I haz searched and cannot find an easy solution on backing up SMS and contacts to switch to an iPhone or Android device. I don't want to dev unlock the phone or anything. It's a Lumia 710 I am selling on the MP and I just need to back up SMS and contacts to a format that Android could read later.
Any way to do this easily?
I found this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947674
which I will try, but I am worried about the SMS too which I can't figure out.
SMS backup is not possible
I am pretty sure that WP7 itself does not offer something to backup SMS, and there can't be any normal, regular app (i.e. for a phone that is not unlocked) backing up SMS, because WP7 does not allow apps access to the SMS store.

I got the contacts, on the SMS thing, how hard is it to unlock the device and use something to back it up?
I only used WP7 on my HD2 really and don't know about some of the nuances. All of the roms came unlocked so yeah...

Has anyone found a way to import SMS messages into Phone 7 yet? I'm looking at moving from Android over to Phone 7 and I've got a few years worth as I was able to migrate them from my WinMo 6.x phone to Android when I made that change. If it can be avoided, I don't want to lose all my messages in the switch over to Phone 7.
there is no way currently to import sms or back them up either.
Not sure why you would want years of sms's.
I was afraid you'd say that.
honestly, I'm a recovering pack-rat so by nature I keep things until they get in my way. It has been handy though, I've dug a few alternate phone numbers and addresses out of the older messages a few times. This isn't a deal breaker for me, just not my ideal.
Thanks again for the info.
I can give you a pretty good reason - I need mine as proof against my psycho ex girlfriend. How's that for reason? I guess people have their reasons when they ask, don't you?

then keep the phone with them on it. And if you really need them for "proof", the police can get them from the carrier.
Sent from my HD7 using Board Express
I take it that there is no way to transfer sms from one wp7 to another then?
I have a limited number of texts that I have managed to keep on the sim over the years for sentimental reasons, eg, from now deceased loved ones.
I have never understood why OFFICE has never integrated SMS, allowing you to use plug ins to send and store SMS . They have facebook etc connectors.
I thought all sms, pics, contacts etc could be synced with your email address and stored using microsoft myphone?

Hi Kappo
The OP wants to get the SMS's off his current Android phone and import them into his WP7 but has no way to get the messages into MyPhone
So is that possible? If yes, how?
Also contacts, they transfer with the sim card because I have saved all my contacts to my sim card?
I'm not sure its possible to do that, since there is not native way to back up and save your current WP7 text messages. I doubt there would be a way to transfer ones from anywhere.
However for contacts, since you have an Android phone you most likely have a Google account. Just sign in with your account on your WP7 device and it will all sync like magic.
Behold, the cloud.
WP7 doesn't have SMS backup? wow... Well, that sucks, I really don't want to lose all my messages, some of them are really important and bring back good memories...

You must be really attached to those texts. You know all the naughty pics you can just send back to yourself.
No nothing like that XD there's just some messages that I really want to keep... Even though I usually don't read my old messages I just want to keep them as memories
Yes,
it's been a while, but the subject's still up-to-date.
Same thing here. I'd just like to move from Windows Mobile 6.5.
From Exchange 2010 it's possible to sync text messages between the phone and the server. But it appears that goes only for messages which arrive AFTER the sync setup. I haven't found a way to make the phone upload older texts to the server.
Also I don't think a new phone would download all past text messages from the server after pairing.
There's poll to make Microsoft implement a way: http://wpdev.uservoice.com/forums/110705-app-platform/suggestions/1901813-sms-backup?ref=title
That's the only thing preventing me to move to WP7. Most awesome would be if PIMbackup would provide a way. I've asked the programer via mail if he saw a way, but I haven't gotten any response.
If I had no other choice I would forward those SMS messages to my self some how either through email or someother method. Just an idea.
Basically a nice idea. Unfortunately sender numbers and timestamps would be lost :-(
With multiple hundred messages that's important data for me.
But thanks for the idea!
Hey guys.
Caused by Samsungs GREAT settings to delete SMS in conversations > 200 SMS i have lost 2500 SMS on my GalaxyNote after the first sms restore.
I have a backup of all SMS before the GalaxyNote and would make a backup of today (maybe with another tool which can handle sms which are on my phone twice)
I want to join them together to get all my sms back together.
How can i do this?
First of all: I am currently using this SMS Backup tool:Click
Is there any SMS Backup Tool wich only restores SMS which are NOT on the device? I dont want to have some of my SMS twice on my device.
My Idea was to delete all sms, then i restore the BackupFile from before the GalaxyNote with my SMS Tool right now and then i restore the current backup.
I hope you understand my Situation.
PS: Mixing up both XML BackupFiles is insane because i have 3500+ SMS and they are all numbered consecutively in both files.
Go SMS Pro, has build in backup & restore
and when you restore, it will only restore the missing SMS
on a side note i also use SMS Backup + (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync)
but it will restore everything, causing duplicates
but that's not why i use it, i like that one because it can log calls / times, and SMS to google account and calendar, so it creates a good log of daily use, and tracking, is great for business when you are trying to remember customers calls and when it was done
My Backup is a good app for this

You wont like this, but two considerations:
- The setting remained unchanged, its Google/Android in general, not Samsung
- Its caused by you, by not paying attention, by not being prepared, not by Samsung nor Google.
This post is in no way intended to offend, I just cant stand this spitting around BS because one is enraged bc he fukkered up and blames everyone and everybody except himself. I mean this in a general, not a personal way. But it does touch you slightly, though

My phone was locked to T-world, but it's now rooted and ready to go! BUT i have one problem and that is SMS. I'm limited to a maximum of 80 letters. obviously that is not even close to what I want and almost all my texts are longer than 80.
I need to type in my own phone number too, seriously annoying.
My question is..
is it possible to just replace the whole SMS bit from my phone with the one in the regulare GS2? If this is possible (fingers crossed), how do I do that? I'm a n00b with android and the entire operating system, so go easy on me .
I tried various kinds of SMS applications, however none of them work. With the stock SMS app I can send/receive sms, but with the other apps it's not working at all.
Another tip I got was to find a jolly old phone and type in my phone nr there in the settings as a simple "hack", but I tried a few phones but can't seem to find this option in any of them.
My phone is rooted, and ready to be dug into.
Please help me out guys (and gals)
I really want a fix for this, please help
sms
I was able to get Go SMS PRO (free on Google Play Market) to work and I can send 160 character messages if that will help you out.
handcent sms
download handcent sms app from google play open it go to settings>send message settings>scroll down and you will see this option ''if you are using a samsung'' and check this option.its working with me.
ive been googling around and i cant find a modern thread about syncing sms and mms. i was hoping for hangout to do this but they decided not to i guess... anyways i was wondering if there is a practical way to sync sms messages. using hangout as my primary sms...er.... suggestions appreciated

Not sure if you're willing but if you port your number to Google Voice all your text messages are in the cloud and will sync for every device you install GV on.

dont i have to cancel my contract for that
I use SMS Backup+ and it does backup text messages done through hangouts but I cannot restore texts to hangouts from these backups.
I have read that SMS Backup and Restore does work on KitKat and our N5s but there may be a hoop or two you have to jump through.
I need to find a good auto backup and ability to restore my texts, I miss that from my previous Android phones.

Downloaded SMS Backup and restore. Downloaded the back up from my google drive . Restored the messages and a message appeared that i will have to set the default app to SMS Backup and Restore . Did that and then made Hangout the default app. all the restored messages appeared in hangout.
After this you can install any of the SMS apps from the play store like Go SMS Pro , Textra etc etc . Once this is done, Go to the settings of Hangout and uncheck the option of Hangout as the SMS app . All your text messages will now appear in the new SMS app you have downloaded from the play store.

Oh, sorry, I totally forgot that some people are still on contracts. But once your contract is up in the future that would be a viable solution.
Assuming you're on Sprint with that contract you can also integrate your Sprint number with Google Voice which will have the exact reversible effect as permanently porting it.
Besides some backup and restore solutions that some other guys left above there really isn't anything that will sync your text messages.
