[Q] correct procedure to flash Rom/Kernel/Radio - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi all,
I have an unlocked skyrocket and a tmo sim. I would love to use it with tmo 4G plan (as I'm currently using the stock radio it keeps connecting using EDGE protocol).
Reading this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507825
I found out that the best combination to obtain high speed rates is
Rom: Juggernaut 5.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1322642)
Kernel: Faux123 0010m (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437563)
Radio: VKL1 (http://minus.com/mlupRDTvJ#4 taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507825)
Can anyone tell me which is the correct procedure (sequence) to install a new rom, kernel and radio on this device? What about cache/dalvik cache wipes?
By looking in these threads http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=981502 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119145 I would assume that the correct sequence is:
Wipe data, wipe dalvik, flash ROM first, boot, reboot in recovery, flash kernel, boot, reboot in recovery, flash radio, boot. Is that correct?
Thank you!
p.s. I would really love if someone can double check these links for me (before I do anything wrong!). In particular my concern is about the ROM; the version I found is for the t989 (is it ok to use on the i727?)

Refer to this post to get the rom compatible with the skyrocket. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337311 As for the procedure you want to A.Factory reset which clears everything or use the super script B.Flash ROM C.Follow the specific directions for that rom.

I see. May I ask you what is the "super script"? I tried to look for it but I don't think I could find anything relevant. Thank you

Probably referring to the Darkside Superwipe, found here -

What he meant to say was the dark side super wipe script, search the forums for that. Its for the samsung t989 aka hercules but it works on our phones as well

great, thanks to both of you!
I will try to look for differences between flashing this and doing a wipe data/dalvik cache soon

flash radio, then rom, then kernel

wipe data, cache, and dalvik (or use darkside's wipe script), flash radio (in your case, you want a tmobile radio), then rom (which usually contains a kernel), then kernel (of your device, skyrocket).. keep in mind these aren't generic instructions, but they work on the skyrocket and t989 because they can share roms.
i am unsure of when is a good time to boot up and let the rom do its thing, but i MAY have read at some point it is a good idea to boot after you flash the rom (before the kernel) so that it can do some background processes, then flash the proper kernel. i do not know the reasoning for this nor do i really see the point in this. i would just wipe, flash, then boot and wait, then reboot.
see here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535043

hey! I was looking for an answer on what to do also... this helps... Do I need to unlock it with a paid program and then do this... or well this provide an unlock?

GPS Problem

Hello,
I have a rooted htc magic with radio 6.35/ spl 1,76
My phone's GPS was working perfectly with official senseUI rom (android 1.5)
Yesterday I installed serpei's 2.1 android and then I wiped out the data and install marsdroid (android 1.6).
Then I return back to the official (1.5) as it feels more stable but GPS stopped functioning correctly. I also try to hard reset and rebooting the device with GPS on but again no luck.
Please help!
Did u wipe everything? Because if u didn't wipe ext and dalvick there may be your problem. Or get the new 2.21.... radio if you know what your doing. Last resort though

How can I wipe ext and dalvick?
When You back from 2.1 to 1.5/1.6 You must reflash radio/spl to have functioning gps

Yes... and then flash rom which You want
here is a hint. I'm sure you flashed the wrong radio ;p if you dont flash a radio compatible with your country phone edition it wont work at all and will remain off.
Try confirm wich Radio version is compatible with your HTC. Whats your phone edition/model and where was it made?
You not only have the wrong radio... But if you dont have all 6 options to wipe, you are running a very outdated recovery.
Check top stikies of this forum to flash the new 1.6.2
So I have radio 6.35.10.18 and spl 1.76.2007 (eng)
It's a 32A phone

Without having any intentrion of personal confrontation you people should actually read, what someone writes before hypothetizing or saying you' re sure about this or that. The problem with this kind of behaviour is that you'll propose solutions without actually knowing the facts. This may lead to troubles for the owner.
He had the official HTC ROM (everything worked fine) and then he flashed 2 custom ROMs (Sanpei's and Marsdroid's) without changing radio or SPL. So you would expect that when flashing the original ROM, everything would work fine.
You don't have to wipe all 6 options. What is the point of wiping the external partition, if you don't have one. FYI he has the latest 1.6.2 Hero recovery ROM (it's the Hero one because he has the new radio 6.35.xx.xx).

Hello I'll try explain why i say the radio. Each rom has compabilities issues to certain radio. For example, the radio 6.35.10.xx is compatible for canada ROM therefor GPS will work, but if he uses a 6.35.08.xx GPS wont work. But if he uses a ROM based on European ROM it'll work.
I Passed throw this i know what i'm talking about. Unless he has a malfunction onthe phone, he has for sure the wrong ROM. Doesnt matter if before worked on another ROM. Matters where that ROM edition is from (Base rom), that is important for the ROM Funcionalities, the radio edition of that rom zone will be resposible for GPS+PHone functionalities over GSM CDMA HSDPA ... etc
I understand he might not have changed ROM, but he should try change radio since as rule, the radio he is using wont work on European ROM. (Its a fact i've "tested" =P)
About wiping theory, the only wiping you have to do is to Dalvik Cache; SD ext* (only if you have); Factory Reset. (The rest are options you dont need to do that, but if you want to feel safer about it, enter in fastboot mode, and writte fastboot erase system –w (it'll delete everything , user.img system.img userdata.img but this isnt necessary, wipping those 2 is more than enought) and then you can install your rom.
Hope i have helped best regards
Hi,
I have already try "fastboot erase system –w" but again no luck.
How can I wipe the Dalvik Cache?
With radio 6.35.10.18 and spl 1.76.2007 the official senseUI (1.5) was working fine. The problem occur after the downgrade back to 1.5.
that option is only to delete the system but,
i'll try explain wich steps you should have to help you fix, please tell me what is the oficial sense ui version you are using?

I will also try this
alright friend, you've got same edition as i do. YEsterday i had this issue about the radio you only have to flash the radio to the edition i told you. Follow this steps for ROM instalation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=621890
Install the radio wich comes on the zip. You'll see everything will be fine
Post results after you are done remember is the other radio ;P regards
So first I can try to wipe out the Dalvik Cache and run the fastboot erase command.
If this won't solve the problem I will continue with the other solution.

[Q] how to update a rom?

i looked through the forum and didn't find this exact question so i'm sorry if it's been posted before.
basically what i'm wondering is if i have a ROM installed, let's just say one of the new ICS ones, and a new release of that ROM comes out, is there a way to upgrade to the newer version without having to install all my apps and stuff again through titanium backup? i hope that makes sense. in other words, is installing a new version of a ROM that you are already using going to be the same process as flashing a new ROM entirely? that could get annoying with newer versions of ICS seemingly coming out twice a week.
thanks in advance!
It's recommended to wipe and reflash, but I just flash over top and if there's problems I resort to wiping. Clear cache and dalvik and just flash over top, your apps will still be there. But if you do it this way, you should not report any problems
Sent from my Inspire 4G using Xparent Blue Tapatalk
Probably could have used search to find this. But typically, unless the dev say to full wipe, when an update comes out for the rom you are using you can flash the update over the older version without a full wipe. You are still required to clear cache/dalvik to do this. If anything that was working before does not work anymore after you have flashed the update over the older version, then you should go back and do a full wipe and flash the new version. I personally always full wipe when flashing a newer version.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
It all depends on the ROM and what is updated. Seriously you have to go by what the DEV says in his thread. Some you can update without wiping and some you have to wipe. Others will automatically wipe for you. Best advice is to read the DEV's thread. They should all give you this info. And if you looked over the first few posts of his thread you really wouldn't be asking this question here.
Some mods have the cache/dalvik wipe built in, so just make sure you read through the thread for whatever mod you're trying. Wiping it twice won't hurt, but just wastes a little time.

really? man. I'll make this very simple for you.
1. put rom on root of sdcard
2. boot into recovery
3. wipe data, cache, dalvik cache
4. install from sdcard the zip file
5. reboot.
almost all ROMs except for the PD98IMG.zip stock ROMs are flashed with the above method. Not all ROMs require a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik cahce) when upgrading within the same ROM but it is recommended to do so to avoid any issues. If you're switching between different ROMs, it is required to do a full wipe. Search my good man.

Switching from one ROM to another

I'm currently using SkyRocket ICS (2.3.5 Gingerbread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377087
and everything is awesome but my phone signal, att logo, wifi, notifications, doesnt appear on the top of the phone so i want to try out another ROM. This one in particular, NexusMod 4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426590
Do I just flash the new ROM in CWM recovery like I did to get my first ROM? Or is there more to it?
Thanks!
That's a problem on your end, that rom is flawless and you flashed it wrong
This is the guide I used to flash the ROM

I compared it with ones on xda and it was identical but more noob friendly which I preferred. I dont know what I couldve possibly done wrong.. I followed EVERYTHING step by step. I love everything about this ROM except this one major annoyance.

It was a bad flash or bad download. Try to redownload and check the md5, then simply reflash it making sure to follow instructions and wipe properly
Sorry, but may I ask what an md5 is? And the specific ROM I want
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377087
doesn't provide instructions, at least that I know of so I followed this guide
http://www.traemcneely.com/2011/12/27/install-custom-rom-at-ciq-removed-short-review-instructions/
Only problem I can think of that I made was flashing the RC 6.75 Stock ROM and then wiping cache partition and flashing the 7.4 Stock Nonewipeupdate right afterwards which is exactly what the guide asked for. Was I suppose to reboot after flashing the stock RC 6.75 ROM before flashing the 7.4 Stock Nonewipeupdate?

You need to flash the base and boot it before flashing an update, like you said.
Before flashing any rom this is a general procedure
wipe data/factory reset 3x
Wipe cache 3x
wipe dalvik cache 3x
format system 3x
flash radio if need be
flash rom
reboot
dont touch phone for at least 10 mins
set up basics
if it has an update
reboot to cwm
wipe cache 3x
wipe dalvik cache 3x
flash update
reboot
Okk. ONE LAST question. The SkyRocket ICS (2.3.5 Gingerbread) ROM I'm using doesn't have or provide a radio file to DL on the page which I linked earlier. Does that imply that this particular ROM doesn't need it? Or am I suppose to find a radio to flash before flashing the ROM and update?

In about phone, what does it say for baseband? Kj2 is the 2.3.5 stock radio

If the radio you're using is working and you're flashing from gb to gb, you shouldn't have to worry about the radio. You'll still have the same one. Radios flash separately from roms. I don't think you'll NEED to flash a new radio unless you change to an ICS rom.

Android version 2.3.6
Baseband version I727UCKJ2
Kernal version 2.6.35.11+
Build number Sky-ICS RC7.4 Stock
When I purchased my phone and after I rooted it, I was v2.3.5 but after I flashed my first ROM (which is my current ROM) the android version changed to v2.3.6. So if KJ2 is the stock radio for v2.3.5 is there a possibility my problem of not having the att logo and wifi signal on the top of my phone due to not having the correct radio for this ROM? or for v2.3.6 in general? Or is it from what you said earlier, my flashing process was wrong? Or a mixture or not having the correct radio and flashing wrong?

Well, I don't really know whether or not the radio is working. I suppose in my case it is working since I am able to recieve and make calls, text, and go on the web. However, I am unable to see the att logo, wifi/cell signal on the top of my phone. I don't know if this problem has anything to do with the radio though. Sorry for my lack of understanding..
I'm assuming the problem is more my fault in terms of not flashing correctly. I have no idea whether or not I need a separate radio for this ROM.
Sounds like a systemui /frame work problem
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
Reflash
Fully boot
Shutdown
Flash update
Wipe dalvik
Reboot.
The signals at the top wouldn't be affected by he radio. You would most likely get them back if you reflashed your from or flashed another. As long as it's a 2.3.5 or 2.3.6. And also follow the instructions (usually pretty standard, wipe data factory reset a few times, wipe cache partition, advanced, wipe dalvik cache a few times, go back, mounts and storage, format system a few times. Then install zip from SD card) oh and always backup first and make sure you can restore the backup. But yeah if you can make calls and use internet, your radio should be OK.

Not sure the deal with your cell/wifi signals not showing in your status bar, but, the carrier logo could have been removed in the ROM itself.
I would try out the nexusmod zero ics I'm running it now and I like it a lot more than nexus 4. Also when I went from the from you are on now I had to do a super wipe before I could get the ics rom to work without bootloop

Is it OK to Falsh CM9 on top of Stock I727UCLF6_I727ATTLF6_ATT

Hello all,
I have Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and i am currently on I727UCLF6 stock firmware I727UCLF6_I727ATTLF6_ATT, my question
Is it OK to Falsh CM9 on top of Stock I727UCLF6_I727ATTLF6_ATT?
If yes should i flash the nightly cm-9-20120721-NIGHTLY-skyrocket.zip or cm-9.0.0-RC2-skyrocket.zip is better?
Thank you
Have you done any of that reading we suggested you do? Flashing CM9 on top of stock without wiping the cache and Dalvik and doing a factory wipe will turn your phone into a brick, which you seem to be intent on doing. Seriously, if you have to ask a question like, "Can I flash a new ROM on top of my existing stock?", you're not ready to flash ROMs.
Read, learn and understand before doing, or you will brick, and you will find little sympathy here.

After the nightmare i had before when i lost my signal, MAN i did a lot of reading!!!1
I have successfully flashed my phone to cm-9.0.0-RC2-skyrocket.zip but before that i did some wiping as the following:
1- Wipe data/factory reset (Three times)
2- Wipe cache partition (Three times)
3- from mount & storage, format system (Three times)
4-Wipe Dalvik cache (Three times)
All the wiping really isn't necessary. Flash the rom, then modems if needed, then one factory reset and reboot. That's it.

Probably the UVLE1 modems from the T989 ics release.
or you could just follow the instructions the dev almost always posts along with the rom...
anyway, if the dev does not post instructions for some reason then just default to:
1) make a nandroid
2) wipe data/factory reset
3) wipe cache
4) wipe dalvik cache
5) flash rom and gapps if necessary
6) reboot
you obviously still do not understand what it means to flash roms, so until you do, just follow the directions EXACTLY as the dev posts them.
also, i would not recommend flashing a new rom before wiping then wiping afterward, sounds like a pretty dirty install

[Q] Question about updating ROMs

Hello,
I recently installed custom Jellywiz rom on my Verizon S3.
My question is if I have new custom rom versions or if I want to switch to a different rom, do I always have to go back to stock firmware and then install the custom rom or can I directly flash over my existing custom rom ?

New custom rom versions: Unless otherwise stated by the developer you can go ahead and just dirty flash right on top of the current one, but if you experience issues then i'd wipe data and cache and do a clean install.
Switching to a different rom: ALWAYS do a clean install (wipe data, and cache), i can't urge how important that is, while you may not have any issues whatsoever, you definitely could encounter issues because each developer may have different changes, and you don't want stuff to mix and match.

Thanks. So just flashing over existing rom after wiping data and cache will work. Will do that. I do not want to go back to stock rom always as that is time consuming.

Yeah this is fine. The way I've always done it. Also in clockwork, go to advanced >wipe dalvic

You can flash stock roms in CWM, but be careful if they don't include a kernel. If you go from AOSP to Stock, you might get a boot loop unless you also flash a stock compatible kernel, and vice versa. Boot loop is easily recoverable of course, but it will scare new users
