I'm kinda in a daze from losing my Nexus S last night. The hangover is probably contributing to said daze. I don't have one of those security apps installed. I must have forgotten to restore it when I flashed a new ROM. My inner child is on my inner floor bawling his eyes out at the moment.
Anyway, my question is, what can I do to ensure minimal loss of my privacy. I have already changed all my passwords. Does this automatically unsync my account on the phone? I mean, will the phone ask whoever has it to re-enter the new password? What else am I forgetting? What else can I do?
Would appreciate it if "You should have"s are avoided. Thanks!
I know for sure that if you have changed your Google/Gmail Password, that the phone will prompt for a new one. As far as 'unsyncing' I do not know. I didn't check to see if my contacts/emails/calendar etc were removed when I changed the password and the phone prompted for a new one.
I will change my password again, see what happens and let you know.
*****EDIT*****
I changed my password for my phone, I got a notification about a sign in error, that prompted for a password. The dialing functions still worked as normal, any emails that you had cached were also visibile as well as the calendar. I rebooted without updating the password and could still call out as normal, but when I tried to access the Gmail app, it tried to sync the inbox, but prompted for a password right away.
I don't have any apps installed with other sensitive information, but I would imagine those would function as normal.
Hope this helps.
You could try lookout mobile security "plan b" will help find it.

Hmm sorry to hear that dude, i would probably be bawling on the floor too!
Although... i probably will install one of those security apps now...
Thanks for your help, guys.
Even if you don't change password but someone change sim card, android will require reenter password for sync

I don't know if Plan B would work seeing as how his Google Account is tied to the market account. Because he changed his password and the phone lost connection with the Google account, I don't believe remote installs will work, but I could be wrong.

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. I picked up a new Nexus S(not SAMOLED unfortunately) and synced it up and everything. Finally got to a PC and looked up my Market Account. It listed both phones under devices and I could go all the way to installing it on both phones. It located my current phone.
Unfortunately, I blocked my SIM card prematurely(did not know about Plan B), so, I can't send out the locate SMS. But, I figure whoever has it has probably removed the SIM card, or does not know how to charge it if the battery is dead or is using a SIM on it without a data connection. So, no data connection means no app on the phone. I haven't received an email from Plan B for the lost phone.
Why is the phone is still linked to my market account? I can see that the carrier has been changed which means a new SIM.
For now I'm just satisfying myself by installing inane and useless apps on the phone. HAHA! I hope it works and the app installation is going through. I've pretty much lost hope of finding it.
I decided to try and change the rom on my lg optimus v for virgin mobile. I dl'd gapps-gb-20110325-signed.zip (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962862 )to my pc, and turned on usb mass storage. i went to f:/download/root and put the file in there. Then opened it in root manager clicked install from root sd card, and installed the rom.
now to the probelm
when it turned back on it looks nothing like the rom, just my default rom but without any apps but the super basic apps for the phone (no junkware either) and superuser. no marketplace or rom manager.
i tried going to settings/accounts & sync settings and adding my account. then it says add an exchange account. i put my gmail email in and then it goes to server settings for my email... its all allready filled out so i just hit next and then it says setup cannot finish, unable to open connection to server.
if someone could help me through this or at least try i would really appreaciate it, my phones bascially useless untill then.
Well, gmail is not an "Exchange Account"...
When you setup your accounts, use your Gmail account info with Gmail...
well, i dont know what account to put in.. and i dont know if i really screwed my phone up. what is an exchange account then? that gmail account is what i had everything linked to (contatcts etc)

Exchange is a Windows based corporate mail setver.
You dont need to setup an exchange account on your phone for it to work.
If you did a factory reset you should be prompted to enter your gmail info before anything else.

ya after it was all ****ed up, i tired to do a factory reset. and im now stuck in clockwork recovery mod. I tried to go to backup/recovery and install the backup i made before i tried to flash my os, let it do its thing, then after it installed, it went right back to clockwork. :[
you never realized how terrible it is to not have a phone untill it happens...
can anyone direct me to a next step i need to take?
Before posting this thread, I followed all of the suggested threads on the same topic. Keep coming back to the same thing.
How can I get back to default....(with root) like it was right out of the box. In short...if I sold this device, I can I be sure all my data is gone gone gone?
If I wipe wipe wipe and wipe. Then factory reset....certain settings are ALWAYS available....my wallpaper and my WiFi settings. No matter what, they always come back. That leads me to wonder if anything else is stored....
How can I be sure...?
Are you running a different Tom then stock? If so, wipe everything and then reload the stock Tom. Then use one click to unroot.

nope...not the answer. I've done that. My wallpaper and wifi, are immediately restored. Oh, and my bookmarks too. They are stored somewhere.
I've unmounted the phone memory and formated it. I've formated my SD card. I've loaded other ROMs to include the Nandroid backup that Gunman loaded. But, immediately upon logging in...My wallpaper is restored, move to Wifi and touch wifi, it detects and load my password protected settings, and my bookmarks are all there.
Somewhere these things are stored....Not being familiar with Android...I have no clue...
After you wipe your data and restart your phone, it shows the little green android, the one you have to press to setup your phone, right? After you press that android, during the initial setup are you entering your Google account info (username and password)? Android backs up certain info/settings, including wifi passwords, if you don't de-select that option and when you sign in to your Google account during that initial setup it will restore it automatically.
If that's the case just skip the initial setup and don't enter your account info and it shouldnt restore that info automatically.
I think some of that info is stored in your Google account. Dont log in with the initial setup, you'll see nothing is restored.

And that's what I thought. So I tried that 'other' phone, the one from HTC. No sim, force me to wifi on login. So I get to setup..the little green Andy Rubin dude, get the prompt for wifi, it forces me to select which AP, which is new. But, when I select the AP, it populates with my data and password. So I erased any thing I could erase, did factory reset to include erase storage, and repeated. Same thing happened. This should eliminate it being in the Google account because I've not entered that yet.
I've done this with both the g2x and the grass is greener phone. One is rooted, one is not. I was thinking something may be stored in recovery...I could buy that. Restoring to stock should fix that. But using the 'this is greatest' phone, it has a stock recovery.
Being a noob to the inner workings of android, and having believed the story about fake flash, I wanted to ask you guys. The only other explanation is, the 60's have caught up with me

Its all backed up on Google's servers. So during initial setup if you sign in with your Google username and password it restores the settings from their servers. Just skip the part of the setup where it asks you to sign in to a Google account.
How does it get my wifi settings, if I have to log to wifi, before Google.
I understand the login stuff, that's clear. But something is being retained, somewhere else too. Don't ya think that's scary?
I'm going to factory reset this device. Going to wipe phone memory, then boot to recovery, wipe all again, then install fauxs rom. I will skip the Google login. I will turn on wifi. If it logs.in from saved data, that means its on the device.

Its not scary. Its restoring settings you opted to have Google backup to their servers.
If I'm not mistaken during initial setup, the first piece of information you are asked to input is your Google account info. Once you enter that it restores your wifi settings, among other things. If you're connected to a mobile network (3G/4G/edge) it downloads it over that and then connects to your wifi network.

true...all that I understand. but...what if you skip teh login ?? Thats what I was getting at.
So, I took all of your information, and tried. Then, to be sure, I did it again. I was up until 2am, checking this out. What I learned was.....I have n o idea what I was thinking. I obviously mixed a few different steps from different activities. Some of the steps I mention above are not part of factory reset, but rather part rom flash...some arre parts of restore.
In conclusion,,, it wasn't android, but flaash backs from the 60's.

Yes it does. Its really rude of Google to make things so convenient. They should at the very least made it a little harder here. Imagine....logging in and getting all your saved settings, apps, etc, BY DEVICE. What were they thinking .....
My son has a Desire S which he has locked now after doing too many pattern attempts but we do not have the gmail account password (was setup purely for this phone and not used it since created) I have done a gmail recovery form but not holding my breath as account was never used so cant provide the "who emails you frequently" info etc...
Found a post on G1 forum about turning pattern lock off using ADB but he has turned off USB debugging
I know I can wipe the phone but he really dont want phone wiped as obv. will loose all his contacts and as its summer holidays wont be easy to get them back
If I flashed a rom (stock or otherwise) would it automatically wipe data? (normally only use clockwork to flash mine and know it gives option but clockwork not an option as cant get in phone) if it didnt wipe data do stock roms normally have debugging enabled? so I could then disable using ADB
or is there any other way? or will I have to bite bullet and wipe it
can't you boot into recovery using power and volume down, and aren't the contacts in sync with your gmail?
There are some methods on this link you can try
http://einartysen.se/unlock-android-phone-after-too-many-pattern-attempts/
Also how many times did you try?!! Usually it locks for a little while
It is running a stock rom unrooted so no recovery mode
Contacts are synced with gmail but no good as we cant access gmail account
Dont know how many times it was tried but lock seems permanent, has been stuck on that for hours now and even turning off/on dont clear it
oh and I have tried everything in that site already btw
lol this really bites, how old is your son? does he have a zillen and a half contacts? does he have an paid apps associated with gmail? if your answers are; under 10, no, and no. then it might just be easier to scrap and redo... :|
other then that your choices are to either remember the pin or the password to the gmail account
and did calling the phone but pressing the home button really not work? cause i really would like to know that one for future reference.
yeah you're only option now is to do a factory reset.

Did you not give gmail an alternative email in case of situations where you forgot your password? If you did then you can just request your password sent to that.
Once you get the gmail password it's just a case of factory reset, set up gmail account and gmail should have all contacts backed up.
If your son is on facebook, they have probably "stolen" all the contacts already and you can get them back from there.

that's a great idea, get your son to log into his face book and if he's used the face book application from his phone recently then his account will contain all of his contacts and their numbers

Hey
So a friend of mine lost his phone. He texted me asking for help on retrieving it.
I obviously thought of Plan B. But the problem is that he signed into the same Gmail account on two phones so plan b may not go to the right phone.
Will resetting the new phone allow plan b to go to the lost pphone?
Any ideas?
Plan B will probably work of you just remove the Google account from the second phone, rather than resetting it.

It gives you the option of which phone to install it to. The phone list is in chronological order. Send it to both if you have to. You will get 2 locations in your Gmail as long as your friends Gmail is still logged in. Obviously you'll know which one is the right one.
Thanks. I installed it remotely.
However Plan B still hasn't sent me a location.
Any ideas on imei tracking?

When I log in, it still gives me the option to install to all my previous phones. They are all listed and I know I logged out.
Maybe whoever found the found already wiped it. Since that Gmail is no longer associated with that phone, the install won't go through. It just gets lost in cyber space.
Once the lost phone is reset / wiped. Chances of locating it slim down. I hope someone turns it in for your friend. Good luck.
