[Q] ICS no option for Encryption on SD Card? - General Questions and Answers

Hello all,
I have Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V.
So I upgraded the phone to ICS 4.0.3 and it seems I cannot find an option to encrypt phone under settings > security.
What I have found is this:
If i connect to pc through usb I need to enter my screen password in order to be able to read the SD Card.
BUT, when I remove the sd card and enter it to an external card reader ALL data are available.
Is there no option to fully encrypt the SD Card in ICS?
What the heck?

in fact, even the google stock ics doesn't support external Sd card encrryption too.
the reason why you must input the screenlock password to make Sd card visible when you connect your phone to pc is that you are using MTP connection mode, the mode will hide the storage units unless you unlock the screen. that's to say, if you change the connectivity mode(Settings->Xperia->Connectivity) to MSC, Sd card will be visible even you don't unlock the screen.
P.S.
#in MSC mode, only Sd card can be found, since internal storage doesn't support the MSC mode.
#you must unplug the usb cable or you can't change connectivity mode

Thank you for your answer!
So far you were the only one who gave me an insight on what's happening.
And thank you for letting me know that the sd is not encrypted but "invisible".

The simplest suggestion would be to remove the SD card from the phone and use a card reader to place a new ROM on it.
If this doesn't work for some reason, you can connect to your computer via Wifi and use ADB to push a new ROM onto the SD card. However, if your phone won't mount the SD card when you plug in the USB cable there is probably something wrong with the way it is communicating with the SD card.
An external card reader is your best bet.
Just to double check - can you access your SD card when you boot the phone in recovery mode?

Samsung i7500 - internal memory error

Hello,
I've got a big problem with my Galaxy. Yesterday I resetted phone to factory settings (wipe) and after that I formatted internal SD card from i7500's menu. Everything seemed to be OK, so I connected my phone to Windows (I wanted to transfer music). Transfer seemed to be succesful, so I plugged off the phone.
Phone was checking something with memory very long, so I rebooted it.
After that I can't get access to internal and external sd cards, they are unavailable in the phone's menu. I can't play music - there's a warning: "An error was encountered on your SD card". I can't also use options "mount" or "unmount" in phone's menu. Total space and other options in the same manu are unavailable.
When I connect i7500 with my computer, Windows recognizes it, but I have to insert disk when I try to access internal and external SD card... There's no "select to copy files..." notification on phone screen... I don't know why.
I also tried to connect with "mass storage only" box checked with no results.
USB debugging mode wasn't succesful too, because Windows asks me for drivers (standard i7500 x64 drivers don't work, I'm running Vista).
My Android version is 1.6, previous owner changed software...
What can I do to solve my problem?
Sorry for my bad English.

Jacek

[SOLVED] Phone's SD card not showing up in My Computer

Hi,
I just bought the Desire S and it comes with an 8GB SD card. When I plug my phone into the computer to browse the SD card, the SD card doesn't show up in My Computer. I've tried USB storage ON and OFF, debugging Mode and nothing works.
When I go to Computer Management -> Disk Management, the SD card shows up as "Unallocated". I cannot assign a drive letter to it as well.
I took the SD card out of the phone and plugged it into the computer using a card reader and it showed up in My Computer and was working fine. I put it back into the phone and plugged the phone to the computer and selected SD card storage option on the phone and I can't browse the SD card any more.
I've already formatted the card as FAT32 using Windows 7 before putting it into the phone.
I can browse the SD card just fine using a file explorer on the phone.
What could be the problem? why isn't the SD card showing up when I plug the phone into the computer?
I'm running MIUI 1.9.30 ROM, but the problem was also present with the original HTC ROM as well.
maybe you should try to format it through phone's settings, even better if you try to use a sense rom
Do you have htc usb drivers on your pc? Not sure if this they are required to browse the sdcard whilst in the phone, but they maybe?
The best you can do, you must format your SD card (all partitions) with your recovery (Ext3 or Ext4).
If you have used 4EXTRecovery or CWM, it's easier. (I prefer 4EXTRecovery )
At the end I think it will be ok

I downloaded the "HTC Sync" tool and installed it but it doesn't recognize the phone probably because MIUI is installed on the phone.
Does anyone else have MIUI installed and managed to get it to work? Or is there some USB drivers I need to install?

But Windows doesn't recognize Ext3 or Ext4, so I still won't be able to browse my SD card on the computer.

Indeed, except if you use Droid Explorer on your PC (you can read all partitions from your phone with).
Except your SD partition who's must be in Fat32, all the parttions must be in Ext3 or Ext4.
That's why I'm write that's you can format your Sd card with your recovery.
For exemple, mine is:
System => ext4 => capacity :549 MB => free: 101MB
data => ext4 => capacity :1156 MB => free: 427MB
cache => ext4 => capacity :142 MB => free: 138MB
sd ext => ext4 => capacity :0 MB MB => free: 0 MB
sdcard => fat32 => capacity :29543 MB => free: 15369MB
In my pc, the only partition that I can read is sdcard
I tried Droid Explorer but it is buggy, incomplete, very slow, and overall crap.
I tried RCMix3D 1.5 ROM with Sense 3.5 and Android 2.3.5, and still the SD card doesn't show up on the computer. I have HTC Sync installed, but it crashes when I plug the phone in.
The SD card is formatted as FAT32.
Is there anything else I can do to browse the SD card on my PC? What did you guys do to get your SD card to show up on the PC for the first time?
Thanks for your help.

Some daft questions:
Did the SD function fine ever, eg with stock ROM when you first got the phone?
Have you tried an alternate SD card in the same phone?
Have you tried a different USB lead?
Have you tried on a different PC?
Have you tried another USB cabel?
Swyped from my Desire S
[Solved]
I found out what the problem was. After having a look at My computer -> Properties -> Device Manager, I found that two of the USB Controllers were not working properly and the SD card was detected as an "Unknown Device".
I uninstalled HTC Sync, fast boot drivers, and anything related to Android or HTC from my computer.
I then uninstalled the USB controller drivers by right-clicking on each and selecting Uninstall, and the same for the "Unknown Device". After a restart Windows started scanning for drivers for these devices and they started working perfectly again.
The SD card now shows up in My Computer when I plug the phone in, without the help of any HTC drivers.
I hope that helps others who come across this problem. Thanks to everyone who tried to help me with this problem. I appreciate your help guys.
i had that too.... i formatted it wiht my desire hd and it worked
Great to hear that this is resolved.

[Q] SD Card encryption time

hi,
how long it takes? 32GB card. And - after end I'll have to put PIN code everytime I'll connect device as mass storage? For now I don't even know it's done or not, but I'm backing up my data from PC, and phone doesn't wants any code

Adopted SD card, forgot- recover data?

Hello guys,
My partner changed her SD card without realising the exisiting one was "adopted" as internal storage. All of her photos of our kids are on there. She clicked "forget sd card" at the prompt without realising this makes the SD card essentially useless to recover the data.
Is there any way to recover this data? Obviously the PC does not recognise the SD card as its encrypted, so we cannot pull the photos off that way. The phone asks to format the device so I cannot pull the photos off with a usb cable either.
From what I've read, the phone generates a key for the encryption using the screen unlock pattern. We know what this is, so have a chance of unlocking the SD card as we know what the master key is. The phone is not rooted- as far as I know this changes the encryption on that end, so any attempt to root the phone to get access will not work as the keys will not match anymore. Are there tools to brute force the encryption on the SD card? I would hate to lose the data on this.
Thanks
