes black for a few seconds and then the loading screen pops up again. It stays like that forever. I need a way to get out of this. I can access the Boot Loader menu but thats about it.

Hold the volume up while powering on, that should take you back to open recovery. From there you have to do a wipe data / factory reset.
I did that but it gives me a screen with a yellow Exclamation mark inside a white triangle with a picture of a phone in front
Edit: Well Open recovery popped up! Ill see if wiping the data fixes it.
EDIT 2: Thanks alot! worked like a charm!
hello, a few days ago I checked into this forum, just bought an XT720, and these days I've been reading about changing the ROM, and I need your help. I am a rookie with all this in adb and codes. Right now I have some doubts, I hope I can help and not cause inconvenience.
To change the ROM need my phone is in the following conditions
Factory Refurbished (yes or not)
Partitioned SD card (yes or not)
then do the following
1. root access
2. install OpenRecovery
3. Restart phone
4. Nandroid copy the folder to the root directory of the SD (which is the root directory?)
5. the SD mode is NOT part of Mass Storage space
6. OpenRecovery run
7. Installing a Recovery (how?)
8. Recovery Boot Press
9. Restore backup "stock22xxxx" (I guess it's a file that I have to download called Stock221v13-bugfix-1)
10. Clean factory reset
11. Restart
Doing all this, my phone already have 2.2.1 running Froyo
Another question I have is whether to funcioanr all applications, for example, gps, telephone, 3g, HDMI, cameras, sensor, etc.
my phone details are as follows:
Version S / W STR_U2_01.1E.0
Firmaware version of the 2.1-update 1
GAS_ASIA_USAS config firmware version and various numbers
Kernel version 2.6.29-omap1
be compatible with this ROM?
I have to make some modifications to ADB codes?
Thank you all and sorry for so many questions
Greetings from Guatemala
(Google Translate)
Someone can confirm me?
no need to partition the sd card
just watch the tutorial video
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943368
Factory Refurbished -Yes
Partitioned SD card - it's not necessary unless you want to use the apps2ext feature
then do the following
1. root access
2. install OpenRecovery
3. Restart phone
4. Nandroid copy the folder to the root directory of the SD (which is the root directory?) the top directory of the sdcard
5. the SD mode is NOT part of Mass Storage space
6. OpenRecovery run
7. Installing a Recovery (how?) Run the install option in the System Recovery app
8. Recovery Boot Press - Another option in the System Recovery app
9. Restore backup "stock22xxxx" (I guess it's a file that I have to download called Stock221v13-bugfix-1) - If in step 4 you if you copied the Nandroid folder to your sdcard this is the option you'll see in Nandroid >> Restore
10. Clean factory reset
11. Restart
Doing all this, my phone already have 2.2.1 running Froyo
Another question I have is whether to funcioanr all applications, for example, gps, telephone, 3g, HDMI, cameras, sensor, etc. - I believe the only two (minor) issues are that the gallery button (next to the shutter release) doesn't work & the volume buttons don't function in the FM Radio.
Thanks! will initiate the changes, I think the volume buttons on the radio does not matter, I've never used, the gallery button does not matter.
One more question, sorry for so much trouble, you can make a nandroid bacukp my original ROM 2.1 and if something fails or was not happy, I can return to the original eclair 2.1?

One more question, sorry for so much trouble, you can make a nandroid bacukp my original ROM 2.1 and if something fails or was not happy, I can return to the original eclair 2.1?

Yes. When you go into Nandroid >> Backup you'll want to select all the partitions except Baseband, Bootloader, Logo & Device Tree & then backup selective.

ok, Thanks for the help, already done. In theory it means that I have saved my Eclair 2.1 ROM if I wanted to return to it?
After backing up nandroid gave me the following message:
cdrom: Generating MD5 ... done
ext2: skiping
Now I have a question, do I have to uncheck Baseband, Bootloader, Logo & Device Tree.
Greetings!
Friends Thanks for your help! Already installed Dexter's ROM V 1.3, I will start with its use and I will be discussing. It really is not difficult, it is the first time I do something similar, but with the help of you and what I've read in the forum and the tutorials I was not complicated.
Greetings!

Thanks! I encourage her to do this backup, update with the second patch, and hopefully not have problems.
Hi guys, this is the first post i upload and want to take the occasion to greet you all.
In these days i bought a Samsung Infuse 4G...i really like this phone but want to be able to use it with some special features such as connecting various USB devices to the phone and other juicy stuff.
I read that the builtin ROM is not capable of such this thing, and Ice Cream Sandwitch, witch should allow to do that, is not available for this smartphone model. At least not officially.
My choice fell upon CM7 LinuxBozo ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311960 ).
I rooted my device. I'm sure of that because i am able to use the root explorer with root privileges and the root menu shows up among my applications.
I then followed the instructions here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107881 ) in order to install the ClockWorkMod Flashing Menu but I am not sure whether anything went allright or not as, after trying both the methods shown on the guide, nothing happened (in the first case, the automatic install through ROM Manager seems to work, a message appears on the screen confirming anything went smooth but when i reboot i see the normal reboot menu, no advanced menu nor CWM menu; in the second case i tried to manually load the CWM menu by placing the update file in the SD and renaming it to update.zip, the update gets stuck somewhere saying something about a bad or wrong signature, tried it a few times and with different CWM update versions but nothing to do).
I then stumbled into a workaround to fix that issue by an even more manual procedure ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkMo8rBehHg&feature=related ) basically consisting in copying the "recovery" executable from the CWM update archive to the directory /system/bin and of course chmodding it to rwxr-xr-x and chowning it to the root.
Now the CWM screen appears but, as i attempt to flash the CM7 ROM, the flashing gets stuck at "Finding update package". I read here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821499 ) that it could happen sometimes and it's just a matter of trying and trying again... I tried at least ten times up to now but it keeps getting stuck...maybe it's not my case.
Hope someone will help me out...i really need that USB reading feature. Thank you.

what color is your cwm screen?
this may be a simpler way of gettin cwm:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220090
specifically, the CWM instructions set.
I see that the instructions you suggested me would mean to start the process almost from scratch. I will do that as soon as i finish studying the nazis for my school report .
And maybe after getting the next answer from you
The boot screen is green text on black backgroud.
Holding audio and power buttons for 10 seconds doesn't prompt me to the red boot screen if it was what you meant and if I read the instructions provided well (witch i didn't as i have no time now)... don't get me wrong. Just trying to provide you as more information as possible.

if you still have root, download from market
sgs kernel flasher and the flash the gingerbread kernel to give you RED recovery and flash the rom of your choice after a factory reset and usual wipes
Cool... i'm now running CM7 !
Here is what i missed for anyone who would have the same problem in the future (you can find the download links here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220090 ):
CWM Installation Instructions:
1) You must be rooted.
2) If you have a /Voodoo folder on your internal SD card, delete it and reboot.
3) If you're already running a custom ROM with Voodoo lagfix FULLY enabled, you can skip to step 7.
4) Download CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip if you're on Froyo or CWM-infused-v2.0.1-kernel.zip if you're on Gingerbread and place it on your internal SD card.
5) Install SGS Kernel Flasher from the Market.
6) Open SGS Kernel Flasher, select choose kernel, select the file you downloaded, and select flash kernel. Your phone will reboot and begin to enable Voodoo lagfix. Let it do that and boot all the way up. It will take a while (5-10 minutes) because it's converting all partitions to ext4.
7) Download update-infused-v2.X.X-full.zip and place it on your internal SD card.
8) Power off your phone.
9) With the phone powered off, hold both volume keys and the power button for about 10 seconds and then release. This should boot you into RED CWM.
10) Select "install zip from sdcard" and select update-infused-v2.X.X-full.zip.
11) Once that finishes, select "wipe data/factory reset".
12) Select "reboot system now".
13) Do NOT restore system data with Titanium Backup. Do NOT restore ALL apps with data. If you absolutely must restore something with Titanium Backup, only restore MISSING apps with data.

Now just another question: i noticed different errors when running the market and other old built-in apps... I just need to reinstall gapps right?
yeah, that is why it's stickeyed.
you just had to read/search them.
market wise, there's a market fix
or you can also factory reset and wipe cache and dalvik in cwm
Thanks. You helped me solving this and now anything works fine. Have a good day.
Thread (NOT) SOLVED.
--------
(Edited after realizing gapps still don't show up as installation didn't really worked)

(bad)
Installation aborted.

I tried different versions of gapps including the one suggested in the CM wiki but with no luck. I guess the problem is somewhere else.
PS: now i see the blue on black bootscreen as in order to install gapps with rom manager i was asked to reinstall CWM trough it...
