Why would you need this if you can always get into odin mode unless your hard bricked? What could cause a half way brick lol.

Because there is always going to be people that don't bother to do any research and buy it thinking it is a quick solution for the last time they didn't do any research (and hard bricked their phone).
There is an App on the market (play store) that claims to turn your phone into a solar panel so it can charge itself through sunlight. The Dev of this app clearly sates that it is a joke and just put there for idiots that don't know better. It doesn't take very long reading the App reviews to see that there are plenty of idiots around. Most get it, however, there are several that actually think that it is supposed to charge their phones even after the Dev's confession.
So yea, that is why.

If im not mistaken samsung disabled the jig fix in 2.3.6
cause it would not work on my galaxy note

I think the only thing they fixed was the issue of resetting the flash counter which was only good to 2.3.4. But now that we have a flash able zip to use with the 4.0 roms. The jig should still get you into download mode with a soft brick.

This will help you recover from a true birck
true brick = phone will not power up, no leds lighting up. Your phone trully dose nothing
Ive used this method 3 times so far and have been able to recover. I can not GUARANTEE this will work 100% of the time. My guess is it depends on the cause of the brick. (for me it was some alpha builds of the twilight kernel. sorry tanimn)
1) make sure your phone is powered off (if your bricked you dont need to worry about this)
2) remove the battery dore
3) look beneith the silver camera bezel on the left hand side. youll see a tinyu hole that dosnt look like much
4) insert a ball point pen or bent paper clip inside of the hole and apply some pressure (not to much)
5)hold for 10-15 seconds ( longer if you like )
6) boot the phone directly to dl mode
7) odin ec05 or any stock rom you desire. ( make sure its the full tar ).
Great to hear that there may be a way to fix things if something goes wrong! Even if it saves only one other person's phone!

This is exactly why I never posted this before. This is the same issues with the i9000. Less then 50% if the people actually have this "magic button". I'm still trying to dig up that thread for reference.
I my self feel the button when pressed. I have recovered from 3 bricks using this "magic button" nubecoder had stated he has seen this button when his phone was disassembled
The reason this thread no exists now is cause I was asked to start a thread after I posted something in the vision kernel thread.

thats cray! You would think Samsung would follow HTC but I dont think Samsung really cares about software. They only care about hardware (which I love). HTC on the other hand cares about software and the user experience than their hardware (HTC got some ugly phones). My next phone will prob be HTC since Samsung really doesn't care about our experience with this phone(and TBH I loved sense).

It's used to flash custom operating systems (roms), kernels, etc. You should take it back to store if you just got it a couple days ago and get a replacement.
Bring your cable with you so they can test at the store if it's the cable causing it to go into download mode or if the phone itself is the problem. At any rate, you paid too much money to have a buggy phone and if this is happening there are likely other problems with your device. Replace it.
Thanks everyone for the input. it wound up being a detective cable causing the issue i was having.

I know this is old, buy WHAT! Defective cable. Damn there are some people who would have bought that lol
What I mean is that cord.....defective or not for charging...it is pretty much a jig. It is what people use to recover their phones when they have bricked them (funnily enough "bricked" is no longer bricked anymore....hmm I wonder how many people threw out phones thinking they could never work again?)

I'm thinking it was a cable for factory use in development at Samsung and got packaged up by mistake.
EDIT: Also wanted to add, "bricked" is still "bricked". It's just that people "soft-brick" and think it's a brick, when usually it's just a boot loop. Hard bricks do happen, unfortunately...

Well, it makes no sense, if the chip is fried, then why does it give the error code? The phone can't turn on or do anything when the chip is fried. As there is nothing to make the phone boot or even process, there is no power supply.

Well, I know this has been discussed before, but I didn't find a solution for it. I recently acquired a GSII Skyrocket from a friend. He said it suddenly stopped working- he's pretty wealthy so he just bought an iPhone and gave this thing to me. I'm a Droid Charge user so I'm not new to Samsung devices, but this kind of stumps me.
Anyway when I try to power it on all I get is a pulse vibrate. You can see what happens here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYFc7IMU0pg&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Any suggestions? Do I have to send it in to get it JTAG'd? I'd really like to get this fixed so I can sell it.
Thanks

Looks to have signs of life, somewhat, so I wouldn't think it's bricked. I would say maybe a stuck power button. Try cleaning it out.
Otherwise, try using Odin to return to stock.. you can find a sticky by vincom here with all the info you'll need.
There may be options between my 2 ideas someone else may give, i'm sure someone can get you pointed in the right direction if nothing I said does. Good luck.
Edit: Oh, also, the jig won't help.

the speed of the reboot seems more like a stuck power button like btm fdr said but odin to stock would be a good idea just don't mess up with odin because that can brick .
EDIT: from with in odin I can't remember if it's volume up or down but you can tell it to reboot normally. that would tell you if you need to odin it back to stock.

Thanks
Kvswim

its a stuck "sticky" power button, if it is then odin wont work since it wont stay on long enough and useless since its a hw problem
test: when you remove then reinsert bat and the phone turns on, then if it takes approx 10 sec's to turn off and vibrate then its for sure a power button problem, its stuck
The device does exactly as seen in the video. I'd say it's shorter than 10 seconds, I can't get it to stay in download mode. The power button still "clicks" if that counts for anything.

Click does not mean anything as its the internal button that's giving u problems, mashing it or cleaning usually works but not guaranteed, might need replacing the button

I just ordered a new precision toolkit so I'll wait for it to arrive, then I'll try to take it apart and clean out the button.

You sir, should be what every user in the forum strives to be. A video to show us what's going on, info on the history of the device, and a willingness to fix it yourself.
I agree with everyone saying stuck power button. It's been a rampant problem for this device. Do you have any compressed air? If so, spray that stuff all around that power button. If not, examine the hardware around it and see if you can see any noticeable particles or lint which could be obstructing or jamming the button. If not, out it back together and mash the hell out of the button itself to see if you can un-jam it. If it still doesn't work, try sending it to Samsung for repair. Probably won't cost you as much as you'll sell the device for once it's fixed. Most seem to be getting around $200 for their rockets around here, depending on your region.
Good luck!
I got it! I ended up dousing the hell out of the board in 100% Isopropyl and smashing the sh!t out of the power button. Thanks a lot you guys!

Don't smash the button next time, use a dental pick.

You know, I always thought one of those would always be handy, but I never know where to pick one up. One that won't break in 10 seconds, at least.
