[Q] [ZOOM 2] What ROMs work with MZ616? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a Xoom 2 MZ616 (WiFi & 3G) and I'm wondering what ROMs are compatible.
I'm going to root using Dan Rosenburg's method, hopefully that works.
I'm looking at trying either ICS 2.0.0 by Team EOS or ICS 4.0.4 AOKP, but I don't understand whether I need a Wingray, Stingray, _cdma or _everest build. Can someone please help?

Nothing will work.
You can root your xoom 2 but it's bootloader is still locked.
So you CANNOT install any roms.

no recovery for xyboard and xoom 2

I also have a xoom 2 and this is kind of disappointing, not to mention the fact that it shipped with honeycomb.
Brand new device, fresh out of the oven with a deprecated os. Nice move Motorola.
Guess will have to wait it out 'till Motorola ships ICS for xoom 2 in never-ever-land.

Unfortunately I think from now on I would by devices that already have soaked into the market and have development... Sad to say but we can't rely on manufacturers
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk 2

Yeah as they all said, custom ROM's or custom recoveries do not work at all. Maybe one day in the future when Motorola decides to be nice and unlock the bootloader. But for now hang in there with Motorola Honeycomb as its not all that bad.

It's not all that good either lol...although mine is more bearable now I'm using ADW launcher.
As for the bootloader, there's plenty of debate/shouting/general aggression towards Motorola on the Motorola Xoom 2 forums...surely they can't ignore all these complaints? I'm sure that's what happened with the Experia X10 back in the day.
IG =]

I wish I'd researched this before buying. I just took it for granted that I'd be able to root and flash a custom ROM.
Ah well, live and learn and all that I'm very happy with it as-is (rooted w/ADW Launcher) but I eagerly await ICS in some form or other.

What about us who bought the xoom2 through a carrier are we now not only waiting for Motorola to hurry with our ICS but also for the carriers to add their crap too?

nothing for xyboard and xoom2
no fastboot files
no sbf
no custom recovery
we only have root

I complained to Motorola about their **** service to customers, I was close to buying the Galaxy 10.1 and wished I had, the Xoom 2 is pretty crap always crashes and should be on 4.0.2 at least..... I'll never buy a motorola product again, they were **** 5 years ago and they are still **** now.

My unit was updated last november to version 4.0.4.
So far, so good.
But seems that there won't be anymore updates from Motorola to Xoom2/Xyboard tablets.

Recovery works with Safestrap 3.12 for Xoom2.
Fastbootfiles also exist

What custom ROMs can be installed on MZ616?

ICS and atrix 2

not sure if anyone else noticed that motorola has a tentative upgrade to ICS list and the atrix 2 is NOT on that list. razr, bionic and xoom devices.
https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/manager/softwareupgrades
IF motorola decides to upgrade the A2 to ICS, by the time they blur it up, and att approves it, there will be much better out and you'll be at your next upgrade point.
No, most of us will have just sold the phone for something else or bit the bullet and kept it while getting something else. Not exactly an upgrade in the most carrier specific sense of the term.
And yes that thought occurred to me. I'm surprised they haven't updated the list to include the Atrix 2, since it's so similar to some other phones they're upgrading to ICS.

Sigh........ I love this phone, I don't understand why everybody leaves it behind... Goddamn AT&T and Motorola!!
Motorola said it would be up to 6 weeks after ICS source code was released before they would give an update to what devices would get ICS. Right now to make the assumption we won't get it is just pure speculation since it has not been stated anywhere that we won't.

for the phones they have planned now, which is the razr and bionic. it will be a 6-8 months minimum if they choose to upgrade the atrix 2.
by then, jellybean will be releasing...
i've seen this with the x10, which att finally approved the x10a to 2.1 in june... and it never received the 2.3 update that the x10i received over seas. same phone, same hardware, just no att iron fist.
Im gonna disagree with ya. Coming from the OG ATRIX back when it was running froyo, it got gingerbread when 90%+ was still running froyo. AT&T has been better at pushing updates to their phones then any of the big 3 in my opinion. How many phones has been listed as getting ICS for sure from AT&T? Vivid and Skyrocket? ATRIX 2 was released just before them.
I know you've had problems with your phone. But take away the problems you were having would you still be getting a new phone? I have had zero problems with my phone and would bet that everyone else that has had the same luck would be very content with their phones also.

Hmmm....
I think it is coming. But as it turns out I sold my Atrix 2 today and decided to move back to CDMA service. I have just not been all that happy with AT&T in my area. SOOoooo, don't laugh. I bought a Samsung Vitality with Muve Music on cricket. It will tie me over and I am excited about the included music service. I am alot better with CDMA over GSM, so it looks like I will be grabbing a razr and getting it over to cricket. so long atrix 2 guys

That's not true, the X10 did get 2.3, officially, through AT&T.
That page hasn't been updated since before ICS code was released. Notice NONE of the new phones are on it nor is our MB865
This page details plans for Android software upgrades only; other various routine updates will be delivered to optimize device experiences and these will be communicated separately when deployed.
A note about Ice Cream Sandwich:
We are planning to upgrade DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, Motorola RAZR™, Motorola XOOM™ (including Family Edition) and DROID BIONIC™ by Motorola to Ice Cream Sandwich. We will provide more precise guidance on timing after post-public push of Ice Cream Sandwich by Google, as well as any possible additions to this list of devices.

This quote was there before the source code to ICS. Notice below where each phone is listed by country. None of those phones are listed nor is ours. What I'm saying is that this page hasnt been updated for some time
Also take note in that statement "as well as any possible additions to this list of devices." See they even State Possible Additions which could equal any number of devices.
honestly, that's my biggest issue. no one knows for sure and motorola will not say otherwise.
i have 7 days left on my 30 day return, i will not get stuck with another upgrade locked device. motorola will not say, i have no more free time with this phone.

i've been done with the phone, i went to att on tuesday to exchange, they informed me that there are new phones coming on sunday, i'm waiting to see what is coming and if current models drop in price.
One thing you will notice about the devices that were listed, they are only the Verizon devices. I still believe that we will get ICS on our phones but ATT is usually tight lipped on their updates, they happen, you just don't hear about it. I believe that part of that statement is Verizon marketing.
I think it will have an up date. Moto has no AT&T phones for the ICS update. What better phone to upgrade than this. Samsung has gs2 but honestly I think this will see the update. We have a webtop, dual core. I just don't see AT&T and moto "not" updating this. They are tight lipped as stated before.

Personally I feel if moto doesn't want to support the device anymore they should be obligated to unlock the bootloader so we can support it ourselves.

CLockworkmod or Recovery in Xoom 2

Is any clockworkmod or similar for xoom 2?? Any way to boot the xoom 2 from usb hd?
Best Regards.
I waiting for it, too. Sometimes I regret I didn't get first xoom, when I see how many Roms I could try... It seems we have to wait some time.
Yeah I haven't seen a good explaination as to why the xoom2 and xyboard tablets haven't been hacked properly. As far as i've seen, it doesnt look like anyone ever will either. It's such a shame, it is such a great and robust tablet. One would have thought that motorola products would have gotten some love (being owned by google now n all). Very big dispointment, xoom2 could be so much more with a decent recovery.
Will never buy motorola again thats for sure. shame that the hackers choices have so much influence over which tablets people will buy... really sinks the boat for so many kickass devices.

Nothing to do with hackers choices and everything to do with locked bootloader from Motorola... If it were unlockable I guess it would have a lot of developement. At the moment "hackers" can't do anything because there is NO WAY for custom recovery to be installed. The original Xoom is unlockable because it is a Google Experience Device. The Xoom2 is a better device (no tegra2 lags on 2D graphics) but locked up!

It's an fxz (how they find these things I have no clue). Don't even think about flashing it though. If the international MB865 ICS leaks haven't helped us then I don't think this will be of any help either :\
So, since I'm essentially clueless on the actual coding and development aspects of this type of stuff - I'm no stranger to flashing ROMs and testing them out, been doing that for almost a decade now and still doing it between several devices (Axim X50v/X51v, HP iPAQs, Nexus S, Galaxy S, and now my Atrix 2) - but I don't understand what the actual problem is with this ROM with respect to the AT&T model of the Atrix 2.
I'm going to guess there's something going on with the Chinese/international leaked ROMs that will completely bork/hose/obliterate the AT&T model if I or anyone else attempts to install it, perhaps even permanently bricking it so...
Obviously I'm not about to try it myself, I'll leave that to the more talented folks around here already working on trying to get ICS for all of us. The Atrix 2 is such a damned nice device from the hardware perspective, and yes I'd love to get ICS on it (I know Motorola is working on it but as usual they're so tight-lipped about everything we're never going to know when it'll be available until it actually is, Cheesecake or not...), and now with having messed around with Jelly Bean on the Nexus S for a few hours - wasn't great but it was noticeably "butter" smooth as they're claiming - that gives me very high hopes that ICS will make an appearance on the Atrix 2 soon.
Come on, Motorola, if you can't get talented people to get this done, there's a bunch of people here on XDA that would do it practically for free just to get it done once and for all (not saying they wouldn't like to be compensated, obviously, maybe a free Droid RAZR MAXX or whatever for their efforts).
Yah, I know, Motorola could care less about this phone already, it's such a shame that this "disposable society" is what it is. Hell, I still use my Dell Axim X51v almost daily, and it's close to 7+ years old now, still running a custom Windows Mobile 6.5 from LennySH... I don't believe hardware is "useless" until the moment it actually doesn't work anymore, at all, totally hopelessly bricked or dead.
I'm impatient and I know it, so are most of you reading this.
If I thought a petition would help Motorola just skip ICS completely and jump right to Jelly Bean for the Atrix 2 I'd start one, but obviously that's just a waste of time. Sad we'll most likely never see Jelly Bean on the Atrix 2 officially 'cause it most certainly is a device that could manage it (minus a few aspects like NFC and whatever).
Bleh... just rambling, sorry. But I really would like to get some kind of basis for why the Chinese leaked ROMs are a no-no on the AT&T model, if anyone can spare a few minutes to explain, and be as thorough as you like as I'm all about details.
Thanks...

The ME865 (the Chinese version of the atrix2), has different hardware in it. There are also 3 slightly different versions of the MB865 (also the atrix2)... confused yet....
What it means is that the if you own a US AT&T version, you can not flash any of the international versions of the firmware, because there are slight hardware differences in all of the versions, and the AT&T US version has a whole different radio on top of the different wifi, gps, and GSM/GPRS/UMTA&S chipsets.
Well, that pretty much covers it.
I really do love this device, it's got an awesome form factor, feels fantastic in the hand, same screen size (diagonal) as my beloved HTC HD2 which I don't have anymore (but yes I'll get another one someday just 'cause it's the baddest portable device ever made for enthusiasts). Great cameras, there's really nothing to dislike about it so far, at least to me. Still on the lookout for a Lapdock as well (if my research has been accurate, I can use the original Atrix Lapdock with the Atrix 2 and a small mod of flipping the connectors on the Lapdock around - I hope I'm correct in that).
But ICS would definitely be nice to get, and soon. It's just a shame that Motorola Mobility is so far behind the curve with things. I had hoped that Google's acquisition of them might improve the situation but, with Google's announcement they were buying but leaving them alone to keep on doing what they've been doing, that basically nipped that hope right in the bud.
Anyway, thanks for the answer.

[XOOM 2/XYBOARD] [Q] ROM Compatibility

So given that Safestrap exists for this device, I've been researching just what it takes to port something like CyanogenMod over to a new device. I'm a long term user of Safestrap back in my Droid 3 / Droid 4 days and can confirm it is reliable and does exactly as claimed...
Now, we all know that the Xoom and the Xoom 2 are almost exactly the same hardware. Is there any particular reason that a Safestrap'd device couldn't have a Xoom ROM installed in a ROM-Slot?
I noticed that Hashcode took down the links to Safestrap 3.12 for the Xoom 2, however it is still available and if it works as it should (I haven't tested it yet due to not having any ROMs to test it with), does anybody know of any particular reason why a similar-spec (Wifi+3G for example) Xoom ROM would not be compatible with a Xoom 2?
Np xoom(tegra) rom will be compatible with a xyboard or xoom2(omap4). They have completely different chips inside. If the xoom 2 users are lucky, they'd get a ported rom out of xyboard 4.1.2 official from community.

Ahh my bad, I derped on that one. I missed the chipset change when comparing specs... d'oh. There's plenty of work on other OMAP4 devices from Motorola, although the amount of effort it would take to make software from a phone like the Droid 4 work on a Xoom 2 would be incredible. Though it would be worth it.
I haven't researched it fully myself but i hear the the Droid Razr XT910 shares a lot of hardware with the Xoom2/XYBoard. If someone was to attempt a port i imagine that would be the place to start.

Anyone know if any custom rom's are coming?

Well they are still working on getting a custom recovery to work properly (at least on the 7.0) so custom roms are a good ways away. I would not expect to see much in the way of custom roms for the 7.0 until around Christmas time.

That's what I was thinking, other similar devices have custom rom's. I don't mind the stock rom right now but having cyanogen or paranoid would be awesome.
Anyhow, hope to see news come December or in the new year.
Yeah, the tablet is very good, but I heard that because this tab 7.0 uses Marvell hardware, not Qualcomm like 8.0 and 10.1, building custom recoveries and ROMs is not an easy task to do. Even the root method (vRoot) is not 100% working, so I'm staying with stock, non rooted for now.
The same was with Tab 3 7.0 (also Marvell hardware, but older chip), but it eventualy got properly working recovery and CM11. But that happened half a year after it was released...
I'm looking forward to using this tab in the same way I use my S3 (Rooted OMNI with lots of customizations), but we have to be patient.
Not to hijack a thread but I'm assuming these devices have unlocked boot loaders. Why is injecting root into an Odin file a harder thing than it was on the tab 2?

Just out of curiosity, I have one question that I have to ask. Why do you all want custom ROMs for this tablet? The stock rom on the Tab 4 8.0 model is very slick in my opinion. If the tablet is working fine for you, why mess it up with a custom ROM? I'm speaking from personal experience here. I upgraded from a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" model this past Saturday (for my birthday) and I used to mess with the custom ROMs all of the time on the Tab 2 but here's what I found after trying them out for a little while. A lot of the custom ROMs did not meet my needs as well as the stock ROM did. I have royally messed up tablets doing this and had to do a factory reset to get the tablet out of its funk. The last time I flashed a ROM, one good thing did come out of it. I realized how nice KitKat was on the tablet and made me want to upgrade my tablet to one that already had that OS already installed on it.
That's just my two cents worth on this. Take it for what it's worth.

Because performance and TouchWiz, that's why.
I honestly have no idea why someone thought that it's a good idea to put a white backgroud to menus... MY EYES!!! :<
Perhaps here will be the beginning ...
NOOK will start to sell a new Android Bookreader on the base of Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.7. Nook devices wer normally rooted before they were sold on the street:

Just out of curiosity, I have one question that I have to ask. Why do you all want custom ROMs for this tablet? The stock rom on the Tab 4 8.0 model is very slick in my opinion. I just asked because I think Samsung has done an excellent job with this tablet and can't see why a custom ROM would be necessary in my opinion..

Also just because you have the 8" version doesn't mean we all do. I would also love a custom rom.
Sorry I even asked! I just decided to ask and give my opinion which is based on my own personal experience. I didn't expect that it would ruffle some feathers. I had 7" tablets until just one week ago.. I've never had great luck with custom ROMs personally because I always felt that there was always something missing when I was using them. When I would flash the tablet back to stock, that feeling went away for me. Now that's just my personal experience. Please don't get all upset because I dared to express my opinion here. I thought that this may help someone who is on the fence about using custom ROMs on their tablet. These are just confessions from a former custom ROM flashaholic.

Don't worry bro, its just you're not the type of person who sees the potential of this tab. Regardless, you have the right to opinion, but not everyone has the to agree with your opinion. Its your choice, I am not telling you what to do, but that just my opinion.

I'm a lady 404. I take offense that you say that I'm just not the type of person who sees the potential of this tab. I've just learned from personal experience to be make the best out of what I'm given. Multiple times of messing up my tablets and bringing them back to life have taught me that. Also, I'm one of those people who tries to take lemons and make lemonade. I'm not saying that everyone has to agree with my opinion but don't be mean about the reason why you disagree with me.
