Hi all...
So I have a 3 part question -
a) Will any MHL adapter work with the HTC One S or do I have to wait for them to release one specific to this device?
b) Does the phone need to be rooter for the device to throw image onto a TV screen?
c) Assuming any MHL will work, does anybody have any recommendations on which are the good ones? Is it like HDMI cables where the build and quality of product matters and potentially could be a bottleneck or they're all the same? Links are welcome.
Thank you!
MHL does not work on our devices.unfortunately. HTC is releasing a wireless solution soon but from what I've seen its a ridiculous battery hog and its going to.be around
Edit - Sorry for the false information! The HTC representative had told me that there was no MHL capabilities of this device. I assumed he was knowlefavle and didn't think to try it out myself. Seems to definitely work, I have the same MHL adapter someone pictured from expansys later in this thread.

Thanks for letting me know... Saved me $15 coz I was almost sure MHL would work give it's still microUSB port and was gonna buy on Amazon.
That's a shame.. Hope they come up with a solution soon... I'd love to be able to play temple run on my flat screen
This supposedly works with the one S..............

I have an MHL adapter so I can answer your question.
a) Yes any MHL adapter will work on our phone. It's a spec like usb and they are pretty much interchanable.
b) No the phone doesn't need to be rooted. HDMI/mhl mirroring is a feature included by HTC with the stock rom. The phone auto detects when an MHL devices is connected and begins to mirror the phone.
c) Here is the one I bought. http://www.amazon.com/Menotek-Adapter-IMPROVED-Protocol-Sensation/dp/B005F9W6DU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1336154297&sr=8-1
Also, while it's pretty cool to do the phone to TV thing. It drains the battery super quickly. It's something like 1% of power every 2 minutes maybe faster.

That's why I was shocked, it did have the power plugged in. It actually doesn't even work if the power isn't plugged it
Mine arrived today, have only given it a quick try and so far it seems good! Does what you expect of it.
My S charges once the mains powers is connected and works perfectly fine when connected to the TV.
Will post a video, pic etc. later on tonight or sometime tomorrow

MHL adapter arrived yesterday, £7.28 including delivery (£4.58 just for the adapter), which isn't badly priced
Has gone up a tiny bit since I purchased it though:
http://www.expansys.com/expansys-mhl-microusb-to-hdmi-adapter-black-221378/
Couple of photos below, as you can see, we have a HDMI port (I just used my Xbox 360 HDMI cable and it worked fine) and the micro USB port (just use the USB cable that comes with the S) for charging the device at the same time as when you're streaming to the TV at 1080P it can drain the battery pretty quickly especially when watching a 1080P HD film or playing a few games. You can either plug the USB into a socket near by or into one of the TV's USB ports (if available) to charge the mobile. The adapter is very tiny and obviously very light weighted, you could easily carry it around with you in your pocket.

When connected to the TV (Panasonic TX-P42G20B) the video mode of the TV switches to "1080P, 24Hz and 16.9 aspect ratio". I haven't looked at any of the settings on my TV to see if I can increase the refresh rate yet but everything seemed very smooth either way, 1080P films played flawlessly using BS player lite and looked perfect, the games also worked great but looked very jaggy as they are stretched to 1080P, this is down to the apps.
Here is the info. for the film trailers that were played:
And lastly a quick video demonstrating this. Sorry for the quality and jerkiness of this video, it was recorded using a desire on stock 2.2, the UI and actions etc. are smoother than what it looks in the video.
Yes I know my gaming skills are atrocious particularly for Goldeneye It isn't very easy using the on screen controls!
One thing, which should be noted is that the sound is very low! (hence why you can barely hear the audio of the films and games in the video) When watching standard TV, we have the volume bar at about 3/10, where as with the mobile connected and playing content, I had to turn the volume up to about 6/10 just to be able to hear it clearly. Not sure why this is and I don't know if a different, more expensive MHL adapter would be better for sound level......
To sum up; I can't complain about the adapter at all given the price, does what you expect of it and the only downside (which might not even be due to the adapter) is that the volume is very low and has to be turned up a fair bit to compensate for this.

So you're saying you did have the power cable plugged in the adapter and it still drained the battery on your device? Hunh! I was under the impression it would charge the device... I basically am considering this option so I can buy movies on google play and watch em on my big screen (if i must pay for content, I'd much rather that google get my $s than my stupid cable company)..
But if it's gonna drain my battery 1% per 2 mins despite plugging the adapter in the wall that kinda defeats the purpose of considering the MHL adapter.
Thanks anyways for all the input everybody!
HTC One S MHL Adapter
I purchased an OEM HTC MHL adapter on Amazon for my HTC Sensation. Initially it worked for one movie perfectly and there was very little drain on the battery. When I tried to do it with a second movie there was no image on the TV Screen. Does anyone have any ideas as to why it would not work?? My initial instinct is that the video format is not supported on my television. Would that give me a blank screen?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The video format is processed by the phone and not the tv, so it should work with anything your phone can handle. As to why it works I have no idea, you can try to reconnect the device

what do you think about a combination with an dock which is capable of Data Sync and got a micro USB input to plug in the MHL adapter?
Would be an amazing think. With a 5m HDMI cable i got everythink i want.
With the new version of N64oid, rooted device and 4 Sixaxis controllers its rock and roll time!
Did everyone else using the MHl adapter also get a lot of battery drain?
I used the MHL cable from monoprice and it worked...battery dropped from like 80% to 72% in like 30mins of usage without the power cable plugged in.
Hi, newbie to the forum here and newbie to my HTC One S too.
I have a Cablesson Micro USB to HDMI MHL adaptor that I purchased from amazon.co.uk
This worked great when I received it, even without the addition of power of the adapter, although the battery drain was huge that way of course. However, recently my phone received a software update from my mobile network provider and now it will recognize the adapter and switch to the HDMI connected mode but it quickly loses the connection and flips in and out of that mode. So the screen's flipping between portrait to landscape and the TV loses the picture all together.
Has anyone got any ideas why this is and if it can be sorted out? I'm guessing the software update changed something to do with the phone's power usage or settings because the adapter now has to be powered for anything to happen at all and the little red notification LED at the top of the phone flashes when it's connected and flipping around!
I love the phone and the MHL adapter but I have to say the One S is really starting to frustrate me as I also have signal dropping issues - but that's a story for another thread!

Hello...
I'm on the fence about exchanging my G2X for the Sensation, but this one detail might be deal breaker.
I didn't see this exact topic come up in other discussions about the Sensation using the micro usb to output the HDMI stream to TV via a MHL adaptor. Forgive me if this has been explained before. I searched
What are your thoughts on the Sensation not using a dedicated micro HDMI port like the G2X has?
The main thing that concerns me is output quality with the MHL dongle. There is a vid in the Sensation forums showing a guy only able to output to 1080i (not 1080p), through that dongle. Makes sense to me as it has to be severely limited coming through the micro usb port (audio as well would not be HD, correct?).
I LOVE the fact that the G2X has a micro HDMI port. There's a reason for HDMI ports and I don't see how usb technology (MHL adaptor or not) could ever truly output full HD video and audio??
What are your thoughts? Thanks for your time
I'm guessing the Sensation's the same as the SGS2. The dongle does output 1080P and has a separate USB port for simultaneous charging.

The good news is you can use any HDMI cable with it. The bad news is they're expensive ($35.00 USD) and not available yet. You should also do some research, I remember reading somewhere that there are restrictions on what content can be displayed off of the phone because of HTC Watch.

Interesting....thanks for the quick reply! I will indeed do more research (especially on any content restrictions). Yes I've read quite a bit on the MHL adaptor but didn't see that it can output true HD...and I still have no clue as to how a micro usb port can have full HD running through it with no loss of quality?
Again...I would especially love to know exactly how it's technologically possible for a usb port to stream true full HD video and Audio (dongle or not)? If it could...why would there ever be a need for an HDMI port on any device? Manufactures would have simply used USB ports on HD TV's. PC's etc. Makes no sense to me
It's not a USB port it's a mhl port it has a switch that is activated depending on which cord is plugged in. The specs do say 1080p for a mhl port but that does not mean that HTC allowed that I don't know about limitations HTC put on due to copy protection. Mhl also allows charging when using the HDMI cable but I'm not aware of any devices that do this at this time. Someone said there is a seperate USB port for charging I don't believe this is true.

doesnt make a difference, the port shouldnt be a deal breaker in any decision
I think MHL would be better. HDMI has 19 tiny little pins on there. much more fragile!!!!
MHL is just the USB plug so it's 5 pins!!!

there is a difference. 1) special cord needed not supplied with the phone cheapest i have seen quoted is 30 bucks i cant even find one. - hdmi micro to full 2.59
cant recharge and use at same time(spec is there ) just no hardware that knows to do it yet. so another grand to buy a tv that knows to send a charge down the line when they come out.
3)we know that micro to hdmi works, im guessing mhl does but havent seen it yet so we will see.
For most this may not be a decision maker but it was for me and why i have hung on to the g2x hoping for the fixes because the galaxy s-2 has this same port. they cant even get an os that has been out for over a year im kinda concerned about drivers for a new type connection.

The dongle for the SGS2 has a USB port for simultaneous charging. I'm sure the Sensation's will as well. And yes, you can use a $2.99 converter cable, but with the dongle you can use a standard HDMI cable so you don't have to carry one around (EG: friends house, office presentations, etc.).
I suppose the biggest drawback to the MHL connection is that it A) Requires a special dongle, that in the pics and vids I've seen, is rather large and quite simply ugly. B) Costs an extra 30-35 bucks (total scam). C) As stated before...to fully work as it should, it requires an HD TV with MHL support for charging purposes (so I've read and heard here).
I would guess the biggest reason MHL will be more common than micro HDMI eventually, is that it makes the phone sexier with less ports. For me...give me an extra port...as long as it serves a VERY useful purpose such as HD media output.
For me it might be a deal breaker as one of the HUGE reasons I got the G2X, was because it was a full HD camcorder and I can recored and watch vids on my Plasma via HDMI. Keep it simple....one cheap cord and no silly expensive dongle. Or at the very least HTC...bundle it with the phone.
G2X wins the port war as far as I'm concerned!

perfectly stated. in a year or more mhl will be the standard and the cables/doggle whatever will be cheaper. so im sure this is a good port and will be standard but by the time it is itll be time for a new phone anyway. its like the days of having to buy a special cable to listen through headphones. until they started putting regular head phone jacks on the phone. carrying the doggle isnt a big deal since im sure not everyone has a micro hdmi sitting around so youd have to bring yours anyways. but as stated. for 3 bucks i have hdmi working not 40 bucks. and the charging through the mhl my 2011 model tv doesnt support it and i am hoping it lasts longer than 1 to 1 1/2 years the phone will last without the you need to buy the newest thing feature. that's the feature that the phone starts subliminally sending you when newer devices arrive although the tv is an LG so who knows about the quality of it i have received 3 updates on it since i bought it 2 months ago so beating out the phone so far
but the galaxy s-2 has an mhl port also and i think it would be easier to overlook it for that phone(if it is all that's advertised when it actually makes it to the states)

The Infuse cable won't even work with the SGS2 so I'm guessing there's something funky about it.
Checked at a T-Mo store...
I walked in this afternoon and asked the sales lady what they had available in HTC Sensation accessories....turns out not much. Black rubber phone cover, screen protector, car charger and that's it. She didn't know when they might receive more stuff or even if they would get anything at all.
I also checked on-line and not much more was available (greater variety of phone covers and cases). I guess we'll have to wait a few weeks until more stuff is available.

Has anyone here actually used HDMI with their sensation? If so what resolution does it put out and how exactly does it work?
Im having the same issues my TV says no Signal, called T-Mobile, waste of time and called HTC and the guy says the Phone is not MHL compatible im like are you kidding me you work there and don't know that HTC Sensation needs the MHL Adaptor and then HDMI cable in order to work.
So my Dilemma is either the MHL cable is bad or my TV does not support it, which is weird my TV does 720p and has 2 HDMI Ports and 32 inch screen.
MHL Cable purchased from T-Mobile, it does Charge and HDMI Cable purchased from Amazon and Amazon branded which tested with my Xbox 360 and it works so that cannot be it, anybody know what could be wrong? please help got HTC watch wanting to watch videos to my TV.
I think the guy was just saying that the sensation isn't compatible with the technology at all, not that he didn't know about the adaptor...

the guy was reading the manual for the phone at that point i thought it was going to be useless to get my problem resolved, and the phone is definitely compatible with MHL adaptor to HDMI cable

The tech obviously works as there are many vids out and about with people doing it on the Sensation.
The only thing I can think of is that for the MHL dongle to be able to also charge your phone via the TV, you MUST have a MHL supported TV. Is that the problem maybe? Anyway to charge it separate from the TV, or is that already happening?
Let us know what the verdict is....

I have this, it works fine. It says the light is supposed to turn green when the battery in the rear has charged. But it doesn't unless you take it out and put it back in again. I'm not sure if it overcharges the battery or not. The battery does not get warm or anything, so I assume it switches off.

Once again thanks, but it doesn't have the pass through audio option (which is very important to me). I ended up grabbing http://www.amazon.com/VicTsing-Desktop-Charging-Detachable-Function/dp/B00CMNRLRS/ref=pd_ybh_7 and I will let you all know how it is when I get it Friday.

Sharp, you have the same dock as I received. I can tell from the look of it and the instruction book. Please see my issues below and let me know if you have the same problem.

I ended up buying the dock from an Amazon seller. It is the same exact dock as I originally posted. I am having an issue with the dock right now and am working with the company. I will update you when I have more info.
Some initial impressions:
I am using the dock without a case on the phone. There is a spacer on the dock you can remove so I think most thin cases shouldn't have an issue fitting. When just the power is connected the phone does NOT go into dock mode (if this is important to you). I have it connected to a wall outlet and not by USB to a computer so I don't know if that makes a difference. I will test it out tomorrow. However, this might be solved by plugging an audio connector into the dock as explained below. I think there are also apps which can force dock mode when connected to power anyway. However, the dock DOES charge both the phone and spare battery without issue. The phone is pretty stable in the dock and I can text while the phone is in the dock without knocking it over (as long as I am gentle with it). I would like a little more bottom weight to the unit but it is acceptable. Inserting and taking the phone out of the dock is currently a 2 hand operation. I will try to see if I can come up with a way to do it with one hand but the phone locks into the dock pretty tight. It is difficult to get the spare battery into the slot. There is a little tab in there that pushes in when you put the battery in. I don't know what the purpose is as the slot is pretty tight fit as it is. If you try to push the battery straight down it will not go in. You have to angle it in from the charging side which pushes the tab in and then push down and it will go in. Once you figure out this method it is easy to do.
Now on to the problem. When I took the dock to my office, where I will mainly be using it, I connected both the audio cable and the power cable to the dock and slid my phone in and I got nothing. No charging, no audio, nothing. I checked all the connections pulled them in and out as well as the phone but I still go nothing. I tried just the power and it worked fine as stated above. As soon as I plug the audio cable in the dock stopped charging. I tried just the audio and that worked fine without issue and the phone DID go into dock mode when the audio cable was connected. It played audio fine through my speakers and all was well. However, when I plugged the power cable back into the dock .... you guessed it... audio stopped playing and no charging.
I take it I received a defective unit. It IS a cheap piece of crap from China so it is bound to happen. Perhaps I am having an issue because I am connected to a wall outlet instead of a computer? The company is very willing to work with me and are quick to reply to email. From their first response they seemed puzzled at this operation so I assume that this isn't normal operating procedure. I assume they will send me a new unit and when it arrives I will let you know how it goes. If the new one functions with both the audio and power plugged in I would absolutely recommend this dock.

thanks for your review! hopefully the new unit will function properly.
So here is another update. When I got back in the office today I tried plugging the dock into the USB port instead of the outlet and both power and audio worked without issue. I then tried another wall charger and had the problem again where neither of the ports would work. It was the same brand charger as the first so I tried another and the same problem. I tried a third charger and that one finally worked with both ports and things were dandy.
However, I realized some time later that there was serious static interference sound that I couldn't get to go away unless I unplugged the power. I tried a different outlet, different set of speakers, different chargers, different usb cables, wall vs usb, different outlet and the interference is still there. If I have the volume on the speaker low and the volume on the phone at the highest the interference is almost inaudible (I have very good ears so I still hear it) while the music is still a good volume. However, if the phone audio is lower and the speaker volume higher it is VERY audible. As soon as the music stops or the power plug is pulled the interference goes away. It seems as if something is not properly shielded inside the dock. I followed up with the vendor and will let you guys know what they say.
so after a very long exhausting search for an adapter with USB and HDMI that also had power supply that would charge the Tab i finally found one.
you will see items like this on Amazon etc... but the problem is they have only 1a-1.5a charging adapter which doesnt charge our tablets because they were designed for phones.

you can see the info from their overseas website here but have to use the US site for US folks where there is no information located here. they ship it from Germany to their US website office then to US address.
mine arrives Friday and will test out using external drive with movies on it etc.. also combining using the MHL feature to play that movie on a monitor and also using my HDMI to VGA adapter to play it on a projector all while keeping charged. crossing my finger.
of course this would be great for USB devices like joysticks, keyboard, etc..
Thanks for posting this. Please do keep us updated as to how it goes and what connections you try out. I'd be very curious.
looking nice maybe gonna pick one up too. i buy one from ebay Micro usb hub this one

Does it charge the device the same time?
i am sending it back sadly. it may work for custom Roms but on my older Sammy stuff like my S4 and N3 it does everything you would expect including charging it while it operates. on the Tab S it doesnt even recognize it is attached and does not charge either.
i have been speaking with Lindy and they are going to look at a possible solution but who knows when if ever.
it doesnt appear that anything out there today will accomplish this on the new Sammy tablets as i have looked at everything on the web i think

The inability to charge this tablet is a major PITA.
Time to consider Miracast or Chromecasting, that would free up the charging port.

Chromecast works great with the Plex app on the Tab S. Once you go wireless, you will never go back to wired Hdmi cables.

I agree however most board rooms that setup is not going to work. I also have a projector for kids movies outside and several other things like that.
I just received MHL adapter from Eeekit. It works only partialy. It does screen mirroring but it does not charge. Battery icon shows red x and status "Not charging" when connected. And another problem is that it only supports 1080p with 24Hz refresh rate. It is fine for bluray ripped movies but not for anything else including games and all online streams (NBC Sports Live Extra for example) cause they are probably streamed at 30fps so video is choppy. I had the same issue with oem Samsung MHL 2.0 dapter and my Galaxy S3. So is is there any other way to mirror Galaxy Tab S screen with 60Hz and without using a router?
Lucky in my case that mhl cable that i bough work fine. ..
Play Real Racing

Do you have access to any 1080p tv and could verify if it will give 60Hz at 1080p? And where did you buy this cable? Thanks.
Yes it also work fine in full hd at 60hz. Just my kids are now using the tv so dont want them to disturb me later. ?

Looks useful with the limited storage available on the PixelC
I am curious if those ports will work as OTG hosts. That would be quite useful, but I'm not willing to pay $4o to test it myself lol

I preordered one for the card slots as the only flash media i buy is in microsd format.
It says it should ship in december, I'll post results here when I receive it.
I messaged Benson Leung on Google+, asking him if he recommended any USB OTG hosts. He said that OTG does not exist anymore with Type C. He recommended that I get this cable: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VTZ7GM0
Hopefully that hub meets the Type C spec, since it seems that 90% of cables and adapters don't.
That cable looks identical to the one I received from google in the UK, purchased from google with the tab.

Just to let you guys know:
I contacted Benson Leung and asked him about USB-C hubs for the Pixel C and he said he has one on its way and will review it shortly.
Ok, I received it. I tried powering the PixelC and it works but not at the same speed as the same charger connected directly. I estimate about 1-1.2A
I connected microsd card and it seems to work fine. Not tried using the usb type A ports yet.
My main issue is that it the position and size make it feel quite delicate. It is in the exact place I hold my pixel C and the length makes it feel like a lever on the port. I tried adding a small tab to brace it against the tablet at the other end but that feels no better. I would prefer it connect with a short cable.
I might use it in extreme cases, when wireless is not an option such as on flights, but the aesthetics and the power compliance issue make it hard to recommend.
Does this Hub really work on the Pixel C ? I mean, can i use a USB Ethernet Adapter, or a USB Stick while charging the Pixel ?

Thanks a lot. Do you possibly have a USB A to ethernet you could try it with? I'm curious to see if it'd work.
Could it be an idea to use it with a USB C extension cable, something like this?

I have a USB3 3 port hub with ethernet (an Anker AH212). I get ethernet connectivity just fine, although I don't see any options for configuration, so you're stuck with DHCP.
Nice idea on the extension cable, I was hoping one would appear. I wonder if Benson Leung has tested any.
Skally could you please elaborate on that? Do you know the exact Name of the Hub you have? (mby even with Link) would love to get my hands on that!
Anyone have pictures of this thing on your Pi-C?
This:
http://www.amazon.com/HT-UC001-Shuttle-Delivery-MacBook-ChromeBook/dp/B019R9ILTG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459363576&sr=8-2&keywords=hootoo+usb-c+hub
It might be the thing we are after with a short extension cable. Its just super pricey, and only the two most expensive versions have the charge pass through at $60 and $70 USD.
Has anyone used any accessories from HooToo and can remark on the quality?
Well I went ahead and ordered the cheapest mode. It has 3 USB3 and the SD card reader for $35. That gives me what I need on the road, and should give me some impression of the build quality and compatibility with the C. Should have it next Tuesday.

The usb-c is a bit loose... have to really press it in to get a confident fit. I did get it to read an SD card, this was my most needed feature. Have not yet tested the USB ports. I feel that for the price it could be better.

I have one of these. I've yet to use it extensively but can confirm that the USB ports work (4Gb stick used so far) but haven't tried them along with pass-through charging (though this works independently). Build quality seems pretty reasonable but a lot of money seems to have been spent on the presentation/packaging, a little Apple, with sculpted box and foam holding the hub.
Hi,
I've recently received a Pixel C as a replacement for an older tablet which insurance paid for (Thankfully).
Before I seen this thread I got one of the Satechi Passthrough hubs pictured at the start.
I havent had a huge play with it, But soo far I would say I'm fairly happy with it. it feels a little loose but thats not an issue when being used with the magnetic keyboard (So I dont touch the tablet)
Best bit about it tho, if you connect a mouse you basicly have a full laptop!!
I'm stoaked.

This works as advertised, though I couldn't check the HDMI. Only one problem: the external power doesn't seem to reach the Pixel C, which makes it kind of useless to me. Not sure where the problem is.
