Thinking of going from X to S - HTC One S

Hi,
I initially bought the One X, but have had 4 different devices due to a lot of faults. Now my current device is almost faultless, well the glass is not glued tightly en the left side, so it collects a lot of dust, and there's actually a little under the glass
I'm also not impressed by the battery life of the X, but actually just did the battery test with the latest update and it only went down to 89% after 1 hour with screen on max. Will see how it works out the rest of the day. Normally I couldn't get more than 2,5-3 hours of screen on time out of my devices.
Now, can you tell me how the battery life is on the One S? It certainly should be better. The battery time is quite important to me.
I guess it will also be hard to go back from a crisp HD screen. I have been to the shops and compared the two, and of course it's a lot worse when they're right next to each other, but taking in to consideration that I come from a Galaxy S2, I should be able to live with it. Any thoughts about the screen?
The size difference doesn't matter that much. I have relative big hands, so I can manage with the big X but of course the S is more comfortable to hold and especially when texting with one hand (I guess).
I'm really torn between the two and can't really decide what to do. I hope some of you can enlighten me

Edit: Forget to say that I'm not playing so many games, but use the phone a lot for browsing, texting, facebook, google mail/cal/addressbook and maps/navigation...
The fact that I am under time pressure doesn't help me make up my mind. If I want to exchange it, I will have to do se within the next 27 hours :S

Hvaen't used One X, but for a pentile none-HD display, One S has pretty good quality screen. I also have not found any defects on my grey One S (only a few software glitches)

As for the battery life:
This is of course a very subjective answer but anyway.
I ordered both, the S and the X, and began to play with the X.
After installing everything, updating it etc. I played with it "a bit". Not as much as you would think when it comes to owning a new phone, but still. And at the end of the day (it wasn´t even dark outside) the battery gave up.
The next day, I did the same with the S. 2 days later, the battery of the S gave.
So much for that.
As for the screen: Like you´ve already said, there is a big difference, no doubt about it.
The question is, do you really a big HD screen? Obviously you don´t play games but do you watch HD videos for example?
I for one use my tablet for HD stuff, so the S suits me just fine.
Also, another point on the plus side is that S isn´t getting as hot as my old Desire. And compared to the X...well...you get it.

I had the choice between the X and S, I chose the S, i dont regret it, I love it the battery life is amazing, The storage is mediocre, but the dropbox is a bonus..
I like the screen, I really like AMOLED screens so that doesnt bother me.. I like the fact we have less but more powerful processors than the X, Bigger isnt always better...
I have never used or tested the X, I would like too im wondering whether i should swap the S for the X as development on this device is non existent But would i regret making that decision ??
The biggest separator between these 2 phones is the screen... I dont give a $h!t.. I have my laptop, My plasma 3d TV, I dont need a 100,000,000 x 100,000,000 pixel screen with all this fancy ****,, Its a phone. as long as it looks nice and can do what i want it to do, ill be happy lol

Well I have an iPad that I can use for HD videos, but in the beginning my intention was to use the phone for that with the big screen and the high resolution. If I'm only able to watch 3-4 hours of videos before the battery runs out of juice, then it doesn't really make sense to use the phone for that.
So you say that your One S lasted more than twice as long as the X with approximately the same usage (screen on, data connection, etc.)?

I'm just sceptic about the pentile matrix.. Is it noticeable during everyday use, or are you noticing in any situations?
I know I don't need a billion pixels, but it's just nicer to look at a crisp display and not being able to so the pixels. Actually I'm sometimes catching myself at moving the phone closer to my eyes while browsing the web. Don't even notice it before the bright screen becomes to exhausting for my eyes
Custom ROMs isn't a factor for me, cause I'll probably stick with the original Sense..

I have a X guess I'm lucky. No problem. Just got a S on craiglist ....the S faster I have to say. I like the form factor of the x better tho.

What are your thought about the difference in the battery life?
So you like the X better because it's wider, or?
And are there any situations, when using the S, where you would want it to have a better screen?

I dont notice it at all, It gets slated a lot which i think is unfair.. Its being made out that this screen is awful.. its not awful, its just not the best out there..
I personally like it because when im playing games or watching youtube. The colours blow me away.. They are so bright and clear.. Thats the bonus of it
I guess you may notice because you have the X, But if you had neither and went for the S, you wouldnt think its a bad screen at all

Hands down One S
The One S beats out the One X in quadrant, so I've heard, and has the same exact features as the One X minus maybe the more storage space? Not sure because there's some discrepencies between the specs on different sites.
It's kind of like comparing the iPad 2 to the iPad 3. You're going to a higher resolution but that just means it takes more processing power and the phone's performance will be down. Is the larger screen resolution worth it, especially if it's not taken advantage of? (which I'm not absolutely sure of but leaning towards no)
I love the 4.3" devices and how they dwarf the iPhone, but seriously, the One X is a lot bigger than most other phones.. is the bulk worth it?
I decided on a One S because I'm with T-Mobile and AT&T's data plan is ridiculous in price when compared to T-Mobile. I mean, 3 gigs of data for more $$$ than I pay at T-Mobile for 5 gigs?
The other thing is quad-core vs. dual-core. The quad-core on a phone really isn't going to make much of a difference except for apps/games that use it.
I would choose greater performance over higher resolution every day of the week. Higher resolution, especially when the lower one is fine (like on a tablet/phone) is just a GPU hog.
I'm VERY happy with the purchase Would do it again.
The only downside is the 10GB of internal storage which is surprisingly low (it's not 16GB as advertised), but I can live with that.. Plus the Dropbox space is cumilative to what you already have, so I have 38GB of dropbox space now and pay nothing for it.
All in all I think One S is a kickass phone. AND Otterbox is releasing a Defender case for it (not so for the One X, at least afaik)
PS: My Quadrant score on stock ROM is 5990. Best score I've ever seen on any Android device. The difference in performance is noticable even without seeing the score. It only dipped below 60fps on the double helix rendering. Must say I did have SetCPU set to performance when running. Can't wait to see it with a custom ROM

I've had both and settled with the S. After a day, the size of the One X got very tiresome. I could not handle a phone that size comfortably. I know someone else who has done the same too.
We have PC's and Mobile devices, we seem to be forgetting what mobile should be 4.3" is definitely my personal limit.

Well I had the one s from tmo USA for about a week now. And I can tell I'm love the phone and the battery is awesome. I'm coming from the mytouch4g and i had to carry my charger everywhere. I will upload a pic of my screenshot from the one s. I use it for 5 1/2 hour with heavy usages and still have 70% life left. I'm taking about texting, talking, internet, listen to music, and playing games. Gps. And downloading on charge . This phone is awesome.

Guys, thank you all for the advice you gave! I was at the store today and exchanged it for the One S in black, and I love it even though I've only had it for an hour now I just hope it won't start chipping of.. we'll see.

just wanted to share my experience i had today.
got a call from my local dealership that the One X had arrived, as i had shown huge interest in it.. as my previous phone got molested by my car..
went to take a look on the sexy thing. and the screen blew me away, but got a little disappointed when actually holding the phone, didn't get a "premium" feel that a 800$ phone should have. sure, it has a very practical poly carbonate shell casing etc..
but i had made up my mind anyway and was going to close the deal and walk away with the X, then the salesman opened up a drawer and put the One S in my hands.. it was not put up on display as they just arrived that hour.
well, what can i say?.. it really appealed to me, the thickness, the weight, the sturdiness, the cold matte surface.. it just felt so good that i bought it without even seeing it being turned on.. silly? i guess.. but we hit it off from the first second..
was worried about the screen as i just had a Razr, and was not so fond of the pentile screen, but this is something different.. better calibrated? who knows, it looks very nice..
i think last time i had this feeling for a phone out of the box was my first android, a htc hero.. and it have been about 8-10 android phones (even a ipone, brrrr.. that lasted 3 days i think) in between that.
hoping the community and developers will remember this phone also, when the smoke from the One X has settled.

i would say that the colors are more accurate, and yes, not so pixelated as i noticed on the Razr. also not any "spots" when the screen is dark.

Awesome, thanks. Yeah it was my suspicion that Motorola did a poor job implementing the screen on their devices. I'm sure the screen will exhibit some of the shortcomings of the technology, but what I saw on the Moto phones was quite alarming.

You just made the wait for me even harder... I hope I get that same experience with the One S

I had just about made my mind up to go for a One S. I walked into an O2 shop in Germany today and they had a live One X display model, as well as dummy versions of both the One X and S. It was actually the One X that appealed more when I compared [the dummy versions] side-by-side due to the larger display size.
I guess I will have to wait until I can find a genuine One S on display to make my mind up...

Same happened to us my wife was all excited about the One X until she held it so she opted for the One S more user friendly

I guess I'll have to give it some time, but it feels too big and the battery really sucks.
Do you know anything about how the camera, battery and sound quality (from 3.5mm) is on the One S compared to the X?

Camera is the same, battery life will be better because of less cores and smaller screen, and sound quality I can't imagine is any different

Which firmware version do you have?
If you got the 1.26, then you should wait for the 1.27 ...
Battery life on the One X should be a lot better with this new version
Nevertheless, battery life on the One S will always be better (except for standby) due to the 28nm architecture and the lower resolution screen.

Engadget says that there is a difference in camera performance, altough hardware is exactly the same.
It seems that the One X performs a bit better as the software is more optimized.

Rousseauxy: couldnt tell, cause we had a cloudy day today. but as far as daylight it is no problem at all.. very bright and high contrast as Amoled is known for.
Ascot17; cant argue with you there, the One X screen is better.. but the feel of the phones compared next to each other left me no doubt.. the one X feels cheap compared to the S. and also the 4.3" screen is easier to handle grip-wise.. but specs on the X are awesome. but then again, the dual core Kraits are hardcore..
with the 28nm Krait cores battery life should be much better than the X. only had one charge on the phone so hard to say. but lasted to the day without any problem. been alot of fiddling to say the least!
Unclespoon; the camera is awesome. this is the best i have ever seen on a phone. even my wife's panasonic Lumix camera is struggling to keep up to this. HTC have been amazing at the camera front. if the camera is better on the X, i cant say since i didn't get to try it much. but i cant believe it is better since both phones runs the same hardware on the cameras..

I just bought the One S today and it's charging right now so I've not used it yet. I read the reviews of the X and the S but went for the S due to the better battery life and the speed. The X may have more cores and a bigger screen but the S is meant to be faster and the screen is big enough for me

Just received mine, it's the most ****ing sexy phone I have ever seen. It's incredible. If I was hesitating between the One S, One X and the Galaxy Nexus, I don't regret for a second my choice.

I can completely share this experience. Went to look for both devices, honestly more eager for the X.. but having both of them directly in front of me I lost interest in the X completely and only focused on the S.. the difference in quality/haptic is huge.. sure, the display of the X is a blast.. but to cite my girlfriend who was standing right next to me in this situation (translated):
"are you totally nuts?! i know you for sure and i love you.. even for wanting to stay a little boy.. but that's not a mobile at all(One X)!! go and buy a freaking ipad or i don't know in addition but this is ridiculous...and it looks cheap compared to this stylish thing (One S)"
What should I say: she's absolutely right.

Have been into a phone shop today and had a play with both phones. Am going for the One S as well. It feels more comfortable in the hand. The One X looks really good but feels like a stretch for my thumb.

Just out of curiosity, talking small hands. Would any of you who have owned the device happen to have as small hands as I? I have gloves size 10 and 9(thight fit) and wonder if the S will be comfortable used one-handed. I've already ruled out the X on specs alone. No way my hands fit that 4.7" screen.

So I'm currently on a lumia 900 and love it but the marketplace is too immature and its not worth investing into the ecosystem right now so my question is onex x or note? And try not to be biased just cause you own one lol thanks

I just recently purchased my an HTC One X and I am extremely happy with it. I would say that I prefer it over my Galaxy Note that I'm about to sell. The main attraction of the Note is of course it's size but that was also my biggest gripe. It was too large and I fumbled with it a lot when taking it out of my pocket. In addition, the HOX is much faster and overall Sense 4.0 is actually not bad at all in my opinion.

Size of the note is polarizing issue. You either love it or hate it. Also, the S4 processor can literally run circles around the aging S3 processor used in Note.

Sense is what I'm scared of. I've tried almost every version but this new one and its always been a bad experience. How was your experience with the note besides the size?

as for the processor I'm more concerned about everyday use and app launching. Not really a mobile gamer

At this point I feel like you're better off waiting for the Note 2 if you want something that size. The hardware in the Note seems to be getting dated if you're looking to buy it now and spend the next 1-2 years with it...

which phone has a better battery life by the end of the day with pretty heavy use. Which gives you more of that WOW user experience

I would say One X not because I have it, but I also had the choice and chose the One, Note (AT&T version) uses a Snapdragon S3 and found it to be really laggy in compared to the One. Looks like it struggles to push a screen of that resolution
Opinion based: Sense 4 > Touchwiz 4
That being said, the note does offer expandible storage and bigger removable battery if that is high on your list. Also if the bigger screen with S Pen is something you would like

Well, what i can say is...
The NOTE has been in the drawer since i got the one x..
the battery life is not a concern to me because all smarphones i've used in the past will not last me more than a day for my usage, you'll always have to charge it in the end of the day, i would not chance it to leave it unplugged for the night so MAYBE it could last another..
I do miss the screen size, but the screen looks better on the ONE x.
Everything is more snappy on the device, also sense is not that bad.. to me.
If i were you, i would buy this ONE X because NOTE is last gen.. i have both the international and ATT version of the NOTE, they are simply not on par with ONE x in terms of the snappy feeling.

Sold my note for the One X. The stock experience in the One X is much, much better.
The S Pen is a gimmick that you'll use maybe for the first week. Unless you are a serious artist and it's just something you love to do.
Also the Note's aspect ratio is too wide. This causes problems in certain apps and it's just pretty awkward. The One X you can use much more easily with a single hand.
Battery life and performance on the One X also puts the note to shame in every way.

I currently own both devices, as well.
Hardware is top-notch on the One X and I love the camera and screen very much. Not thrilled about the power button placement and feedback, but I could live with it.
Some of the Sense enhancements are very nice (such as Facebook and Twitter integration in contacts), but HTC completely ruined ICS multitasking on this phone. Seriously, it's bad. I've been testing it all morning against my Galaxy Nexus and even my iPhone 4s.
It doesn't even restore saved states of apps, it just reloads them completely. Browser webpages completely reload, music apps get killed in the background, etc. I'm not sure if it's something they will fix with an update or a sacrifice they made for battery life, but when iOS has better multitasking, it says a lot.
I'm on the fence on whether I'll keep it or not. I personally think my Gnex runs better and faster. But when I think about giving up the camera and screen, it makes me sad. Go into AT&T and test the multitasking before you buy. See if it's something you can live with. Because it almost completely cripples the phone for me.

i have a Verizon galaxy nexus and enjoy the multitasking and have fiddled with it on the one x at at&t and I have to agree its horrible. I hate that you can only really see one app at a time compared to stock ics

i've had both as well, and the one X crushes the note in pretty much every way aside from physical dimensions and having a uSD slot in it.
the battery is better on the 1x, the screen is better, the camera is better, sense>touchwiz, the phone is faster for daily tasks.
plus, personally the note makes me feel like an idiot every time i have to answer or make a phone call or type with one hand.

Honestly it depends on what you want from the two phones. Me and a buddy had a discussion about this exact subject a few days ago.
He went with the note for the larger screen size, as he is a major e-book junkie. As for me my choice came down to about everything else I like playing games and such on my phone. and i wanted something that i could toss anything to and it run just fine.
I also prefer the design of the One X over the note, keep in mind I was looking at both the Note and the One X at the AT&T store before making a choice. To me the One X felt amazing in my hand as to where the note just felt out right silly, if i really wanted something that was half phone and half tablet, i would rather just go ahead and get a tablet to begin with imo

Honestly I like the one x but the lack of sd slot and removable battery are deal breakers for me. Will most likely keep it but the wife or in laws will use it.
Rooted note vs stock one x i hardly notice the performance difference. development will make the one x a clear winner i know.
Sadly development will not change my mind on which i use daily ...only due to the battery and sd issue. Not to mention..I actually use the stylus frequently.

It's worse than that. The One X aggressively kills apps that are running in the background. Web pages have to reload every single time you come back to the browser, game states reset, and streaming music dies. There's something inherently wrong with the multitasking on the One X and it needs to be fixed.
I also experience unexplained delays receiving mail in my Exchange accounts. Sometimes they just won't come in for 15-20 minutes unless I manually refresh, other times, they come in fine. Galaxy Nexus never has an issue.

I am about to buy a new phone in the next month or so. I have been following the new phone release and seems like HTC One X and S III are the ones I am considering. I have had galaxy S for 2 years and it is time to upgrade.
I really like the solid design of the One X, it looks better, feels sturdier, screen is better... And my question is, if I am going to put custom ROMs on my phone, why should I choose One X over the S III (international versions)? My only strong point for the S III is the bigger battery and better contrast. But some say it is faster..

Within two months, you will get bored of the touchwiz ui. But one x has sense and if you like it, with a little modifications, and with custom roms, you will never get bored of your phone

I'm kind of in the same boat. I haven't held the S3 yet so I don't know how it looks/feels in the hand. The OneX feels solid and comfortable to me. I think the OneX with a Sense-less ICS ROM would be super fast and more enjoyable. I'm leaning that way with my decision.

Go for the S3. Bigger development, cm9 from people who actually build from source themselves and i would trust my life in their hands so to speak. Codeworkx and Xplowild could not get any better and really wished they supported the One X but that is not going to happen, more AOSP and AOKP roms for the S3 and you probably get the best kernel developer i know and that Gokhanmoral as well...And the list goes on. One x might be better looking but you have so much more going for the S3 which is supercurio for one releasing his app for it specially with the better sound chip for it and well i can go on..
One X is a great phone with great potential..but with all the replacements i had and with their poor service and Quality Control have left a bad taste in my mouth and will never go for HTC again...Do not get me wrong development for this phone is only just getting started..But if you are a samsung boy and loved the development on the s2 then s3 is the place to be for you..just wished i waited a bit longer
But seriously my best advice to you..Wait a few more weeks. Watch videos and watch comparisons...And then make a judgement on yourself on what you need the phone for. Sense is ten times better than TW no doubt. But like i said take your time and do your research..And if you do go for the One X make sure you get a phone which is build like a gold phone..Make sure it is perfect and solid..Then you will not regret it

Real world speed is the same. Both have minor flaws and particular strengths. For me, the s3 is less aestheticaly pleasing (read:yuk) and the screen has a pink hue on greys, I can't stand touch wiz and I dislike the unrealistic colours on amoled screens.

I agree I had a go on the one x saw sense and the shell and was like I want it! Glad I did as I dislike the look of the s3 not that it is ugly or anything hox just appeals to me more.

I always though HTC phones look sexier and simply better.. but looking at some reviews a couple of things scare me. For example, when browsing the way it redraws while zooming; multitasking when switching programs also redraws.. the small battery also does not give me great confidence..

The HOX looks far better, the bluey coloured SIII looks very cheap, and to me the proportions look wrong on the front - weird angle curves, and too much bezel at top and bottom.
AMOLED provides less than realistic colours, if its anything like the SII and youre used to a properly calibrated TV/PC Monitor you'll laugh.
Having had a pentile display phone before the One X (Droid 3) no matter what the PPI youre going to notice the Pentile matrix on font and icon edges if you have the screen relatively close to your face, like when you're reading it in bed or something. Minor niggle but it annoyed me. Reading on the One X is like reading a magazine, it looks printed on.
The only positive for me is the bigger battery, but in real world usage i.e. Web Browsing itll only offer you about 40 mins more according to GSM Arena due to the high draw of the AMOLED display on white. Video life is about 4 hours longer, though. Saying that, if you have time to watch a video you'd be in a situation where you could use HTC's small battery bank to see you through it on the one x and have battery left to play with on a flight or long outing (should have a car charger so incar use wouldn't be an issue).
Regarding the above, GSMArena's battery life tests are very unscientific. The One X's display is among the brightest, and far brighter than the SII (double brightness nearly) so if the SIII is the same, the battery life at similar brightness to the One X's default levels would be negligable in texting/browsing/everyday use, again, bar video playback.
There is also the element of standing from the crowd a little - the One X is in my opinion (and many reviewers) the best looking phone to date - It matters to me to enjoy looking at something I use so often, so it helps.
Custom ROMS will come as well, its a major device with global variants so CM9 support will come I'd assume.
As far as build goes, I have sent one back but only because I'm very picky and the screen gap on the left was a tiny bit too much for my liking but I'm pretty sure 75% of the people on the replacement threads have got OCD with the number of replacements theyre having, or they use their phones punishingly. I didnt have flicker after the latest OTA either. The flex is the major issue regarding build, but my Dad's iPhone has the same thing if you press on the edges of the screens, every phone has it.

Im a fairly heavy user and the battery is great for me.
Streaming radio/and mp3 is all done with the companion core for example and with screen off the battery graph is basically flat even whilst streaming over HSPA for a good while.
I can get 4/4hr30 web browsing and if you think about it, you don't need any more than that - with any phone nowadays youre looking at an overnight charge really so it makes no odds whether that number is a bit less or a bit more.
The browser redraw is instantaneous, and looks good - the text fades and fades back as an effect rather than jerking all the text round like opera - you dont notice the time it takes.
Multitasking Fix This may be of great use - it was to me on my Droid 3 and I noticed weird settings posted on here in HTC's default Build.prop that explain IMO the memory Issues people are perceiving.
Multitasking can easily be fixed in build prop. Some of the default HTC settings baffle me. Or use RomToolbox by JRummy
Ive not rooted yet but on my D3 (512mb ram) I used dirty ratio 70% (HOX default is 0%....!) Dirty background 90% (Hox default is 30%) and vfs cache pressure 10. Hox default is 100. This makes android flush the cache less often, saving battery and eliminating stutter, keeps apps in background ram leaving you where you left off and doesn't negatively impact on battery life or degrade performance over time. I've no idea why the HOX's default settings are so aggressive - unless they thought users might get an errant app, leave it running and complain when they dont know why the battery is draining... kill OOM allocating task was also a yes.
On my Droid 3 with the above settings, I could infinitely multitask (VM Heap of 48mb - but on HOX you could easily double that for more tabs in browser etc) and my battery gained a perceived time of about an hour at least - maybe more, due to the apps always remaining open and CPU time not having to be used reopening them and redrawing the past state they were in because theyve been pushed out of RAM.
I researched the above for ages when I had my D3 (even with 512 ram Moto's settings were way less aggressive than HTC's are at default) and made sure they wouldn't cause lag over time, or loss of performance over time - as well as providing optimal battery life.
Finally!
If you're planning on keeping the phone for some time (I can't see much that can improve on this, heck I wouldnt have got rid of my D3 had i not bricked it!) HTC are very good with software updates, the best around on unbranded devices really. They've just listed devices to recieve ICS - and those included some devices that were 18 Months old with a single core processor. This would suggest to me the One X will not only get Jelly Bean, but probably the next iteration (Released end of summer/fall 2013 most likely), should the hardware requirements not change massively (although 1gb RAM and Quad Core looks pretty safe for 18 months IMO).

I myself am coming from a galaxy s. Not sure how much the amoled screen is worse than the s2 on the s1 in comparison. I do know,however, that this super LCD2 screen on my htc one x is a thing that's going to be difficult to leave should I ever have to decide between this phone or a super amoled phone in the future.
Browsing-wise: I think we are all going to end up using google chrome in the long run. With the updates it gets, i believe it's sooner or later going to be the browser everyone's going to replace their original browser with.
I personally use google chrome browser on my phone myself. It's much faster than other IMO. Especially loading time is amazing and super smooth.
Battery is debatable. Personally, I wish i could squeeze an hour more hour out of my phone. On a full use I easily hit the 3 hours mark screen on time(3h 10m~). Probably just like most One X owners. Depending on your phone usage though, it's safe to say that the battery life on the HTC One X on standy by is godlike Seen people go for 4 days.
The highest i have reached was 3 hours 31 minutes. I think i could have even exceeded that by now but i just don't bother anymore and plug the phone in before it depletes.
It gets me through a day with ease plus i don't know what htc is up to. As far as I know this phone still needs optimization(take what i say with a grain of salt on this part). As I have no idea if the battery is going to improve in future or not. Just my gut feeling tells me it is, but a gut feeling is just that, a gut feeling. I wish HTC would at least communicate with us users more. Really kind of disappointing on their part.
Oh well, this is the insight i'm capable of giving.
p.s: i'm not one of those users who had to send his phone in for multiple replacements. So yeah, i can understand the users who do suggest the S3 for alone that reason. Because we all just want a phone that functions and don't want to constantly have it replaced just to replace it again.

Yeah! This is actually true as well. Considering the fact that SG3 has got more support. Or at least that's what I always read and i don't doubt it. Probably a customized rom for the gs3 will be running better than the one x's.

Other negatives for the HOX include quality control with the screen flex and squeeky noises at least thats what I get!
With s-on am currently locked down so am having to wait for the network provider to bring about all the fixes in the updates unless I use custom roms but then I can't change the radio etc due to s-on..... Would be great if the phone was cracked in that sense.
Also the soundchip is not that great, could be better.
Battery is bad for me due to being on older firmware so screen on time is about 2hrs and the battery is dead.....
Currently sent mine back to htc due to hardware issues.....

I would wait to see the SIII however i cant't see samsung moving away from using inferior plastic for the shell. This spoils everything.
Also, the cool software will be ported shortly therefore I can't see a reason for choosing the SIII over the HOX. It's all about feeling in the hand........

Its a matter of choice. Both HTC and samsung stock UIs are horrible in my eyes. The main differentiating factor is the more powerful CPU in the galaxy s3, expandable memory and removable/better battery. Its downsides are the pentile display and cheap look.
Both will come with many custom ROMS so flashing a custom rom holds no advantage for the one X

Don't know what you guys expect with battery life on the one x to be honest, I love my HOX , I can run it with several phone calls and texts, bit of browsing on here, read books daily and usually get a couple days out of the battery, yes, if you hammer it with games like riptide, then be prepared for it to eat battery, but I imagine that will be no different on any quad core phone

So I have to either return/replace my HOX due to a camera problem anyway, but since the Galaxy S3 is coming out pretty soon, I'm thinking of just returning it and waiting a few weeks for the GS3. It seems the Galaxy S3 is faster on benchmarks, is there really any disadvantage to it? All benchmarks were from the international version, although the dual core in the AT&T version is claimed to be just as fast. Any opinions?

Both phones will be just as fast as each other, if you ask me. The only difference is the 2gb of RAM.
But let me say this again. 2gb of RAM is unecessary for a mobile platform like Android. Not bad, but unnecessary. The only reason why Samsung put the 2gb of RAM in it is to market it as a better feature, as it can't market the processor as the average public sees dual core as average right now. 2gb of RAM is appealing to the average consumer, but for us, we know it really won't do much in terms of processing power on Android.
This is how I see it:
You want a cheap and ugly device? Get the SGIII
You want a beutiful device? Get the HOX
I don't mean to sound biased, but I'm coming from the GSII and I loved it because it was fast. Not because of the quality, but because of the speed. The fact was that I was sick of Samsungs crappy build quality; it just doesn't feel right. Thats why I jumped ship to HTC and let me say that I am very impressed.
And now that we have bootloader unlock, theres none of that "HTC sucks a$$" because even though they do in terms of giving in to AT&T's demands, firstly theres no saying that they won't do the same for the GSIII and that we won't be seeing a lot of development.
In terms of the removable battery and SD card slot, niehter of those are a problem for me. SD Card = Only if you go crazy with storing stuff. Removable battery = You won't be able to run down the battery life on this thing easily.
In my opinion, the One X is the superior device. But really, it comes down to what you want.
And don't let that whole multitasking issue fool you for the HOX. It will be remidied soon with an AOSP build of ICS.

I am in the same boat as you. I installed Apex launcher today and that made it a little better, then rooted and installed the vanilla messaging app, but the 8 hour or less battery life I can't handle along with HTC Sense.
I purchased mine through Amazon though....and don't exactly know how the return process works, nor will they let me get a S3. I have until the 21st to figure out how to unroot this thing and trade it in.

Unroot is easy....if you unlocked the bootloader there's nothing you can do about that. It will say either unlocked or relocked.

its using the same s4 chip, same phone, just more ram?

Not giving up on my One X, but more ram would be very beneficial for the One X. Sense is killing this phone. Although I'd like to have an AOKP or CM9 build....sense is nice.
And what happened with Google saying that they were gonna require all ICS phones to have the ability to run stock Holo. Did someone make that up or did Google go back on it?

Saying this since no one else has. The android 4.0 OS uses ram like windows. For android its beneficial has it makes opening apps quicker. Hence why a lot of ram is being used. Technically the gsIII will show roughly 1.5 gigs for use for the system since 400 MB will be for the GPU another 100-300 for UI rest for apps.
So far 2gb ram is a good thing. But, not always is more good. More ram equals more power equals less battery life especially if its unused. Even the heaviest user won't use more than a gig of it.
Basically how you see free ram on the HOX will be the same on the GSIII. Also The GSIII needs that ram to run all the little animations for touchwiz. I wouldn't be surprised if a majority is allocates just for SVoice and TW.
IMHO, the GSIII is step backward from forward innovation of Android 4.0. Since it wasn't deisgned for 2gb ram. The S4 is but looking at its specs 5% more power is used to run the read write to that extra gig.
Look at the power specs. Do it by match. There's less battery time to power to usage ratio on the GSIII with the ram and the amoled then with the HOX

If the international version had a screen as nice as our One X, I would get it in a heart beat. The Pentile is the major killer for the SGS3. Secondary to that is the design, the phone looks like something old and weak. The fact that the stateside versions got an S4 just like One X, the SGS3 just became worthless to me. The 2Gb of ram is not enough to make up for the flaws of the SGS3.
With the Exynos processor and true RGB display. I would be on the International SGS3 forums instead of One X.

From what I'm reading, the GS3 camera sensor is not updated (from GNEX or GS2?), and is "last generation" technology. Samsung just made some software tweaks to copycat some of the ImageSense features, such as being able to take photos will taking video.
The proof will be in a side-by-side comparison. But its looking like the One X camera will be better than the GS3, and the camera on my phone is important to me.

I read that the SGS3 uses the exact same optics (sony) that the iPhone 4S has. either way, the cameras will be very close to comparability. Either way, 95% of the pictures that are taken by the average consumer will be of their puppy/baby and blasted over facebook.

I don't use the camera all that much. Also is there a huge difference between the pentile display on the GS3 and this one? Today is the last day I have to return the phone and I'm really tempted to go for the galaxy s3.

The display on the HOX has been called the best display anyone has seen on any phone period. The Verge did a review of the SGS 3 and said that the display on the HOX is better.
IMHO the US version of the SGS 3 is the same as the AT&T HOX only with more internal RAM, an SD Card and slightly better camera.
I'm not returning my HOX.

I'm attaching a picture I put together from images I found here. It's comparing the displays of the Galaxy S, S2, and S3 phones. Unfortunately they didn't compare it to the One X, but you can at least get an idea of how much the appearance of "pentileness" is reduced (by the higher resolution) between the original S and the S3.
(The backgrounds, icons, and focus aren't identical here, but I did the best I could to put them side-by-side at a size that would not get shrunk when I upload here. You can see the full images at the link I gave.)
My impression is that hands-down, the One X has the best display you can buy, but that I can probably live with pentile at the S3's resolution, and that extra RAM is looking mighty good.

i would definitely return the HOX if I still had that choice. The SG3 has better features and does not appear to be as crippled in terms of future software development.

Interesting, but partially true. I found an article on this below. Apparently the same sensor as the iPhone, but different optics. Sensor and optics are not the same thing. Sensor is the electronic portion, optics is the glass lens.

Don't have time to look for it now, but a review I read of the GS3 described it as having a "last gen" sensor and same as previous Galaxy devices. Apparently this is not true, and the teardown definitely shows what the hardware is.

Sorry, I just don't see it. The only things the SG3 has over the HOX is removable storage (not a big deal for me) and maybe the 2GB of ram. Other than that I think the HOX is superior in every other way.
Also for those of us who actually care about design and how your phone actually looks, there simply is no comparison there, the HOX was clearly designed and the SG3 seems very average in terms of looks and the wording of their colors like "pebble" blue, won't save them there.

IMO the major difference between the screens is the resolution, though. I don't really see a lack of "pentileness". I think the thing is just that S1 and S2 looked horrible because of their low resolutions, regardless of pentile display. People see a Samsung phone with a higher resolution finally, and don't know what to do about it. Pentile is still there just as much as before.
As for the 2 GB of RAM, if you want to degrade your battery power for unnecessary RAM, go for it.
I'm not going to be dumb and say the SGS3 is a bad phone, but both phones are so close it's going to come down to personal preference for many. The way I see it, the benefits to the SGS3 are an SD card slot and removable battery, while the HOX sports a nicer display and is arguably "better looking" (obviously looks are subjective, but I've heard way more people rave about the looks of the HOX, and I've yet to hear anyone say they DON'T like the way it looks... have heard a lot of people say they don't like the look of the SGS3, and I agree that it is underwhelming at the very least, especially considering all the hype).
So, if you can live with using the cloud for storage, and don't have an issue with appx 15-16 hrs of battery life under normal usage with around 4 hrs of screen time on avg, then HOX is probably the better choice. If you need to be able to store backups of 4 ROMs on your phone and don't trust cloud networking or just don't have a good internet connection in most places, or expect to play games on your phone all day long and swap batteries without skipping a beat, or if you just plain feel that the SGS3 looks better, then SGS3 is clearly the better option for you.

I'm kind've leaning towards the SGS 3 and returning my One X (have 3 more days for the return window) based off of battery life alone. I can not get more than 2.5 hours of on screen time, and it usually averages around 2 hours max on screen time before it's dead. I've been on stock...1.83 stock...and 1.83 Clean Rom. Battery life hasn't changed between any of the roms. This is with screen brightness set to auto, but that is a requirement for me. I hear the SGS 3 really has some great battery life. If I could get 4 hours of on screen time on my One X it would be no competition but I'm only seeing HALF of that battery life...not very good.
Anyone have some recommendations? I've ran Battery stats and cpu spy and it's sleeping like normal. best performance wifi is off. The screen seems to be taking up the most power, but if I can't keep it on auto and get more than 2 hours of on screen time I'm not sure I'll be keeping the phone.

I am probably returning my HOX as well. The PHONE portion of the HOX is just poor compared to my last two phones (atrix,3gs) in regards signal, voice quality, and speakerphone. The clincher was when my wife noticed it.
That is probably the weakest thing about the phone. I also see this phone being a red headed step child with devs, due mostly to the availability issues. I'm new to HTC and i can say I don't care much for sense. It does not seem very well thought out. It just does not flow for me and comes off awkward.
I think HOX is a good device but the phone issues are inexcusable for me. Everything I've seen about touchwiz i like over Sense which just feels messy.

Battery life - User dependant. Also other factors can impact this such as signal strength, type of data used, screen brightness. Looking at the battery stats thread it seems fine, better than my HOX and that's saying something.
10GB of user space available. 4GB for system & 2GB for apps. Plenty for apps. You have 10gb available to you for music, movies, photos etc. For some this is enough for others not so much. But with the ability to sync items to cloud storage for most it shouldn't be an issue.
Heat - Can't comment, but from various reading it seems cooler than other devices.
Not got the device but comparing to let's say the SGS2 this seems to have a higher resolution screen despite having a pentile screen.
Audio - Read it has one of the cleanest outputs on a mobile device, not heard it personally but it should be fine.
CPU - The S4 is one of the best dual cores around, so much there is a shortage and pretty soon they will switch to the S3. So grab the S4 version whilst you still can. It's plenty fast and outbenches some of the quads out there.
Sense - HTC's overlay, you'll love it or hate it. I love it. Has good contact management, lovely widgets, good for social networking, and such but can be a memory hog.
Camera - HTC has done a good job on the camera front. Like my HOX I like the pictures that it takes and the burst mode is a blessing. The software is also good and easy to use.
LED - This has a notification light, albeit 2 colours only compared to some other devices but at least it has one.
To sum it up it's a good mid range device. And should serve you well. Not having the device myself I'm only giving you my thoughts from reading reviews and taking some parts of my HOX.

I'd say think about longer term, it's an older device. The One S is the newer device and I'd be thinking about Jelly Bean the next android version. One S being newer would more likely be quicker to get it than the XE. It'll have more support from HTC.
Looking at the specs of both phones:
HOS is faster,
HOS reportedly has better battery life,
HOS has better screen in regards to viewing angles and sunlight compared to the first generation SLCD, again this could be subjective,
HOS is thinner and ligther,
HOS has the better camera,
HOS has native Sense 4 support,
HOS has 1gb of RAM compared to XEs 768MB,
You'll enjoy either but if you can I'd opt for the HOS if storage space isn't that important to you.

I have both the Sensation and One S and there is really no comparison, the One S is much better. I still like my Sensation but the One S is better looking and feeling, has better battery life and a nicer screen, and is much faster.
I haven't had any of the problems that people have reported here (sensitive button, poor reception etc.). Battery life has been good for me so far, and while it does warm up when you're using it heavily it's not "hot" by any means.
The lack of SD slot is not really a problem for me, but whether you can live with it depends on your usage. I've never used more than 4GB of SD card on my Sensation, so the 10GB on board is more than enough.
The only problems I would be concerned about are:
1) Chipping on the black version. I honestly think it's overblown (like most issues with all phones, only people who have problems speak up), but if you are really worried about it get the silver one. It looks even better IMO and it won't chip as the finishing process is different.
2) Getting the 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 version instead of the 1.5GHz S4. The S3 is the previous generation chip, used in the Sensation, and is slower (despite the higher clock speed, the architecture is different) and uses more power. I don't know if there's a way to tell what you're going to get beforehand, though. Only thing I can think of is if you see "1.7GHz" anywhere on or near it, stay away.

Speaker for the HOX is fine, not as loud as say the SGS3 but it's consistent where as the SGS3 can be distorted on higher volumes. I prefer the ringtone sounds out of the HOX than SGS3.

Ok and when you use your smartphone as a cellphone (Make a call to someone), so how does the person on the other side hear you? Clean? Horrible ? Loud?

Very good! Call quality is great for me.
Loud (can adjust the volume) and clean.
You have dual mics, so any background noise is blocked out Obviously extreme noise like cars racing right beside you and loud music might not be completely blocked out and besides you won't be able to make the other person out anyway

So far, I see that people prefer HTS ONE S
That's nice, and now I really want it XDDDDD

I've just upgraded to this phone from the Desire S. I was thinking about getting the One X or the S3 too but I want a high end mobile phone not a mini tablet. This phone is amazing coming from a rooted desire S, its so fast and smooth I don't plan on rooting it.
My advise is to simply get this phone.

Are you asking me or someone else?

1) The battery life on this phone sucks. Expect to be getting no more than 4 hours of usage on average. The iphone 4/4s gets a solid 6 hours of usage. Thats 150% more battery life and I don't need to fiddle with the settings at all to achieve this.
2) The hardware has major design flaws. First of all the black one has that chipping problem with the paint. Well I have used my phone for less than 2 months and it looks butchered as hell. People complain about the iphone 4/4s, well I dropped a gazillion times and it still looked almost brand new when I sold it. I dropped the 1S one time! and the paint already came off. The front camera is recessed and gathers dust like crazy. It's impossible to clean it because its recessed and the dust has no where to go. Crap and dust also builds up near the top plastic cap. The speakers are also located exactly on the back of the phone. So if you put your phone on your table, you can't hear it ringing. Not only that the volume is so low. I missed tons of calls.
3) The community for this phone sucks. There is barely any activity on the fora and development for custom roms is stagnating. I mean sense is crap and there is only like 1 guy working on cm9? And correct me if I am wrong but the last version of AOKP is like from 3 weeks ago with tons of bugs. Now look at the Galaxy Nexus or the 1X fora. Or look at the SGS3 fora and that phone has not even been completely released yet. Its crazy. And this is worrying cause even sense has tons of bugs. There is for example this 3g/H switching that still hasn't been fixed as far as I know.
4) Then there is this low resolution pentile screen. Well its definitely ok and you shouldn't worry about it. But you WILL notice a huge difference if you put it next to the nexus, 1X or the iphone 4/4s and you will run in to all kinds of trouble with apps. For example while my own 720p videos looks good on this phone, youtube videos will look crap no matter how high you put the settings. There are tons of these annoying things. The screen is the reason why its not quite yet a flagship device while it could have been.
That being said I think its the best android phone on the market. Its the fastest android phone on the market. It doesn't have a cheap flimsy plastic body and it has a thin and light design. Aluminum feels really good on the hand especially when its cold. Its like 100 dollars/euro cheaper than the 1X and SGS3. I'd wait for the iphone 5 though. And if that turns out to be nothing or if the wait is too long then go ahead and purchase the 1S cause thats what I recommend out of the top3 android phones.

Once again, all of that is in YOUR opinion and from your usage only as well, plenty of people including me have had the exact opposite to you. Just because you experience problems doesn't mean that every one else will....
1. Is that on screen time your talking about? If so that is very good! (depending on usage and screen brightness) No other android phone gets anywhere near that unless the screens are set to like 0% and airplane mode enabled for a bit. Just look at my review and you will see the usage that I am getting from a single charge, now go and find me an android phone on stock ROM with a stock battery that can beat that (apart from the motorola razzr for obvious reasons). The iphone 4/4s also seem to have a problem with battery life for quite a few people, heck apple have even released a number of updates iirc to try and fix the battery drain
Plus don't forget that the iphone 4/4s doesn't have the same amount to do as an android phone.
2. The MAO issue is not a "hardware" problem, but a design fault.... Also I have had my phone since release day and still have no signs of chipping anywhere apart from inside the USB port plus HTC have addressed this now as they have got a design, which has a bevelled USB and less sharper edges. Well you were extremely lucky with your 4s then as due to the build of it and being mostly glass, the screen is almost always guaranteed to shatter when dropped......

It all depends on where abouts the ground impacts the mobile, you could be lucky or not so lucky with any device. If you want to be safe than sorry then a case is a necessary item for all mobiles, even the GS 2. Some devices are just more durable than others.
I have had no problems with dust getting under my screen, had my mobile since April, yes dust does gather in the front camera part, however, a quick blow and wipe with a pencil in a cloth sorts that problem out.
Emmmm what? The volume is amplified a wee bit when it is placed on the desk due to that reason, you can raise the volume as well you know or use a louder ring tone, you must be pretty deaf if you can't hear your mobile ringing......
3. The community isn't great, but it is starting to pick up now especially since the kernel source was posted, there are a few good ROMs from what I have read such as trickdroid and leedroid. Sense is crap in your opinion, many people including me love it and I for one won't be changing to a stock ICS ROM as I don't want to loose the features of sense, which IMO are better than the alternatives. The gallery, dialer, calendar, clock app are superb and not to mention the sense camera along with all the features, which you won't find on any other mobile or stock ICS ROM. Of course the galaxy nexus is going to have a damn good developing community, it's only the official/stock android phone that all the developers use to develop apps for and was the first phone to have a 720P display. The developing community here will never be as good as the the 1X or GS 3 community as they are the "flagship" devices and the phones that everyone will go for just for because of that "term"
Also the tegra chipset is apparently proving to be hard to work with for the developers with the 1X due to nvidia lack of support.
What are these bugs you speak off? I haven't had any problems with mine, super stable, super quick and smooth, multi-tasking is fine as I have disabled a lot of sense stuff and apps that I don't need and am using apex etc. instead.
If you look at my other post addressing issues you will see that I don't have the 3G/H bug, along with many other people.
The iphone is well known to have signal issues as well, not remember the 4 or 4s release where people were complaining about terrible signal, and apple said essentially "you're holding the phone the wrong way" and had to give out free bumper cases to solve the issue as it was a problem with the new antenna that they were using......
4. There is no problem with the screen, sure it ain't 720P and doesn't use RGB matrix, but it is perfectly good and better than most other mobiles screens apart from the ones you mentioned along with a couple of SE mobiles. The screen is nice and sharp still, the only areas I notice the pentile matrix is with white text on black backgrounds and some icons and even still I have to put my eyes right up to the screen. Plus the reason HTC went with with the pentile version is because the battery life is better with it than the RGB version (same reason Samsung went with pentile on the GS 3 instead of RGB). What kind of trouble have you run into with all these apps that you speak of because of the screen? What on earth are you talking about again??? Youtube videos will look crap no matter what settings you put them on??? The youtube videos look great.
Seriously, it sounds to me like you have a faulty one s if that is truly what you are experiencing.......
And after all that you still think the 1S is the best android device there is

Just buy it. It's a fine phone. These have been snapped up by many in the UK past few days due to a cheap contract deal so many more HOS users in the pipeline.
