What is the best way to access the root directory on the HTC One S from my PC? I try using Android Commander but it locks up.
Thanks!
There are clearly defined guides on rooting your One S, unlocking the bootloader, flashing recoveries, and more, all posted in the Development forum. Please try following one of them.
At this time, there is no super-quick 1-click tool for unlock and root.
However, there is the All-In-One Toolkit...

Hey everyone, im having a problem with visionary. I am following unlockrs guide to perm root my mytouch 4g well i have done that but when i reboot the phone it doesnt say s-off is says s-on, I did everything like he said idk what could be wrong ccan someone help me with this. I new at this.
Thanks in advance.
Go into the HTC Glacier (MT4G) forum then into the android development section. The very first post at the top is a guide to rooting using the gfree method. I have rooted 4 MT4G's with this thread, including one about 12 hours ago. At the end of the thread, it gives you instructions on how to flash the engineering bootloader. This is HIGHLY recommended as it makes it easier to recover from a soft brick. To flash using this method you need to use adb. There is a 5 minute video (link is in the thread) that will give you enough knowledge to be able to do this. The first time I ever rooted a phone or used adb was with this phone using this thread, and I was fine.

There ya go..made it even easier.
I was looking at getting the galaxy 3 but since it looks like another week I think I'm going to get the x one but my question is how hard is it to root and be able to install custom roms as I remember old htc phones being a lot of trouble?thanks
We have one click root and recovery installs for either shipping firmware version. After rooting we also have one click bootloader unlock.

The devs have dealt with nearly all of our troubles already. As gunnyman said, we pretty much have one-clicks for everything then it's just normal flashing from there.
Everything you need is compiled here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
In particular, the guides at the bottom of Post 1 of the Index thread will run you step by step through the process.
But to answer your question, I wouldn't consider it "hard", but that's completely subjective. But there are several steps you will need to go through. Namely:
1) Obtain root (as mentioned above, this is one-click and easy)
2) Change to SuperCID (again, one-click)
3) Register at HTCDev.com, and obtain an unlock token
4) Unlock the bootloader using the token (not hard, just follow instructions on given by the HTCDev.com website, and the XDA tutorials mentioned above).
5) Install recovery. CWM can be installed one-click. But TWRP recovery is good, too, and easy to install.
Then you are ready to install custom ROMs.
thanks alot looks easier than it used to be with htc phones so im going to get my htc one x tonight and see what happens.
Suppose it depends on what HTC device you are coming from. Every generation of HTC device is a bit different (since HTC keeps changing up its security). Revolutionary S-Off and root was real easy for user to implement (not one-click, but pretty damn close). Gfree was pretty complicated (at least a lot of ADB commands to type). But overall, I'd say the One X is not hard. Just multiple steps to go through, most of which are easy. And if you've used ADB and fastboot in the past, its a breeze.
Also, be sure to hit the "thanks" button if my post helped you.
I have looked at a number of tools to root a mytouch slide and can't seem to find one that has straight forward instructions. In addition, I'm not sure where to download ROM or if I even need to. I'm just trying to get root access so I can remove some pre-installed apps and run some apps that need root access. I know a lot about computers and have worked as a network analyst but mobile phones seems to be a whole different world. If anyone knows of a safe kit with step-by-step instructions, i would greatly appreciate you helping me out.
Thanks in advance!

I have used this toolkit to unlock a few bootloaders and flash recoveries. If you are on the HBOOT 1.45.0013 and use this you will still be S-ON locked. You can flash roms but with the extra step of flashing the boot.img you extract from the ROM, through this toolkit. if you are on the earlier HBOOT look into REVOLUTIONARY unlocking your bootloader for an easy S-OFF unlock...
or if you're on HBOOT 1.45.0013 feel like having some fun look into juopunutbear's wire trick S-OFF method.
The first step is unlocking your bootloader to flash a recovery to use to flash ROMs, after that it gets simple.
What a joke... I've never seen such confusing ways to root a phone.
I tried 3 or 4 different ways, they all get hung up at one step or another.
You would think someone on this site could come up with a step by step way, WITH CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS on how do it!!!
And god help if your a mac user, you are the scum of the earth.

Agreed, I wanted to go S-OFF to avoid the extra step. I was a little leery on the wire trick, but after I read thru it a few times, I felt confident it would be hard to screw up. The hardest part was the timing.
I followed the instructions EXACTLY as posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801106
Have now followed this successfully to unlock 2 separate fully stock MT4GS's. Try not to be a **** around here and you'll go far and get lots of help. If you're following either of those processes and get stuck on a step stop and ask for help and I'm sure you'll get helpful useful responses, but don't act like everyone here is out to get you, it's far from that. And don't expect someone to hold your hand thru every step of the way either, we're all adults (I think) lets try to act like it.
root only
hello. i DONT NEED all that other stuff! I JUST WANT SIMPLE ROOT! IM NOT DOING ANY CUSTOMS ROMS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT! HOW IS THIS ACHIEVED?
P.S. i read about 10 pages and still all i heard was the other stuff. (custom roms this customs that.)

Just go to the development forum, look at the pinned thread at the top "how to root MT4GS with any hboot" then do what it says in the very first post. It's clear, and worked for me.

Ok i struggle with rooting devices if there wasn't a easy mode tool my kindle Fire first gen wouldn't be rooted. Only way i found on the forums to root a AT&T HTC One X with 318 firmware OS 4.1.1, Linux was needed. I'm not looking to put another rom on it if i lose HDMI output reason being i want to root is to use ARunchained so my phone works with my app radio 3 atm its a unsupported device and the pioneer app doesn't work with my phone only mirrors to the radio leaving me to hold my phone as i drive to control stuff (i have ibolt dock but the radio doesn't see it when on the dock). Anyway is there a windows route of rooting my device and a tutorial?

The last of the 3 worked (thank you ) but now i still need to root, these tools/methods were supposed to root but far as i got was bootloader unlocked and even says that on fastboot screen tampered/unlocked.
Is there any simple root method i can do? my clockwerk recovery won't run says i need root access so i know its not rooted even superuser app says binaries are out of date but errors out on updating in either recovery mode or plain install. Any advice?

If you have TWRP/CWM Then just flash superSU 1.65.zip but the tools should give root. (You probably need to flash a Rooted ROM)

it said it laid the TWRP/CWM and su zips on the device and sends reboot command but instead of going in to recovery or fastboot mode it bricks to where i have to disconnect the usb cable and hold the power button for a minute before it boots back up. so i can't get into clockwerk to flash anything

Because these forums are sloppy to navigate and too many threads every thing is buried, makes things hard to find.
See screenshot, how is that sloppy to navigate? The sub-forums within our device forum are clearly titled.

Agreed. Come on man, how is this forum hard to navigate? Of the clearly labelled forum sections, you thought "Themes and Apps" would be the appropriate place? Really???
Its clear you need to research and learn a lot more before you should do any more fiddling with your device. Asking for a "simple method" such as a toolkit or one-click is no replacement for proper learning and understanding. Such methods can get you in a lot of trouble; as they enable you enough to do major damage, but don't give you the skills or knowledge to fix it.
Most resources needed for this phone can be found here (Sticky at top of General, and linked in the rollup at top of Development): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237

Okay, first off, I am new to all of this unlocking and rooting business.
I have a HTC One M8S (emphasis on the S !!) and I am trying to get it rooted.
So far, I have managed to unlock the phone but simply cannot root it and I have now looked at and tried many methods. I feel reasonably sure that I have NOT been able to flash recovery software successfully although I have been told that efforts were a success and for some reason, my phone remains s-on and I am unable to change it to s-off ( I'm not certain of the importance but it seems necessary ). SDK and adb stuff has all been installed.
Every video I see is for the M8 (note - NOT the S version) and videos are always at least a year old. Is there anyone who can provide up to date instructions and help on how I can root this phone ? So far, it seems impossible to do.
Once again, I will emphasise that this is the S version of the phone and does not have the option to turn the Fastboot option on or off in the power section.
Many thanks.
