[Q] Rooting myouch 4g problem - General Questions and Answers

Hey everyone, im having a problem with visionary. I am following unlockrs guide to perm root my mytouch 4g well i have done that but when i reboot the phone it doesnt say s-off is says s-on, I did everything like he said idk what could be wrong ccan someone help me with this. I new at this.
Thanks in advance.

Go into the HTC Glacier (MT4G) forum then into the android development section. The very first post at the top is a guide to rooting using the gfree method. I have rooted 4 MT4G's with this thread, including one about 12 hours ago. At the end of the thread, it gives you instructions on how to flash the engineering bootloader. This is HIGHLY recommended as it makes it easier to recover from a soft brick. To flash using this method you need to use adb. There is a 5 minute video (link is in the thread) that will give you enough knowledge to be able to do this. The first time I ever rooted a phone or used adb was with this phone using this thread, and I was fine.

[Q] Rooting Sprint's Nexus S 4G

Hi, I just registered on this forum hoping to learn the ins and outs of rooting. Been doing a lil research reading a couple of sites on the topic. Bear with me, but I feel like a complete noob cause a lot of the language is sailing straight over my head. I think I have the gist of it, but it seems a lot of the information are scattered and there's a lot of different ways to root.
I just recently got the Nexus S (Sprint's 4G version) and I have been reading some of the ROMs aren't compatible with the 4G version yet. This has me a little worried...would rooting the phone be any different since its a 4G model? I really don't want to brick my phone on my first try. Is there a comprehensive guide with easy step by step instructions on how to root this particular version of the phone?
I do agree the 4G version needs its own tab to prevent confusion since a lot of the guides here are for the regular Nexus S. Many thanks in advance.
If you look in the developers section there is a sticky at the top for the Sprint variant of the Nexus S. In it there are rooting instructions and such.

It's actually quite hard to brick the Nexus devices. The gist of it is as follows:
Boot into fastboot (hold pwr up and turn the phone one).
Fastboot oem unlock to unlock the device (this wipes)
Install a custom recovery via fastboot (fastboot flash recovery downloaded-image.img)
flash the su binary package via recovery
This is the same process for all variants of the phone - there's nothing 4G specific about it other than don't try to use an old version of CWM (the i9023 can't either).
Guides are here for the 4G though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071500
The only way you are going to brick your device is:
- Flashing a GSM radio to your CDMA device
- Pulling the battery DURING a radio flash
- Using ODIN and flashing a full rom package not meant for your device.

I've actually seen people unbrick after flashing the wrong radio... LOL pretty amazing.
I could really use some help please. Im using these guides to root and I've gotten the bootloader unlocked, but when I get to the part where I flash CWM recovery in the command prompt, I get a message that says:
cannot load recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-crespo
That is the file they said to download, and I inserted it into the tools section of android sdk folder. Any ideas? The unlock bootloader command worked perfectly, but Im getting stuck at this step.
EDIT: I figured out my problem. I wasn't placing the recovery file in the Platform-tools folder, I was putting it into the regular tools folder. I have my moments.

I finally got it. Worked like a charm once I figured out what I was doing wrong. Do we still have to rename the file (install-recovery.sh and rename to install-recovery.sh.bak) in root explore to make it stick? I have rebooted several times and it is still there so I was just wondering.
These are pretty great instructions, especially the link. Since Sprint shipped with version 2.3.4 of Android with the build GRJ22, do the rooting instructions still work for our model?

Got no idea. I was referring to renaming the clockwork image file. But I think you answered your own question since root has um... rooted. Cheers.

I rooted mine just fine. You should be good.
Which method did you use? I'm reading a lot about bootloader being unlocked/locked and some methods requiring a backup and some without. This really adds to the confusion. Then there's a Superboot method which seems a lot easier but it doesn't seem to have the GRJ22 model. I'm pretty sure its easy once I get to it, but the overwhelming information makes it extremely difficult to follow lol. Information overload.

[Q] Rooting + ROM Questions!

Ok, so I'd say I'm a newbie with this rooting and ROM installing stuff, I've never rooted before.
I just got an HTC sensation 2 weeks ago, and my friend has a rooted Samsung Vibrant with a ROM on it, I forget what it's called. But she said now her phone can get apps only rooted phones can get, like one that makes your phone go faster or slower called ummmm, SetCpu. She said there are probably cool ROMs for my Sensation so I really want to root and get a ROM! So I has questions for youzzz
1. How do I get my phone rooted?
2. On a scale of 1-10, how hard will it be for me to root it having no experience.
3. How do I get a ROM.
4. What is a super cool recommended ROM?
Thanks everyone who helps me ahead of time
I thought they taught computer hacking in grade school now....if a 30ish guy like me can learn this kids should be 2nd nature.

Follow the steps in here to S-OFF and root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
IMO, rooting is really easy. Just follow the steps closely so you don't mess it up and brick your phone .
You can find the ROMs at the development section. I'm using Leedroid and Faux123 Kernel and find that its really smooth and you don't really need to use overclocking apps all the time. Sometimes its not recommended and it may cause problems with the kernel. Hope i helped you to get started!

2. If you follow all the steps correctly it's completly noob proof, so 1 on the scale
3. You get them from Threads in the Development Section
4. I'm using Android Revolution HD & It's been working perfectly for me. Here's a link to it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849
do'nt forget to read the directoins in that site, i didn't at first and was getting frustrated because there is a link to drives that u need to install in the read directoins site and i didn't know and i was literraly going insane because it couldn't read my phone lol
I am coming from a rooted vibrant but having trouble with rooting my sensation.
In using "How To get your Hboot Version - 3 methods below" I do not get "Found your Device: HTC Sensation Z710* Applications -> Development.
It appears that my PC is not recognizing my phone. I have loaded revolutionary.io on my computer. I have extracted the files to a folder. When I run the revolutionary utility, I get a quick flash of a black screen (prompt screen) and then goes back to my revolutionary file folder.
I know I must be overlooking some part of the - How to get your Boot Version.
Nvmd: I was finally able to get the S-Off. I continued to try the same thing over and over (about 9-10 times) and I finally added some portion of the puzzle that I had been overlooking. Nice feeling of accomplishment.

Rooting

I bought a DS a few days ago and found a few apps require rooting, I am running a complete stock rom (whatever that means) 2.3.3 and I have tried using SuperOneClick, but have always been stuck at Waiting For Device... as the program just freezes, can anyone help!!
if you need temporary root try Gingerbreak (link here). It have to give you root until rebooting
I want a permanent root, as I am re booting my ds nearon everyday, so the temp root is hopeless for me. Can anyone else help?

Ok. It was not making sense otherwise...
Remember - once you decide to change your original software you are continuing on your own risk. All the procedures are done multiple times and verified by the community here, but there is always a chance to screw thing up. Going to this for a few apps that require rooting - your call
For permanent root you have to "unlock" your phone for custom software first. This can be done with the Revolutionary tool and will void your warranty (but is the only way to gain permanent root). You can veryify this on the SuperOneClick thread - look for Nandroid lock.
Then you have the following options:
if you want to keep your current ROM use SuperOneClick. This will give you full root and keep your apps and data intact
replace your "completely stock rom" with some of these or this one. Which one to pick is up to you. (the ROMs in the first thread are with Sense 2.1, the other is the latest Stock with Sense 3.0) They will give you permanent root and "completely stock ROM" experience
flash any custom rom (you can pick from here). This will give you permanent root as well and custom goodies
Happy flashing
One extra thing to mention is if you decide to permanent root your ds is definately get Rom manager and I would even spend a lil bit of money for the premium. It's perfect for making those essential backups of your Rom just incase something goes wrong with flashing a new rom or keyboard. Have fun.

[Q] desperatle wanting to root my htc raider from rogers

so i've read so many forums, done everything i can, every method, but to no avail; im still not able to root my htc raider. the most recent forum i came across, which supposedly the simplest and easiest method to root my phone, is this " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003 " i thought the video was supposedly a step by step tutorial, but not as much as i expected it to be. because of my previous attempt before using this toolkit, i was only able to unlock the bootloader, so i skiped the part were u have to do it. i went straight to flashing the cwm and was successful. with that, i was able to use backup/restore. then i went to permroot and all i got from the command promt was adb stuff out of date. i thought maybe i have to flash my kernel so i did. but then i got stock on the htc logo. can anyone plz help me
anyone... Im really desperate here
I could seriously use some help....

[Q] Rooting an HTC mytouch 4g slide

I have looked at a number of tools to root a mytouch slide and can't seem to find one that has straight forward instructions. In addition, I'm not sure where to download ROM or if I even need to. I'm just trying to get root access so I can remove some pre-installed apps and run some apps that need root access. I know a lot about computers and have worked as a network analyst but mobile phones seems to be a whole different world. If anyone knows of a safe kit with step-by-step instructions, i would greatly appreciate you helping me out.
Thanks in advance!

I have used this toolkit to unlock a few bootloaders and flash recoveries. If you are on the HBOOT 1.45.0013 and use this you will still be S-ON locked. You can flash roms but with the extra step of flashing the boot.img you extract from the ROM, through this toolkit. if you are on the earlier HBOOT look into REVOLUTIONARY unlocking your bootloader for an easy S-OFF unlock...
or if you're on HBOOT 1.45.0013 feel like having some fun look into juopunutbear's wire trick S-OFF method.
The first step is unlocking your bootloader to flash a recovery to use to flash ROMs, after that it gets simple.
What a joke... I've never seen such confusing ways to root a phone.
I tried 3 or 4 different ways, they all get hung up at one step or another.
You would think someone on this site could come up with a step by step way, WITH CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS on how do it!!!
And god help if your a mac user, you are the scum of the earth.

Agreed, I wanted to go S-OFF to avoid the extra step. I was a little leery on the wire trick, but after I read thru it a few times, I felt confident it would be hard to screw up. The hardest part was the timing.
I followed the instructions EXACTLY as posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801106
Have now followed this successfully to unlock 2 separate fully stock MT4GS's. Try not to be a **** around here and you'll go far and get lots of help. If you're following either of those processes and get stuck on a step stop and ask for help and I'm sure you'll get helpful useful responses, but don't act like everyone here is out to get you, it's far from that. And don't expect someone to hold your hand thru every step of the way either, we're all adults (I think) lets try to act like it.
root only
hello. i DONT NEED all that other stuff! I JUST WANT SIMPLE ROOT! IM NOT DOING ANY CUSTOMS ROMS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT! HOW IS THIS ACHIEVED?
P.S. i read about 10 pages and still all i heard was the other stuff. (custom roms this customs that.)
