Quick and dirty. Just does the Droid Sans font, but user configurable shutter period, camera timer, text to show and color.
Just like Penki, works best when the shutter is open for 15-30 seconds, at f/8 and larger apertures.
The capability is there for rendering bitmaps, but it's locked right now because I haven't worked out the kinks yet.
Take a few photos and post back... let me know if it works well!

Here's one I took...
Looks pretty OK to me.
done really well thanks!
there are only some very minor issues
1. Usability... when getting my phone and camera ready I accidentally touched the text button instead of the go button. I would suggest having a main page with a big go button and the settings available through the menu button.
2. A tutorial in the beginning would be nice. I was confused at first because I was unsure of how to hold my phone. Users might not know what you mean by pass distance.
3. Although the tip at the end is useful, perhaps you could have a checkbox so you could "never see this tip again "
4. Good luck. Marvellous effort I must say

EDIT : the L's seem to be a bit wide although it may be the way im holding it...
EDIT2 : colour picker!!!
Thanks!
Will definitely consider using the context menu rather than the pref screen. The pref screen was so much easier to code, however, so the menu/go button will take a bit.
As for the tutorial, I'm way ahead of you - an XDA friend is looking into the tutorial for me right now, and depending on what he finds, we might be able to squeeze a tutorial in (even though that would easily double the size of the apk!)
The checkbox/color picker suggestions are definitely noted... these should be low-hanging fruit. (I'm thinking of kanging CyanogenMod code for the latter)
I actually read about Dentsu London's project on Giz before I saw your post, so I jumped on the chance to bring Android to parity with iOS. Thanks for inspiring the app, Shokwaav!

Version 1.0.3 out...
Version 1.0.3 is out on the market.
Pretty significant changes, I think if you like bulb photography, you'll like the app!
Thanks to Shokwaav for the initial nudge, and to Nemuro for artistic help.
As the title would suggest, this is LifeDropper - the eyedropper tool for real life.
LifeDropper is designed to determine the colour of objects in the real world, and then present you with what it finds.
Instructions are provided when you open the app. Please leave feedback and make feature requests! Bug reports are extremely welcome!
Important note regarding feedback: when providing feedback, please include your phone model, Android version, ROM version (if applicable), and a link to the logcat (preferably posted on www.pastebin.com). If you don't know how to provide log information, please don't ask for directions in this thread.
Another important note regarding feedback: be brutal. If you hate the icon, tell me. If you hate the layout of something, tell me. If you hate the name, tell me. If you hate the concept...don't tell me that. Also tell me good things. Lots of good things.
Without further ado,
Market Version
Happy tagging!
Great app! Very unique, I love it! Keep up the good work my man
Hey,
great idea!
Taking screens and analyizing colors seems to work for me, but upon saving and sharing, app crashes .
(replace 'xx' with 'tt', since i can't post links yet)
Log for save-crash:
hxxp://pastebin.com/9FhrUMNc
Log share-crash:
hxxp://pastebin.com/XB3U6xVE
Suggestion(s):
- change camera overlay (the bright rectangle in camera view)'s size, so that it reflects the number of pixels being analyized. (e.g. 1px analyzed: only cross, 144px -> 12*12 rectangle, 2500px = 50*50rectangle (you get the point )
- make color values selectable (text), so you can copy/paste them somewhere else.
Besides that, great concept, icon is ok aswell .
Cheers!
EDIT:
almost forgot:
phone: Samsung Galaxy S2
android: 2.3.3
rom: XWKE7
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback and the logcat! I'll look into the issues you're getting. I assume you are using a different locale than en_CA or en_US (as it appears you are from Germany), and that's where the share issue is coming from. I was considering having the size change for the overlay, I think that'll be a definite feature now.
As for the save error, I'm confused. The logs don't appear to be showing me anything. Everything seems to be going fine and then suddenly my Activity is force finished. I'll need to do some more investigating in that department.
EDIT: The share logcat confuses me as well, even though I'm sure I know what the issue is. I think the developer of your ROM has set the log level to very low.
Yep locale setting seems to be the problem. After switching it from de_DE to en_US saving and sharing are working fine.
Seems like everything from verbose upwards is being logged, i could give you a filtered log if needed?
(Fyi it's the stock rom if thats any helpful)
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
That's alright. If changing the locale solved the issue, then the locale is the problem
Would you be so kind as to post some screenshots of the app in order to entice users?
Thanks!
I'll try to get some screenshots as soon as possible, unfortunately my phone's battery exploded. I have a new one on the way and it should be here in the coming days. If anyone else would like to post some screenshots they're welcome to!
(I've tried to take some through the emulator, but they don't work because a) I'm testing a camera-oriented app on the camera-less emulator, and b) the camera uses a surface which updates while the screenshot is being taken so they end up breaking.)

Shoudn't you have some way to calibrate the colors with a graycard? A color is highly dependent on the light that is emitted on it. A red object in daylight will give a diferent color than the same red object in fluorescent TL light...
@dirtsky are you using the en_US or en_CA locale?
@marko! I would suggest trying to redownload, I haven't heard of this issue as of yet.
@willverduzco thanks! There have been 300 downloads since last night thanks to the article!
@michaelarnauts I'm aware, but the thing is, LifeDropper is designed to capture colours as they are seen. If you see a colour under light, LifeDropper is viewing it in the same light.
An update that fixes the saving/sharing FC (due to locale) is now in the first post.
Wow, wonderful application! Working great on stock Droid Incredible... Few force closures now and then but still very useful!
@Cellulah is there any way you could provide a logcat for the FCs you're getting?
This is really cool. I bet someday you could do live updating with histogram data in the camera view!
Sent from my Thunderbolt das BAMF remix
@rycheme glad you like the concept! Awesome idea! I'm looking into doing capturing without having to take a picture (like Barcode Scanner).
Remember, if you like the app, mash the share button!
The next update will include linking to the currently under-construction LifeDropper site for the share feature, so the link at the end will be a link to your colour.
i'm sure i'm not alone on this... I'd really appreciate it if my camera could focus on the middle portion before taking the picture....
i would also really love this if there was a way to calibrate this stuff... maybe print out
100% cyan box... 100% Magenta.....100% Yellow... and whatever other colour might be necessary...
by the way ... this is an amazing App!!!
If it comes to the market ...i'll definitely buy it...

Possiblity of adding Quick tiles support and voice?

Quick Tiles have been developed and have just gone live in 0.12.alpha.
Voice activation is a different story. There is Google Now and Google Assistant to take advantage of. First one can only use their commands ("set an alarm" etc but not really anything related to our app. No "turn on the lights".) The latter has actions that make sense but it is only in a conversation. (Turn on the light, do you want to turn on the light?, What room? Living-room, etc.). It is quicker to buy a button and get it even installed. So, we need a better alternative like Google Assistant Direct Actions. This is not available without signup (yes, I did signup but no response yet). This is for home automation and suits me fine. It is just the wait until Google's response.
wow 7,50 €lol...hell na
i rather use 4 free apps, that do exactly the same ...even so u might have one or two feature ...i wouldn't recommend anybody to buy this DLC app haha
I bought the app to support the developer, all the upcoming features sound like a dream come true to me. I also like the slick look of the graphics, so thanks a lot and keep up to good work. To anybody else reading this, go ahead and buy this app, it's nice and handy and the upcoming features are even more awesome. Just skip a lunch and starbucks, cheap bastards.
Please, widgets!
I just bought the app, and I'm excited about the features, but I am curious about the quick tiles. When I tap on a tile, it just sends me into the configuration screen without toggling the settings of my lights at all. How do I use these to quickly change the settings of my lights? What am I missing?
I have also noticed that my lights will remain stuck on an effect, even if I have tried to change the bulb status via another method (Alexa, or the button on the back of the Hue Go, for examples).

Thank you for your positive response. At the moment I am working on bug fixes mainly. I expect that most errors have been dealt with for now. Next features I am working on are the schedules, rules, sensors. These should come through in one of the next releases. Some parts are quite far by now. Main issue is lack of time due to school! Soon it is holidays again and frees up time.
For those who have reported "unknown lights" in the section "all lights", I never knew how many lights Hue Essentials would pick up. I have a hard time finding those lights myself in shops and on the internet. Bought some of those IKEA, Osram, etc, for testing, but must say that Hue lights from Philips are best of them all. Just too bad the Hue lights are so expensive. IKEA lights could do with a real improvement...
Many people joined the translation program through the app. Really wonderful to see all those languages coming through! Thanks for all your support!

Have you configured the tile in those settings? If so, it could be a bug that needs to be fixed. Let me know the details of your tile action and type of device.
If you start the effect through Hue Essentials and try to stop it through another method, like Alexa, it will not stop. Effects are played locally and not running on the bridge. Note that this may change in the future releases of the app. You need to stop the effect through the buttons in the app/notification.

Yes, I get the message. Widgets are on the wishlist (I do not know if this is the same as Santa's list but perhaps we get it before Christmas). For now I first need to complete another request; IKEA TRADFRI Gateway will be integrated as another bridge in one of the next releases.
Is there also a functionallity to add custom actions to the hue dimmers for every button, a bit the same as iconnecthue voor ios?

We love iConnectHue as that developer has shown what Hue can do! Surely, we still need to work on the sensors (smart controls). Our idea is to create extra functionality. There is just a bit too much on the wish-list. First, I am adding IKEA gateway to one of the next releases. Next is scenes and more effects, maybe we will have a look at entertainment at the same time. Widgets are on the list.
Room/Group Colours?
Maybe I'm missing something but I see that I can apply the same brightness level, scenes, and effects to all the lights in a room but I can't see how to set all lights in a room to the same colour without going into each individual light setting...?
Thanks!

The IKEA Trådfri is still under development and not released yet. I think it takes a few more weeks. Still sorting out some bugs
Once it is included in Hue Essentials:
It depends on what you want. If you only want to use the Trådfri gateway, you can just delete your old bridge and then scan for the gateway. If you want to use Trådfri and Hue at the same time, then you would need multiple bridges.
Hey everybody!
To God be the glory, I've been making some custom roms on XDA for a while, but I have decided to try to learn some new things by taking an app developer course. I've made a few apps, and I thought I would share them here as well. This app is open source, you are welcome to go to the Github and post issues, review and or copy the code (it is Apache-2.0 licensed), or download the app and enjoy!
These are my first apps, and I know they need a little improvement. So please feel free to leave a comment! But please remember, the best criticism is constructive.
If you do check out my Github, note that just about every line of my code includes a comment as to what it does or why it exists, so if you are like me and new to Android programming, be sure to check it out to see how it works! Also, in my Github are many "small apps" in the "apps_small" repo, which are apps I either made for the class, or made on the side to test out some feature or function. Hopefully that would be useful to someone.
Without further ado:
A simple, open source app that allows you to search posts on Craigslist.
This app allows you to search Craigslist and save on bandwidth at the same time. The search is only text, which presents you with a list of your search criteria. Then, when you select a posting that you wish to see, it will be displayed as normal in a special web view window. With simple colors and controls, this helps you focus on what is really important: the posts!
Other than the Craigslist postings, there are NO ADVERTISEMENTS!
This app allows you to save on mobile data, as only a small picture of the item is loaded with a price, date, and description (if provided by the poster). You can also click the web browser to open and view the full post if you desire!
You are welcome to stop by the Github (link in app) or website (link in app) to see progress for new features, or if you are into open source coding, you are welcome to submit pull requests and get involved!

One thing I would suggest immediately is to do away with that background and change the font color. A simple black background with white text would work better, but ideally a Material Design layout would be best!

MishaalRahman,
I have some thought to your proposal, and realized you are right, to a degree.
I happen to like the color scheme as is, but I realize that others may prefer something else. The sell cars in every color, so why not let just Craigslist come in more color options?
So, starting with version 1.6, you now have the choice of several colors for title bars, text, backgrounds, and buttons! There are also several pictures to choose from. So now you may have your preferred black background with white text, and I may have my cyan city! Everybody wins!
Thanks for the great suggestion! Please see OP for a few screenshots.

Great suggestion. One problem though: if the user types anything, like a price or search criteria, then the keyboard covers that button. So if the search button was down there, the user would have to hit the back button to make the keyboard disappear, then hit the search button. Do you think that would confuse new users?

After some testing and feedback, it looks like you are right. I have added the search button to the bottom right, and I also added the feature that when you press the enter button on the keyboard after typing, it will search.

The reason for why it's white is because it's to avoid possible burn ins. And I read somewhere that you can download this app called "navbar app" which can change it to black if you're really wanted too.

Navbar app resets to defaults, eg, not functional on op5T
For me "Navbar Apps" does the trick, you just need to grand accessibility service, you don't even need root. I just disabled the color changing animation.
Any screens?
Navbar apps work but not everytime. Like - It doesn't work perfectly on Nova Launcher and Google App.
For the most apps the navbar app improved the ugly grey navbar. Facebook in App browser for eg forces the grey navbar. I attached chrome screenshots with enabled black navbar and the default grey one. Nova launcher works perfect for me.
I've never been a fan of the black navbar. I've always thought it should match the color of the top status bar.
So far, using the Light theme, the off-white navbar looks pretty good.

I really miss some of the ROMs from the good old days. Where Devs would take stock ROMs deodex them, decompile individual apps make edits like you mentioned above and smali edits. In some cases the end result would be a stock based ROM with all the extra options.
This was all before Xposed.

White color only makes it burn in harder.
I have not had any issues with the navbar apps from play store. I set to static black and stays that way. I would not mind a fully deodexed stock ROM though, That would be nice. No other modifications, just deodexed, fixed nav of course why this thread is here, and boom. lol

+1 to this, I would love to see a deodexed stock OOS for our device that has a few modification options. Similar to what Fulmics did with the LG G3 (and other LG devices). He is the author of that deodex tool after all. Probably most of it could be done through modifying this same system APK & flashing on a rooted device, something I'm considering toying around with (but it would be time consuming...). Only problem with solutions like this is when new system updates come out you need to wait for an updated version of this as well in many cases.
Easier just to install Navbar apps from play

No, the *off white* color used with the grey buttons reduces burn-in greatly. A black navbar on an OLED screen simply causes the pixels in the navbar strip to remain deactivated for prolonged periods of time, causing the buttons themselves and every other part of the screen whose pixels remain active more often to degenerate at a much faster rate, causing the burn-in effect. Since the nav-bar isn't completely white, the pixels in that area aren't being driven as hard as they would be, were they stark white, or as white as the display can go. The grey buttons/icons help reduce burn-in as well, as the pixels are still active and "lit" in these areas and are not being driven the hardest possible (stark white on OLED drives the pixels harder than off-white, grey, and most other colors displayed by the phone).
